As the story begins, the reader is introduced to a young boy of about five, the third of six children, living in poverty. The boy is almost entirely deaf due to neglect of his chronic ear infections. He communicates to his mother and siblings through a combination of signing and monosyllabic words that are often difficult to decipher by his family, and impossible to understand by outsiders. He lives in constant fear of his mothers boyfriend, a violent character who has repeatedly abused the family. As the story opens, the boyfriend has just entered the familys apartment.\n\n \n\nThe young boy sees the boyfriend and quickly retreats to safety within a secret space he has created in the void between two walls of the apartment. While hiding, he feels disturbing vibrations around him and becomes even more alarmed. When he finally emerges from his hiding spot, he discovers that his family has been murdered and he is left alone with their lifeless bodies. Despite the horror all around him, the boy is relieved to see that the boyfriend is gone. He struggles to understand what has happened, all the while terrified of the boyfriends return. Overwhelmed with loss and terror, the child flees the apartment into the rainy night.\n\n \n\nFate intervenes to help the lost, speechless boy in the person of JJ Jefferson, a native Chicagoan whos been living the good life in sunny West Palm. Jefferson has returned to his hometown on an annual pilgrimage back to his roots, focusing on visiting a wild cast of characters from his high school days, which includes a cop, a priest, a disabled jockey, and JJs on again/off again girlfriend.\n\n \n\nJJ is a successful businessman, yet a little eccentric. He prefers to camp out in a shack beneath the Stevenson Expressway when visiting, rather than bunk with friends. He sees this experience as a way to reconnect to his humble yet rough upbringing, and to hone the survival skills he learned in the military. Its beneath this highway off-ramp that JJ stumbles across the bloodstained boy crouching behind a pillar. While definitely not in JJs plan, he becomes the boys reluctant protector.\n\n \n\nJJ assumes the role of overnight guardian until he can deliver the young boy to the authorities. However, by the following morning everything changes, including JJs intentions. The action moves quickly over the next few days as JJs colorful friends are enlisted to help him protect the young boy, all of them unaware of the peril that threatens them by aiding the helpless child.\n\n \n\nTime is of the essence as JJ searches for a way to communicate with the boy and gain his trust so that he can determine who he is and how he came to be covered in blood. To what lengths will JJ and his friends go to protect the boy? Duty and morality clash while the hunt is on for the killer in this modern story of truth and consequence.\n\n \n\n ", "author": "William Claypool", "slug": "the-house-beneath-the-damen-off-ramp-253821-9780986063732-william-claypool", "thumbnail_image": "//redshelf-images.s3-external-1.amazonaws.com/thumbnail/9780986063732.jpg", "default_thumbnail_image": "//redshelf-images.s3-external-1.amazonaws.com/thumbnail/default_book_thumbnail.jpg", "product_type": "book", "product_id": "253821", "product_url": "/app/ecom/book/253821/the-house-beneath-the-damen-off-ramp-253821-9780986063732-william-claypool", "bisac_codes": [ "FIC031000" ], "items_count": null, "identifiers": { "ISBN13": "9780986063732", "ISBN10": "0986063738", "EISBN13": "9780986063732" }, "drm": null, "cover_image": null, "default_cover_image": null, "book_type": null }, "relationships": { "lowest_offering": { "data": { "type": "offerings", "id": "00010015025881" } } } }, { "type": "Product", "id": "00010000253819", "attributes": { "name": "A History of Old English Meter", "subtitle": "", "description": "
In A History of Old English Meter, R. D. Fulk offers a wide-ranging reference on Anglo-Saxon meter. Fulk examines the evidence for chronological and regional variation in the meter of Old English verse, studying such linguistic variables as the treatment of West Germanic parasite vowels, contracted vowels, and short syllables under secondary and tertiary stress, as well as a variety of supposed dialect features. Fulk's study of such variables points the way to a revised understanding of the role of syllable length in the construction of early Germanic meters and furnishes criteria for distinguishing dialectal from poetic features in the language of the major Old English poetic codices. On this basis, it is possible to draw conclusions about the probable dialect origins of much verse, to delineate the characteristics of at least four discrete periods in the development of Old English meter, and with some probability to assign to them many of the longer poems, such as Genesis A, Beowulf, and the works of Cynewulf.

