Drawing on global data and real-world observations, the author investigates the cultural, societal, and political factors that perpetuate gender-based violence and discrimination.

The writing of this book was inspired by stark realities: about one in three women world-wide has suffered violence, usually from a husband or partner during her lifetime; 200 million have been subjected to female genital mutilation in 30 countries in Africa, the Middle East and Asia; 130 million are 'demographically missing' across the low- and middle-income countries (LMIC) due to gender bias; nearly half the women in 57 LMIC are denied autonomy over reproductive health decisions and the right to seek health care, and 12 million live births worldwide are among girls aged 1519 years. Drawn from data from the World Health Organisation, these sobering figures lay the foundation for a broader examination of deeply ingrained societal norms and systemic failures.

While acknowledging that gender-based violence is a global issue including in wealthier nations the book pays particular attention to how public attitudes in many LMIC often tolerate, excuse, or even endorse harmful practices. Yet, amid the grim statistics and persistent injustices, the book also charts the slow but steady progress being made though through education, advocacy, and policy reforms aimed at empowering women and securing their rightful place in society.

Contents: DedicationPrefaceAcknowledgementsAbout the AuthorImportant Abbreviations ListIntroductionDaily Life: 1Daily Life: 2MarriageWidowhoodImproving Women's Lives: Examples from the Past and PresentList of Charities that Help Women and Children around the WorldIndex

Readership: Undergraduate students reading gender studies, social anthropology, and human rights issues; People in high- and-middle income counties interested in the customs and practices of other countries, and in the live of women in these countries.

", "author": "Ruth F Itzhaki", "slug": "honour-and-shame-3291608-9789819819386-ruth-f-itzhaki", "thumbnail_image": "//redshelf-images.s3-external-1.amazonaws.com/cover_image/9789819819386.jpg", "default_thumbnail_image": "//redshelf-images.s3-external-1.amazonaws.com/thumbnail/default_book_thumbnail.jpg", "product_type": "book", "product_id": "3291608", "product_url": "/app/ecom/book/3291608/honour-and-shame-3291608-9789819819386-ruth-f-itzhaki", "bisac_codes": [ "SOC032000" ], "items_count": null, "identifiers": { "EISBN13": "9789819819386", "EISBN10": "9819819385" }, "drm": null, "cover_image": null, "default_cover_image": null, "book_type": null }, "relationships": { "lowest_offering": { "data": { "type": "offerings", "id": "00010037476470" } } } }, { "type": "Product", "id": "00010003291607", "attributes": { "name": "The Many Worlds of Linus Pauling", "subtitle": "", "description": "
From the author of the award-winning Visions of Linus Pauling comes this riveting sequel that chronicles four pivotal but under-studied aspects of Pauling's epic life:

Drawing on years of archival investigation, hours of interviews and hundreds of source materials, Chris Petersen offers readers an extraordinarily unvarnished view of Linus Pauling as never before a young man, a bold division chair, and an intrepid explorer whose unorthodox ideas and fiery activism drew stormy interactions with friends and enemies alike.

Contents:About the EditorPrefaceBiographical Sketch of Linus PaulingPauling in Oregon:Herman Pauling: Striving for a Better LifeBelle Pauling: Hard TimesPauline and Lucile PaulingPauling's AdolescencePauling's Freshman Year at Oregon Agricultural College, 19171918Pauling's Sophomore Year at Oregon Agricultural College, 19181919The Boy Professor, 19191920Pauling's Junior Year at Oregon Agricultural College, 19201921Ava Helen in OregonPauling's Senior Year at Oregon Agricultural College, 19211922An Honorary Doctorate from Oregon State Agricultural CollegeThe Story of Ralph SpitzerThe Black Student Union WalkoutA Sentimental TripCaltech Administrator:IntroductionBecoming Division ChairFirst Years in ChargeLeading the Division During World War IIChairing the Division After the WarA Cold War Division ChairFinal Years as Division ChairPeriod of Wandering:The Center for the Study of Democratic InstitutionsThe University of California, San DiegoStanford UniversityTravels:The Guggenheim TripThe Paulings Go to EnglandVisiting Albert SchweitzerPauling and the Soviet UnionTravels in Latin AmericaJapan and the JapaneseTwo Trips to ChinaSourcingIndex

Readership: The general public interested in the lives of great scientists and Nobel Laureates. As society becomes increasingly reliant on mathematical models, algorithms, and data, the ethical implications of how mathematics is used and misused are gaining urgency. Yet most scientists and mathematicians receive little formal training in ethical reflection.

Responding to this gap, this collection presents a series of thoughtful and accessible essays written by students taking a mandatory course on the theory of science and ethics. The contributions span topics such as scientific responsibility, the ethics of mathematical modeling, decolonization of research, automation, and the moral obligations of mathematicians. Framed by an expert introduction and concluding analysis, the essays provide a rare and engaging entry point into a field where literature for students is still scarce.

Contents: About the EditorsIntroduction (Gunilla Oberg)How It All Began (Ragnar Fjelland)Ethical Issues in Science and Academia:Should Scientists Rule the World? Through rigorous scientific analysis, this book advances a groundbreaking new theory: that these vast non-coding regions comprising 98% of our genome function as a sophisticated adaptive reservoir with latent potential that activates in response to environmental challenges.

Dr Prabakaran develops a compelling information-theoretic framework to understand how this 'dark genome' operates as nature's supreme adaptive system. Beginning with a speculative scenario of space-adapted humans called Homo minimus, he traces the cosmic origins of life's elements, explores DNA's remarkable information architecture, and examines evolutionary transitions where non-coding regions played crucial roles in developing biological complexity. While incorporating speculative elements to engage readers, this text maintains academic rigor throughout, making it suitable as a textbook on the dark genome. Each chapter builds on empirical research while proposing testable hypotheses about stress-responsive elements of genomic function, regulatory networks, and the dark proteome that activate during environmental crises.

