                "name": "Forgiveness in Intimate Relationships",
                "subtitle": "A Psychoanalytic Perspective",
                "description": "How does one overcome the hardship of letting go of resentment in order to resume or establish a substantial bond with the traumatizing person, usually a parent, mindful of the fact that the experience of the self is rooted in those very same intimate relationships? The centerpiece of this book is forgiveness in intimate relationships and recovery from trauma as viewed psychodynamically in the clinical situation. Traumas inflicted by intimates, especially by parents, differ from traumas in the form of transgressions and betrayals in the context of less rooted relationships. While some betrayals are in fact not forgivable, what is at issue with betraying parents is that inevitably the traumatized person yearns for reunion but the fear of re-traumatization and humiliation often make that possibility fraught with risk. The author focuses on the analytic situation as the rightful arena for true forgiveness, one in which the analytic cure through an ongoing process of translating experience into words and creating narrative and meaning allows for the unfolding of a wish (as opposed to the will) often in the transference to re-establish a meaningful bond with the offender (parent) that is not superficial. This is a significant point in forgiving of traumatizing parents in that for individuals to be able to freely and fully engage their world presently, they have to transcend the past without erasing it. This is what is meant simply by forgiveness, a formidable challenge for psychoanalytic work.",

                "name": "The Couch in the Marketplace",
                "subtitle": "Psychoanalysis and Social Reality",
                "description": "The book aims at bridging the conceptual and practical gap between a psychoanalytic focus on the internal world and the dynamics of external reality by examining an array of junctures in which the two perspectives combine to enrich each other. Starting from the inherent bias of the psychoanalytic immersion in working with the internal world, the book deals with a wide array of phenomena in which a binocular perspective is potentially contributing. One such bridge is exemplified by the Group Relations approach, which richly combines psychoanalytic insights with systemic ones. This unique merger is valuable in studying a variety of phenomena both within psychoanalysis and outside it. The work of the analyst in the psychoanalytic setting implies situating oneself on several boundaries - internal and external, love and admiration as well as death and destructive impulses - and the courage and sacrifice demanded by taking up this role. This binocular perspective has significant implications for the formation and maintenance of identity and particularly for the psychoanalytic identity. A study of Moses and Monotheism provides a deeper look into Freud's anguish about his leadership and its aftermath for the survival of his legacy, and along the way - to an understanding of the roots of Jewish identity and the anti-Semitism it arouses, which stem from the explosive act Freud attributes to both Moses and himself. The focus of the book then shifts to other pertinent areas, such as the psychoanalytic contribution to the discontent of the contemporary subject; the inherent difficulty in the relationship of psychoanalysis with the university; the place of the enemy - intrapsychic and real - and the problems inherent in discourse with him; and the impact of external trauma, such as terror attacks, on the psychoanalytic space and setting. Finally, a number of organizational implications and practices are presented and discussed: the place and meaning of the subject in understanding the organization; the special role of corruption in paranoiagenesis and regression in groups and organizations; a consultative intervention in a severely traumatized mental health center; and finally, some current perspectives on organizational and consultative intervention in psychoanalytic societies.The importance of this book is its uncompromising adherence to both sides of the divide: a psychoanalytic depth of fathoming the inner world of drives and experience, coupled with a systemic view of the external social conditions in which the psychoanalytic enterprise unfolds and the lives of individuals, institutions and organizations transpires.",

                "description": "This volume aims to question the recent revival of neo-nationalist policies in the light of what unconscious fantasies are involved in these developments. It examines both recent movements of right-wing extremism and the way in which rearticulated neo-ethnic ideas have been adopted by mainstream politicians and in mainstream public discourse. Politicians from other than the right-wing populist parties have tended to resist specific ways of talking that are considered too extremist, rather than their underlying frame of interpretation.Governments across Europe have adopted anti-immigrant and anti-Roma policies. Xenophobia and hostility towards 'others' is on the rise, along with appeals to \"Tradition and Security\". 'Cultures of fear' are linked with fantasies of fusion or 'imagined sameness'. Alongside the image of the nation as a mother and/or father, Reich (1933) called attention to the fantasy of the nation as a body, echoed in Money-Kyrle's (1939) characterization of 'group hypochondria' in connection with the burning of witches and heretics; \"The Church, and State united to it, could tolerate no foreign body within itself, and turned ferociously upon any that it found.\" To address the current political developments, the volume stresses the urgency of understanding the fantasies and affects which underpin them.",

