                "subtitle": "How Your Food Choices Affect Your Health, Your Happiness, and the Future of Life on Earth",
                "description": "Originally published in 1987, Diet for a New America awakened the conscience of a nation with its startling examination of the food we buy and eat and the moral, economic, and medical price we pay for it. Drawing a clear line connecting Americas factory farm system with disease, animal cruelty, and ecological crises, Robbins makes perhaps the most eloquent argument for vegetarianism ever published. Robbins walked away from his familys business the Baskin-Robbins ice cream empire to pursue his dream of promoting a healthy society that practices compassionate stewardship of a balanced ecosystem. In Diet for a New America he presents both a disturbing portrait of our current system and a vision for the future that will educate and empower readers to change.",

                "description": "Despite our best intentions, many of us find ourselves routinely overeating at meals, snacking mindlessly, or bingeing regularly. As emotional eaters, we turn to food for comfort, soothing, distraction, and excitement. Theres a disconnection fueling our eating, robbing years from our lives, and we know it. Were tired of restrictive diets that lead back to overeating, and were ready to try something different.\n\nTherapist and life coach Julie Simon offers a new approach that addresses the true causes of overeating and weight gain: emotional and spiritual hunger and body imbalance. The Emotional Eaters Repair Manual presents five self-care skills, five body-balancing principles, and five soul-care practices that can end overeating and dieting forever. Youll learn to nurture yourself without turning to food, to correct body and brain imbalances that trigger overeating, and to address your souls hunger. Weight loss, more energy, improved health, and self-esteem will naturally follow.",

All his classmates were female. And men did not yet generally cry, hug, or do yoga. But yoga soothed and calmed Leaf as nothing else had. As his hilarious and wise tale shows, Leaf embarked on a quest for health and happiness visiting yoga studios around the country and consulting Ayurvedic physicians, swamis, and even (accidentally) a prostitute. Twenty-one years later, he teaches yoga and meditation and is the beloved founder of a holistic tutoring center that helps students whose ailments he once shared.",

It unleashes our authentic selves, radically resets our values, and deepens our sense of life purpose. From it we discover that the real nature of the universe is the very essence of benevolence. In this comprehensive work, Julia Assante probes what happens when we die, approaching with scholarly precision historical and religious accounts, near-death experiences, and after-death communication. She then presents convincing evidence of discarnate existence and communication with the dead and offers practical ways to make contact with departed loved ones to heal and overcome guilt, fear, and grief.",

Regular visits from his father, Albert, and the outpouring of support from his neighbors and community kept him going as he struggled to heal. Determined to walk again and recover from this horrible disease, he vowed that when he left the hospital he would create something to thank his community and to repay their kindness; he would create something called the Christmas House.\n\nIn the midst of the Great Depression, in 1936, those dreams came true. George left the hospital and began building an elaborate outdoor display with his father. Newspapers sent photographers; the local American Legion Post donated time and supplies; churches provided choirs and contributed food; but most of all, children and adults came to experience the first house ever decorated with elaborate outdoor holiday displays and to bask in the true spirit of Christmas.",

Through her little way, she has inspired many Catholics to love God simply, devoutly, and with great love. St. Therese believed that no act of faith is too small for God. Loving God in this way wasnt always easy for St. Therese, but even through her suffering and death at age twenty-four she tried to love God with all her heart. </p><p>In her autobiography, Story of a Soul (LHistoire dune Ame), St. Therese shares the story of her little way and helps us see God in his smallest creations. John Cleary uses passages from Story of a Soul to inspire us to embrace our own smallness this Advent and Christmas and see past the glamour and hype of a material Christmas to the small miracle that comes on December 25.</p><p> </p>",

                "name": "A Framework for Scientific Discovery through Video Games",
                "subtitle": "",
                "description": "As science becomes increasingly computational, the limits of what is\n\ncomputationally tractable become a barrier to scientific progress. Many\n\nscientific problems, however, are amenable to human problem solving skills\n\nthat complement computational power. By leveraging these skills on a larger\n\nscale---beyond the relatively few individuals currently engaged in\n\nscientific inquiry---there is the potential for new scientific discoveries.\n\n\n\nThis book presents a framework for mapping open scientific problems into\n\nvideo games. The game framework combines computational power with human\n\nproblem solving and creativity to work toward solving scientific problems\n\nthat neither computers nor humans could previously solve alone. To maximize\n\nthe potential contributors to scientific discovery, the framework designs a\n\ngame to be played by people with no formal scientific background and\n\nincentivizes long-term engagement with a myriad of collaborative or\n\ncompetitive reward structures. The framework allows for the continual\n\ncoevolution of the players and the game to each other: as players gain\n\nexpertise through gameplay, the game changes to become a better tool.\n\n\n\nThe framework is validated by being applied to proteomics problems with the\n\nvideo game Foldit. Foldit players have contributed to novel discoveries in\n\nprotein structure prediction, protein design, and protein structure\n\nrefinement algorithms. The coevolution of human problem solving and computer\n\ntools in an incentivized game framework is an exciting new scientific\n\npathway that can lead to discoveries currently unreachable by other methods.",

