It's the \"land of the free and the home of the brave.\" It's responsible for hamburgers and Coca-Cola and color TV. It's the center of the universe, with the greatest athletes, tallest buildings, most famous movie stars, and biggest dreamers.\n\nBut what does a world that contains seven billion people really think about the most talked about - and controversial - nation on earth?\n\nThis is the question that inspired Rene Zografos to spend seven years interviewing people from seven continents to pen the definitive guide to the U.S.A.'s global reputation - ATTRACTIVE UNATTRACTIVE AMERICANS: HOW THE WORLD SEES AMERICA\n\nIn ATTRACTIVE UNATTRACTIVE AMERICANS, Zografos - an award-winning Norwegian-Greek author of eight books and veteran journalist - brings together the voices of thousands of people from around the world to highlight their opinions of Americans and the country they live in. From Mexico-born 'Dog Whisperer' Cesar Millan and a Bangkok-based tailor named Marco, to American girl-obsessed Italian teenagers and Swedish ex-pats living in the U.S.A., Attractive Unattractive Americans is chock-full of hundreds of unexpected insights, opinions, compliments and criticisms about the so-called \"greatest country on earth.\" It's a fascinating, not-to-be-missed exploration of culture, politics, philosophy, and the American Dream the likes of which has never before been seen in one place.\n\nAmong the timely, unusual, and exceptionally entertaining questions ATTRACTIVE UNATTRACTIVE AMERICANS addresses include:\n\n Are Americans liked or disliked when traveling abroad?\n Do people from other countries actually care about what's going on in America?\n Is American music, film, fashion, and food as influential as we think it is?\n How do the great American cities actually stack up against the Hollywood portrayals of them?\n Are Americans attractive?", "author": "René Zografos", "slug": "attractive-unattractive-americans-how-the-world-sees-america-218195-9788293444008-rene-zografos", "thumbnail_image": "//redshelf-images.s3-external-1.amazonaws.com/thumbnail/9788293444008.jpg", "default_thumbnail_image": "//redshelf-images.s3-external-1.amazonaws.com/thumbnail/default_book_thumbnail.jpg", "product_type": "book", "product_id": "218195", "product_url": "/app/ecom/book/218195/attractive-unattractive-americans-how-the-world-sees-america-218195-9788293444008-rene-zografos", "bisac_codes": [ "PHI000000", "TRV000000" ], "items_count": null, "identifiers": { "ISBN13": "9788293444008", "ISBN10": "8293444002", "EISBN13": "9788293444008" }, "drm": null, "cover_image": null, "default_cover_image": null, "book_type": null }, "relationships": { "lowest_offering": { "data": { "type": "offerings", "id": "00010014958781" } } } }, { "type": "Product", "id": "00010000218140", "attributes": { "name": "Global Neorealism", "subtitle": "The Transnational History of a Film Style", "description": "Contributions by Nathaniel Brennan, Luca Caminati, Silvia Carlorosi, Caroline Eades, Saverio Giovacchini, Paula Halperin, Neepa Majumdar, Mariano Mestman, Hamid Naficy, Sada Niang, Masha Salazkina, Sarah Sarzynski, Robert Sklar, and Vito Zagarrio

Intellectual, cultural, and film historians have long considered neorealism the founding block of post-World War II Italian cinema. Neorealism, the traditional story goes, was an Italian film style born in the second postwar period and aimed at recovering the reality of Italy after the sugarcoated moving images of fascism. Lasting from 1945 to the early 1950s, neorealism produced world-renowned masterpieces such as Roberto Rossellini's Roma, citta aperta (Rome, Open City, 1945) and Vittorio De Sica's Ladri di biciclette (Bicycle Thieves, 1947). These films won some of the most prestigious film awards of the immediate postwar period and influenced world cinema.

