This book describes how many of the key innovations that made this possible came from entrepreneurs and iconoclasts who were outside the mainstreamand how the commercialization of the Internet was by no means a foregone conclusion at its outset.<br><br>Shane Greenstein traces the evolution of the Internet from government ownership to privatization to the commercial Internet we know today. This is a story of innovation from the edges. Greenstein shows how mainstream service providers that had traditionally been leaders in the old-market economy became threatened by innovations from industry outsiders who saw economic opportunities where others didn'tand how these mainstream firms had no choice but to innovate themselves. New models were tried: some succeeded, some failed. Commercial markets turned innovations into valuable products and services as the Internet evolved in those markets. New business processes had to be created from scratch as a network originally intended for research and military defense had to deal with network interconnectivity, the needs of commercial users, and a host of challenges with implementing innovative new services.<br><br>How the Internet Became Commercial demonstrates how, without any central authority, a unique and vibrant interplay between government and private industry transformed the Internet.</p>",

"description": "<p>Examines how \"Religious Nones\" negotiate tensions with those who think they ought to provide their children with a religious upbringing<br><br>The fastest growing religion in America isnone! One fifth of Americans now list their religion as none, up from only 7 percent two decades ago. Among adults under 30, those poised to be the parents of the next generation, fully one third are religiously unaffiliated. Yet these Nones, especially parents, still face prejudice in a culture where religion is widely seen as good for your kids. What do Nones believe, and how do they negotiate tensions with those convinced that they ought to provide their children with a religious upbringing?<br><br>Drawing on survey data and in-depth personal interviews with religiously unaffiliated parents across the country, Christel Manning provides important demographic data on American Nones and offers critical nuance to our understanding of the term. She shows that context is crucial in understanding how those without religious ties define themselves and raise their families. Indeed, she demonstrates that Nones hold a wide variety of worldviews, ranging from deeply religious to highly secular, and transmit them in diverse ways. What ties them all together is a commitment to spiritual choicea belief in the moral equivalence of religions and secular worldviews and in the individuals right to chooseand it is that choice they seek to pass on to their children.<br><br>The volume weaves in stories from the authors interviews throughout, showing how non-religious parents grapple with pressure from their community and how they think about religious issues. Engagingly written and thoroughly researched, Losing Our Religion will appeal to scholars, parents, and anyone interested in understanding the changing American religious landscape.</p>",

The Bahai community has spread to become the second most geographically widespread religion in the world. It has a 120 year history in the United States, where members have promoted their core belief that all people are created equal.<br><br>American Bahais have been remarkably successful in attracting a diverse membership. They instituted efforts to promote racial unity in the deep South decades before the modern civil rights movement, and despite lip service to fostering multi racial congregations among Christian churches, over half of American Bahai congregations today are multiracial, in comparison to just 5 to 7 percent of U.S. Christian churches. This level of diversity is unique among all religious groups in the United States.<br><br>As the story of a relatively new religious movement, the history of the Bahais in America in the 20th and early 21st centuries offers a case study of institutional maturation, showcasing the communitys efforts to weather conflict and achieve steady growth. While much scholarly attention has been paid to extremist religious movements, this book highlights a religious movement that promotes the idea of the unity of all religions. Mike McMullen traces the hard work of the Bahais leadership and congregants to achieve their high level of diversity and manage to grow so successfully in America.</p>",

