                "name": "My Fellow Americans",
                "subtitle": "Presidents Speak to the People in Troubled Times",
                "description": "The most interesting and inspiring presidential speeches, from Franklin Roosevelt to Barack Obama. From Franklin Roosevelt to Barack Obama, American presidents have faced unprecedented challenges at home and abroad. From the onset of the Great Depression, through World War II, the Korean War, the Cuban Missile Crisis, the Cold War, Desert Storm and the War on Terror, American presidents have warned and rallied the nation during each crisis. Presidents have also addressed the people in times of triumph -- the creation of the United Nations, advances in civil rights, the fall of the Berlin Wall and the end of the Cold War. My Fellow Americans includes the speeches that capture times of challenge, conflict and change, with such memorable phrases as \"We have nothing to fear but fear itself,\" \"Ask not what your country can do for you\" and \"Begin again the work of remaking\n America,\" which have entered the vernacular and have become a part of our heritage. This book is a record of how our presidents established their leadership through thick and thin. The language of the speeches reflects the country's mood over decades of fear and hope and the ongoing faith and values that sustain our nation. My Fellow Americans is divided into six parts: 1933-1945: Roosevelt 1945-1961: T ruman and Eisenhower 1961-1969: Kennedy and Johnson 1969-1981: Nixon, Ford and Carter 1981-1993: Reagan and Bush 1993-2009: Clinton, Bush and Obama. Each part is introduced with a short essay that provides a timeline and context for the events of the period. There is also\n an introduction to the book that focuses on the president's use of language to inspire listeners. Illustrated with 30 black-and-white historical photographs, My Fellow Americans is a stunning testament to America's recent history. The American Constitution, Article II, Section 3, mandates that the president \"shall from time to time give to Congress information on the state of the union.\" Since George Washington delivered the first State of the Union address in 1790, each president has addressed Congress and the people of the United States every year. Presidents have also given inaugural and farewell addresses as well as many formal and informal speeches. From these speeches there is a vivid and immediate record of the major triumphs and tragedies the nation has faced and clear portraits of the men who have led. Famous speeches in the book include:\n Roosevelt's first Inaugural Address, 1933: \"The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.\" Eisenhower's Farewell Address, 1961: \"We must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence ... by the military-industrial complex.\" Kennedy's Inaugural Address, 1961: \"Ask not what your country can do for you...\" Johnson's State of the Union Address, 1967: \"We have chosen to fight a limited war in Vietnam in an attempt to prevent a larger war.\" Reagan's Evil Empire speech, 1983: \"[Do not] ignore the facts of history and the aggressive impulses of an evil empire.\" George W. Bush's State of the Union Address, 2004: \"We are engaged in the defining ideological struggle of the 21st century.\" Barack Obama's Inaugural\n Address, 2009: \"Begin again the work of remaking America.\"",

                "description": "<p>In 1492 the Spanish humanist Antonio de Nebrija proclaimed that \"language has always been the companion of empire.\" Taking as his touchstone a wonderfully suggestive sonnet that Garcilaso de la Vega wrote in 1535 from the neighborhood of ruined Carthage in North Africa, Richard Helgerson examines how the companionship of language and empire played itself out more generally in the \"new poetry\" of sixteenth-century Europe. Along with his friend Juan Boscan, Garcilaso was one of the great pioneers of that poetry, radically reforming Spanish verse in imitation of modern Italian and ancient Roman models. As the century progressed, similar projects were undertaken in France by Ronsard and du Bellay, in Portugal by Camoes, and in England by Sidney and Spenser. And wherever the new poetry emerged, it was prompted by a sense that imperial ambitionthe quest to be in the present what Rome had been in the pastrequired a vernacular poetry comparable to the poetry of Rome.<br><br>But, as Helgerson shows, the new poetry had other commitments than to empire. Though imperial ambition looms large in Garcilaso's sonnet and others, by the end of the poem Garcilaso identifies not with Rome but with the Carthaginian queen Dido, one of empire's legendary victims. And with this startling shift, which has its counterpart in poems from all over Europe, comes one of the most important departures the poem makes from its apparent imperial agenda.<br><br>Addressing these rival concerns as they arise in a single sonnet, Richard Helgerson provides a masterful and multifaceted image of one of the most vital episodes in European literary history.</p>",

                "description": "The introduction and the twenty-one chapters in this book reflect the ongoing development and refinement of Relational and Integrative Psychotherapy. Each chapter amalgamates ideas from several theoretical frame works: Client-Centred Therapy, Gestalt Therapy, Transactional Analysis, Contemporary Psychoanalysis, and Psychoanalytic Self-Psychology, as well as inter-subjective and co-creative perspectives.The theory of 'Life Script' serves as a unifying theme to elaborate the concepts of unconscious experience, attachment and relational patterns, the essentialness of contact-in-relationship, and the centrality of relational-needs in the practice of psychotherapy. This book begins with eight philosophical assumptions essential in the practice of a relational psychotherapy. Integrated throughout the chapters is a sensitivity to both normal developmental processes and the psychological compensations that occur when there has been prolonged neglect and psychological trauma. Several case presentations illustrate the use of phenomenological and historical inquiry, developmental and rhythmic attunement, and the importance of therapeutic presence.",

