                "name": "An Introduction to Acoustics",
                "subtitle": "",
                "description": "No branch of classical physics is older in its origins yet more modern in its applications than acoustics. Courses on acoustics very naturally begin with a study of vibrations, as a preliminary to the introduction of the wave equations. Both vibrations and waves, of course, are vastly important to all branches of physics and engineering. But it is very helpful to students to gain an understanding of mechanical waves before trying to comprehend the more subtle and abstract electromagnetic ones.This undergraduate-level text opens with an overview of fundamental particle vibration theory, and it proceeds to examinations of waves in air and in three dimensions, interference patterns and diffraction, and acoustic impedance, as illustrated in the behavior of horns. Subsequent topics include longitudinal waves in different gases and waves in liquids and solids; stationary waves and vibrating sources, as demonstrated by musical instruments; reflection and absorption of sound waves; speech and hearing; sound measurements and experimental acoustics; reproduction of sound; and miscellaneous applied acoustics. Supplementary sections include four appendixes and answers to problems. Introduction. Appendixes. List of Symbols. References. Index. Answers to Problems.",

                "name": "Brownian Movement and Molecular Reality",
                "subtitle": "",
                "description": "How do we know that molecules really exist? An important clue came from Brownian movement, a concept developed in 1827 by botanist Robert Brown, who noticed that tiny objects like pollen grains shook and moved erratically when viewed under a microscope. Nearly 80 years later, in 1905, Albert Einstein explained this \"Brownian motion\" as the result of bombardment by molecules. Einstein offered a quantitative explanation by mathematically estimating the average distance covered by the particles over time as a result of molecular bombardment. Four years later, Jean Baptiste Perrin wrote Brownian Movement and Molecular Reality, a work that explains his painstaking measurements of the displacements of particles of a resin suspended in water experiments that yielded average displacements in excellent accord with Einstein's theoretical prediction.The studies of Einstein and Perrin provided some of the first concrete evidence for the existence of molecules. Perrin, whose name is familiar to all who employ his methods for calculations in molecular dynamics, received the 1926 Nobel Prize in physics. In this classic paper, he introduced the concept of Avogadro's number, along with other groundbreaking work. Originally published in the French journal Annates de chimie et de physique, it was translated into English by Frederick Soddy to enduring influence and acclaim.",

                "description": "In addition to being among the twentieth centurys major scientific figures, Sir James Jeans (18771946) was also one of the greatest modern science expositors. His classic introduction to mechanics endures as a clear and concise presentation of first principles.Although brief, it encompasses a remarkably wide selection of topics. Its subjects include rest and motion, force and the laws of motion, forces acting on a single particle, statics of systems of particles, statics of rigid bodies, center of gravity, work, motion of a particle under constant forces, motion of systems of particles, motion of a particle under a variable force, motion of rigid bodies, and generalized coordinates. Within each chapter, the author carefully explains the most elementary concepts (such as velocity, acceleration, Newtons laws, friction, moments, and kinetic energy), and he illustrates them with examples.Ideal for beginning physics students or for more advanced readers in need of refreshment, the text emphasizes the fundamental physical principles rather than mathematics or applications. So clearly written that it can be read and understood outside the classroom, it features hundreds of fully worked illustrative examples and test exercises.",

To get there, he has to walk on a shimmering moon-beam a rather daunting experience at first, but made easier with the help of the Moon-Angel. Once there, he meets the Man-in-the-Moon, discovers a magical garden, battles a terrible giant, and brings lost treasures back to Earth.Well known for his stories of King Arthur and Robin Hood, Howard Pyle transports young readers to a different time and place in this beautifully told tale. It's an unforgettable faraway world where children play and no one ever cries. The book, says author Elizabeth Nesbitt, \"makes Pyle a peer of the classic writers in the field of fantasy.\"",

                "description": "The most important work ever produced in the field of physiological optics, this classic is a model of scientific method and logical procedure, and it remains unmatched in its thorough and accessible approach.This is the third in a three-volume republication of the definitive English translation of Handbuch der Physiologischen Optik, originally published by The Optical Society of America in 1924 and containing everything that was known about physiological optics up until that time. The substratum consists of the data that Helmholtz furnished in the two nineteenth-century German editions that appeared during his lifetime. These volumes also contain extensive supplementary matter that Nagel, Gullstrand, and Kries incorporated in the third German edition of 1911, as well as significant new material prepared for the 1924 English translation by C. Ladd-Franklin, Gullstrand, and Kries, with copious annotations by James P. C. Southall that brought the work up to date with current research.Volumes I and II discuss the dioptrics of the eye and the sensations of vision;Volume III examines the perceptions of vision. Its topics include eye movements; the monocular field of vision; direction of vision; perception of depth; binocular vision; and many other highly important topics. Appendixes cover later findings on spatial configuration in vision and the theory of binocular instruments. Indexes for all three volumes are organized by subject and author.",

