                "name": "Clinical Studies in Neuro-psychoanalysis",
                "subtitle": "Introduction to a Depth Neuropsychology",
                "description": "When the first edition of Clinical studies in Neuro-Psychoanalysis was published in 2000, it was hailed as a turning point in psychoanalytic research. It is now relied on as a model for the integration of neuroscience and psychoanalysis. It won the NAAP's Gradiva Award for Best Book of the Year 2000 (Science Category) and Mark Solms received the International Psychiatrist Award 2001 at the American Psychiatric Association's annual meeting. The authors have added a glossary of key terms of this edition to aid their introduction to depth neuropsychology. 'Freud, in his 1895 Project for a Scientific Psychology, attempted to join the emerging discipline of psychoanalysis with the neuroscience of his time. But that was a hundred years ago, when the neuron had only just been described, and Freud was forced - through lack of pertinent knowledge - to abandon his project. We have had to wait many decades before the sort of data which Freud needed finally became available. Now, these many years later, contemporary neuroscience allows for the resumption of the search for correlations between these two disciplines. The Drs Solms are uniquely qualified for his task, having trained in both psychoanalysis and the neurosciences, and the work described in this volume ushers in a new era for our field.'- Arnold Z. Pfeffer, from his Foreword",

                "description": "Therapeutic practice needs constant examination to ensure that it remains responsive and dynamic. Living organisms must communicate with their environment if they are to survive, and institutions are no different. This monograph, the second of the Cassell Hospital series, explores this concept further. By reading it, ideas and thinking will be sparked off that will help other organisations promote their own culture of enquiry.- Kevin Healy, Director of the Cassel Hospital, from his ForewordThe contemporary Cassel Hospital was developed by Tom Main to create a self-exploratory institution. Main argued that, in order for the hospital to be therapeutic, it needs a \"culture of enquiry\". The individual and the institution might be seduced into ritualised working practices that no longer serve the needs of patients or staff. It is these \"lapses from the continual enquiry\" that are considered by this collection. It describes the mostly unconscious manoeuvres that inhibit reflection, and how the inappropriate use of psychoanalytic ideas can close off enquiry within a therapeutic community.Contributors:David Bell; Peter Grffiths; R.D. Hinshelwood; Tom Main; Agata Pisula; Pam Pringle; and Wilhelm Skogstad.",

Approaching the IJP's intellectual resources from a variety of perspectives, the monographs highlight important domains of psychoanalytic enquiry. Key Papers on Borderline Disorders, the third volume in the series, grew out of technical innovation. Psychoanalytic papers to appear in the journal were posted on the IJP website and the psychoanalytic community responded on emerging psychoanalytic ideas almost before they have been fully formulated. They were discussed by an international audience of remarkable intellectual force and insight, and this book is based on the responses.",

                "description": "'A state of mourning is something that the late Twentieth Century has been uniquely unable to achieve. A culture based on the interchangeability of products and people, and a throw-away culture, is not conducive to mourning...Inanimate objects have replaced human ideals. A culture of 'virtual reality' which finds it difficult to distinguish between the living and the inanimate has been created - a culture of the undead. This culture is not grounded on human relationships but in the destruction of them.'In this book, Christina Wieland offers the reader a far-reaching and devastating critique of masculinity, femininity and contemporary culture. Drawing inspiration from the work of Melanie Klein, the author demonstrates how the Western psyche is based upon denial of the power of the mother, and the elevation of the father into the repressive, authoritarian figure. This act of universal matricide has wrought havoc throughout Western culture. As Weiland graphically illustrates, both women and men are denied the opportunity to mourn their separation from their mother, but must contend instead with the guilt that surrounds her murder, and the ever-present terror of her vengeful return - as 'the undead mother'. Re-appraising masculinity and femininity, the author re-visits a wide and fascinating range of myths, fairytales and stories. Her critique casts new light on the writings of Freud, Kelin, Kristeva and Irigaray. Her vivid presentations of clinical material also show how the undead mother makes her presence felt in the consulting room, and the steps which can be taken towards more genuine, reparative mourning.",

Waska formulates a distinctive and subtle argument concentrated on the topic of primitive loss. It is Waska's conviction that the experience of loss has a primacy within the paranoid-schizoid position but that this has received insufficient and inadequate recognition, with significant implications for analytic technique.With this standpoint as his orienting focus, Waska provides a finely-textured and penetrating discussion of such issues as projective identification, symbolization, transference and counter transference. A thoughtful and perceptive examination of theoretical issues is buttressed with substantial illustrative case material throughout.Calling for further work to be done in refining and clarifying the understanding of loss, and its intrapsychic, interpersonal and technical ramifications, the present volume represents a significant contribution and stimulus to that task",

                "description": "Inside Lives belongs to the heart of the thinking and working of the Tavistock Clinic. Its aim is to bring psychoanalytic theory to life, to make it accessible to a much wider range of readers, both lay and professional, than would normally be familiar with this kind of approach. In the simplest of terms it tells the most complex of stories: the story of the internal development of a person from infancy to old age. In so doing, it reflects and encompasses the generational structure of the clinic as a whole, tracing the interacting influences - between infant, child, adolescent and adult - on the nature and quality of emotional growth and development.This book provides a perspective on the relationship between psychoanalytic theory and the nature of human development, which is not currently available in written form. Following the major developmental phases from infancy to old age, the author lucidly explores those vital aspects of experience, which promote mental and emotional growth and those which impede it. In bringing together a wide range of clinical, non-clinical and literary examples it offers a detailed and accessible introduction to contemporary psychoanalytic thought and provides a personal and vivid approach to the elusive question of how the personality develops.",
