                "name": "The Story of Law",
                "subtitle": "",
                "description": "<p>Written for the layman as well as the attorney, The Story of Law is the only complete outline history of the law ever published. It is, too, noted journalist William Allen White of the original edition, the sort of book that any lawyer could take home and give to his children in their teens and twenties as a justification of his career. Moreover, The Story of Law has well been termed the perfect book for introducing the beginning law student to the origin and history of the law. John M. Zane lucidly describes the growth and improvement of the law over thousands of years, and he points out that an increasing awareness of the individual as a person who is responsible for decision and action gradually transformed the law. The seventeen chapters include The Physical Basis of Law, Law Among Primordial Men, Babylonian Law, The Jewish Law, Law Among the Greeks, The Roman Creation of Modern Law, Medieval Law in Europe, The Origins of English Law, and International Law. Professor Charles J. Reid, Jr., of Emory University School of Law, has contributed an unsurpassed forty-page Selected Bibliography on Legal History that will be of enormous interest to academics, students, practicing attorneys, and general readers alike.</p> <p>John M. Zane (18631937) was a distinguished attorney.</p> <p>Charles J. Reid, Jr. is Professor at the School of Law, University of Saint Thomas.</p> Please note: This title is available as an ebook for purchase on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and iTunes.",

                "name": "Characteristicks of Men, Manners, Opinions, Times",
                "subtitle": "Three-Volume Slipcased Set, with Illustrations",
                "description": "This new Liberty Fund edition of Characteristicks presents the complete 1732 text of this classic work of philosophy and political theory. Also included are faithful reproductions of the stirring engravings that Shaftesbury created to facilitate the reader's consideration of his meditations on the interrelationships among truth, goodness, beauty, virtue, liberty, responsibility, society, and the state. \nClick here to view a sample art card.\nThe grandson of a founder and leader of the English Whigs, and tutored by John Locke, Anthony Ashley Cooper, the Third Earl of Shaftesbury (16711713), wrote one of the most intellectually influential works in English of the eighteenth century. This was the three-volume Characteristicks, originally published in 1711, but revised in 1714 to accommodate the engravings of illustrations that Shaftesbury himself executed to aid the reader's consideration of his reflections on virtue as a kind of rationally achieved harmony among the affections.\nWidely regarded as the first exponent of the view that ethics derives, not from reason alone, but from \"sentiment,\" Shaftesbury criticizes not only Locke but, especially, Hobbes for the dim view that \"the state of nature\" is \"a war of all against all.\" To the contrary, Shaftesbury argued that human nature responds most fully to representations of the good, the true, and the beautiful, and that human beings naturally desire society. In all of these reflections, he provides a large scope for the exercise of individual liberty and responsibility.\nDouglas Den Uyl has for many years been a Professor of Philosophy at Bellarmine College, Louisville, and is Vice President of Educational Programs for Liberty Fund, Inc.",

This edition will be a welcome addition to scholars of American and French history as the volume contains many writings that have never before been published.</p> <p>Morris served as Deputy Superintendent of Finance during the American Revolution, in which capacity he devised the system of decimal coinage. As a private citizen in Paris, and later Minister to France (178994), Morris was a firsthand witness of the French Revolution. On his return to the U.S., he served as a U.S. Senator, was a prime mover in the creation of the Erie Canal, and took a leading role as a critic of the Jefferson and Madison administrations. As with the second volume in the series, the articles that compose this book include Misess policy memoranda, essays, and speeches that were found in a formerly secret KGB archive in Moscow. The articles have two primary focuses: First, they reveal Misess thoughts on the monetary, fiscal, and general economic policy problems of the Austro-Hungarian Empire before and during World War I; and second, they focus on his thoughts on the new postwar Austrian Republic after the dismantling of the Habsburg monarchy.</p> <p>An appendix to the volume includes a curriculum vitae that Misess great-grandfather prepared for the Habsburg emperor in 1881 as part of his ennoblement, which gave him and his heirs the hereditary title of Edler von. Also included is a talk that Mises delivered at his private seminar in his office at the Vienna Chamber of Commerce in the spring of 1934 on the topic of the methodology of the social sciences.</p> <p>Ludwig von Mises (18811973) was the leading spokesman of the Austrian school of economics throughout most of the twentieth century.</p> <p>Richard Ebeling is Professor of Economics at Northwood University.</p> Please note: This title is available as an ebook for purchase on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and iTunes.",