"description": "<p>Since the 1990s, Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) programs have experienced unprecedented expansion in American public schools. The program and its proliferation in poor, urban schools districts with large numbers of Latina/o and African American students is not without controversy. Public support is often based on the belief that the program provides much-needed discipline for \"at risk\" youth. Meanwhile, critics of JROTC argue that the program is a recruiting tool for the U.S. military and is yet another example of an increasingly punitive climate that disproportionately affect youth of color in American public schools. <br><br>Citizen, Student, Soldier intervenes in these debates, providing critical ethnographic attention to understanding the motivations, aspirations, and experiences of students who participate in increasing numbers in JROTC programs. These students have complex reasons for their participation, reasons that challenge the reductive idea that they are either dangerous youths who need discipline or victims being exploited by a predatory program. Rather, their participation is informed by their marginal economic position in the local political economy, as well as their desire to be regarded as full citizens, both locally and nationally. Citizenship is one of the central concerns guiding the JROTC curriculum; this book explores ethnographically how students understand and enact different visions of citizenship and grounds these understandings in local and national political economic contexts. It also highlights the ideological, social and cultural conditions of Latina/o youth and their families who both participate in and are enmeshed in vigorous debates about citizenship, obligation, social opportunity, militarism and, ultimately, the American Dream.</p>",

He takes the reader on a journey through the work of Chaucer and his Canterbury Tales, Cervantes, Jonathan Swift, and Mark Twain, and ending with the mediated entertainment of modern wags like Stephen Colbert. <br><br>Lindvall finds that there is a method to the madness of these mockers: true satire, he argues, is at its heart moral outrage expressed in laughter. But there are remarkable differences in how these religious satirists express their outrage. The changing costumes of religious satirists fit their times. The earthy coarse language of Martin Luther and Sir Thomas More during the carnival spirit of the late medieval period was refined with the enlightened wit of Alexander Pope. The sacrilege of Monty Python does not translate well to the ironic voices of Soren Kierkegaard. The religious satirist does not even need to be part of the community of faith. All he needs is an eye and ear for the folly and chicanery of religious poseurs. <br><br>To follow the paths of the satirist, writes Lindvall, is to encounter the odd and peculiar treasures who are Gods mouthpieces. In God Mocks, he offers an engaging look at their religious use of humor toward moral ends.</p>",

"description": "With just a rudimentary understanding of exposure and composition, one can capture fairly competent images of attractive subjects. But is that image remarkable in any way? Does it really say anything? How does one capture, edit, and share images that stand out from the crowd and express a distinct vision of the world? How do photographers develop and define their own voice?\n<br><br>\nIn The Visual Palette: Defining Your Photographic Style, photographer Brian Matiash outlines and illustrates mindsets, approaches, and techniques that photographers can implement in order to apply their own unique stamp on their photos. Matiash concentrates on the ability to train oneself to see differentlywhether youre behind the camera, editing an image, or sharing your photo with othersand this book explores ways to help photographers do just that. Matiash examines his own path to creativity and personal style and then encourages readers to use that knowledge gained to forge their own paths.\n<br><br>\nWhat sets The Visual Palette apart is that Matiash considers the entire image-making process, including both image capture and post-processing, when discussing how to develop a photographic style and express ones vision. Throughout photographys history, astute photographers always knew there were two crucial opportunities to express oneself: during the capture and in the darkroom. As Ansel Adams said, The negative is comparable to the composer's score and the print to its performance. In that same spirit, The Visual Palette considers both image capture and post-processing as equal partners in the creation of the image and the expression of ones vision. \n<br><br>\nThe book is organized into three sections: composition, post-processing (what Matiash calls Stylization and Editing), and sharing. Each chapter tackles a concept, such as compositional rules (and when to break them), then Matiash shares My Story, with a specific example of that concept in action in his own work. Finally, there is a Your Story segment where, with prompts and exercises, Matiash empowers and motivates the reader to examine their own work or practice a new technique in order to further develop their own photographic style. \n<br><br>\nBeautifully illustrated with Matiashs photographs, the book covers topics that range from fundamental to creative. The ideal reader is a beginning to intermediate photographer, including photography enthusiasts, hobbyists, advanced amateurs, and any and all photographers interested in landscape, nature, urban, and architectural genres of photography.",

