"description": "
Canadas role on the world stage has increased dramatically since the middle of the twentieth century. Once an offshoot of England, we have grown to become a recognized voice internationally.

Canadian Foreign Policy: 1945-2000 is a collection of key documents and speeches tracing the evolution of Canadian foreign policy since 1945. It highlights Canadas role in the great international events of the last century from the beginnings of the United Nations through the birth of NATO, the origins of Peacekeeping, Canadas participation in the Korean War, and our involvement in the International Control Commissions in Indo-China.

The collection also shows Canadas role and influence in the Far East, from the creation of the Colombo Plan, to the recognition of the Peoples Republic of China, to our relations with Japan and the APEC countries. As well, the volume looks at disarmament, nuclear affairs, the growing influence of the provinces in foreign policy, relations with France, and the birth and impact of NAFTA. Canadas participation in the founding of the G-20 group of nations and the effect on world economic trends in the twenty-first century round out the story.
",

                "name": "The Canadian Book of Snobs",
                "subtitle": "",
                "description": "
Are you a snob? Then why not learn to do it right? Study this revolutionary work and become a Canadian Snob of Distinction!

Victoria Branden has traced the history of Snobbery from its pre-human roots to our own era, in our own country, and has enunciated the definitive Theory of Snobbery. She examines its evolution from its crude beginnings to its present confused state, with detailed study of the most important types of snobbery, distinguishing Goodsnobs from Badsnobs, experts from fumbling amateurs. Snobbery has influenced history at least as much as the invention of the wheel or the printing press, which were probably actually inspired by snob instincts.

Always staunchly patriotic, Ms. Branden has given particular attention to Canadian Snobs, who have been until this time gravely neglected in both life and literature, and has provided Canadian Snobmodels by which we can be guided to higher and better levels of Snobbery. She finds a certain lack of professionalism among Canadian Snobs: Snobbery is not acknowledged as an Olympic contender, and has received no recognition in this years \"black budget.\" So there is much to be done, urgently! Branden has thoughtfully provided Snobexercises (video later) by which you can develop Snobmuscle. Careful study, with diligent practice and iron self-discipline, will help you to achieve great heights of Snob-expertise, using techniques and materials particularly suited to the Canadian climate and social mores.

Other how-to books claim to \"make it easy\" to succeed. We do not. Achieving Snob-distinction is hard, gruelling, and incessant work but the rewards are incalculable. Any jerk can be a snob, and usually is. But to be a truly Great Snob, an upper-case Snob, a Snob who will go down in history like Beau Brummell or Oscar Wilde ah, that is attainable only by the few.
",

Its activities comprise studies of and analysis of public issues which seem at the time to be of crucial importance not only to Canadians but to all the inhabitants of the planet. The issues are discussed at annual conferences and some of the discussions have been edited and published.

The present effort was stimulated by the rapid changes in the political landscape of Eastern Europe and the consequent demise of the Cold War. It seemed at the time that those changes were about to usher in a new historical era, rich in unprecedented opportunities of improving human life, in particular of freeing humanity from the threats generated by the burgeoning arsenals of weapons of total destruction and by the degradation of the environment. It seemed that global collective effort directed at solving urgent global problems became suddenly possible. One could speak hopefully of an \"agenda\" for such collective effort.

The following members of the Group of 78 and friends sympathetic to its aims contributed to this work by submitting copy, directing us to sources, making cogent suggestions for substantive revisions or stylistic improvements:

Newton R. From voodoo rituals, infant possession, to the antics of gentle, benign spirits, including the famous love affair of Captain Swayze from the War of 1812, who entertained many a guest at the Angel Inn at Niagara-on-the-Lake, Najla recites here a few of her more entertaining ghostly encounters.

Najla Mady has been much courted by the media. On her own weekly TV show, A Psychic Hour with Najla, she predicted the assassination of Anwar Sadat. When she is not doing personal counselling, she exorcizes ghosts from homes and other places.

EXORCIZES GHOSTS??!

Is that the activity of a sane, rational personality, you might ask? Anyone who has had the delight of working with Najla will describe a most down-to-earth person. No dippy, chanting, star-gazing fanatic, this woman.

BOO!! represents a departure for most of the literature available in this genre because it is not sensationalist. Najlas single purpose is to help demystify the world of parapsychology for us ordinary folk who live only (and perhaps regrettably) in the obvious, physical realm.
",

This new work chronicles the lives of the Seamans as they make a new start in Canada.

The main theme is the building, by Caleb, the father, and his sons Cade, Sam and Ned, of a huge timber raft. Along the way they have many other adventures - a brush with the supernatural, a visit by a wealthy uncle, a return to the family home on Long Island by Ned and his mother, Martha.

The climax is the raft journey to Quebec by Caleb, with Cade, Sam, Ned and Elizabeth as crew, and the sale of their logs. While on a shopping spree in Montreal, Elizabeth is the belle at a ball.

The Seamans also get the better of an enemy, to Neds satisfaction - and that of the many readers of the first Seaman family novel.

Even those who have not read Escape will be delighted with this exciting adventure.
",

                "description": "
Weaving finely spun filaments of the lyric and mythic, Barbara Lambert creates a vivid tapestry of a year in the life of Vancouvers Allegra Schliemann, a middle-aged woman in the throes of a knotty love affair with a married man, a newly-crafted career as an artisan and a battle against a debilitating disease. Unable to see her way clear of the emotional clutter these changes wreak, Allegra hires would-be artist Brad Lindhall to fashion her a mirrored wall, praying it will bring light and clarity into the encroaching dusk of her own life. Meanwhile, in Toronto, Brads estranged wife Mona researches a work known as A Brief History of Cloth and Clay for an upcoming installation, her voice reaching into the past and across the country. In this brilliant recasting of a traditional love triangle, three artists find their way into the heart of genius, and of darkness, emerging strangely and irrevocably intertwined. Like her many mythological predecessors Philomela, Ariadne and Athena Allegra encircles lovers, entraps enemies and unfurls in the face of adversity.
",

                "description": "
We cant escape them; aliens are everywhere. They sell us soft drinks and star in their own sitcoms. But to the many people who believe they have been abducted aboard strange crafts, aliens are a very serious reality. Stories of these encounters, taken from investigators files, have been vividly depicted in television specials and motion pictures.

Despite their predominance as a cultural phenomenon, experts offer drastically conflicting opinions: aliens are harmless creatures whose aim is to better understand humans; aliens are angel-like entities here to enhance our spiritual awareness; aliens are conspiring with the government in a plot to enslave humans; and aliens are genetically breeding with humans to create a new race of hybrids.

But, what is really going on? Are aliens abducting thousands of unsuspecting people each year? Are they then inserted with tracking devices and monitored? Based on his own investigative files and almost twenty-five years of research, science writer Chris Rutkowski asks hard questions, looking critically, yet compassionately, at the stories of abductees. He is an astronomer, educator and published commentator within the area of study known as \"ufology.\" Rutowski presents case histories of many abductees, showing both their diversity and similarities, and examines how our understanding is shaped by media, by science, and by society itself.
",

Along the way we learn about the search for moose and the dramatic rare woodland buffalo hunt, conflicts with other Native nations, and the dangers of wolves and wolverines. We also witness the violent game of lacrosse, the terror of a forest fire, and the rituals that allow Algonquin boys to be declared full-grown men.

But warfare is also part of their lives, and signs point to a defining conflict between Mahingans nation, its allies the Omamiwinini (Algonquin), Ouendat (Huron), and the Nippissing against the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois).
