"description": "Based on the novel by Russian writer Dmitry Merezhkovsky (1867-1941), Morlock's dramatic adaptation tells the tragic story of Russian Tsar Peter the Great's conflict with his only surviving son and heir, Tsarevitch Alexis. Peter, an autocrat who was determined to modernize Russia at all costs, dealt brutally with any opposition--but found his most stubborn and potent resistance in his own home in the person of Alexis. This was a battle of wills that could end in only one way, given the nature of the Tsar's personality and the enormous power that he wielded. The ultimate tragedy is that Peter loved his son, and Alexis his father--but neither could find a way in which to reconcile their political differences. Shades of the twenty-first century! A riveting psychodrama.",

Chief-Inspector Calthorp of Scotland Yard is called upon to look into the disappearance, and his investigations lead him to question Hexleys ex-fiancee, Elsa Farraday. Farraday writes horror-tinged mysteries under a pseudonym, and lives by herself in an old house in the English countryside. She eventually confesses that she murdered the artist and threw his body into a swamp. But the girls odd, even peculiar mannerisms puzzle Calthorp, and he hesitates to make an arrest when no trace of Hexley's body can be found--or even any proof of his death. Ultimately, he calls in Dr. Adam Castle, the redoubtable psychiatrist and investigator, to help solve the case. Is Elsa a cold-blooded murderer mining her own crimes for her lurid novels? Or is she just an unfortunate \"lost soul\" who was in the wrong place at the wrong time? An absolutely first-rate psychological thriller!",

And after a cursory look at what was called Pointe Nueve, I doubted a decent antique could be found to buy in the entire collection of rusty, metal-roofed buildings. At least I knew not to expect to find a body there. The alligators would have taken care of that weeks ago. OK, so I can be wrong once in a while...?Louisiana antique dealer Marc DeVarney, a well-respected businessman, has suddenly gone missing, and J. Pletcher and Raina Lambert, investigative consultants, are hired by his family to locate the man--or his remains. Their quest sends them scurrying through the area around New Orleans, from the wealthy mansions of the Garden District to the swamps and bayous of small, nearby fishing villages. With the aid of a unique cast of New Orleans characters, including a licensed witch, a game warden, local ?royalty,? a brilliant attorney, flea market vendors, and assorted street people, they must sort through a myriad of deceptions to confront the twisted evil secrets of the past. A marvelously evocative mystery thriller.",

And who's been blabbing about his racehorse-doping past? The love of his life has made a ten-year vow of celibacy to the Virgin Mary. Tom's Goth daughter's girlfriend's obese sister has vanished, extremely foul play suspected. Meanwhile, an unusual racing camel named Nile Fever has become an animal of interest to the Australian Federal Police, and Tom is up to his neck in the middle of the mess. I'm Dying Here is a darkly comic crime caper that leaves no taboo, or cell phone, unviolated. \"This is a comic, crazy, original crime novel. You won't find another one like it this year, or, more likely, ever.\" Bill Crider. \"What it reminds me of, powerfully, is a Donald Westlake comic novel about Dormunder. If you did smart, funny caper novels, I suspect you'll like this one as much as I do.\" Todd Mason. \"Think anything Joseph Wambaugh, and then make it much more funny, and you start to get an idea of how much fun this is to read.\" Amazon five-star review.",

The broken chimneys stretched up like hands to the heavens, the eyeless sockets of the windows staring intently along the twisting drive. There were eldritch shadows in the house. On the floor of the library at the rear of the house, the strange cabalistic designs glowed with an eerie, devilish light. There was a flickering inside the room as of corpse candles, a cold radiance, a manifestation of the aura of evil that had never left the place, which was crystallised inside its very walls. This was a house of evil, filled with THE LONELY SHADOWS of the dead! \n\nAlso included in this collection are \"The Seventh Image,\" \"Shirley's Ghost,\" and the two Cthulhu Mythos stories, \"Undersea Quest\" and \"Innsmouth Bane.\"\n\nFirst-rate horror by a master of the genre!",

Mr. Chipping conquers his inability to connect with his students, as well as his initial shyness, when he marries Katherine, a young woman whom he meets on holiday and who quickly picks up on calling him by his nickname, \"Chips.\" \n\nDespite his own mediocre academic record, he goes on to have an illustrious career as an inspiring educator at Brookfield. Although the book is unabashedly sentimental, it also depicts the sweeping social changes that Chips experiences throughout his life: he begins his tenure at Brookfield in 1870, as the Franco-Prussian War is breaking out, and lies on his deathbed shortly after Adolf Hitler's rise to power. He is seen as an individual who is able to connect to anyone on a human level, beyond what he (by proxy of his former wife) views as petty politics, such as the strikers, the Boers, and a German friend.",

Edgar Allan Poe's great detective, Auguste Dupin, who's endangered because of his connection to Zann, must not only figure out who--but why. \n\nIn the original novella, \"The Seeds from the Mountains of Madness,\" it turns out that the famous Captain Oates, whose body was never found after he left Scott's tent in the Antarctic, did not die after all--or, if he did, still retained his ability to function in the world. Sent back to England with a mission to fulfill, Oates seeks the help of an old school friend, a veteran of the Great War--who must also play detective, endeavoring to determine who or what has sent Oates back--and, of course, why! \n\nAlso included are two short stories, \"The Holocaust of Ecstasy\" and \"The Truth About Pickman.\" \n\nRiveting horror--gripping mystery--from a master storyteller.",

"description": "Paul Di Filippo is one of Science Fiction's finest short story writers, wild, witty, exuberantly imaginative; Babylon Sisters and Other Posthumans is a generous showcase of his strange, transformative, and powerful hard science fiction visions.\n\nThe fourteen stories collected here are glimpses into the most fantastic possibilities of human evolution-biological, social, and cultural. From a New York split into warring walled enclaves, to the destiny of our species as a strain of virus, to an Africa made over by nanotech messiahs, to a future Earth protected by half-alien angels, to wars of liberation from what we have always so tragically been: these are only some of the awe-inspiring transitions to be found in Babylon Sisters. Read here of rebellion by books against their librarian, of cosmic destiny remade by stellar lunatics, of disorienting ventures beyond the boundaries of the human; discover here the perverse and terrible dangers of the age of posthumanity.",
