                "name": "Lincoln's Dilemma",
                "subtitle": "Blair, Sumner, and the Republican Struggle over Racism and Equality in the Civil War Era",
                "description": "The Civil War forced America finally to confront the contradiction between its founding values and human slavery. At the center of this historic confrontation was Abraham Lincoln. By the time this Illinois politician had risen to the office of president, the dilemma of slavery had expanded to the question of all African Americans future. In this fascinating new book Paul Escott considers the evolution of the presidents thoughts on race in relation to three other, powerful--and often conflicting--voices.Lincolns fellow Republicans Charles Sumner and Montgomery Blair played crucial roles in the shaping of their party. While both Sumner and Blair were opposed to slavery, their motivations reflected profoundly different approaches to the issue. Blairs antislavery stance stemmed from a racist dedication to remove African Americans from the country altogether. Sumner, in contrast, opposed slavery as a crusader for racial equality and a passionate abolitionist. Lincoln maintained close personal relationships with both men as he wrestled with the slavery question. In addition to these antislavery voices, Escott also weaves into his narrative the other extreme, of which Lincoln was politically aware: the virulent racism and hierarchical values that motivated not only the Confederates but surprisingly many Northerners and which were embodied by the presidents eventual assassin, John Wilkes Booth.Sumner, Blair, and violent racists like Booth each represent forces with which Lincoln had to contend as he presided over a brutal civil war and faced the issues of slavery and equality lying at its root. Other books and films have provided glimpses of the atmosphere in which the president created his Emancipation Proclamation. Lincolns Dilemma evokes more fully and brings to life the men Lincoln worked with, and against, as he moved racial equality forward.A Nation Divided: Studies in the Civil War Era",

                "description": "Engaging important discussions about social conflict, environmental change, and imperialism in Africa, Different Shades of Green points to legacies of African environmental writing, often neglected as a result of critical perspectives shaped by dominant Western conceptions of nature and environmentalism. Drawing on an interdisciplinary framework employing postcolonial studies, political ecology, environmental history, and writing by African environmental activists, Byron Caminero-Santangelo emphasizes connections within African environmental literature, highlighting how African writers have challenged unjust, ecologically destructive forms of imperial development and resource extraction.Different Shades of Green also brings into dialogue a wide range of African creative writingincluding works by Chinua Achebe, Ngugi wa Thiongo, Bessie Head, Nadine Gordimer, Zakes Mda, Nuruddin Farah, Wangari Maathai, and Ken Saro-Wiwain order to explore vexing questions for those involved in the struggle for environmental justice, in the study of political ecology, and in the environmental humanities, urging continued imaginative thinking in effecting a more equitable, sustainable future in Africa.",

It outlines the nature of threats related to climate change for the Australian bird taxa most likely to be affected by climate change, and provides recommendations on what might be done to assist them and approximate costs of doing so. It also features an analysis of how climate change will affect all Australian birds, explains why some species are likely to be more exposed or sensitive to it than others, and explores the theory and practice of conservation management under the realities of a changing climate.</p>\n<p>Species profiles include maps showing current core habitat and modelled climatic suitability based on historical records, as well as maps showing projected climatic suitability in 2085 in relation to current core habitat.</p>\n<p>Climate Change Adaptation Plan for Australian Birds is an important reference for policy makers, conservation scientists, land managers, climate change adaptation biologists, as well as bird watchers and advocacy groups.</p>\n<p>2014 Whitley Award Commendation for Zoological Management and Conservation Resource.</p>",

This glorious traverse of the Pyrenees, on the Spanish side, is a serious challenge - passing over a succession of high alpine passes where boulderfields, scree slopes and occasional snowfields may need to be crossed - but it is now well waymarked and has regular opportunites to top up on food and drink, described within the routes and in a detailed place-by-place appendix at the back. Also included are bad weather options - although the weather is often good along this route - detours to find accommodation at some points, and advice on accommodation, supplies, language and logistics, as well as a glossary including Aragon, Basque and Catalan words, to help you find your way.",