Although the composer wrote both works to launch his career as a concert artist, he soon abandoned the concert hall for the more intimate atmosphere of the salon and turned his creative attentions to the brilliant shorter works on which his reputation rests today. The concerti remain among the composer's few ventures in longer and more comprehensive musical forms.Extended stretches of brilliant passagework and many moments of exquisite loveliness have made both works favorites with music lovers. Now pianists can explore their beauty and expressiveness with this practical playing and study edition. It contains the original solo piano parts of the concerti as well as a skillful piano reduction of the original orchestral parts. This means a pianist can play the solo part while the second piano functions as the \"orchestra.\" Clearly printed and sturdily bound in this high-quality volume, these scores are an effective, practical way for students to learn, practice, and rehearse these masterworks of the piano repertoire.",

The dazzling result was The Firebird, a work which brought overnight success to its creator and distinguished him as the most gifted of the younger generation of Russian composers. Based on Russian fairy tales, the piece, according to Grove's Dictionary of Music and Musicians, has \"all the coloring of a Russian child's picture book...brilliant orchestration, glowing color...an extraordinary evocative power which literally enchants the listener.\"Today, The Firebird is as popular and enthusiastically received as it was following its triumphant premiere in Paris more than a century ago. Greatly admired for its orchestrations and harmony, the composition is widely studied by practicing musicians and music students.Now the complete score of this modern masterpiece is available in this handsome, authoritative, and inexpensive edition, which includes a list of instruments and English translations of the stage directions.",

The depth and power that characterize his music are in ample evidence in this volume of all 63 of Rameau's works for keyboard, published between 1706 and 1741, including such well-known pieces as \"Musette en Rondeau,\" \"Tambourin,\" \"Les Niais de Sologne,\" \"Les Cyclopes,\" and \"La Poule.\" The music is reproduced here from the important and well-produced edition of Rameau's keyboard works edited by Camille Saint-Saens. Now today's musicians can enjoy Rameau's complete oeuvre for solo keyboard in this inexpensive high-quality edition.",

The undiminished popularity of his etudes with pianists and audiences alike have made them among the most performed and recorded works for solo piano in the romantic repertoire.This superbly produced yet inexpensive two-volume edition presents all of Liszt's etudes as edited by the great pianist, composer, and musical scholar Ferruccio Busoni for the Franz Liszt Society and published by Breitkopf and Hartel in Leipzig in 191011.This second volume, Series II, includes many of Liszt's most important piano works. Liszt's creative method can be observed in his reworking of the Etudes d' Execution Transcendante d'apres Paganini into the Grande Etudes de Paganini (better known as simply the Paganini Etudes), and the similar revision of the \"Morceau de Salon\" into \"Ab Irato.\" The separate etudes cover a wide stylistic range, from the dazzling technical display of the most popular of the Paganini Etudes, \"La Campanella,\" to the graceful, restrained lyricism of \"Waldesrauschen.\" Each will bring to pianists and their listeners a moving encounter with the genius of this towering musical personality.",

                "description": "Liszt's reputation as perhaps the greatest pianist of all time is powerfully supported by his dazzling body of work for solo piano. The undiminished popularity of his etudes with pianists and audiences alike have made them among the most performed and recorded works for solo piano in the romantic repertoire.This superbly produced yet inexpensive two-volume edition presents all of Liszt's etudes as edited by the great pianist, composer, and musical scholar Ferruccio Busoni for the Franz Liszt Society and published by Breitkopf and Hartel in Leipzig in 191011.This first volume, Series I, includes many of Liszt's most inspired piano works. The Etude en 12 Exercises and the 12 Grandes Etudes can both be regarded as early versions of the Etudes d' Execution Transcendante (Transcendental Etudes). Each set is a highly successful work in its own terms, and both generally surpass the famous final version in difficulty. The separate \"Mazeppa\" is yet another working of one of the etudes from these sets. The individual etudes range dramatically in style from the delicate refinement of \"Feux Follets\" to the startling bravura of \"Wilde Jagd\" (both from the Transcendental Etudes). Each will bring to pianists and their listeners a moving encounter with the genius of this towering musical personality.",
