                "name": "Basic Machines and How They Work",
                "subtitle": "",
                "description": "This revised edition of an extremely clear Navy training manual leaves nothing to be desired in its presentation. Thorough in its coverage of basic theory, from the lever and inclined plane to internal combustion engines and power trains, it requires nothing more than an understanding of the most elementary mathematics. Beginning with the simplest of machines the lever the text proceeds to discussions of the block and tackle (pulleys and hoists), wheel and axle, the inclined plane and the wedge, the screw, and different types of gears (simple, spur, bevel, herringbone, spiral, worm, etc.). A chapter on the concept of work discusses the measurement of work, friction, and efficiency; this is followed by investigations of power, force, and pressure, with explanations of the uses of scales, balances, gauges, and barometers. The fundamentals of hydrostatic and hydraulic machines (such as the hydraulic braking system and the hydraulic press) are discussed in detail. The remaining chapters cover machine elements (bearings and springs), basic mechanisms (gear differential, couplings, cams, clutches), the internal combustion engine and power trains (including explanations of various transmission systems synchromesh, auxiliary, etc.). Every concept is clearly defined, and discussions always build easily from elementary theory to specific applications familiar to anyone with the slightest interest in mechanics. Important concepts, machine components, and techniques are clearly illustrated in more than 200 diagrams, drawings, and cross-sections that reveal inner workings all of these help to clarify even further an already clear and well-organized presentation. Although it was originally designed for use in U.S. Naval Training Schools, this book can be used to great advantage as a basic text in mechanical engineering in standard technical schools, and it will be immensely valuable even to lay readers who desire a basic knowledge of mechanics.",

                "name": "Van Gogh on Art and Artists",
                "subtitle": "Letters to Emile Bernard",
                "description": "\"In a picture I want to say something comforting as music is comforting,\" Vincent van Gogh confided to his friend and fellow artist, Emile Bernard. \"I want to paint men and women with that something of the eternal which the halo used to symbolize and which we seek to give by the actual radiance and vibration of our colorings.\" Written in the years 1887 to 1889, these letters are among the most important and relevant sources of insight into van Gogh's life and art. Apart from their fascinating content, they are among the most sensitive and perceptive studies ever published about the man and the artist.On his decision to make the letters public, Barnard commented, \"After reading them one could not doubt his [van Gogh's] sincerity, his character, nor his originality; there, pulsating with life, one would find the whole of him.\" Indeed, these 23 letters, eloquently translated into English, radiate with their author's impulsiveness, intensity, and mysticism. In one van Gogh admits: \"I can't disguise from you the fact that I like the country, having been brought up there floods of memories of the past, aspirations towards that infinity, of which the sower and the sheaves are symbols, enchant me now as then. But I wonder when I'll get my starry sky done, a picture which haunts me always.\" Complemented by handsome black-and-white reproductions of some of van Gogh's major paintings and facsimiles from his letters, this volume is essential reading for scholars and students of art and will be treasured by artists and art lovers alike.",

In this lively, perceptive, and scholarly study, a noted historian of science provides the first in-depth account of this milestone's achievement.Combining scientific and historical approaches, the narrative vividly recaptures the excitement of the conceptualization and evolution of ideas that led to the discovery of the genetic \"secret of life.\" The story unfolds along several major lines: long-chain macromolecules; nucleic acids; bacterial transformations; the intellectual evolutions of physicists, chemists, and biologists; and the cross-pollination of scientific disciplines that unlocked the structural secrets of DNA. Francis Crick provides an illuminating Foreword for this abundantly illustrated and thought-provoking retelling of a great scientific detective story.",

                "description": "Before the invention of photography, in the days when illustrated books were inordinately costly, one means of satisfying the universal human desire for pictures was the so-called \"catch-penny.\" This was an engraved sheet of paper, sometimes filled with illustrations, sometimes with verse, sometimes with both, but hawked on the streets of London for a penny. Millions of these broadsides must have been printed in the 18th century, but most of them have perished or lie inaccessible in the print collection of the great libraries.By a fortunate chance, a unique collection of late-18th-century broadsides, all printed by the London firm of Bowles and Carver, recently came on the market. Reprinted for the first time in almost 200 years, these fabulously rare prints reveal the world of delight and surprise that must have been felt by the original purchasers of this fascinating folk art.Plebeian humor, vital, earthy, is the chief characteristic of this range of prints: familiar types of the day, perhaps individuals (Peggy Bacon-face, Squire Somebody, Bet Boozer); the characters of literature (Sir John Falstaff, in a particularly gross form); birds and animals, by artists who surely never saw them; children's born-book sheets, with alphabets, objects to be spelled, early nursery rhymes, including the first appearance of certain Mother Goose rhymes; ladies of fashion; Captain Macheath and Lucy Locket from The Beggar's Opera; great ships; trades, occupations, street cries; the Royal Family; the traditional heroes of England; puzzle pictures find the giant; soldiers; The Wonderful Pig; and a host of others.Between Hogarth and Gillray in style, this collection offers a close-up view of the 1780s and 1790s not recorded elsewhere. It serves its original purpose: to delight, entertain, amuse, and instruct adults and children alike. Today, however, it has another use: a new, strong source of picture material for commercial artists and designers.",

This comprehensive three-part treatment begins with a consideration of the simplest geometric manifolds: line-segment, area, and volume as relative magnitudes; the Grassmann determinant principle for the plane and the Grassmann principle for space; classification of the elementary configurations of space according to their behavior under transformation of rectangular coordinates; and derivative manifolds. The second section, on geometric transformations, examines affine and projective transformations; higher point transformations; transformations with change of space element; and the theory of the imaginary. The text concludes with a systematic discussion of geometry and its foundations. 1939 edition. 141 figures.",