                "description": "ALL Boomer women are in the PrimeTime years, age 5075. Collectively, they are the healthiest, wealthiest, most educated, active, and influential generation of women in history.\nBaby boomers are the largest and wealthiest demographic and at the peak of their spending power. What marketing and sales professionals might not realize is that the majority of this spending power is wielded by women!\nThink of the women you know in this age bracket. Surely, many of them are grandmothers, but few of them are sitting home in their rocking chairs. "description": "In Hustle, authors Bonnie Ulman and Sal Kibler examine the new and long-term spending culture of the post-recession era, from the rush to get the biggest discount to the decline of brand loyalty. Armed with the latest market research and scores of stories from the many women interviewed, they provide the building blocks for solid marketing strategies.\nThe typical womans opinion of the economy is heavily cloaked in the sacrifices and changes that she has experienced in the past few years, and as a result, how she has reorganized her life, including where she shops, how she shops, even how she prepares to make a purchase.\nHow do you map out a strategy for your brand or company in the New Hustle Economy where your target consumer is less trusting, slower to purchase, hyper-vigilant, hyper-educated, fixated on a discount, and using all the screens available to determine if you should be part of her consideration set?\nThe good news is that the opportunities to differentiate yourself are robust and straightforward. There are core techniques that need to be executed well and delivered consistently. Be mindful that the post-recession woman operates in the \"Age of the Deal,\" which represents both a game and a high-stakes financial exercise. Her expectation is that you have a deal for her or will soon.\nWomen are looking for help, stability, and a superior transaction rather than a relationship. Your challenge is to demonstrate how you are supporting them during tough times. It has never been more important to remain consistent in your message and communicate it clearly, frequently, and across multiple platforms.\nIn the Hustle Economy, the deal has to be transparent and easy for your time-stressed customer to understand and manage. More bells and whistles or steps required to get a reward do not advance the cause. Smart marketers must figure out how to re-define their consumer partnerships and communicate with post-recession women. Hustle will guide the way.",

                "description": "Today women of color wield more clout in the marketplace because they are younger, and therefore will be customers longer than their white counterparts. They are increasing their educational attaiment giving them higher salaries and more spending power. And they are entreprenurial, and more likely to be mothers than older white women.\nWomen of all colors generate more than $1 trillion in consumer spending and another $230 billion as entrepreneurs. Yet most companies market to women as a monolithic group, aiming their messages primarily at white women.\nWith groundbreaking proprietary research Miriam Muley explores how cultural and ethnic differences shape the way women respond to life experiences. She encourages companies to embrace the cultural and ethnic identity of women of all colors with the same tenacity, commitment to grow, and deployment of resources that are given to other consumer audiences.\nThe result is a concise and practical guide to what drives women of diverse backgrounds to consider brands for future purchase decisions. Muley takes this discussion to a new level, delving deeply into the\"who\" of the women's market. She provides practical insights on what it means to be a Latina, or a woman of Asian or African-American descent and she effectively translates these insights into compelling marketing best practices that business leaders can quickly integrate into planning efforts.\nTop takeaways from The 85% Niche:\n Women of color are a vital source of employees and entrepreneurship\n Marketing to women of color requires expert understanding of gender marketing, diversity marketing, and the bridge between the two disciplines.\n Unleashing the power of women and diversity in yoru organization is the fastest track to sales growth, share dominance, and increased profit.\nThe women-of-color opportunity will succeed only if it is measured, tracked, and carries the executive sanction and consistent attention of top-level management.",

                "description": "Hip-Hop culture has had a profound impact on marketing in the past two decades and it provided an intersection for brands, sports, and popular culture. Moving from the urban market to the suburbs, from the Northeast to the South, Hip-Hop celebrities and their rhymes have shown up in many product categories from automotive and apparel to sports. Jay Z Cool even has a color named for him.|Erin O. Patton documents this impact in his new book, Under the InfluenceTracing the Hip-Hop Generations Impact on Brands, Sports, & Pop Culture.\nNow a master marketer, but once a high school athlete hooked on Hip-Hop, Patton cut his public relations teeth working for Nike on the Michael Jordan account. In that position he learned the relevance of Hip-Hop culture to the sale of basketball sneakers as well as the importance of being first and setting the trend among the urban Hip-Hop generation. Using the street as his laboratory, Patton has studied the nuances of urban Hip-Hop and even segmented the hip-hop market in a system he calls the 7 CiphersTM.\nPattons personal journey has taken him from the Homewood-Brushton section of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to Beaverton, Oregon, New York City, and Dallas and from a degree in journalism to a career in public relations and marketing. He is also an adjunct professor of sports marketing at Cox Business School, Southern Methodist University. Patton shares many examples of how Hip-Hop has been incorporated into advertising and marketing campaigns, including mistakes marketers have made by not taking the urban market seriously. A detailed case study documents the launch of the Stephon Marburys Starbury basketball sneaker (a mothers dream at $15) and Marburys mission to save the world.\nAdam Graves, senior vice president of Deutsch Advertising says of Under the Influence and Patton: If there are any marketers out there that still think they can ignore the urban market theyd better think again. As Hip-Hop culture and its influence has poured out of the cities and spread around the world, the urban market has become the market. This isnt just a book for so-called urban marketers; this should be mandatory reading for every marketer in the country.\nSilvia Alvarez, director of multicultural and charitable communications for Major League Baseball says, Under the Influence is a must read for sports industry professionals interested in growing their sport through outreach to multicultural markets. Erin Patton contributes interesting insights to the ongoing conversation around diversity in sports.",

