                "subtitle": "",
                "description": "A complete guide for Python programmers to master scientific computing using Python APIs and tools\n\nAbout This Book\n\n* The basics of scientific computing to advanced concepts involving parallel and large scale computation are all covered.\n* Most of the Python APIs and tools used in scientific computing are discussed in detail\n* The concepts are discussed with suitable example programs\n\nWho This Book Is For\n\nIf you are a Python programmer and want to get your hands on scientific computing, this book is for you. The book expects you to have had exposure to various concepts of Python programming.\n\nWhat You Will Learn\n\n* Fundamentals and components of scientific computing\n* Scientific computing data management\n* Performing numerical computing using NumPy and SciPy\n* Concepts and programming for symbolic computing using SymPy\n* Using the plotting library matplotlib for data visualization\n* Data analysis and visualization using Pandas, matplotlib, and IPython\n* Performing parallel and high performance computing\n* Real-life case studies and best practices of scientific computing\n\nIn Detail\n\nIn today's world, along with theoretical and experimental work, scientific computing has become an important part of scientific disciplines. Numerical calculations, simulations and computer modeling in this day and age form the vast majority of both experimental and theoretical papers. In the scientific method, replication and reproducibility are two important contributing factors. A complete and concrete scientific result should be reproducible and replicable. Python is suitable for scientific computing. A large community of users, plenty of help and documentation, a large collection of scientific libraries and environments, great performance, and good support makes Python a great choice for scientific computing.\nAt present Python is among the top choices for developing scientific workflow and the book targets existing Python developers to master this domain using Python. The main things to learn in the book are the concept of scientific workflow, managing scientific workflow data and performing computation on this data using Python.\nThe book discusses NumPy, SciPy, SymPy, matplotlib, Pandas and IPython with several example programs.\n\nStyle and approach\n\nThis book follows a hands-on approach to explain the complex concepts related to scientific computing. It details various APIs using appropriate examples.",

                "description": "Edmund C. Berkeley (1909 1988) was a mathematician, insurance actuary, inventor, publisher, and a founder of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). His book Giant Brains or Machines That Think (1949) was the first explanation of computers for a general readership. His journal Computers and Automation (1951-1973) was the first journal for computer professionals. In the 1950s, Berkeley developed mail-order kits for small, personal computers such as Simple Simon and the Braniac. In an era when computer development was on a scale barely affordable by universities or government agencies, Berkeley took a different approach and sold simple computer kits to average Americans. He believed that digital computers, using mechanized reasoning based on symbolic logic, could help people make more rational decisions. The result of this improved reasoning would be better social conditions and fewer large-scale wars. Although Berkeleys populist notions of computer development in the public interest did not prevail, the events of his life exemplify the human side of ongoing debates concerning the social responsibility of computer professionals.\n\nThis biography of Edmund Berkeley, based on primary sources gathered over 15 years of archival research, provides a lens to understand social and political decisions surrounding early computer development, and the consequences of these decisions in our 21st century lives.",

Were discovering things all the time.'</p>\n\n<p>For ten years, the RV Southern Surveyor represented the vanguard of Australian marine science. On over 100 voyages, this former North Sea fishing trawler with her distinctive blue and white livery carried scientists and technicians across the Southern, Pacific and Indian oceans as well as the waters off northern Australia. She conducted physical, chemical, geological and biological investigations and deployed state-of-the-art instruments to map vast unexplored tracts of the seafloor.</p>\n\n<p>Over the course of a year, prior to her final voyage, Michael Veitch interviewed the Southern Surveyor's former captains and crew, support staff and scientists. The result is a warm, engaging and sometimes dramatic account of their adventures finding sunken WWII shipwrecks and swirling coastal vortexes, 'undiscovering' islands and watching pre-dawn fireworks from undersea volcanoes. But these are also stories of discovery which tell the legacy of scientific innovation and impact that Southern Surveyor left in her wake.</p>",

