He is honorary Professor of Atomic and Molecular Physics at the College de France in Paris. With his collaborators he has written 4 books on Quantum Mechanics, Quantum Electrodynamics, Quantum Optics, Levy Statistics and about 200 theoretical and experimental papers on various problems of atomic physics. He is a member or a foreign associate of several other Academies in the world. He shared the 1997 Nobel Prize in Physics with Steven Chu and William Phillips, for his work on the development of methods to cool and trap atoms with laser light.David GueryOdelin is an atomic physicist with research interests in cold atom manipulation, atom lasers and superfluidity. After graduating from ENS (Paris), he received his Ph.D. from the physics department under the supervision of Professor Jean Dalibard for work on Bose Einstein condensation of alkali atoms. He is currently professor at University Paul Sabatier (Toulouse, France) and is a member of the Institut Universitaire de France.</p><p>Advances in Atomic Physics by Claude Cohen-Tannoudji and David Guery-Odelin is destined to become a classic. This book describes the spectacular advances of recent decades that have transformed atomic physics into one of the most exciting fields in science. The single volume constitutes a guide, a handbook, a textbook, and an encyclopedia of atomic physics. Throughout, the voice of Claude Cohen-Tannoudji whose own contributions were seminal to this transformation and whose lectures at the College de France are legendary rings through with the elegance and transparency that rank him as among the great teachers of our time. - Daniel KleppnerCenter for Ultracold Atoms, MIT<p>This book describes the breathtaking advances of atomic physics during the last decades. The authors have played a major role in these developments and describe them with unique lucidity. - Wolfgang KetterleMIT-Harvard Center for Ultracold Atoms<p>I think that this book will be of high value for the scientific community involved in atomic physics and in general for students and researchers interested in the last applications of quantum physics, both from an experimental and theoretical perspective. It contains a detailed and comprehensive overview of the most challenging developments in this fascinating field of physics, including the most recent achievements in atomic interferometry, entanglement phenomena and ultracold quantum gases. - Sandro StringariCNR-INO Center on Bose-Einstein CondensationUniversity of Trento, Italy<p>For young students just beginning an education in atomic physics to experienced researchers like myself who have lived through many of the exciting and still ongoing developments recounted here, and for all those in between, this book presents an inviting feast. Bon appetit! - William D PhillipsNobel Laureate, 1997University of Maryland<p>It is a most-interesting collection of topics organized in a unique and interesting way. - Steve HarrisStanford University<p>It is a great occasion that Claude Cohen-Tannoudji as a true master of the AMO field took the effort to summarize the experience of a lifetime in a comprehensive text. David Guery-Odelin is the ideal sparring partner on such an enterprise ... This impressive new book offers a unique overview over half a century of advances in atomic physics. It belongs on the desktops and in the iPads of every serious student of modern atomic physics. - Jook WalravenUniversity of Amsterdam<p>French Nobel Laureate Claude Cohen-Tannoudji is second to none in his understanding of the modern theory and application of atom-photon interactions. "description": "While there are several excellent books dealing with numerical analysis and analytical theory, one has to practically sift through hundreds of references. This monograph is an attempt to partly rectify this situation. It aims to introduce the application of finite-difference methods to ocean dynamics as well as review other complex methods. Systematically presented, the monograph first gives a detailed account of the basics and then go on to discuss the various applications. Recognising the impossibility of covering the entire field of ocean dynamics, the writers have chosen to focus on transport equations (diffusion and advection), shallow water phenomena tides, storm surges and tsunamis, three-dimensional time dependent oceanic motion, natural oscillations, and steady state phenomena. The many aspects covered by this book makes it an indispensable handbook and reference source to both professionals and students of this field.",

Younger students and lay people who appreciate mathematics, not to mention avid puzzle solvers, will also find the book interesting. The various problems and applications here are good for building up proficiency in counting. They are also useful for honing basic skills and techniques in general problem solving. Many of the problems avoid routine and the diligent reader will often discover more than one way of solving a particular problem, which is indeed an important awareness in problem solving. The book thus helps to give students an early start to learning problem-solving heuristics and thinking skills.",

