                "subtitle": "An Odyssey",
                "description": "In this essay of extraordinary scope and depth, Eric McLuhan explores faith as a form of knowing. He does so against the backdrop of preliterate mans concrete, bodily submersion in the putting on of poetry and drama (the practice of mimesis) and post-literate mans bodiless submersion in electronic communication, in which sender and receiver are everywhere and nowhere at once. In traversing the Aristotelian and Medieval concept of sensus communis, he examines synesthesia as, in effect, its operating system and charts the modern and contemporary mandate to embrace the discarnate. He washes up on the shore of religion as he uncovers a trinity of knowledge, that is, three kinds of sensus communis the five physical senses, the four intellectual senses of Scripture (historical, allegorical, tropological, and anagogical), and the three theological senses (faith, hope, and charity)each of the three complete in itself yet interacting with one another. A fascinating odyssey that will dazzle the senses.",

What he discovers convinces him that the deaths of the defense contractor and the engineer are both related to the project and that someone within the company is working with terrorists to seize control of the drone during a live fire test in Afghanistan. With no hard evidence to support his theory, he is unable to persuade either the company or the Navy that an imminent threat exists. Concerned he will disrupt the test, the company terminates his contract and notifies the police.\n\nPursued by the police and headed for an engagement with a large, well-armed terrorist cell led by the company insider, Palmer is close to defeat when he receives help from the most unlikely person. With only hours to spare, they race to stop an attack half a world away. The Drone Enigma will keep you on the edge of your seat and make you question every news story about drones.",

                "description": "<p>What we today call Shinto has been at the heart of Japanese culture for almost as long as there has been a political entity distinguishing itself as Japan. A Year in the Life of a Shinto Shrine describes the ritual cycle at Suwa Shrine, Nagasakis major Shinto shrine. Conversations with priests, other shrine personnel, and people attending shrine functions supplement John K. Nelsons observations of over fifty shrine rituals and festivals. He elicits their views on the meaning and personal relevance of the religious events and the place of Shinto and Suwa Shrine in Japanese society, culture, and politics. Nelson focuses on the very human side of an ancient institution and provides a detailed look at beliefs and practices that, although grounded in natural cycles, are nonetheless meaningful in late-twentieth-century Japanese society.<br/><br/>Nelson explains the history of Suwa Shrine, basic Shinto concepts, and the Shinto worldview, including a discussion of the Kami, supernatural forces that pervade the universe. He explores the meaning of ritual in Japanese culture and society and examines the symbols, gestures, dances, and meanings of a typical shrine ceremony. He then describes the cycle of activities at the shrine during a calendar year: the seasonal rituals and festivals and the petitionary, propitiary, and rite-of-passage ceremonies performed for individuals and specific groups. Among them are the Dolls Day festival, in which young women participate in a procession and worship service wearing Heian period costumes; the autumn Okunchi festival, which attracts participants from all over Japan and even brings emigrants home for a visit; the ritual invoking the blessing of the Kami for young children; and the ritual sanctifying the earth before a building is constructed. The author also describes the many roles women play in Shinto and includes an interview with a female priest.<br/><br/>Shinto has always been attentive to the protection of communities from unpredictable human and divine forces and has imbued its ritual practices with techniques and strategies to aid human life. By observing the Nagasaki shrines traditions and rituals, the people who make it work, and their interactions with the community at large, the author shows that cosmologies from the past are still very much a part of the cultural codes utilized by the nation and its people to meet the challenges of today.</p>",

                "description": "<p>Generations of tourists visiting Rome have ventured into the small section between the Tiber River and the Capitoline Hill whose narrow, dark streets lead to the charming Fountain of the Tortoises, the brooding mass of the Palazzo Cenci, and some of the best restaurants in the city. This was the site of the Ghetto, within whose walls the Jews of Rome were compelled to live from 1555 until 1870. Kenneth Stow, leading authority on Italian Jews, probes Jewish life in Rome in the early years of the Ghetto.<br/><br/>Jews had been residents of Rome since before the days of Julius Caesar, but the 16th century brought great challenges to their identity and survival in the form of Ghettoization. Intended to expedite conversion and cultural dissolution, the Ghetto in fact had an opposite effect. The Jews of Rome developed a subculture, or microculture, that ensured continuity. In particular, they developed a remarkably effective legal network of rabbinic notaries, who drew public documents such as contracts, took testimony, and arranged for disputes to go to arbitration. The ability to settle disputes relating to marriage, divorce, inheritance, and other internal matters gave Jews the illusion that they, rather than the papal vicar, were running their own affairs.<br/><br/>Stow applies his concept of social theater to illuminate the role-playing that Jews adopted as a means of survival within the dominant Christian environment. He also touches briefly on Jewish culture in post-Emancipation Rome, elsewhere in Europe, and in America, and points the way toward a comparison with the acculturational strategies of other minorities, especially African Americans.</p>",