                "description": "Unified Field Mechanics, the topic of the 9th international symposium honoring noted French mathematical physicist Jean-Pierre Vigier cannot be considered highly speculative as a myopic critic might surmise. The 8th Vigier Symposium proceedings 'The Physics of Reality' should in fact be touted as a companion volume because of its dramatic theoretical Field Mechanics in additional dimensionality. Many still consider the Planck-scale zero-point field stochastic quantum foam as the 'basement of reality'. This could only be considered true under the limitations of the Copenhagen interpretation of quantum theory. As we enter the next regime of Unified Field Mechanics we now know that the energy-dependent Einstein-Minkowski manifold called spacetime has a finite radius beyond which a large-scale multiverse beckons. So far a battery of 14 experiments has been designed to falsify the model. When the 1st is successfully performed, a revolution in Natural Science will occur! This volume strengthens and expands the theoretical and experimental basis for that immanent new age.",

                "description": "Embedded librarianship is not one size fits all, yet many books on the subject treat it in a cold, objective manner that doesnt adequately communicate how becoming an embedded librarian actually works in the real world. Here, Reale shares her own university classroom experiences to offer a step-by-step primer for those contemplating the practice. Demystifying what can sometimes feel intimidating to academic librarians, this down to earth resource\n\n defines what embedded librarianship is, and isnt;\n explains why being in the classroom is so important, and how it creates communities of learning;\n shows how to clarify the role of the librarian in a classroom by being a facilitator of process;\n offers strategies for relationship building, setting goals, and honing a teaching style; and\n discusses embedded librarianship and branding.\n\nReaders will feel confident applying the lessons learned from Reales first-hand account to their own experiences both in and out of the classroom.",

                "description": "This eighth anthology of twelve short stories from Weaver Press reveals again the range and variety, compassion and humour, irony and tragedy with which Zimbabwean writers observe the world around them. Several writers adopt a tongue-in-cheek approach to the subject: Naishe Nyamubaya takes us behind graphic newspaper headlines with a story of goblins, Jonathan Brakarsh turns the world inside out by constantly reversing our expectations, and Lawrence Hoba draws a situation both ecollateral and incompatiblei. It is a characteristic of crime fiction to defy expectation, as Farai Mudzingwa, Bongani Sibanda and Valerie Tagwira do in exploring the ramifications of sudden death. But if we are surprised by some stories, we can only be moved those which draw on the pain and vulnerablity of both the victims and those left behind. Godess Bvukutwa, Isabella Matambanadzo and Donna Kirstein help us to reflect on injustice and loss. Reading this collection of stories, with subjects ranging from tokolosh to tsunami, and from ghosts to goldfish, reminds us that the world is crazier than we think.",

They need to know how to use visual tools, written work, and academic notebooks to make revisions that help to deepen their understanding of the content. Based on the earlier work of Dr. Robert J. Marzano, Revising Knowledge: Classroom Techniques to Help Students Examine Their Deeper Understanding explores explicit techniques for mastering a crucial strategy of instructional practice: teaching students to revise their knowledge. It includes: Explicit steps for implementation Recommendations for monitoring students ability to revise knowledge Adaptations for students who struggle, have special needs, or excel in learning Examples and nonexamples from classroom practice Common mistakes and ways to avoid themThe Essentials for Achieving Rigor series of instructional guides helps educators become highly skilled at implementing, monitoring, and adapting instruction. Put it to practical use immediately, adopting day-to-day examples as models for application in your own classroom.",

For more than half a century, the endearing, witty insights brought to life by Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Linus, and Lucy have caused newspaper readers and television viewers across the globe to laugh, sigh, gasp, and ponder. A Charlie Brown Religion explores one of the most provocative topics Schulz broached in his heartwarming work--religion.<br><br>Based on new archival research and original interviews with Schulz's family, friends, and colleagues, author Stephen J. Lind offers a new spiritual biography of the life and work of the great comic strip artist. In his lifetime, aficionados and detractors both labeled Schulz as a fundamentalist Christian or as an atheist. Yet his deeply personal views on faith have eluded journalists and biographers for decades. Previously unpublished writings from Schulz will move fans as they begin to see the nuances of the humorist's own complex, intense journey toward understanding God and faith.<br><br>\"There are three things that I've learned never to discuss with people,\" Linus says, \"Religion, politics, and the Great Pumpkin.\" Yet with the support of religious communities, Schulz bravely defied convention and dared to express spiritual thought in the \"funny pages,\" a secular, mainstream entertainment medium. This insightful, thorough study of the 17,897 Peanuts newspaper strips, seventy-five animated titles, and global merchandising empire will delight and intrigue as Schulz considers what it means to believe, what it means to doubt, and what it means to share faith with the world.",

