This book argues that these problems are caused by the failure to take account of electoral competition between parties. A research strategy to correct this problem is designed and applied to investigate effects of economic conditions on (individual) voter choices and (aggregate) election outcomes over 42 elections in 15 countries. It shows that economic conditions exert small effects on individual party preferences, which can have large consequences for election outcomes. In countries where responsibility for economic policy is clear, voters vote retrospectively and reward or punish incumbent parties - although in coalition systems smaller government parties often gain at the expense of the largest party when economic conditions deteriorate. Where clarity of responsibility for economic policy is less clear, voters vote more prospectively on the basis of expected party policies.", "author": "Wouter van der Brug, Cees van der EijK, Mark Franklin", "slug": "the-economy-and-the-vote-190837-9780511276453-wouter-van-der-brug-cees-van-der-eijk-mark-franklin", "thumbnail_image": "//redshelf-images.s3-external-1.amazonaws.com/thumbnail/9780511276453.jpg", "default_thumbnail_image": "//redshelf-images.s3-external-1.amazonaws.com/thumbnail/default_book_thumbnail.jpg", "product_type": "book", "product_id": "190837", "product_url": "/app/ecom/book/190837/the-economy-and-the-vote-190837-9780511276453-wouter-van-der-brug-cees-van-der-eijk-mark-franklin", "bisac_codes": [ "POL000000" ], "items_count": null, "identifiers": { "ISBN13": "9780521863742", "EISBN13": "9780511276453" }, "drm": null, "cover_image": null, "default_cover_image": null, "book_type": null }, "relationships": { "lowest_offering": { "data": { "type": "offerings", "id": "00010033303491" } } } }, { "type": "Product", "id": "00010000190836", "attributes": { "name": "An Executive's Guide to Information Technology", "subtitle": "Principles, Business Models, and Terminology", "description": "Assessing the most valuable technology for an organization is becoming a growing challenge for business professionals confronted with an expanding array of options. This 2007 book is an A-Z compendium of technological terms written for the non-technical executive, allowing quick identification of what the term is and why it is significant. This is more than a dictionary - it is a concise review of the most important aspects of information technology from a business perspective: the major advantages, disadvantages and business value propositions of each term are discussed, as well as sources for further reading, and cross-referencing with other terms where applicable. The essential elements of each concept are covered in a succinct manner so the reader can quickly obtain the required knowledge without wading through exhaustive descriptions. How should they be structured in order to maximize value creation? This 2007 book looks at the role of boards in a variety of different countries and contexts, from small and medium-sized enterprises to large corporations. It explores the working style of boards and how they can best achieve their task expectations. Board effectiveness and value creation are shown to be the results of interactions between owners, managers, board members and other actors. Board behaviour is thus seen to be a result of strategizing, norms, board leadership, and the decision-making culture within the boardroom. The history of voting rights in America has been characterized by a gradual expansion of the franchise. American Indians are an important part of that story but have faced a prolonged battle to gain the franchise. One of the most important tools wielded by advocates of minority voting rights has been the Voting Rights Act. This book explains the history and expansion of Indian voting rights, with an emphasis on seventy cases based on the Voting Rights Act and/or the Equal Protection Clause. The authors describe the struggle to obtain Indian citizenship and the basic right to vote, then analyze the cases brought under the Voting Rights Act, including three case studies. The final two chapters assess the political impact of these cases and the role of American Indians in contemporary politics.", "author": "Daniel McCool, Susan M. Olson, Jennifer L. The discussion of saddle-point problems is a highlight of the book and has been elaborated to include many more nonstandard applications. The chapter on applications in elasticity now contains a complete discussion of locking phenomena. The numerical solution of elliptic partial differential equations is an important application of finite elements and the author discusses this subject comprehensively. These equations are treated as variational problems for which the Sobolev spaces are the right framework. Graduate students who do not necessarily have any particular background in differential equations, but require an introduction to finite element methods will find this text invaluable. In this landmark 2007 study - the first significant survey of the archaeology of Britain and Ireland for twenty years - Richard Bradley offers an interpretation of the unique archaeological record of these islands based on a wealth of current and largely unpublished data. Bradley surveys the entire archaeological sequence over a 4,000 year period, from the adoption of agriculture in the Neolithic period to the discovery of Britain and Ireland by travellers from the Mediterranean during the later pre-Roman Iron Age. Significantly, this is the first modern account to treat Britain and Ireland on equal terms, offering a detailed interpretation of the prehistory of both islands.", "author": "Richard Bradley", "slug": "the-prehistory-of-britain-and-ireland-190820-9780511276095-richard-bradley", "thumbnail_image": "//redshelf-images.s3-external-1.amazonaws.com/thumbnail/9780511276095.jpg", "default_thumbnail_image": "//redshelf-images.s3-external-1.amazonaws.com/thumbnail/default_book_thumbnail.jpg", "product_type": "book", "product_id": "190820", "product_url": "/app/ecom/book/190820/the-prehistory-of-britain-and-ireland-190820-9780511276095-richard-bradley", "bisac_codes": [ "SOC003000" ], "items_count": null, "identifiers": { "ISBN13": "9780521848114", "EISBN13": "9780511276095" }, "drm": null, "cover_image": null, "default_cover_image": null, "book_type": null }, "relationships": { "lowest_offering": { "data": { "type": "offerings", "id": "00010033315289" } } } }, { "type": "Product", "id": "00010000190819", "attributes": { "name": "The Global Workplace", "subtitle": "International and Comparative Employment Law - Cases and Materials", "description": "With the forces of globalization as a backdrop, this casebook develops labor and employment law in the context of the national laws of nine countries important to the global economy - the US, Canada, Mexico, UK, Germany, France, China, Japan and India. Across all these different sources of law, this book considers the law of individual employment, collective labor law dealing with unionization as well as the laws against discrimination, the laws protecting privacy and the systems used to resolve labor and employment disputes. The book discusses the concepts behind deliberate human attempts to modify the weather through cloud seeding, as well as inadvertent modification of weather and climate on the regional scale. The natural variability of weather and climate greatly complicates our ability to determine a clear cause-and-effect relationship to human activity. Drawing from the latest work on fallacies as well as some of the standard ideas that have remained relevant since Aristotle, Christopher Tindale investigates central cases of major fallacies in order to understand what has gone wrong and how this has occurred. Dispensing with the approach that simply assigns labels and brief descriptions of fallacies, Tindale provides fuller treatments that recognize the dialectical and rhetorical contexts in which fallacies arise. This volume analyzes major fallacies through accessible, everyday examples.
