"description": "Statistics, big data, and machine learning for Clojure programmers\n\nAbout This Book\n\n Write code using Clojure to harness the power of your data\n Discover the libraries and frameworks that will help you succeed\n A practical guide to understanding how the Clojure programming language can be used to derive insights from data\n\nWho This Book Is For\n\nThis book is aimed at developers who are already productive in Clojure but who are overwhelmed by the breadth and depth of understanding required to be effective in the field of data science. Whether you're tasked with delivering a specific analytics project or simply suspect that you could be deriving more value from your data, this book will inspire you with the opportunitiesand inform you of the risksthat exist in data of all shapes and sizes.\n\nWhat You Will Learn\n\n Perform hypothesis testing and understand feature selection and statistical significance to interpret your results with confidence\n Implement the core machine learning techniques of regression, classification, clustering and recommendation\n Understand the importance of the value of simple statistics and distributions in exploratory data analysis\n Scale algorithms to web-sized datasets efficiently using distributed programming models on Hadoop and Spark\n Apply suitable analytic approaches for text, graph, and time series data\n Interpret the terminology that you will encounter in technical papers\n Import libraries from other JVM languages such as Java and Scala\n Communicate your findings clearly and convincingly to nontechnical colleagues\n\nIn Detail\n\nThe term data science has been widely used to define this new profession that is expected to interpret vast datasets and translate them to improved decision-making and performance. Clojure is a powerful language that combines the interactivity of a scripting language with the speed of a compiled language. Together with its rich ecosystem of native libraries and an extremely simple and consistent functional approach to data manipulation, which maps closely to mathematical formula, it is an ideal, practical, and flexible language to meet a data scientist's diverse needs.\nTaking you on a journey from simple summary statistics to sophisticated machine learning algorithms, this book shows how the Clojure programming language can be used to derive insights from data. Data scientists often forge a novel path, and you'll see how to make use of Clojure's Java interoperability capabilities to access libraries such as Mahout and Mllib for which Clojure wrappers don't yet exist. Even seasoned Clojure developers will develop a deeper appreciation for their language's flexibility!\nYou'll learn how to apply statistical thinking to your own data and use Clojure to explore, analyze, and visualize it in a technically and statistically robust way. You can also use Incanter for local data processing and ClojureScript to present interactive visualisations and understand how distributed platforms such as Hadoop sand Spark's MapReduce and GraphX's BSP solve the challenges of data analysis at scale, and how to explain algorithms using those programming models.\nAbove all, by following the explanations in this book, you'll learn not just how to be effective using the current state-of-the-art methods in data science, but why such methods work so that you can continue to be productive as the field evolves into the future.\n\nStyle and approach\n\nThis is a practical guide to data science that teaches theory by example through the libraries and frameworks accessible from the Clojure programming language.",

Wind-powered generators are now used worldwide as a reliable source of \"green\" energy. How does wind create power? What is wind? What scientific characteristics make pinwheels, windmills and wind turbines spin? What makes them turn faster and more efficiently? Will we ever see a day when every home is powered by its own wind generator? This new book answers these critical questions and many more in clear, non-technical language. Wind Power provides 20 unique projects for youth that use, adapt and illustrate the power of the wind. Artist Clive Dobson provides a basic scientific understanding of wind power and the ways in which it can be harnessed for vital tasks that require energy. The book encourages young readers to experiment with wind so they can\n experience the properties of moving air on various windmill shapes and discover through trial and error what makes them effective for toys, artwork, kinetic power and even for generating electricity. This ideal beginner's guide to the power of the wind offers: Real-life examples of wind power from history and current everyday uses 20 projects for all ages and skill levels, from a simple two-blade pinwheel to a sophisticated six-sail windmill to a modern turbine with airfoil blades Clear illustrations and photographs that complement the step-by-step construction instructions Hands-on experience that provides a clear understanding of scientific principles Inspiration for beginners to experiment with wind Reflections on the modern use of wind power in building a\n sustainable future The creative challenges in this compact book of projects will inspire future generations to become more self-sufficient.",

"description": "<p>Every human society displays some form of behavior that can be called art, and in most societies other than our own the arts play an integral part in social life. Those who wish to understand art in its broadest sense, as a universal human endowment, need to go beyond modern Western elitist notions that disregard other cultures and ignore the human species four-million-year evolutionary history.<br/><br/>This book offers a new and unprecedentedly comprehensive theory of the evolutionary significance of art. Art, meaning not only visual art, but music, poetic language, dance, and performance, is for the first time regarded from a biobehavioral or ethical viewpoint. It is shown to be a biological necessity in human existence and fundamental characteristic of the human species.<br/><br/>In this provocative study, Ellen Dissanayake examines art along with play and ritual as human behaviors that make special, and proposes that making special is an inherited tendency as intrinsic to the human species as speech and toolmaking. She claims that the arts evolved as means of making socially important activities memorable and pleasurable, and thus have been essential to human survival.<br/><br/>Avoiding simplism and reductionism, this original synthetic approach permits a fresh look at old questions about the origins, nature, purpose, and value of art. It crosses disciplinary boundaries and integrates a number of divers fields: human ethology; evolutionary biology; the psychology and philosophy of art; physical and cultural anthropology; primitive and prehistoric art; Western cultural history; and childrens art. The final chapter, From Tradition to Aestheticism, explores some of the ways in which modern Western society has diverged from other societies--particularly the type of society in which human beings evolved--and considers the effects of the aberrance on our art and our attitudes toward art.<br/><br/>This book is addressed to readers who have a concerned interest in the arts or in human nature and the state of modern society.</p>",

The stories in this volume were selected for their popularity with American readers and their usefulness as texts in classes on Chinese and comparative literature. Presented in two parts, Pacific Walkers first gives imagined voice to anonymous dead individuals, entries in the John Doe network of the Spokane County Medical Examiner's Records. The focus then shifts to named but now-forgotten individuals in a discarded early-1900s photo album purchased in a secondhand store. We encounter figures devoid of history but enduring among us as lockered remains, and figures who come with histories--first names and dates, and faces preserved in photographs--but who no longer belong to anyone.</p>",