                "description": "When an innovation is inspired by design, it transcends technology and utility. The design delights the user, seamlessly integrating the physical object, a service, and its use into something whole. A design-inspired innovation is so simple that it becomes an extension of the user. It creates meaning and a new language.Design-Inspired Innovation takes a unique look at the intersection between design and innovation, and explores the novel ways in which designers are contributing to the development of products and services. The book's scope is international, with emphasis on design activities in Boston, England, Sweden, and Milan. Through a rich variety of cases and cultural prisms, the book extends the traditional design viewpoint and stretches the context of industrial design to question and answer what design is really all about. It gives readers tools for inspiration, and shows how design can change language and even create human possibilities.",

                "subtitle": "Theory and Practice",
                "description": "A reprint of the classic text, this book popularized compact modeling of electronic and semiconductor devices and components for college and graduate-school classrooms, and manufacturing engineering, over a decade ago. The first comprehensive book on MOS transistor compact modeling, it was the most cited among similar books in the area and remains the most frequently cited today. The coverage is device-physics based and continues to be relevant to the latest advances in MOS transistor modeling. This is also the only book that discusses in detail how to measure device model parameters required for circuit simulations.The book deals with the MOS Field Effect Transistor (MOSFET) models that are derived from basic semiconductor theory. Various models are developed, ranging from simple to more sophisticated models that take into account new physical effects observed in submicron transistors used in today's (1993) MOS VLSI technology. The assumptions used to arrive at the models are emphasized so that the accuracy of the models in describing the device characteristics are clearly understood. Due to the importance of designing reliable circuits, device reliability models are also covered. Understanding these models is essential when designing circuits for state-of-the-art MOS ICs.",

                "name": "PATH INTEGRALS IN QUANT MECH (5ED)",
                "subtitle": "",
                "description": "This is the fifth, expanded edition of the comprehensive textbook published in 1990 on the theory and applications of path integrals. It is the first book to explicitly solve path integrals of a wide variety of nontrivial quantum-mechanical systems, in particular the hydrogen atom. The solutions have been made possible by two major advances. The first is a new euclidean path integral formula which increases the restricted range of applicability of Feynman's time-sliced formula to include singular attractive 1/r- and 1/r2-potentials. The second is a new nonholonomic mapping principle carrying physical laws in flat spacetime to spacetimes with curvature and torsion, which leads to time-sliced path integrals that are manifestly invariant under coordinate transformations.In addition to the time-sliced definition, the author gives a perturbative, coordinate-independent definition of path integrals, which makes them invariant under coordinate transformations. A consistent implementation of this property leads to an extension of the theory of generalized functions by defining uniquely products of distributions.The powerful Feynman-Kleinert variational approach is explained and developed systematically into a variational perturbation theory which, in contrast to ordinary perturbation theory, produces convergent results. The convergence is uniform from weak to strong couplings, opening a way to precise evaluations of analytically unsolvable path integrals in the strong-coupling regime where they describe critical phenomena.Tunneling processes are treated in detail, with applications to the lifetimes of supercurrents, the stability of metastable thermodynamic phases, and the large-order behavior of perturbation expansions. A variational treatment extends the range of validity to small barriers. A corresponding extension of the large-order perturbation theory now also applies to small orders.Special attention is devoted to path integrals with topological restrictions needed to understand the statistical properties of elementary particles and the entanglement phenomena in polymer physics and biophysics. The Chern-Simons theory of particles with fractional statistics (anyons) is introduced and applied to explain the fractional quantum Hall effect.The relevance of path integrals to financial markets is discussed, and improvements of the famous Black-Scholes formula for option prices are developed which account for the fact, recently experienced in the world markets, that large fluctuations occur much more frequently than in Gaussian distributions.",

                "description": "<p>In his groundbreaking paper Absence of diffusion in certain random lattices (1958), Philip W Anderson originated, described and developed the physical principles underlying the phenomenon of the localization of quantum objects due to disorder. Anderson's 1977 Nobel Prize citation featured that paper, which was fundamental for many subsequent developments in condensed matter physics and technical applications. After more than a half century, the subject continues to be of fundamental importance. In particular, in the last 25 years, the phenomenon of localization has proved to be crucial for the understanding of the quantum Hall effect, mesoscopic fluctuations in small conductors, some aspects of quantum chaotic behavior, and the localization and collective modes of electromagnetic and matter waves.</p><p>This unique and invaluable volume celebrates the five decades of the impact of Anderson localization on modern physics. In addition to the historical perspective on its origin, the volume provides a comprehensive description of the experimental and theoretical aspects of Anderson localization, together with its application in various areas, which include disordered metals and the metalinsulator transition, mesoscopic physics, classical systems and light, strongly-correlated systems, and mathematical models.</p><p>The volume is edited by E Abrahams, who has been a contributor in the field of localization. It provides expecting and existing parents, their families and physicians with science-based information to protect and proactively manage their child's immune system. Environmental exposures (pollutants, allergens, drugs, diet, physical factors) in the home, school and community can damage the developing immune system and increase the risk of lifelong chronic diseases such as allergies, asthma, type 1 diabetes, celiac disease and neurological problems. This book imparts specific tools to parents and their physicians to help keep the early-life immune system out of harm's way and minimize environmental health risk.",

