Their extraordinarily detailed arts are rich in cultural symbolism; they are always breathtakingly beautifuland they are typically made by women. Like other Amazigh (Berber) groups (but in contrast to the Arab societies of North Africa), the Ait Khabbash have entrusted their artistic responsibilities to women. Cynthia Becker spent years in Morocco living among these women and, through family connections and female fellowship, achieved unprecedented access to the artistic rituals of the Ait Khabbash. The result is more than a stunning examination of the arts themselves, it is also an illumination of women's roles in Islamic North Africa and the many ways in which women negotiate complex social and religious issues. One of the reasons Amazigh women are artists is that the arts are expressions of ethnic identity, and it follows that the guardians of Amazigh identity ought to be those who literally ensure its continuation from generation to generation, the Amazigh women. Not surprisingly, the arts are visual expressions of womanhood, and fertility symbols are prevalent. Controlling the visual symbols of Amazigh identity has given these women power and prestige. Their clothing, tattoos, and jewelry are public identity statements; such public artistic expressions contrast with the stereotype that women in the Islamic world are secluded and veiled. But their role as public identity symbols can also be restrictive, and history (French colonialism, the subsequent rise of an Arab-dominated government in Morocco, and the recent emergence of a transnational Berber movement) has forced Ait Khabbash women to adapt their arts as their people adapt to the contemporary world. By framing Amazigh arts with historical and cultural context, Cynthia Becker allows the reader to see the full measure of these fascinating artworks.", "author": "Cynthia Becker", "slug": "amazigh-arts-in-morocco-42104-9780292756199-cynthia-becker", "thumbnail_image": "//redshelf-images.s3-external-1.amazonaws.com/thumbnail/9780292756199.jpg", "default_thumbnail_image": "//redshelf-images.s3-external-1.amazonaws.com/thumbnail/default_book_thumbnail.jpg", "product_type": "book", "product_id": "42104", "product_url": "/app/ecom/book/42104/amazigh-arts-in-morocco-42104-9780292756199-cynthia-becker", "bisac_codes": [ "HIS026000", "DES013000" ], "items_count": null, "identifiers": { "ISBN13": "9780292712959", "EISBN13": "9780292756199" }, "drm": null, "cover_image": null, "default_cover_image": null, "book_type": null }, "relationships": { "lowest_offering": { "data": { "type": "offerings", "id": "00010023724538" } } } }, { "type": "Product", "id": "00010000042103", "attributes": { "name": "The Ecology of the Bari", "subtitle": "Rainforest Horticulturalists of South America", "description": "Inhabiting the rainforest of the southwest Maracaibo Basin, split by the border between Colombia and Venezuela, the Bari have survived centuries of incursions. The Ecology of the Bari showcases the findings of their singular long-term study. Detailing the Baris relations with natural and social environments, this work presents quantitative subsistence data unmatched elsewhere in anthropological publications. The authors lengthy longitudinal fieldwork provided the rare opportunity to study a tribal people before, during, and after their aboriginal patterns of subsistence and reproduction were eroded by the modern world. Of particular interest is the books exploration of partible paternitythe widespread belief in lowland South America that a child can have more than one biological father. The study illustrates its quantitative findings with an in-depth biographical sketch of the remarkable life of an individual Bari woman and a history of Bari relations with outsiders, as well as a description of the rainforest environment that has informed all aspects of Bari history for the past five hundred years. Yet this characteristic of the Homeric epics has led scholars to underplay the poems use of non-direct speech, the importance of speech represented by characters, and the overall sophistication of Homeric narrative as measured by its approach to speech representation. In this pathfinding study by contrast, Deborah Beck undertakes the first systematic examination of all the speeches presented in the Homeric poems to show that Homeric speech presentation is a unified system that includes both direct quotation and non-direct modes of speech presentation. Drawing on the fields of narratology and linguistics, Beck demonstrates that the Iliad and the Odyssey represent speech in a broader and more nuanced manner than has been perceived before, enabling us to reevaluate our understanding of supposedly modern techniques of speech representation and to refine our idea of where Homeric poetry belongs in the history of Western literature. She also broadens ideas of narratology by connecting them more strongly with relevant areas of linguistics, as she uses both to examine the full range of speech representational strategies in the Homeric poems. Through this in-depth analysis of how speech is represented in the Homeric poems, Beck seeks to make both the process of their composition and the resulting poems themselves seem more accessible, despite pervasive uncertainties about how and when the poems were put