From the author's point of view, these two disciplines are really the two sides of the same coin, since both explore and use therapeutically what happens in the interphase between individual and collective ways of existence. It is divided into three parts. The first deals with the construction of a theory that articulates individual, relational, and collective mental processes; the second, with the problems of interpretation from the hermeneutic, psychoanalytic, and group-analytic points of view; the third, with the clinic and applications of relational analysis and group analysis.",

                "subtitle": "What Happens When The Human Equation Gets Lost",
                "description": "Within the last few decades a dizzying array of scientific disciplines and \"explanations\" of the motivating forces behind the profound enigmas of human behaviour have emerged: sociobiology, cognitive psychology, game theory, experimental psychology, neurobiology, evolutionary psychology, \"existential\" neurology, social psychology, genetics, and other attempts at interdisciplinary thinking. Each, according to its own reductive approach, strives to separate, isolate, examine in laboratories and through experiments extracted from real-life experience, and thereby \"understand\" the most complex aspects of being human - including our subjectivity; morality and altruism; our economic survival and our irrational biases that affect it; our innate need for religion and wonder; and the cross-cultural stalwart, humour.But as Gerald Alper argues in his exciting and challenging new work, this sort of contemporary balkanization of the human mind actually achieves the opposite of its purpose. Rather than unraveling and illuminating the Ur source of a particular behaviour or mindset, it merely shrinks the richly threaded tapestry to a single frayed thread dissevered and abstractly disconnected from the everyday experiential realities of human existence.Examining the assertions and fallacies of the theories conceived (or contrived) by some of today's most brilliant scientists and thinkers (including Dan Ariely, John Barrow, Pascal Boyer, Frank Close, Nicholas Humphrey, Richard Dawkins, Stanley Milgram, Oliver Sacks, and Carl Sagan), Alper explores why these varied attempts at joining the world of experience and the world of measurement so regularly fail, how consciousness explained is really a concentrated effort to explain away the subjective phenomena of consciousness.From the psychic rat to the gorilla in the room, from British double-agent Kim Philby to comedian Steve Martin, The Incredible Shrinking Mind not only offers a provocative and entertaining critique, but also a profound and practical solution: the psychodynamic approach, which takes seriously the question of meaning and not solely observable behaviour, which combines the quantitative and the experimental with the human and multidimensional, which seeks to understand not just how but why. No single equation, no theory, no dazzling fMRI image of the hidden brain can ever accomplish this for us. It must be patiently done, one person at a time.",

                "description": "This book brings together narrative approaches and brain injury rehabilitation, in a manner that fosters an understanding of the natural fit between the two. We live our lives by narratives and stories, and brain injury can affect those narratives at many levels, with far-reaching effects. Understanding held narratives is as important as understanding the functional profile of the injury. This book explores ways to create a space for personal stories to emerge and change, whilst balancing theory with practical application. Despite the emphasis of this book on the compatibility of narrative approaches to supporting people following brain injury, it also illustrates the potential for contributing to significant change in the current narratives of brain injury.This book takes a philosophically different approach to many current neuro-rehabilitation topics, and has the potential to make a big impact. It also challenges the reader to question their own position, but does so in an engaging manner which makes it difficult to put down.There is a thread to the internal narrative of the book as a whole. It begins with an exploration of narratives within brain injury broadly, then moves to considering professional interactions with those narratives. Once the context has been set, the authors move to look at focusing clinical work through goal-setting, and thinking about the issues clinicians or therapists might meet, such as trauma, communication difficulties, working with carers, families, and other forms of indirect work. It concludes with a chapter looking at the journey of our work through the process of gathering outcome evidence.",

                "description": "Socioanalysis is the study of groups, organisations, and society using a systems psychoanalytic framework: looking beneath the surface (and the obvious) to see the underlying dynamics and how these dynamics are interconnected. This book examines several of the methodologies used in socioanalytic work. Even though the beginnings of socioanalytic investigation lay in the mid-twentieth century, a broad look across several methodologies has not been done before, despite separate publications dealing with particular methods. In addition, several new methods have been developed in recent years, which the present work incorporates.Connecting all these methods is their aim of 'tapping into' the dynamic operation of what the author calls 'the associative unconscious' within and between social systems. The associative unconscious is the unconscious at a systemic level. Each of the methods discussed in this book accesses the associative unconscious in different ways. They help bring hidden dynamics to the surface for people to see how they influence, aid, or inhibit their activities. Excitingly, they can show what we know at some level but have not yet been able to use. And, because the methods explore social systems, they can contribute to new collaborative endeavours for thinking the future.",