                "description": "This book is about the psychological experiences of women and men who have used donor conception to create their families. The authors offer diverse accounts of their clinical, research, and personal experiences. They describe the challenge of powerful conscious and unconscious fantasies that can be aroused and how these may reawaken early anxieties and developmental struggles.Whilst recipients of donated eggs or sperm may think they are simply acquiring a factor of reproduction, they are also receiving the genetic history of another family. The sensitive management of these relationships is considered in relation to establishing healthy and well-functioning families. The way these emotional challenges are negotiated is likely to be reflected in how parents talk with children about their donor origins.",

A culture of carefully guarded clinical confidentialities inadvertently turned the consulting room into a proverbial ivory tower which has done much to obscure the psychotherapeutic body of knowledge and contributed to the myths and misinformation that surround and veil psychotherapy in the public space. This book redresses the balance and confronts some challenging, and sometimes uncomfortable, questions about the dichotomies that both characterize our relationships with the Psyche and contextualize the provision of psychotherapy services today. The contributors present contemporary discussion on a broad range of current subjects, encompassing socio-political as well as philosophical, theoretical and clinical dimensions, in an accessible manner.",

                "description": "This book addresses the ethical and philosophical basis for the teaching/learning involved in becoming a psychotherapist. How can training prepare prospective psychotherapists, counsellors, and counselling psychologists for a task whose practitioners cannot even agree as to whether it is an art or a science, an impersonal clinical interaction or a profoundly humane, even 'spiritual' encounter?The authors believe they share with their students a passion about the possibilities inherent in this particular kind of conversation. Such a meeting demands a fully personal engagement and a profoundly ethical attitude towards the relationship with the Other; it is also potentially an important beginning in 'repairing the world'. The book explores the relative importance and emphasis of the structure, content and process of psychotherapy training. Its thesis is that the teaching/learning takes place in the quality of the reciprocal meeting between the teacher and the learner. The teacher must be alert to potential, with the capacity to 'cradle', to hold gently, not squeezing, suffocating or seeking to make in one's own image, but respecting and remaining in awe of the process of transformation and emergence.In a celebration of the triumvirate of ethics, collaboration and dialogue, the authors go on to present their view of the wisdom the field of psychotherapy has to offer beyond the consulting room, in a consideration of our day to day relations with our family, friends, neighbours, and colleagues, and strangers we encounter along the way.",

                "description": "Horticultural Therapy is ideally suited to engage veterans alienated from traditional civilian healthcare routes who present with a range of complex and challenging healthcare needs. It presents, on the surface, as a deceptively simple and accessible activity. Carried out by trained professionals, it is an evidence-based, effective and cost-effective treatment. By targeting specific client-centred goals, it is able to integrate improved individual physical, emotional, cognitive and social outcomes with broader opportunities to transition successfully into civilian society through learning a valuable skill set and a meaningful occupation.This book provides a comprehensive introduction to the methods of Horticultural Therapy as applied to this unique client group. It describes the type of combat training and experiences veterans may have had, and sets out the common issues and pitfalls civilian therapists often face when working with the military. Looking to the future, it also identifies promising avenues in terms of how we may improve the treatment we offer to best serve the needs of these ex-service men and women who fight on our behalf.",

                "subtitle": "Psychic Bisexuality, the Superego, and the Centrality of the Oedipus Complex",
                "description": "This book is an attempt to get beyond pluralism by embedding psychoanalysis in philosophy and returning to Freud qua psychologist to link the depths of the mind to its surface. Beginning with the proposition that egoism and altruism are a more accurate representation of the binary of activity and passivity, The Economics of Libido revisits Freud's work to contextualize his central concepts and expand upon them. Egoism and altruism are further divided into masculine and feminine drives which can exist in either sex due to psychic bisexuality. Trevor Pederson's Freud places the Oedipus complex as the height of personal happiness in striving for passionate love or success while maturing through a series of educators and mentors. The subsequent father complex is snatched from obscurity as the recreation of the parental incest taboo amongst siblings. The ideal of commitment in relationships, fairness in one's dealings with peers, and Freud's emphasis on the non-universality of guilt are given their proper weight in his model. However, this reading of Freud's work also demonstrates that earlier forms of the superego exist and are depersonalized to create different ontologies, or levels of Being. In the tradition of Kant, what seem like relations too complex for a child to understand, the author contends, are references to the necessary subjective senses of Space, Time, the Superlative, and Prestige. Lastly, Pederson offers an explication of Wittgenstein's private language argument to justify this return to drive theory and to appreciate Freud's 'Copernican Revolution' of the mind.",