The culminating chapters explore potential implications for humanity's cosmic future, suggesting that the dark genome may harbor adaptations relevant to space environments. This hybrid approach balancing academic precision with accessible narrative and thoughtful speculation makes the book valuable for both specialized academic audiences and interested general readers seeking a deeper understanding of genomic complexity beyond conventional paradigms.

Contents: Confronting Extinction: Dawn of a Fresh StartOrigins Unveiled: Tracing Life's GenesisNature's Supreme Archive: Decoding DNA and Nucleic AcidsEvolutionary Progression from Single Cells to Complex OrganismsLife's Epic Journey: Exploring the Dark Genome Dark Proteome: Emergence of Proteins from the Junk DNA EnigmaUnraveling Nature's Magnificent Tapestry: Biodiversity ExploredLessons from Earth's History: Extinction and AdaptationBeyond Earth: The Dark Genome and Cosmic HorizonsResilience and Continuity: Life's Cosmic Future

Readership: Advanced undergraduate students, graduate students, and researchers across multiple biological and medical disciplines. Extending the asymptotic calculus shaped by du Bois-Reymond, Landau, and Hardy rooted in notations such as O, o, and it provides a formal algebraic language for comparing growth rates, interpreting numerical evidence, and connecting longstanding problems, including the Riemann hypothesis. The new degree formalism incorporates Hardy's logarithmico-exponential functions, built from id, exp, and log using the operations of addition, multiplication, division, and composition, as benchmarks for comparison. The monograph develops foundational results about the structure and algebra of the degree formalism, including its relation to Karamata theory, Hardy fields, transseries, and asymptotic differential algebra. While not offering proofs of major conjectures, it proposes a new way of establishing interdependencies among error terms. Applications to summatory functions, prime gaps, the Riemann zeta function, and Diophantine approximation demonstrate the framework's reach and utility. These applications reduce error terms in analytic number theory to core set of primitives, including the function (x) li(x), whose degree equals 12 if and only if the Riemann hypothesis holds.

Contents: A Survey of Analytic Number Theory:A Brief History of PrimesAsymptotic AnalysisArithmetic FunctionsSpecial Functions in Analytic Number TheoryThe Analytic Theory of PrimesAlgebraic Asymptotic Analysis:Logexponential DegreeAsymptotic AlgebraAsymptotic Continued Fraction ExpansionsApplications of Algebraic Asymptotic Analysis to Number Theory:The Prime Counting Function (x) and Related FunctionsSummatory FunctionsThe Riemann Zeta Function (s)Primes in Intervals, the nth Prime, and the nth Prime GapDiophantine Approximation and Continued FractionsConjectures

Readership: Mathematicians or graduate students in mathematics, especially those specializing in analytic number theory or asymtptotic algebra. Chapters one and two are concerned with technical matters when studying strategic trade policy rather than the analysis of strategic trade policy itself. The chapters particularly introduce an innovative method of illustrating the Cournot-oligopoly equilibrium and the Cournot-oligopsony equilibrium on the price-quantity plane. Chapter three surveys the pioneering work by James A Brander and Barbara J Spencer and examines several points that are often overlooked or misunderstood when discussing theoretical models of strategic trade policy. Chapters four through six deal with market integration through trade liberalization in the context of strategic trade policy. It is shown that trade liberalization may generate unexpected effects. Chapters seven through nine investigate trade costs and trade policies in the presence of firm heterogeneity. Implications obtained in these chapters are different from those in the Melitz model. Chapters 10 and 11 are concerned with information about strategic trade policies. In particular, these chapters study what information is needed when employing strategic trade policies. Chapters 12 through 15 explore strategic trade policies with intermediate inputs. As global value chains develop, it is becoming increasingly important to analyze trade policies in vertical market structures.

Contents: Diagrammatic Demonstration of the Cournot Equilibrium (Jota Ishikawa)Diagrammatic Demonstration of Oligopsonies: An Alternative Method (Jota Ishikawa)The Brander-Spencer Model (Jota Ishikawa)Foreign Monopoly and Trade Policy under Segmented and Integrated Markets (Jota Ishikawa)From Segmented Markets to Integrated Markets: An Analysis of Economic Integration and Antidumping Legislation (Jota Ishikawa)Economic Integration and Rules of Origin under International Oligopoly (Jota Ishikawa, Hiroshi Mukunoki, and Yoshihiro Mizoguchi)Subsidies and Countervailing Duties with Firm Heterogeneity (Jota Ishikawa and Yoshimasa Komoriya)Trade Costs, Wage Rates, Technologies, and Reverse Imports (Jota Ishikawa and Yoshimasa Komoriya)Stay or Leave? Atomic and molecular physics is relevant to everything around us, because everything in our immediate environment is made up of atoms and molecules. That said, there are a multitude of fascinating things in the world that cannot be thought of as merely a collection of atoms and molecules. How is it that, when matter grows from a single atom or molecule into a larger and larger system, a new reality emerges with all its specific features and properties? To what extent are the properties of larger systems determined by the properties of individual atoms and molecules, rather than by the properties of the whole system as it grows? At what scales do new properties appear in the system, and how do they influence other properties in the system? This book does not provide definitive answers to these questions, but rather points the way to their resolution by presenting concrete, solvable case studies from various fields that can provide some elucidation.

With contributions from leading scientists, the book covers a wide range of topics from multiscale computational modelling, nanoscience, and plasmonic chemistry to radiation damage in biomolecular systems and the foundations of astrochemistry. Many of the research areas addressed are closely related to cutting-edge technological and medical applications, such as radiotherapy and 3D nanoprinting.