                "name": "Art in Psychoanalysis",
                "subtitle": "A Contemporary Approach to Creativity and Analytic Practice",
                "description": "A revolution is brewing in psychoanalysis: after a century of struggle to define psychoanalysis as a science, the concept of psychoanalysis as an art is finding expression in an unconventional 'return to Freud' that reformulates the relationship between art and psychoanalysis and in this process, discovers and explores uncharted routes through art to re-think problems in contemporary clinical work. This book explores recent contributions to the status of psychoanalytic thought in relation to art and creativity and the implications of these investigations for todays analytic practice. The title, 'Art in Psychoanalysis', reflects its double perspective: art and its contributions to theory and clinical practice on the one hand, and the response from psychoanalysis and its \"interpretation\" of art. These essays expose the \"aesthetic value of analytic work when it is able to 'create' something new in the relation with the patient\".The authors surprise the reader with an immense array of fresh and stimulating hypotheses which reflect the originality of their own creative process that has overturned ideas including the 'application of psychoanalysis' to art and the entity of the object of art. Clinical advances and implications for analytic theory, creativity and the 'function of art' may be anticipated, since constant reference to clinical work communicates the creative spirit of analysts at work today. They show how the interplay of psychoanalysis and art implicit in the analyst's know-how promotes the analysand's creative potential within the analytic process. This dialogue between contemporary psychoanalysis and art enriches and renews our knowledge of psychoanalytic phenomena, particularly the new modes of psychopathology.Composed in the manner of a fresco or a symphony, some chapters are conceptually tight whereas others are more open and interpretive. Some salient topics are an inversion of \"Form and Content,\" and the \"subtle movement\" involved expressing affects beyond words, provoked by art. The different ways art transmutes personal history and the \"limits of interpretation\" are investigated. The sublime and the uncanny are revisited and an extended metapsychology of creativity is developed. The investigation of time in art reveals a \"transitional time\". The introduction of art in the analytic situation explores \"fragments of a complex world\" bordering on \"curative phenomena\" relating health to madness. A construction called an \"Ego Alter\" emerges from analytic work. This new creation, like the riddles and enigma of creativity, opens its secret world that lies between love, strangeness and alienation.",

The author gives a systematic presentation of psychoanalytic theories and develops a model of human sexuality that transgresses gender-binarities, integrates \"male\" -phallic and \"female\" - receptive parts, and encompasses the diversity of gender identifications and sexual varieties. She highlights the structural similarities between heterosexuality, homosexuality, and perversion and argues for a universal human sexuality in which men and women differ less between the sexes but individually. Freud's genital primacy is questioned as well as the cultural primacy of heterosexuality. Finally the author points out the consequences of this perspective for psychoanalytic clinical practice.",

                "description": "The Ferenczi-Jones correspondence presented here is an important document of the early history of psychoanalysis. It spans more than two decades, and addresses many of the relevant issues of the psychoanalytic movement between 1911-1933, such as Freud's relation to Stekel, Adler and Jung; the First World Wa;, the debates of the 1920s regarding the theoretical and technical ideas of Rank and Ferenczi; problems of leadership, structure, and finding a centre for the psychoanalytical movement; as well as issues related to telepathy and lay analysis. It includes thirty-seven letters and six postcards, as well as original documents waiting to be found for eight decades; these belong to the 'private', personal history of psychoanalysis and help to decode diverse aspects of the experience preserved in these documentary memories of former generations.Perhaps the most interesting aspect of this correspondence is how it allows us to build up a far more nuanced picture of the development of an extraordinary relationship between Ferenczi and Jones. It could hardly be termed harmonious, and was not devoid of rivalry and jealousy, sometimes even of hidden passion and outright hostility. Nevertheless, friendship, sympathy, collegiality and readiness for cooperation were just as important for Ferenczi and Jones as rivalry, mistrust and suspicion. This volume celebrates the 100th anniversary of the foundation in 1913 of both the British and the Hungarian Psychoanalytical Societies.",