Perhaps that's why Harry takes to sex for a living, turning a trick as a gay escort, the eponymous Young Lad on Old Street. It's a murky business in the course of which Harry meets Frank, a dubious entrepreneur from London's seedier side. Frank draws Harry into a world where he's swindling his best friend's widow, whose interests the naive Arthur is seeking to defend, and where they attract the attention of psychotic gangsters. Everyone's after a buck and Frank's after Harry too, but Harry is star-struck by the unfortunate Arthur. All this while everything's cratering at home. Can Harry come out unscathed?",

From The Black Beaches to Radiant Pleats, Mulgoa, from High Speed Trap Space to The Electric, 1960, this is verse that renews and transforms our sense of the world.\n\nShortlisted, 2015 TS Eliot Poetry Prize\n\n'No poet has ever travelled like this, whether in reality or simply in mind ... Seeing the shape or hearing the sound of one thing in another, he finds forms' Clive James, the Monthly\n\nA profuse talent for image making and a capacity to fold syntax, sense, and sound into extraordinary verbal forms ... [Murray] is able to submit his consciousness to alien states and beings, inhabit them, and bring forth poems of startling originality in extraordinary language. Australian Book Review\n\nMurrays best poems are distinguished by the fact that reading them feels solitary: an encounter not with a personality but with language itself: its work of discovering the world through its patterns of sound. Sydney Review of Books\n\nThis is Murray the revelator, master of the hidden away; his spade turns up so much truth its as though he were mining great seams of it, which of course he is, even when as here he is bottoming out on the bedrock of reticence deep in the bucolic soul ... Murray is the great mining baron of Australian literature brash but also breathtakingly brilliant and often both at once who, having strode like a colossus for decades over a vast empire of open-pits, has in his dotage turned leaf-whistling prospector, content with a glint in the pan. Weekend Australian\n\nLes Murray's new book, Waiting for the Past, is not one that his numerous admirers will want to pass up ... it's a vintage collection. Sydney Morning Herald\n\nNo one writes like Murray: so truthful, nakedly emotional, wry, watchful. Hes set deep in the Australian landscape, writing about back roads, vertigo, sliced bread, old typewriters and the persistence of love. Murray is the holy fool of his own poems, and a hero of poetry. Guardian, Best Books of 2015\n\nLes Murray lives in Bunyah, near Taree in New South Wales. He has published some thirty books. His work is studied in schools and universities around Australia and has been translated into several foreign languages.",

This whole configuration requires not only expertise, but also a fair amount of time as well. Time that could have been spent on actual application functionality.\nGoogle App Engine allows you develop highly scalable web applications or backends for mobile applications without worrying about the system administration plumbing or hardware provisioning issues. Just focus writing on your business logic, the meat of the application, and let Google's powerful infrastructure scale it to thousands of requests per second and millions of users without any effort on your part.\nThis book takes you from explaining how scalable applications work to designing and developing robust scalable web applications of your own, utilizing services available on Google App Engine.\nStarting with a walkthrough of scalability is and how scalable web applications work, this book introduces you to the environment under which your applications exist on Google App Engine. Next, you will learn about Google's datastore, which is a massively scalable distributed NoSQL solution built on top of BigTable. You will examine the BigTable concepts and operations in detail and reveal how it is used to build Google datastore. Armed with this knowledge, you will then advance towards how to best model your data and query that along with transactions. To augment the powerful distributed dataset, you will deep dive into search functionality offered on Google App Engine. With the search and storage sorted out, you will get a look into performing long running tasks in the background using Google App Engine task queues along with sending and receiving emails. You will also examine the memcache to boost web application performance, image processing for common image manipulation tasks. You will then explore uploading, storing, and serving large files using Blobstore and Cloud storage.\nFinally, you will be presented with the deployment and monitoring of your applications in production along with a detailed look at dividing applications into different working modules.\n\nStyle and approach\n\nThis book is an in-depth guide where you will examine the problems in the context of highly scalable web applications. This book will take you through the libraries, services, and required configuration and finally puts everything together into a small web application that showcases all the capabilities of Google App Engine.",
