While in the 19th century we had the luxury of believing in almost automatic progress - an \"onward and upward\" assumption - that belief has been shattered by two world wars, more than 150 smaller ones, the invention of weapons of mass destruction, increasing degradation of the environment, both by pollution and resource exhaustion (i.e. adding \"bads\" and subtracting \"goods\" from our natural endowment), a horrendous (and increasing) gap between rich and poor within and between nations, explosions of racism and chauvinistic nationalism, increasing use of torture as a police method, totalitarian regimes, repeated episodes of genocide ... not a picture of progress toward a better world. And yet, we have not quite lost faith in the human potential for more beneficial and harmonious development.
",

                "description": "
Swathed in mist, surrounded by the secretive sea, wind wailing like the lost souls of sailors around its shores, Prince Edward Island is the ideal setting for the strange and incredible, even the supernatural. Islanders have handed down, from one generation to the next, legends and ghost stories: tales of phantom ships, Indian curses, buried pirate treasure, sea serpents, and ghostly apparitions.

In this book, Julie Watson has collected a wealth of \"true tales\"; many were told to her by those who experienced them, or knew someone who did. Others are culled from old newspapers and books; to add to their charm, the author has copied these exactly as written, including the sometimes quaint spelling and punctuation. And, strange as most of these stories are, who dares to doubt the veracity of the sailors who met a phantom schooner, the fishermen who fled a sea monster, or the countless Islanders who have dug for pirate gold, only to be terrified by something uncanny, into abandoning their search?

Perhaps you will visit West Point Lighthouse in the dark of the moon, or watch the drowned spectre of Holland Cove, trailing sea-water across the floor, or, like the doomed Peter McIntyre, venture into the cemetery at Scotch Fort at night, never to return.

On the other hand, you can curl up with this book on a dark night and find yourself transported into the haunting legends, delightful yarns, and spine-tingling ghost stories of the magical and mysterious Prince Edward Island.
",

Using Ontario as a base, the book examines how the public eagerly embraced the work of craft designers and makers, starting with the first major craft exhibit in Toronto in 1931 at Ridpaths, and following the story from those beginnings to the present.

There has never been a comprehensive book on contemporary studio crafts in any Canadian province; one is long overdue. A Fine Line places potters, weavers, textile printers, bookbinders, metalsmiths, blown glass artists, stained glass artists, furniture makers, and many more into the larger context of the crafts movement in Ontario in the second half of this century. The book features six decades of outstanding work by Ontarios designer-craftspeople in colour and in black-and-white photographs. The book also highlights the individuals who have made extraordinary contributions to the developing craft and design scene.
",

As she was always on the move he was brought up by two maiden aunts until he was accepted to train for a sea-going career on the cadet ship H.M.S. Conway. It was on the last of several voyages to New Zealand as a Merchant Navy apprentice that his life of adventure began though it did not always turn out as he had planned! The one constant in Peters life was his love of flying; by the end of his final flight in Cambodia in 1974, he had racked up more than 17,000 flying hoursin no less than 70 types of piston-engine aircraft. Peter was small in stature, but a giant among adventurers, with a rare ability to take the reader along with him through his many escapades.

Raymond Eagle, FSA Scot., is a historian with a particular interest in Scottish and military history. His early years were spent in Eastleigh, Hampshire where, at the age of ten, he had a grandstand view of the Battle of Britain. This gave him a life-long interest in aviation and a great respect for his boyhood heroes, the aircrews of the RAF and Dominion air forces. In 1949 he joined the British army as a national serviceman and was commissioned in the Royal Artillery, spending two years in Hong Kong before continuing in the Territorial Army (Militia). Arriving in Canada in March 1967 with his wife and two young sons, he worked for twenty years in executive positions with various medical charities, writing purely as a hobby. Articles published included such areas as history, environment, health and travel. In November 1991, Eagles first book was published in Scotland by Lochar Publishing of Moffat, Seton Gordon The Life and Times of a Highland Gentleman, a biography of the well-known Scottish naturalist, historian and photographer, who wrote 27 books on the Highlands and Hebrides.
",

Two men were convicted of his murder, but his body has never been found. No suspect, however, was ever found in the case of MaryAnn Plett. The pretty, young real-estate agent disappeared after going to show a property to a client but some skeletal remains were discovered seven months later.

In 1948, a family could hardly have guessed that their newly purchased home would come complete with a corpse; and, in another case, Winnie Wanners bathroom was found splattered with blood. Although her estranged husband was seen leaving the apartment with a suspiciously large bag, Winnie vanished from the face of the earth.

These chilling tales, previously little known outside Alberta, also include matters of greed, rum running, shoot-outs, and hostages. They will be every bit as fascinating to the crime buff as those found anywhere.
",

For all kinds of paddlers, and lovers of adventure and wilderness, Canexus gives the canoe its rightful place of prominence in Canadian culture.

With contributions by E.Y. Arima, Philip Chester, C.E.S. Franks, Shelagh Grant, Bob Henderson, Bruce Hodgins, Gwyneth Hoyle, William C. James, C. Fred Johnston, George Luste, Roderick A. Macdonald, Kenneth G. Roberts and Kirk Wipper.

\"The writers in Canexus bring different perspectives & abilities to these essays, but all of them reinforce the idea of the canoe as an ancient, echoing symbol; one that can illuminate our place in the north like no other.\"

M.T. Kelly, Winner of the Governor Generals Award for Literature

\"An intelligent persons guide to the place of the canoe in the Canadian culture and psyche...exciting, like fast white water and spray in your face...\"

Fred Bodsworth
",
