"description": "Short-term psychotherapy has become more and more popular in recent years and there is an increasing need for therapists to be able to offer help without entering into many years of therapy. This practical volume is an introductory text and a quick reference guide to short-term therapy, by an experienced therapist and teacher of psychodynamic short-term therapy. It is based on lectures given on the topic to experienced therapists wanting to familiarise themselves with short-term therapy. In a clear and concise manner, the author explores the basics of this approach and moves on to discuss such topics as the importance of the first session; the timescale of the therapy, the different techniques; and ending of analysis.Full of useful tables and bullet points, this volume is an indispensable guide to short-term psychodynamic therapy for experienced therapists as well as laypeople who are interested in learning more about this method of therapy.'I have not been compelled through pressure of numbers or financial limits to adopt [short-term psychodynamic therapy]. Rather, I have seen the good effects that can be achieved in a relatively short space of time. I want to see clients helped out of their pain and towards a more free existence in the shortest possible time.'- From the Introduction",

"description": "This enriching book describes the value of learning about the development of the human personality through the experience of observing a baby in the context of the family. It is distinctive in the field of infant observation literature, for it shows how the affective learning augments the learning experience. It also highlights a somewhat neglected area of observational study; the relationshio between siblings and its influence on the development of the self-esteem of the younger child. The book comprises three sections: observing babies in their families; application of infant observation studies to work with intensive care units for premature babies and to psychotherapy with adult patients; and the teaching of infant observation using the affective learning model approach. The book is written in a style suitable for both parents and a wide variety of professionals, including paediatricians, nurses, social workers, psychologists, psychiatrists, and teachers. It is a crucial book for those parents and clinicians who wish to think more about the baby's preverbal emotional life.",

It is not intended to replace the reading of Bion's original texts nor is it a biography of W.R. Bion, the man. A brief history of Bion's life is offered in the introduction to illuminate the conscious and unconscious factors that may have been an influence on his work, but the aim of this volume is to serve as an insightful and comprehensive guide to the often obscure meanings and terms explored and created by Bion throughout his many years, first as a psychiatrist and later as a psychoanalyst. It is an essential companion to the works of Bion that brings clarity and understanding to his absorbing concepts and is a vital addition to the library of anyone who has read and wondered over the writings of W.R. Bion.'[This dictionary is] to be used as a \"reference book\", as an indispensable partner and a guide in the adventure of the fascinating discovery, although highly dense, complex and frequently frustrating, of Wilfred Ruprecht Bion's great legacy to psychoanalysis.'- Rafael Lopez-Corvo, from the Introduction.",

"description": "Which 'forms of feeling' are facilitated and which discouraged within the cultures and structures of modern state welfare? This book illuminates the social and psychic dynamics of these new public cultures of welfare, locating them in relation to our understanding of borderline states of mind in individuals, organizations and society. Drawing upon their idea of a psychoanalytic sensibility rooted in Wilfred Bion's notion of 'learning from experience', the authors aim to access the new structures of feeling now taking shape in marketized and commodified health and social care systems. Integrating their reflections on clinical work with patients, consultancy with public sector organizations, political analysis, and the tradition of Group Relations Training, they offer a wide-ranging perspective on how contemporary social anxieties are managed within modern public welfare. Our collective struggle with fears of dependency and loss, and the demands of living and working in an interdependent 'networked' world give rise to fresh challenges to our ability to maintain depth of emotional engagements in welfare settings.Part of the Tavistock Clinic Series",

Sexuality is not a prominent theme within the work of Winnicott, who preferred to concentrate on the development of the self from infancy. However, his writings contain unexplored insights into sexuality and it is these hidden insights that prompted Lesley Caldwell to invite papers from leading analysts to expand upon them. This collection provides a fresh and innovative look at the work of Winnicott and into sexuality, in particular infantile sexuality. The unusual link of Winnicott to Freud and to a psychoanalysis located in the drives encourages a different perspective into British psychoanalysis. Other diverse themes include a historical examination of Winnicott through the British Society; an exploration of the similarities between Laplanche and Winnicott; the use of Winnicott's work in the treatment of sexual dysfunction; and the interrelation between sexuality and play. This is the sixth volume in the Winnicott Studies Monograph Series.",

Topics explored include the importance of observation; dreams; art and psychoanalysis; and the significance of time in psychoanalysis. In addition, this volume includes an illuminating interview of Bion by Anthony G. Banet in 1976.'In your practice you will find yourself under pressure. You say whatever you have to say, and then there is an entirely new situation. You don't really know what is going on because it is an entirely new situation, things will not be the same. It is likely enough that the patient will say, \"Why don't you say something?\" Or if not the patient, the relatives - \"Why don't you do something?\" So you are always under pressure prematurely and precociously to produce your idea. Poor little thing! Pull it up by the roots and have a look at it - it hasn't got a chance. So you have to act as a sort of parent to the idea - protect it and give it a chance to grow in spite of these pressures; you have to be able to tolerate this state of ignorance.'- W.R. Bion",

A neglected subject in more recent psychoanalytic work, this book was inspired by the COWAP European Conference of 2003. On Incest explores the theories and reasons behind incest, using themes such as gender identity and perversion. This fourth volume in the Psychoanalysis & Women Series for the Committee on Women and Psychoanalysis of the International Psychoanalytical Association contains papers from leading experts in the field. It includes the papers delivered at the conference, and two additional papers from Mariam Alizade and Brendan MacCarthy, who present their accounts of the discussions as they developed during the conference. The collection deals with a number of issues that surround incest, including Freud's work and how his outlook changed throughout the years; the post-Freudian theories; treatment of both offender and victim through traditional one-on-one and group therapy; the importance of the sex of the analyst; the permutations of the abuser/abused; and the \"why\" of incest. As well as addressing theory, the papers include moving and, at times, disturbing clinical vignettes to provide an insight into clinical practice. This is a book for trainee and professional psychoanalysts, social workers, counsellors, community police officers, and any other professionals whose work brings them into contact with this distressing subject.Contributors:Mariam Alizade; Giovanna Ambrosio; Simona Argentieri Bondi; Monique Cournut; Brendan MacCarthy; Juan Eduardo Tesone; and Estela Welldon.",

"description": "This book offers a psychoanalytic perspective on learning and teaching and on many of the issues which preoccupy those who work in educational institutions. It looks at the origins of learning in childrens early relationships and at factors which help and hinder the educational process in later childhood and adolescence. Amongst the topics addressed in the book are the significance of play and playfulness, the impact of change, separation, times of transition, bereavement, bullying and racism. The author has aimed to set well-established psychoanalytic ideas about learning within the context of current educational practice and to look at the teachers experience alongside that of the students. This volume is a collection of papers, each of which is a version of a lecture previously given as part of the Tavistock course, \"Emotional Factors in Learning and Teaching; counselling aspects in education\". The course, which is for teachers and others working in educational settings, has been running for more than thirty years. It began as a collaboration between Martha Harris, then Head of the Child Psychotherapy training at the Tavistock Clinic and her husband, Roland Harris, an educationalist and writer. This partnership between clinical thinking and expertise in educational theory and practice continues to the present day, with child psychotherapists and educationists working closely together. The ideas underpinning the course were first elaborated by Isca Saltzberger Wittenberg, Gianna Henry and Elsie Osborne in 1983 in The Emotional Experience of Learning and Teaching, a book which remains a valued, core text. This new volume represents an attempt to revisit some of the same themes and to set the applied psychoanalytic thinking in the current educational context.",