This collection brings together distinguished film scholars and cultural historians to complicate this nation-based approach to the history of neorealism. The traditional story notwithstanding, the meaning and the origins of the term are problematic. What does neorealism really mean, and how Italian is it? Italian filmmakers were wary of using the term and Rossellini preferred \"realism.\" Many filmmakers confessed to having greatly borrowed from other cinemas, including French, Soviet, and American.

Divided into three sections, Global Neorealism examines the history of this film style from the 1930s to the 1970s using a global and international perspective. The first section examines the origins of neorealism in the international debate about realist esthetics in the 1930s. The second section discusses how this debate about realism was Italianized and coalesced into Italian neorealism and explores how critics and film distributors participated in coining the term. Finally, the third section looks at neorealisms success outside of Italy and examines how film cultures in Latin America, Africa, Asia, and the United States adjusted the style to their national and regional situations.", "author": "Saverio Giovacchini, Robert Sklar", "slug": "global-neorealism-218140-9781617031236", "thumbnail_image": "//redshelf-images.s3-external-1.amazonaws.com/thumbnail/9781617031236.jpg", "default_thumbnail_image": "//redshelf-images.s3-external-1.amazonaws.com/thumbnail/default_book_thumbnail.jpg", "product_type": "book", "product_id": "218140", "product_url": "/app/ecom/book/218140/global-neorealism-218140-9781617031236", "bisac_codes": [ "PER004030", "SOC022000" ], "items_count": null, "identifiers": { "ISBN13": "9781617031229", "ISBN10": "1617031224", "EISBN13": "9781617031236", "EISBN10": "1617031232" }, "drm": null, "cover_image": null, "default_cover_image": null, "book_type": null }, "relationships": { "lowest_offering": { "data": { "type": "offerings", "id": "00010015177552" } } } }, { "type": "Product", "id": "00010000218139", "attributes": { "name": "Count Them One by One", "subtitle": "Black Mississippians Fighting for the Right to Vote", "description": "
Forrest County, Mississippi, became a focal point of the civil rights movement when, in 1961, the United States Justice Department filed a lawsuit against its voting registrar Theron Lynd. Gordon A. Martin, Jr., then a newly-minted lawyer, traveled to Hattiesburg from Washington to help shape the federal case against Lynd. In addition, the book includes contributions from participants of the past ISQM-Tokyo symposia held at Hitachi and from Tonomura's longtime friends, including Michael Berry, Jerome Friedman, Hidetoshi Fukuyama, Joseph Imry, Yoshinori Tokura, Jaw-Shen Tsai, and Anton Zeilinger. The co-editors are Kazuo Fujikawa, Tonomura's longtime friend, and Yoshimasa A Ono who is Tonomura's associate at Hitachi Advanced Research Laboratory and now in the FIRST Tonomura Project.", "author": "Kazuo Fujikawa, Yoshimasa A Ono", "slug": "in-memory-of-akira-tonomura-physicist-and-electron-microscopist-with-dvd-rom-218138-9789814472913", "thumbnail_image": "//redshelf-images.s3-external-1.amazonaws.com/thumbnail/9789814472913.jpg", "default_thumbnail_image": "//redshelf-images.s3-external-1.amazonaws.com/thumbnail/default_book_thumbnail.jpg", "product_type": "book", "product_id": "218138", "product_url": "/app/ecom/book/218138/in-memory-of-akira-tonomura-physicist-and-electron-microscopist-with-dvd-rom-218138-9789814472913", "bisac_codes": [ "TEC021000" ], "items_count": null, "identifiers": { "ISBN13": "9789814472883", "EISBN13": "9789814472913", "EISBN10": "9814472913" }, "drm": null, "cover_image": null, "default_cover_image": null, "book_type": null }, "relationships": { "lowest_offering": { "data": { "type": "offerings", "id": "00010015027040" } } } }, { "type": "Product", "id": "00010000218137", "attributes": { "name": "Can Anything Beat White?", "subtitle": "A Black Family's Letters", "description": "
Ann Petry (1908-1997) achieved prominence during a period in which few black women were published with regularity in America. Her novels Country Place (1947) and The Narrows (1988), along with various short stories and nonfiction, poignantly described the struggles and triumphs of middle-class blacks living in primarily white communities.
Petry's ancestors, the James family, served as inspiration for much of her fiction. This collection of more than four hundred family letters, edited by the daughter of Ann Petry, is an engaging portrait of black family life from the 1890s to the early twentieth century, a period not often documented by African American voices.
Ann Petry's maternal grandfather, Willis Samuel James, was a slave taught by his children to read and write. He believed \"the best place for the negro is as near the white man as he can get.\" He followed that \"truth,\" working as coachman for a Connecticut governor and buying a house in a white neighborhood in Hartford. Willis had sixteen children by three wives. The letters in this collection are from him and his second wife, Anna E. Houston James, and five of Anna's children, of whom novelist Ann Petry's mother, Bertha James Lane, was the oldest.
History is made and remade by the availability of new documents, sources, and interpretations. Can Anything Beat White? contributes a great deal to this process. The figures interviewed range from Erskine Caldwell, Eudora Welty and Tennessee Williams (all from the 1970s), to a virtual Who's Who of southern literature in the second half of the twentieth century. All of these interviews were originally published in the journal in the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s and are collected here for the first time. The South is represented broadly, with writers from eight states; at least four represent the mountain South (Donald Harrington, Bobbie Ann Mason, Robert Morgan, Lee Smith), while another four typify a cosmopolitan South (Reynolds Price, Mary Lee Settle, Elizabeth Spencer, Tennessee Williams). The greatest number of voices, at least eight of the authors, speak for or from the poor white South (Larry Brown, Erskine Caldwell, Harry Crews, Donald Harrington, Bobbie Ann Mason, Robert Morgan, Del Shores, Lee Smith). Though there is only one African American writer, Ernest J. Gaines, another interview (William Styron, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Confessions of Nat Turner) also focuses on a conversation about African American literature.