                "subtitle": "A New Theory of Conscience",
                "description": "In this book the author makes the case for two generically distinct types of Superego, with the contention that there is a gap in the Freudian theory of the Oedipal Superego which has been recognised since its inception, but never formulated in a full revision of the theory. There are thus, Reddish argues, two distinct kinds of morality implicit in Freudian theory. Further, she maintains that there are two distinct kinds of relationship to reality which correlate with these two kinds of morality. Freud believed that morality originates in the imperative for physical survival: 'the initial helplessness of human beings is the primary source of all moral motives'. However, he did not incorporate this idea into his formulation of the Superego as heir to the Oedipus Complex. Reddish argues that the most primitive kind of morality is that dominated by an archaic Superego, with which the embryonic Ego is fully identified. The relationship to reality at this stage of psychological development is one in which morality and reality are psychically equivalent. By articulating the link between conscience arising out of the imperative for survival and conscience arising out of Oedipal anxiety, the author suggests that the evolution of individual conscience triggers an entirely new type of reality-testing, and thus an entirely new relationship to reality.",

                "description": "This book assumes that it is no longer tenable to work in healthcare without considering the person as a whole being constituted by a rich weaving of mind, body, culture, family, spirit and ecology. The MindBody approach embraces this 'whole.' But how does it transform clinical practice and training for the clinician and treatment for the patient/client? The book collects together the experiences from a diverse range of clinical practitioners (including psychotherapy, specialist medicine, general practice, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, dietetics, , nursing, and complementary and alternative medicine practitioners) who have deliberately chosen to integrate a MindBody philosophy and skill set in their clinical practices. All reflect deeply on their unique journeys in transforming their clinical encounters. Most have been trained in the dominant Western framework and have inherited the classical dualistic approach which typically keeps mind and body apart. This dualistic clinical ethos values clinician expertise, labeling, diagnosis, measurement, and grouped phenomena. The MindBody approach retains the best of the classical model as well as valuing personal experience, patient/client story, the unique patterning of the individual's illness and disease, and the healing elements of the relationship between the clinician and the patient/client. The MindBody transformation of the clinician is a challenging journey, and each clinician experiences this uniquely. From these stories the reader can see vividly the ways in which conventional healthcare can break out of its current restrictive paradigm creating new satisfaction for the clinicians and much wider treatment outcomes for patients and clients.",

In the case of childhood emotional disturbances, the need for widely available treatments is particularly pressing especially once we pay heed to the emotional turmoil also underpinning many behavioural problems. Short-term Psychoanalytic Child Therapy (PaCT) is an emotion-oriented, play-focused treatment that aims to help the child to relinquish rigidly held maladaptive defence mechanisms that give rise to symptoms and interfere with healthy development. PaCT comprises twenty to twenty-five psychotherapeutic sessions conducted in alternating settings (parent-child, child alone, parents alone), in which a relational theme is uncovered and worked through. Here, the authors have created a manual for PaCT, successfully retaining the complexity of each treatment whilst making the application accessible for a greater range of settings. This manual will be of use to trainees and practising therapists alike.",

                "subtitle": "The Portman Clinic Approach",
                "description": "Forensic Group Psychotherapy: The Portman Clinic Approach stands as a comprehensive account of theoretical and practical approaches to the group treatment of patients who present with problematic sexual behaviour, criminality, and violence. The first section of the book focusses upon key aspects of group analytic theory as applied to clinical work with forensic patients and describes how to provide a setting in which treatment can proceed. This is followed by a series of chapters with a clinical emphasis, providing a rich and evocative account of the challenges of working with forensic patients in groups. The guiding principle is the need to understand and work with the victim within the perpetrator. This book is a must for any clinician working with forensic patients in groups. Though based on the work of an outpatient clinic, there are ideas and techniques that can be applied to many other settings, including prison, probation, and inpatient.",

                "name": "The Late Teenage Years",
                "subtitle": "From Seventeen to Adulthood",
                "description": "The problems which the individual has to deal with in adolescence are qualitatively different from those of childhood; they are related in particular to the adolescent's reaction/responses to the physical development of his/her sexual body, and the changing relationship to the parents and to the world in which he/she lives. We have to take into account the revival of infantile conflicts and the newly emerging sexual and aggressive urges and experiences, both of which have to be integrated by the adolescent so that a new equilibrium can be created. The adolescent finds himself in the very difficult position of having to make all these readjustments whilst he has to deal with the subsequent conflicts and anxieties. The earlier passionate mixture of love and hatred that characterizes the attachment and dependency on the parents must now be renounced until the adolescent reaches a point at which it is possible for him to confirm his own identity and find new love relationships. These must neither be based too much on repetition of previous early attachments, nor be entirely and exaggeratedly opposed to them. It goes without saying that none of this can be achieved without much upheaval and experimenting. The step from adolescence to adulthood is complex and involves not only the individual's emotional experience, but also the continuous input, reactions from the world in which he/she lives. It is these interactions that are described and discussed in this book.",