                "description": "Clinical training and background are not synonymous with leadership. So where does a potential clinical leader turn to for advice? This small handy volume is specifically written for this purpose with information about the softer skills of leadership. It is not linked to any particular healthcare system or clinical discipline. Focus on leadership as a means to influence healthcare culture is attracting attention internationally currently. There is a lack of published material aimed at clinical leadership and the time is ripe to channel and develop formal pathways to support this unmet need. There is an appetite for understanding what leadership involves and the book is aimed at that. It provides useful information presented in a highly readable style.Readers will find the style a refreshing change from the usual academic material. Accounts of hands-on experience with non-pedantic pragmatic advice are reflected strongly in the book. It draws heavily on the concept that perceptions may not be shared. This may be the basis for fruitful communication and mutual understanding, if not necessarily agreement. Clinical leadership is an evolving discipline and seldom do currently practicing individuals have an accredited qualification. They rather build up 'on -the -job' experience. This compendium of real life experiences and educational facts attempts to bridge the gap and prepare healthcare professionals to hit the ground running in their leadership roles.The book's narrative pace will make it a good holiday or long journey read. The subject matter is neither dry, trivial nor trite.",

This book is important as it presents to readers current ideas about the role of time in theoretical cosmology.Recent observational discoveries, especially that the expansion rate of the universe is accelerating, have revolutionized the understanding of the energy content of the universe. This development leads to new possibilities for the beginning and end of cosmological time. This book emphasizes the notion of entropy and describes how it is theoretically possible that the universe may end in a finite time or that time can cycle and never end.Provided here is twenty-first century scientific knowledge, written by one of the world's most eminent theoretical physicists, that will better enable the public to discuss further the fascinating idea of time. It is ideally suited also for young people considering a career in scientific research.",

                "subtitle": "Einstein was Correct, but Bohr Won the Game",
                "description": "This book recalls, for nonscientific readers, the history of quantum mechanics, the main points of its interpretation, and Einstein's objections to it, together with the responses engendered by his arguments. Most popular discussions on the strange aspects of quantum mechanics ignore the fundamental fact that Einstein was correct in his insistence that the theory does not directly describe reality. While that fact does not remove the theory's counterintuitive features, it casts them in a different light.Context is provided by following the history of two central aspects of physics: the elucidation of the basic structure of the world made up of particles, and the explanation, as well as the prediction, of how objects move. This history, prior to quantum mechanics, reveals that whereas theories and discoveries concerning the structure of nature became increasingly realistic, the laws of motion, even as they became more powerful, became more and more abstract and remote from intuitive notions of reality. Newton's laws of motion gained their abstract power by sacrificing direct and intuitive contact with real experience. Arriving 250 years after Newton, the break with a direct description of reality embodied in quantum mechanics was nevertheless profound.",

                "description": "The purpose of this book is to share information and knowledge on allergic disorders in children with everybody, especially parents. Allergies in children are a common and growing problem. From the author's experience, many parents lack correct information on allergy. This has led to wrong approaches in dealing with the problem, with some parents experimenting with all kinds of non-scientifically proven testing and treatments. Sometimes these treatments can be harmful for the child.The book comprises twelve chapters, each covering a specific aspect of allergy in children. The first part covers general issues, such as underlying mechanisms, allergens, and epidemiology of allergic diseases. In the second part, specific allergic diseases are covered. The book ends with considerations on diagnosis and treatment, and offers suggestions for future research on allergy in children.This book will provide useful information to the public, especially parents of allergic children. Based on current scientific information, the book should help allergic children to obtain optimal diagnosis and treatment of their allergic diseases.",