The interviews are all fascinating. Not only do they reveal the personalities of these southern literary stars, but they also represent a self-conscious community of writers. It is a testament to the quality of The Southern Quarterly that many of these writers, when discussing their most important contemporaries, often refer to other writers whose interviews are also in this collection. The industry faced new challenges, particularly the rise of foreign competition in production and the increase of man-made fibers in the consumer market.

Modernization and efficiency became key elements for cotton planters. The expansion of cotton- growing areas into the Far West after 1945 enabled American growers to compete in the world market. D. Joseph builds upon current research on the anticolonial and nationalist experience in the Caribbean. He explores the impact of global transformation upon the independent experience of St. Lucia and argues that the island's formal decolonization roughly coincided with the period of the rise of global neoliberalism hegemony. Consequently, the concept of limited sovereignty became the defining feature of St. Lucia's understanding of the possibilities of independence. Central to the analysis is the tension between the role of the state as a facilitator of domestic aspirations on one hand and a facilitator of global capital on the other.

Joseph examines six critical phases in the St. Lucian experience. The first is 1940 to 1970, when the early nationalist movement gradually occupied state power within a framework of limited self-government. The second period is 1970 to 1982 during which formal independence was attained and an attempt at socialist-oriented radical nationalism was pursued by the St. Lucia Labor Party. The third distinctive period was the period of neoliberal hegemony, 1982-1990. The fourth period (1990-1997) witnessed a heightened process of neoliberal adjustment in global trade which destroyed the banana industry and transformed the domestic political economy. A later period (1997-2006) involved the SLP's return to political power, resulting in tensions between an earlier radicalism and a new and contradictory accommodation to global neoliberalism. The final period (2006-2010) coincides with the onset of a crisis in global neoliberalism during which a series of domestic conflicts reflected the contradictions of the dominant understanding of sovereignty in narrow, materialist terms at the expense of its wider anti-systematic, progressive, and emancipator connotations.", "author": "Tennyson S.