Designed to explain and demonstrate mathematical phenomena through the use of photographs and diagrams, Dr. Steinhauss thought-provoking exposition ranges from simple puzzles and games to more advanced problems in mathematics.For this revised and enlarged edition, the author added material on such wide-ranging topics as the psychology of lottery players, the arrangement of chromosomes in a human cell, new and larger prime numbers, the fair division of a cake, how to find the shortest possible way to link a dozen locations by rail, and many other absorbing conundrums.This appealing volume reflects the authors longstanding concern with demonstrating the practical and concrete applications of mathematics as well as its theoretical aspects. It not only clearly and convincingly answers the question asked of Dr. Steinhaus but also offers readers a fascinating glimpse into the world of numbers and their uses.",

But what exactly is a number? When did man begin to count and record numbers? Who made the first calculating machine-and when? At what point did people first think of solving problems by equations? These and many other questions about numbers are answered in this engrossing, clearly written book.Written for general readers by a teacher of mathematics, the jargon-free text traces the evolution of counting systems, examines important milestones, investigates numbers, words, and symbols used around the world, and identifies common roots. The dawn of numerals is also covered, as are fractions, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, arithmetic symbols, the origins of infinite cardinal arithmetic, symbols for the unknown, the status of zero, numbers and religious belief, recreational math, algebra, the use of calculators from the abacus to the computer and a host of other topics.This entertaining and authoritative book will not only provide general readers with a clearer understanding of numbers and counting systems but will also serve teachers as a useful resource. \"The success of Flegg's lively exposition and the care he gives to his surprisingly exciting topic recommend this book to every library.\" Choice.",

                "description": "A rising tide of witchcraft hysteria overwhelmed the sober Puritan communities of 17th-century New England, culminating in the notorious Salem witch trials of 1692. Rooted in religious zealotry as well as political friction and property disputes, the witch-hunts ranged beyond the gallows to ruin countless innocent lives. Voices from both sides of the controversy can be heard within this compilation of revealing documents from one of American historys darkest eras.Assembled by a distinguished historian, this volume comprises 13 original narratives by judges, ministers, government officials, and others involved in the trials and persecution of the accused. Many firsthand reports from the men and women charged with sorcery appear here, along with accounts of the evidence against them, tests for witchcraft, trials and executions, and much more. Written by such famous figures as Increase and Cotton Mather (and featuring the first publication of the latter's \"A Brand Pluck'd Out of the Burning\"), the narratives include \"Lithobolia, or the Stone-Throwing Devil,\" by Richard Chamberlain (1698); \"Memorable Providences, Relating to Witchcrafts and Possessions,\" by Cotton Mather (1689); \"A Brief and True Narrative of Witchcraft at Salem Village,\" by Deodat Lawson (1692); \"A Modest Inquiry into the Nature of Witchcraft,\" by John Hale (1702); and more.A peerless source of firsthand information, this compilation offers a superb resource to anyone interested in the belief in witchcraft and its effect on colonial America.",

                "description": "Innovative and wide-ranging, this treatment combines precise mathematic style with strong physical intuition. Written by a well-known physicist for advanced undergraduates and graduate students, the book's broad spectrum of applications includes negative temperatures and heat capacities, general and special relativistic effects, black hole thermodynamics, gravitational collapse, energy conversion problems, and efficiencies including simple heat pump theory.The basic ideas and mathematical formulation of thermodynamics are presented in a modern, clear way with the Caratheodory method, which is employed fully, but in simple terms and without advanced mathematics. Statistical mechanics are based on ideas from information theory, and the simpler ideal systems are covered in close connection with the thermodynamic treatment. Mathematical steps are displayed in detail, and abundant problems include worked solutions.",

                "description": "This enlightening survey of mathematical concept formation holds a natural appeal to philosophically minded readers, and no formal training in mathematics is necessary to appreciate its clear exposition of mathematic fundamentals. Rather than a system of theorems with completely developed proofs or examples of applications, readers will encounter a coherent presentation of mathematical ideas that begins with the natural numbers and basic laws of arithmetic and progresses to the problems of the real-number continuum and concepts of the calculus.Contents include examinations of the various types of numbers and a criticism of the extension of numbers; arithmetic, geometry, and the rigorous construction of the theory of integers; the rational numbers, the foundation of the arithmetic of natural numbers, and the rigorous construction of elementary arithmetic. Advanced topics encompass the principle of complete induction; the limit and point of accumulation; operating with sequences and differential quotient; remarkable curves; real numbers and ultrareal numbers; and complex and hypercomplex numbers.In issues of mathematical philosophy, the author explores basic theoretical differences that have been a source of debate among the most prominent scholars and on which contemporary mathematicians remain divided. \"With exceptional clarity, but with no evasion of essential ideas, the author outlines the fundamental structure of mathematics.\" Carl B. One of the largest and finest available collections, the catalog covers general properties of curves and types of derived curves. The curves and the values of their parameters are illustrated by nearly 90 images from a CalComp digital incremental plotter. Suitable for students and researchers in geometry and computer science, the text begins by introducing general properties of curves and types of derived curves. Subsequent chapters apply these properties to conics and polynomials, cubic and quartic curves, algebraic curves of high degree, and transcendental curves. A total of more than 60 special curves are featured, each illustrated with one or more CalComp plots containing curves in up to eight different variants. Indexes provide tables of derived curves, curve names, and a 95-item guide to further reading.",