                "description": "Winner of the John S. Tuckey 2017 Lifetime Achievement Award for Mark Twain Scholarship from The Center for Mark Twain Studies American novelist E.L. Doctorow once observed that literature endows places with meaning. Yet, as this wide-ranging new book vividly illustrates, understanding the places that shaped American writers lives and their art can provide deep insight into what makes their literature truly meaningful. Published on the eve of the 50th anniversary of the Historic Preservation Act, Writing America is a unique, passionate, and eclectic series of meditations on literature and history, covering over 150 important National Register historic sites, all pivotal to the stories that make up America, from chapels to battlefields; from plantations to immigration stations; and from theaters to internment camps. The book considers not only the traditional sites for literary tourism, such as Mark Twains sumptuous Connecticut home and the peaceful woods surrounding Walden Pond, but also locations that highlight the diversity of American literature, from the New York tenements that spawned Abraham Cahans fiction to the Texas pump house that irrigated the fields in which the farm workers central to Gloria Anzalduas poetry picked produce. Rather than just providing a cursory overview of these authors achievements, acclaimed literary scholar and cultural historian Shelley Fisher Fishkin offers a deep and personal reflection on how key sites bore witness to the struggles of American writers and inspired their dreams. She probes the global impact of American writers innovative art and also examines the distinctive contributions to American culture by American writers who wrote in languages other than English, including Yiddish, Chinese, and Spanish. Only a scholar with as wide-ranging interests as Shelley Fisher Fishkin would dare to bring together in one book writers as diverse as Gloria Anzaldua, Nicholas Black Elk, David Bradley, Abraham Cahan, S. Alice Callahan, Raymond Chandler, Frank Chin, Elizabeth Cook-Lynn, Countee Cullen, Frederick Douglass, Paul Laurence Dunbar, Jessie Fauset, William Faulkner, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Allen Ginsberg, Jovita Gonzalez, Rolando Hinojosa, Langston Hughes, Zora Neale Hurston, Lawson Fusao Inada, James Weldon Johnson, Erica Jong, Maxine Hong Kingston, Irena Klepfisz, Nella Larsen, Emma Lazarus, Sinclair Lewis, Genny Lim, Claude McKay, Herman Melville, N. Leading readers on an enticing journey across the borders of physical places and imaginative terrains, the book includes over 60 images, and extended excerpts from a variety of literary works. Each chapter ends with resources for further exploration. Writing America reveals the alchemy though which American writers have transformed the world around them into art, changing their world and ours in the process.",