together.", "author": "Deborah Beck", "slug": "speech-presentation-in-homeric-epic-42102-9780292738829-deborah-beck", "thumbnail_image": "//redshelf-images.s3-external-1.amazonaws.com/thumbnail/9780292738829.jpg", "default_thumbnail_image": "//redshelf-images.s3-external-1.amazonaws.com/thumbnail/default_book_thumbnail.jpg", "product_type": "book", "product_id": "42102", "product_url": "/app/ecom/book/42102/speech-presentation-in-homeric-epic-42102-9780292738829-deborah-beck", "bisac_codes": [ "LIT004190" ], "items_count": null, "identifiers": { "ISBN13": "9780292738805", "EISBN13": "9780292738829" }, "drm": null, "cover_image": null, "default_cover_image": null, "book_type": null }, "relationships": { "lowest_offering": { "data": { "type": "offerings", "id": "00010023724589" } } } }, { "type": "Product", "id": "00010000042101", "attributes": { "name": "Subterranean Struggles", "subtitle": "New Dynamics of Mining, Oil, and Gas in Latin America", "description": "Over the past two decades, the extraction of nonrenewable resources in Latin America has given rise to many forms of struggle, particularly among disadvantaged populations. The first analytical collection to combine geographical and political ecological approaches to the post-1990s changes in Latin Americas extractive economy, Subterranean Struggles closely examines the factors driving this expansion and the sociopolitical, environmental, and political economic consequences it has wrought. In this analysis, more than a dozen experts explore the many facets of struggles surrounding extraction, from protests in the vicinity of extractive operations to the everyday efforts of excluded residents who try to adapt their livelihoods while industries profoundly impact their lived spaces. The book explores the implications of extractive industry for ideas of nature, region, and nation; resource nationalism and environmental governance; conservation, territory, and indigenous livelihoods in the Amazon and Andes; everyday life and livelihood in areas affected by small- and large-scale mining alike; and overall patterns of social mobilization across the region. Arguing that such struggles are an integral part of the new extractive economy in Latin America, the authors document the increasingly conflictive character of these interactions, raising important challenges for theory, for policy, and for social research methodologies. Bringing this long-neglected history to life, The Making of Arab Americans overturns the notion of an Arab population that was too diverse to share common goals. Tracing the forgotten histories of the Free Syria Society, the New Syria Party, the Arab National League, and the Institute of Arab American Affairs, the book restores a timely aspect of our understanding of an area (then called Syria) that comprises modern-day Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Israel, and Palestine. Hani Bawardi examines the numerous Arab American political advocacy organizations that thrived before World War I, showing how they influenced Syrian and Arab nationalism. He further offers an in-depth analysis exploring how World War II helped introduce a new Arab American identity as priorities shifted and the quest for assimilation intensified. In addition, the book enriches our understanding of the years leading to the Cold War by tracing both the Arab National Leagues transition to the Institute of Arab American Affairs and new campaigns to enhance mutual understanding between the United States and the Middle East. Mexican-American Protestants have faced the double challenge of being a religious minority within the larger Mexican-American community and a cultural minority within their Protestant denominations. As they have negotiated and sought to reconcile these two worlds over nearly two centuries, los Protestantes have melded Anglo-American Protestantism with Mexican-American culture to create a truly indigenous, authentic, and empowering faith tradition in the Mexican-American community. This book presents the first comparative history of Hispanic Methodists, Presbyterians, and Baptists in Texas. Covering a broad sweep from the 1830s to the 1990s, Paul Barton examines how Mexican-American Protestant identities have formed and evolved as los Protestantes interacted with their two very different communities in the barrio and in the Protestant church. He looks at historical trends and events that affected Mexican-American Protestant identity at different periods and discusses why and how shifts in los Protestantes' sense of identity occurred. Under the leadership of the renowned soldier-statesman Perikles, Athenians began rebuilding the Akropolis, where they created the still awe-inspiring Parthenon. Athenians also reached a zenith of artistic achievement in sculpture, vase painting, and architecture, which provided continuing inspiration for many succeeding generations. The specially commissioned essays in this volume offer a fresh, innovative panorama of the art, architecture, history, culture, and influence of Periklean Athens. Written by leading experts in the field, the articles cover a wide range of topics, including: An evaluation of Perikles' military leadership during the early stages of the Peloponnesian War. Iconographical and iconological studies of vase paintings, wall