In this book she shows how the U.S. Hispanic market is shifting from a majority of customers who are unacculturated to a majority who were born in the United States and are melding the two cultures together in ways that make them an unprecedented marketing challenge. \nThe Hispanic market is experiencing its most important socio-demographic and cultural shift since its emergence as a powerful and distinct U.S. market segment. Hispanic Customers for Life: A Fresh Look at Acculturation, explores the present Hispanic generational crossover, providing insights, data and tools to manage the generational and acculturation differences among U.S. Hispanics, immigrants and their U.S. born offspring. \nMs. Valdes, a marketing expert, is recognized as the creator of the In-culture marketing approach. A lecturer and public speaker, Ms. Valdes has been studying and writing about the Hispanic market for more than 20 years. Her earlier books, Marketing to American Latinos, A Guide to the In-Culture Approach, Parts I and II, are classics used in many universities around the country and on the bookshelves of most multicultural marketers.\nAlthough most news media speak of Hispanic consumers as only or mostly immigrants, in fact, in 2006 only 19.9 million Hispanics living in the U.S. were first generation or foreign born, whereas 24.8 million or 55 percent of the total were second, third or more generations and born in the United States. Add the 3.9 million Puerto Rican Islandersalso American citizensand the true size of the U.S.born Hispanic market today is nearly 29 million. \nThe growing segment of U.S. born Latinos poses unique business, marketing and communications challenges and opportunities. Ms. Valdes describes how to target them successfully for marketers of all kinds of products and services.She notes that there are two basic marketing platforms for Hispanics born in the United States: \n The young millennial Latinos,the second generation youth marketchildren, teens, and young adults born to foreign-born parents.\n The traditional Latinosthose born to Latino families that have been U.S. citizens for two or more generations. \nBy 2016, it will be a different Hispanic market altogether; the vast majority of Hispanics aged 20 to 29 will have been born in the United States. These Hispanic Twentysomethings will constitute a significant market segment - well acquainted with U.S. culture, however, as Ms. Valdes emphasizes, often born to at least one parent who was foreign born. Thus, straddling two cultures. In an important departure from the usual ways of viewing this market Ms. Valdes segments it by age and generation, highlighting the waves of acculturation per segment, simplifying a complex marketing landscape by helping marketers understand how different levels of acculturation change Hispanic consumer expectations and hence their responses to marketing messages. The Selig Center for Economic Growth at the University of Georgia estimates that U.S. Hispanic purchasing power increased dramatically during the 1990s and has continued to rise into the 21st century, from $212 billion in 1990 to $736 billion in 2005, a 347 percent increase over the 15 year period. \nBuying power is defined as the total personal (after-tax) income that consumers have to spend on goods and services, or disposable personal income. By 2010, Jeffrey Humphrey, director of the Selig Center, projects Hispanic buying power will top $1 trillion. By 2050, some estimates place the value of Hispanic consumer marketplace between $2.5 and $3.6 trillion.\nThe growing relevance of emotional marketing to build HeartShares, the how to's and new gold standards are described and illustrated with business case studies. \nAn additional value of the book is a comprehensive list of Hispanic-related websites, including marketing and advertising companies, trade organizations, non-profits, media, and researchers. \n",

                "description": "This is the true story of a pioneer boy who crossed the plains by ox-team with his parents to a settlement south of the Great Salt Lake. Pioneer life in the 1850s was extremely difficult for the pioneers, food was scarce, work was hard, and marauding Indians keep everyone on constant alert.\n\nWith the promise of great adventure and a better life, 11-year-old Nick Wilson ran away from home with an Indian who had befriended him. The mother of Chief Washakie, a prominent Shoshone chief, had lost her youngest son in an avalanche. She adopted the white boy as her own. Nick spent the next two years with the Shoshone learning their language and culture and developing the skills of a hunter. He participated in buffalo hunts, fought off grizzly bears, witnessed Indian wars, and even survived being shot in the head with an arrow and left to die.\n\nLater, he became a trapper, was one of the original Pony Express riders, worked as an overland stagecoach driver, and served as an army scout and interpreter. He was often called to track down and negotiate peace with renegade Indians who had fled the reservation and threatened war. He found himself in danger numerous times and participated in many skirmishes with both Indians and outlaws. Growing up among the Shoshones taught him the skills he needed to survive the rough and wild west.",