                "subtitle": "",
                "description": "Build real-world computer vision applications and develop cool demos using OpenCV for Python\n\nAbout This Book\n\n* Learn how to apply complex visual effects to images using geometric transformations and image filters\n* Extract features from an image and use them to develop advanced applications\n* Build algorithms to help you understand the image content and perform visual searches\n\nWho This Book Is For\n\nThis book is intended for Python developers who are new to OpenCV and want to develop computer vision applications with OpenCV-Python. This book is also useful for generic software developers who want to deploy computer vision applications on the cloud. It would be helpful to have some familiarity with basic mathematical concepts such as vectors, matrices, and so on.\n\nWhat You Will Learn\n\n* Apply geometric transformations to images, perform image filtering, and convert an image into a cartoon-like image\n* Detect and track various body parts such as the face, nose, eyes, ears, and mouth\n* Stitch multiple images of a scene together to create a panoramic image\n* Make an object disappear from an image\n* Identify different shapes, segment an image, and track an object in a live video\n* Recognize an object in an image and build a visual search engine\n* Reconstruct a 3D map from images\n* Build an augmented reality application\n\nIn Detail\n\nComputer vision is found everywhere in modern technology. OpenCV for Python enables us to run computer vision algorithms in real time. With the advent of powerful machines, we are getting more processing power to work with. Using this technology, we can seamlessly integrate our computer vision applications into the cloud. Web developers can develop complex applications without having to reinvent the wheel.\nThis book will walk you through all the building blocks needed to build amazing computer vision applications with ease. We start off with applying geometric transformations to images. We then discuss affine and projective transformations and see how we can use them to apply cool geometric effects to photos. We will then cover techniques used for object recognition, 3D reconstruction, stereo imaging, and other computer vision applications.\nThis book will also provide clear examples written in Python to build OpenCV applications. The book starts off with simple beginner's level tasks such as basic processing and handling images, image mapping, and detecting images. It also covers popular OpenCV libraries with the help of examples.\nThe book is a practical tutorial that covers various examples at different levels, teaching you about the different functions of OpenCV and their actual implementation.\n\nStyle and approach\n\nThis is a conversational-style book filled with hands-on examples that are really easy to understand. Each topic is explained very clearly and is followed by a programmatic implementation so that the concept is solidified. "subtitle": "",
                "description": "Design scalable and robust RESTful web services with JAX-RS and Jersey extension APIs\n\nAbout This Book\n\n* Get to grips with the portable Java APIs used for JSON processing\n* Design solutions to produce, consume, and visualize RESTful web services using WADL, RAML, and Swagger\n* A step-by-step guide packed with many real-life use-cases to help you build efficient and secure RESTful web APIs in Java\n\nWho This Book Is For\n\nIf you are a web developer with a basic understanding of the REST concepts but are new to the idea of designing and developing RESTful web services, this is the book for you. As all the code samples for the book are written in Java, proficiency in Java is a must.\n\nWhat You Will Learn\n\n* Introduce yourself to the RESTful software architectural style and the REST API design principles\n* Make use of the JSR 353 APIs and Jackson API for JSON processing\n* Build portable RESTful web APIs, making use of the JAX-RS 2.0 API\n* Simplify API development using the Jersey extension APIs\n* Secure your RESTful web services with various authentication and authorization mechanisms\n* Get to grips with the various metadata solutions to describe, produce, and consume RESTful web services\n* Understand the design and coding guidelines to build well-performing RESTful APIs\n* See how the role of RESTful web services changes with emerging technologies and trends\n\nIn Detail\n\nREST (REpresentational State Transfer) is a simple yet powerful software architecture style to create scalable web services and allow them to be simple, lightweight, and fast. The REST API uses HTTP and JSON, so that it can be used with many programming languages such as Ruby, Java, Python, and Scala. Its use in Java seems to be the most popular though, because of the API's reusability.\nThis book is a guide to developing RESTful web services in Java using the popular RESTful framework APIs available today. You will begin with gaining an in-depth knowledge of the RESTful software architectural style and its relevance in modern applications. Further, you will understand the APIs to parse, generate, transform, and query JSON effectively. Then, you will see how to build a simple RESTful service using the popular JAX-RS 2.0 API along with some real-world examples. This book will introduce you to the Jersey framework API, which is used to simplify your web services.\nYou will also see how to secure your services with various authentication mechanisms. You will get to grips with various solutions to describe, produce, consume, and visualize RESTful web services. Finally, you will see how to design your web services to equip them for the future technological advances, be it Cloud or mobile computing.\nBy the end of this book, you will be able to efficiently build robust, scalable, and secure RESTful web services, making use of the JAX-RS and Jersey framework extensions.\n\nStyle and approach\n\nThis book is written as a step-by-step guide to designing and developing robust RESTful web services. Each topic is explained in a simple and easy-to-understand manner with lots of real-life use-cases and their solutions.",