paintings, and sculpture. Explorations of the Parthenon and other monuments of the Athenian Akropolis. The legacy of Periklean Athens and its influence upon later art. Assessments of the modern reception of the Akropolis. This amassing of empirical knowledge about Spain's American possessions had two far-reaching effects. It overturned the medieval understanding of nature derived from Classical texts and helped initiate the modern scientific revolution. And it allowed Spain to commodify and control the natural resources upon which it built its American empire. In this book, Antonio Barrera-Osorio investigates how Spain's need for accurate information about its American colonies gave rise to empirical scientific practices and their institutionalization, which, he asserts, was Spain's chief contribution to the early scientific revolution. He also conclusively links empiricism to empire-building as he focuses on five areas of Spanish activity in America: the search for commodities in, and the ecological transformation of, the New World; the institutionalization of navigational and information-gathering practices at the Spanish Casa de la Contratacion (House of Trade); the development of instruments and technologies for exploiting the natural resources of the Americas; the use of reports and questionnaires for gathering information; and the writing of natural histories about the Americas.", "author": "Antonio Barrera-Osorio", "slug": "experiencing-nature-42095-9780292782891-antonio-barrera-osorio", "thumbnail_image": "//redshelf-images.s3-external-1.amazonaws.com/thumbnail/9780292782891.jpg", "default_thumbnail_image": "//redshelf-images.s3-external-1.amazonaws.com/thumbnail/default_book_thumbnail.jpg", "product_type": "book", "product_id": "42095", "product_url": "/app/ecom/book/42095/experiencing-nature-42095-9780292782891-antonio-barrera-osorio", "bisac_codes": [ "SCI034000" ], "items_count": null, "identifiers": { "ISBN13": "9780292709812", "EISBN13": "9780292782891" }, "drm": null, "cover_image": null, "default_cover_image": null, "book_type": null }, "relationships": { "lowest_offering": { "data": { "type": "offerings", "id": "00010023725524" } } } }, { "type": "Product", "id": "00010000042093", "attributes": { "name": "Texas Political Memorabilia", "subtitle": "Buttons, Bumper Stickers, and Broadsides", "description": "Texas politicians are a lively, sometimes controversial, always entertaining breed, and the ways they have chosen to put themselves and their messages before the public are equally as interesting. To Mapuche shamans, or machi, the foye tree is of special importance, not only for its medicinal qualities but also because of its hermaphroditic flowers, which reflect the gender-shifting components of machi healing practices. Framed by the cultural constructions of gender and identity, Bacigalupo's fascinating findings span the ways in which the Chilean state stigmatizes the machi as witches and sexual deviants; how shamans use paradoxical discourses about gender to legitimatize themselves as healers and, at the same time, as modern men and women; the tree's political use as a symbol of resistance to national ideologies; and other components of these rich traditions. Yet it attracted wide attention through the publication of John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath (1939) and the images of Farm Security Administration photographers such as Dorothea Lange and Arthur Rothstein. Ironically, their work risked sublimating the subjectsreal people and actual experienceinto aesthetic artifacts, icons of suffering, deprivation, and despair. Working for the Farm Security Administration in California's migrant labor camps in 1938-39, Sanora Babb, a young journalist and short story writer, together with her sister Dorothy, a gifted amateur photographer, entered the intimacy of the dispossessed farmers' lives as insiders, evidenced in the immediacy and accuracy of their writings and photos. Born in Oklahoma and raised on a dryland farm, the Babb sisters had unparalleled access to the day-by-day harsh reality of field labor and family life. This book presents a vivid, firsthand account of the Dust Bowl refugees, the migrant labor camps, and the growth of labor activism among Anglo and Mexican farm workers in California's agricultural valleys linked by the \"Dirty Plate Trail\" (Highway 99). It draws upon the detailed field notes that Sanora Babb wrote while in the camps, as well as on published articles and short stories about the migrant workers and an excerpt from her Dust Bowl novel, Whose Names Are Unknown. Like Sanora's writing, Dorothy's photos reveal an unmediated, personal encounter with the migrants, portraying the social and emotional realities of their actual living and working conditions, together with their efforts to organize and to seek temporary recreation. An authority in working-class literature and history, volume editor Douglas Wixson places the Babb sisters' work in relevant historical and social-political contexts, examining their role in reconfiguring the Dust Bowl exodus as a site of memory in the national consciousness. Focusing on the material conditions of everyday existence among the Dust Bowl refugees, the words and images of these two perceptive young women clearly show that, contrary to stereotype, the \"Okies\" were a widely diverse people, including not only Steinbeck's sharecropper \"Joads\" but also literate, independent farmers who, in the democracy of the FSA camps, found effective ways to rebuild lives and create communities.", "author": "Sanora Babb, Dorothy Babb, Douglas Wixson", "slug": "on-the-dirty-plate-trail-42089-9780292782839-sanora-babb", "thumbnail_image": "//redshelf-images.s3-external-1.amazonaws.com/thumbnail/9780292782839.jpg", "default_thumbnail_image": "//redshelf-images.s3-external-1.amazonaws.com/thumbnail/default_book_thumbnail.jpg", "product_type": "book", "product_id": "42089", "product_url": "/app/ecom/book/42089/on-the-dirty-plate-trail-42089-9780292782839-sanora-babb", "bisac_codes": [ "HIS036060" ], "items_count": null, "identifiers": { "ISBN13": "9780292721449", "EISBN13": "9780292782839" }, "drm": null, "cover_image": null, "default_cover_image": null, "book_type": null }, "relationships": { "lowest_offering": { "data": { "type": "offerings", "id": "00010023724354" } } } }, { "type": "Product", "id": "00010000042088", "attributes": { "name": "After Revolution", "subtitle": "Mapping Gender and Cultural Politics in Neoliberal Nicaragua", "description": "Nicaragua's Sandinista revolution (1979-1990) initiated a broad program of social transformation to improve the situation of the working class and poor, women, and other non-elite groups through agrarian reform, restructured urban employment, and wide access to health care, education, and social services. This book explores how Nicaragua's least powerful citizens have fared in the years since the Sandinista revolution, as neoliberal governments have rolled back these state-supported reforms and introduced measures to promote the development of a market-driven economy. Drawing on ethnographic research conducted throughout the 1990s, Florence Babb describes the negative consequences that have followed the return to a capitalist path, especially for women and low-income citizens. In addition, she charts the growth of women's and other social movements (neighborhood, lesbian and gay, indigenous, youth, peace, and environmental) that have taken advantage of new openings for political mobilization. There were no printing presses, no book or periodical production, and no written signs in public places. But a groundswell of change rapidly raised the region's literacy rates, a fascinating transformation explored for the first time in Reading Palestine. Addressing an exciting aspect of Middle Eastern history as well as the power of the printed word itself, Reading Palestine describes how this hurried process intensified the role of literacy in every sphere of community life. Ami Ayalon examines Palestine's development of a modern educational system in conjunction with the emergence of a print industry, libraries and reading clubs, and the impact of print media on urban and rural populations. Yet a modern appreciation for Philodemus' place in Roman intellectual history has had to wait on the decipherment of the charred remains of Philodemus' library, which was buried in Herculaneum by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD. As improved texts and translations of Philodemus' writings have become available since the 1970s, scholars have taken a keen interest in his relations with leading Latin poets. The essays in this book, derived from papers presented at the First International Symposium on Philodemus, Vergil, and the Augustans held in 2000, offer a new baseline for understanding the effect of Philodemus and Epicureanism on both the thought and poetic practices of Vergil, Horace, and other Augustan writers. Sixteen leading scholars trace his influence on Vergil's early writings, the Eclogues and the Georgics, and on the Aeneid, as well as on the writings of Horace and others. The volume editors also provide a substantial introduction to Philodemus' philosophical ideas for all classicists seeking a fuller understanding of this pivotal figure.", "author": "David Armstrong, Jeffrey Fish, Patricia A. Few seemed to notice or care that Fed officials operated secretly with almost no public accountability. There was a courageous exception to this lack of oversight, however: Henry B. Gonzalez (D-TX)chairman of the U.S. House of Representatives Financial Services (banking) Committee. In Deception and Abuse at the Fed, Robert Auerbach, a former banking committee investigator, recounts major instances of Fed mismanagement and abuse of power that were exposed by Rep. Gonzalez, including: Blocking Congress and the public from holding powerful Fed officials accountable by falsely declaringfor 17 yearsit had no transcripts of its meetings; Manipulating the stock and bond markets in 1994 under cover of a preemptive strike against inflation; Allowing $5.5 billion to be sent to Saddam Hussein from a small Atlanta branch of a foreign bankthe result of faulty bank examination practices by the Fed; Stonewalling Congressional investigations and misleading the Washington Post about the $6,300 found on the Watergate burglars. Auerbach provides documentation of these and other abuses at the Fed, which confirms Rep. Gonzalez's belief that no government agency should be allowed to operate with the secrecy and independence in which the Federal Reserve has shrouded itself.