                "description": "<p>To Ellen Dissanayake, the arts are biologically evolved propensities of human nature: their fundamental features helped early humans adapt to their environment and reproduce themselves successfully over generations. In Art and Intimacy she argues for the joint evolutionary origin of art and intimacy, what we commonly call love.<br/><br/>It all begins with the human trait of birthing immature and helpless infants. To ensure that mothers find their demanding babies worth caring for, humans evolved to be lovable and to attune themselves to others from the moment of birth. The ways in which mother and infant respond to each other are rhythmically patterned vocalizations and exaggerated face and body movements that Dissanayake calls rhythms and sensory modes.<br/><br/>Rhythms and modes also give rise to the arts. Because humans are born predisposed to respond to and use rhythmic-modal signals, societies everywhere have elaborated them further as music, mime, dance, and display, in rituals which instill and reinforce valued cultural beliefs. Just as rhythms and modes coordinate and unify the mother-infant pair, in ceremonies they coordinate and unify members of a group.<br/><br/>Today we humans live in environments very different from those of our ancestors. They used ceremonies (the arts) to address matters of serious concern, such as health, prosperity, and fecundity, that affected their survival. Now we tend to dismiss the arts, to see them as superfluous, only for an elite. But if we are biologically predisposed to participate in artlike behavior, then we actually need the arts. Even -- or perhaps especially -- in our fast-paced, sophisticated modern lives, the arts encourage us to show that we care about important things.</p>",

                "subtitle": "Facts that Father Never Told You",
                "description": "When Donald Trump boasts of his billions while claiming to be a good Christian, hes not thinking of Jesus. Jesus damned the rich: it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter heaven. Jesus told the rich man to sell all his possessions and give the money to the poor. Trump and his evangelical followers confuse Jesus with Paul, who invented the gospel of prosperity, telling his flock that if they gave to his collection, God would enrich them both financially and spiritually. Pauls resurrected Christ often contradicted the teachings of Jesus. Like Trump and his followers, Christianity has opted for Pauls teachings, and he is revered almost as much as his resurrected Christ.\n\nNew Testament scholars are people of faithblind faith. We include a case study of one of the worlds most famous scholars, who touts his lofty principles. Yet on Pauls behalf, he repeatedly sacrifices both his principles and his reason. For example, he asserts that Paul was always an observant Jew. But Paul ate pork from swine sacrificed to pagan gods, and called the Bible a curse that was worth dung. Paul violated the most fundamental tenets of Judaism, not to mention the Apostolic Decree. Yet this scholar is far less faith-based than his colleagues.\n\nWhen facts conflict with faith, professional Christians either convert them or consign them to purgatory. For example, Paul repeatedly complained of his poverty. But when he reached Rome, he purchased housing that only the elite could afford. This fact is beyond dispute, so it is suppressed. Paul said he slaved night and day to support himself. But artisans like Paul earned a subsistence wage, and could not possibly have earned enough to pay for Pauls costly mission. This basic fact of economic life is almost always suppressed. Some well-known scholars, like Bruce Chilton, even assert that tent-makers like Paul got rich from their labors. Furthermore, while Paul told his church in Thessalonica that he slaved to make ends meet, he thanked his church in Philippi for repeatedly sending him money in Thessalonica. Somehow, these scholars manage to ignore this incriminating evidence. Similarly, in his first letter to the Corinthians, Paul claimed to support himself. But in his second letter to the Corinthians, he was forced to admit he stole money from his church in Philippi. Again, these scholars ignore it. They even assert Paul would never dissemble, and that his claims must always be accepted.\n\nIn the ancient world, writing letters was very expensive, and even businessmen earning far more than Paul could not afford it. Thats probably why Luke never mentioned Pauls letters, and why, for almost two thousand years, scholars avoided the subject. But over a decade ago, E. Randolph Richards devoted a chapter of his book to the cost of Pauls letters. Faced with a series of unpleasant facts, he falsified them, and fraudulently eliminated over 90% of Pauls costs. For example, he transformed secretarial wages from 35 denarii per 100 lines of text, to 25 denarii per 10,000 lines. His colleagues remained silent, and his evangelical publisher refused to issue corrections, much less pull the fraudulent work.\n\nThere are many damaging facts, fully documented, and readily confirmedno divine revelations required. They paint an entirely different portrait of Paul than the photoshopped versions youve seen. Jesus said the truth shall set you free. Professional Christians cant handle the truth. Get the facts.",