A History of Old English Meter will be of interest to scholars of Anglo-Saxon, historians of the English language, Germanic philologists, and historical linguists.
", "author": "R. The laws were said to have been spoken to William shortly after the Conquest by \"English nobles who were wise men and learned in their law,\" recounting \"the rules of their laws and customs\" for the invading Norman king. The historical spectrum, provided by a discussion of Biblical narratives, Midrashic sources, documents of the Jewish mystics, Hasidic tales, and modern Hebrew works, allows an understanding of the metamorphosis that the female figure has experienced in her literary odyssey.
", "author": "Nehama Aschkenasy", "slug": "eves-journey-253815-9781512800111-nehama-aschkenasy", "thumbnail_image": "//redshelf-images.s3-external-1.amazonaws.com/thumbnail/9781512800111.jpg", "default_thumbnail_image": "//redshelf-images.s3-external-1.amazonaws.com/thumbnail/default_book_thumbnail.jpg", "product_type": "book", "product_id": "253815", "product_url": "/app/ecom/book/253815/eves-journey-253815-9781512800111-nehama-aschkenasy", "bisac_codes": [ "REL040030", "LIT004210" ], "items_count": null, "identifiers": { "ISBN13": "9780812280333", "EISBN13": "9781512800111", "EISBN10": "1512800112" }, "drm": null, "cover_image": null, "default_cover_image": null, "book_type": null }, "relationships": { "lowest_offering": { "data": { "type": "offerings", "id": "00010018362371" } } } }, { "type": "Product", "id": "00010000253814", "attributes": { "name": "Marlowe, Shakespeare, and the Economy of Theatrical Experience", "subtitle": "", "description": "This study explores the structure of psychological, social and political exchanges that were negotiated between audiences and plays in Elizabethan public theatres in a period ostensibly dominated by Shakespeare, but strongly rooted in Marlowe.", "author": "Thomas Cartelli", "slug": "marlowe-shakespeare-and-the-economy-of-theatrical-experience-253814-9781512801569-thomas-cartelli", "thumbnail_image": "//redshelf-images.s3-external-1.amazonaws.com/thumbnail/9781512801569.jpg", "default_thumbnail_image": "//redshelf-images.s3-external-1.amazonaws.com/thumbnail/default_book_thumbnail.jpg", "product_type": "book", "product_id": "253814", "product_url": "/app/ecom/book/253814/marlowe-shakespeare-and-the-economy-of-theatrical-experience-253814-9781512801569-thomas-cartelli", "bisac_codes": [ "LIT015000", "DSG" ], "items_count": null, "identifiers": { "ISBN13": "9780812231021", "EISBN13": "9781512801569", "EISBN10": "1512801569" }, "drm": null, "cover_image": null, "default_cover_image": null, "book_type": null }, "relationships": { "lowest_offering": { "data": { "type": "offerings", "id": "00010018360987" } } } }, { "type": "Product", "id": "00010000253813", "attributes": { "name": "Responding to Human Trafficking", "subtitle": "Sex, Gender, and Culture in the Law", "description": "
Signed into law in 2000, the Trafficking Victims Protection Act (TVPA) defined the crime of human trafficking and brought attention to an issue previously unknown to most Americans. But while human trafficking is widely considered a serious and despicable crime, there has been far less consensus as to how to approach the problemowing in part to a pervasive emphasis on forced prostitution that overshadows repugnant practices in other labor sectors affecting vulnerable populations. Responding to Human Trafficking examines the ways in which cultural perceptions of sexual exploitation and victimhood inform the drafting, interpretation, and implementation of U.S. antitrafficking law, as well as the law's effects on trafficking victims.

Drawing from interviews with social workers and case managers, attorneys, investigators, and government administrators as well as trafficked persons, Alicia W. Peters explores how cultural and symbolic frameworks regarding sex, gender, and victimization were incorporated into the drafting of the TVPA and have been replicated through the interpretation and implementation of the law. Tracing the path of the TVPA over the course of nearly a decade, Responding to Human Trafficking reveals the profound gaps in understanding that pervade implementation as service providers and criminal justice authorities strive to collaborate and perform their duties. Ultimately, this sensitive ethnography sheds light on the complex and wide-ranging effects of the TVPA on the victims it was designed to protect.
", "author": "Alicia W.