                "name": "Trust Extension as a Mechanism for Secure Code Execution on Commodity Computers",
                "subtitle": "",
                "description": "As society rushes to digitize sensitive information and services, it is imperative to adopt adequate security protections. However, such protections fundamentally conflict with the benefits we expect from commodity computers. In other words, consumers and businesses value commodity computers because they provide good performance and an abundance of features at relatively low costs. Meanwhile, attempts to build secure systems from the ground up typically abandon such goals, and hence are seldom\n\nadopted.\n\n\n\nIn this book, I argue that we can resolve the tension between security and features by leveraging the trust a user has in one device to enable her to securely use another commodity device or service, without sacrificing the performance and features expected of commodity systems. At a high level, we support this premise by developing techniques to allow a user to employ a small, trusted, portable device to securely learn what code is executing on her local computer. Rather than entrusting her data to the mountain of buggy code likely running on her computer, we construct an on-demand secure execution environment which can perform security-sensitive tasks and handle private data in complete isolation from all other software (and most hardware) on the system. Meanwhile, non-security-sensitive software retains the same abundance of features and performance it enjoys today.\n\n\n\nHaving established an environment for secure code execution on an individual computer, we then show how to extend trust in this environment to network elements in a secure and efficient manner. This allows us to reexamine the design of network protocols and defenses, since we can now execute code on endhosts and trust the results within the network. Lastly, we extend the user's trust one more step to encompass computations performed on a remote host (e.g., in the cloud). We design, analyze, and prove secure a protocol that allows a user to outsource arbitrary computations to commodity computers run by an untrusted remote party (or parties) who may subject the computers to both software and hardware attacks. Our protocol guarantees that the user can both verify that the results returned are indeed the correct results of the specified computations on the inputs provided, and protect the secrecy of both the inputs and outputs of the computations. These guarantees are provided in a non-interactive, asymptotically optimal (with respect to CPU and bandwidth) manner.\n\n\n\nThus, extending a user's trust, via software, hardware, and cryptographic techniques, allows us to provide strong security protections for both local and remote computations on sensitive data, while still preserving the performance and features of commodity computers.",

                "name": "Embracing Interference in Wireless Systems",
                "subtitle": "",
                "description": "The wireless medium is a shared resource. If nearby devices transmit at the\n\nsame time, their signals interfere, resulting in a collision. In traditional\n\nnetworks, collisions cause the loss of the transmitted information. For this\n\nreason, wireless networks have been designed with the assumption that\n\ninterference is intrinsically harmful and must be avoided.\n\n\n\nThis book, a revised version of the author's award-winning Ph.D.\n\ndissertation, takes an alternate approach: Instead of viewing interference\n\nas an inherently counterproductive phenomenon that should to be avoided, we\n\ndesign practical systems that transform interference into a harmless, and\n\neven a beneficial phenomenon. To achieve this goal, we consider how wireless\n\nsignals interact when they interfere, and use this understanding in our\n\nsystem designs. Specifically, when interference occurs, the signals get\n\nmixed on the wireless medium. By understanding the parameters of this\n\nmixing, we can invert the mixing and decode the interfered packets; thus,\n\nmaking interference harmless. Furthermore, we can control this mixing\n\nprocess to create strategic interference that allow decodability at a\n\nparticular receiver of interest, but prevent decodability at unintended\n\nreceivers and adversaries. Hence, we can transform interference into a\n\nbeneficial phenomenon that provides security.\n\n\n\nBuilding on this approach, we make four main contributions: We present the\n\nfirst WiFi receiver that can successfully reconstruct the transmitted\n\ninformation in the presence of packet collisions. Next, we introduce a WiFi\n\nreceiver design that can decode in the presence of high-power\n\ncross-technology interference from devices like baby monitors, cordless\n\nphones, microwave ovens, or even unknown technologies. We then show how we\n\ncan harness interference to improve security. In particular, we develop the\n\nfirst system that secures an insecure medical implant without any\n\nmodification to the implant itself. Finally, we present a solution that\n\nestablishes secure connections between any two WiFi devices, without having\n\nusers enter passwords or use pre-shared secret keys.",