Doreen Francis' definition of pain is derived from that proposed by scientists, such as Melzack, Wall and Freud. Pain is a dynamic, multi-layered, diverse collection of experiences, which impacts and influences us throughout life. Pain is a kind of conglomerate of past, traumatic, neurobiological, psychological and emotional imprints--pain as in suffering or being in pain. The author's aim here is to argue that it is not pain, as such, but our relationship with pain, which is most significant to the processes of our lives. In examining the combination of Freud's psychosexual theory of development and Melzack's theory of the neuromatrix, Francis endeavours to evidence her theory that there is the distinct possibility for the existence of what she has named a Psychomatrix--patterns of pain (loss, abandonment, grief, rejection, desire) imprinted from infancy, that are specifically translated by their own 'psychological and emotional neural loops' and therefore, congruent with the neuromatrix concept. She concludes that pain becomes an object that compels us to respond accordingly, thus defining our identity and existence.",

                "name": "The New Klein-Lacan Dialogues",
                "subtitle": "",
                "description": "This book provides a timely exploration and comparison of key concepts in the theories of Melanie Klein and Jacques Lacan, two thinkers and clinicians whose influence over the development of psychoanalysis in the wake of Freud has been profound and far-reaching. Whilst the centrality of the unconscious is a strong conviction shared by both Klein and Lacan, there are also many differences between the two schools of thought and the clinical work that is produced in each. The purpose of this collection is to take seriously these similarities and differences.Deeply relevant to both theoretical reflection and clinical work, the New Klein-Lacan Dialogues should make interesting reading for psychoanalysts, psychotherapists, mental health professionals, scholars and all those who wish to know more about these two leading figures in the field of psychoanalysis.The collection centres around key concepts such as: 'symbolic function', the 'ego', the 'object', the 'body', 'trauma', 'autism', 'affect' and 'history and archives'. The authors are internationally renowned writers and clinicians and include: Eva Bahovec, Lionel Bailly, Rachel Blass, Ronald Britton, Catalina Bronstein, Bernard Burgoyne, Robert Hinshelwood, Roberto Ileyassoff, Marie-Christine Laznik, Elias Mallet da Rocha Barros, Catherine Mathelin-Vanier, Maria Rhode, Elisabeth Roudinesco, Richard Rusbridger, Michael Rustin , Paul Verhaeghe and Marcus Vieria.Re-opening a dialogue first attempted with great success in 1995 (\"The Klein-Lacan Dialogues\", organised by Catalina Bronstein and Bernard Burgoyne), this book is based on a new international seminar series collaboratively organised by colleagues at UCL, Middlesex University, and the Royal College of Art and held in 2011 under the auspices of the UCL Psychoanalysis Unit.",

The book also includes detailed case reports and theoretical discussions on a wide variety of topics including autism, psychosomatics, representation, field theory, psychosis and truth; and essays on Sense, Myth and Passion, the late papers, groups and aesthetics.For both experienced analysts and candidates, for those already familiar with Bion and for neophytes, The Bion Tradition should serve as an essential and up-to-date resource for study, thought and exploration.",

                "description": "After her series of articles is awarded three Pulitzer Prizes, investigative reporter Kate Townsend is haunted by the knowledge that her new-found fame has been purchased at too high a price. She is certain that McCall, an internationally acclaimed cardiologist, researcher, and a 2002 nominee for the Nobel Prize for Medicine, is not guilty.\n Texas governor Greg Bell hires former homicide detective and criminal defense attorney Rich Jansen to fix the escalating problems at the Huntsville Prisons recently inflamed by a lawsuit against infamous inmate Dr. Lindsey McCall. When Jansens skills quickly result in the resignation of an incompetent prison medical director, he realizes that this strange saga is just beginning.\n Mark Twain wrote that forgiveness was the fragrance shed by a violet upon the heel of the boot that has crushed it. This medical mystery weaves together the lives of two sisters, Lindsey and Paula, with those of strangers as each copes with loss, betrayal, jealousy, and the exquisitely painful journey to forgiveness.",
