This volume is about the 2-dimensional case, which is much more difficult. In our construction, the setup is a Lie crossed module: there is a Lie group H, together with an action on it by another Lie group G. The multiplicative integral is an element of H, and it is the limit of Riemann products. Each Riemann product involves a fractal decomposition of the surface into kites (triangles with strings connecting them to the base point). There is a twisting of the integrand, that comes from a 1-dimensional multiplicative integral along the strings, with values in the group G.The main result of this work is the 3-dimensional nonabelian Stokes theorem. This result is new; only a special case of it was predicted (without proof) in papers in mathematical physics. Our constructions and proofs are of a straightforward nature. There are plenty of illustrations to clarify the geometric constructions. Our volume touches on some of the central issues (e.g., descent for nonabelian gerbes) in an unusually down-to-earth manner, involving analysis, differential geometry, combinatorics and Lie theory instead of the 2-categories and 2-functors that other authors prefer.", "author": "Amnon Yekutieli", "slug": "nonabelian-multiplicative-integration-on-surfaces-265602-9789814663861-amnon-yekutieli", "thumbnail_image": "//redshelf-images.s3-external-1.amazonaws.com/thumbnail/9789814663861.jpg", "default_thumbnail_image": "//redshelf-images.s3-external-1.amazonaws.com/thumbnail/default_book_thumbnail.jpg", "product_type": "book", "product_id": "265602", "product_url": "/app/ecom/book/265602/nonabelian-multiplicative-integration-on-surfaces-265602-9789814663861-amnon-yekutieli", "bisac_codes": [ "MAT012030" ], "items_count": null, "identifiers": { "ISBN13": "9789814663847", "EISBN13": "9789814663861", "EISBN10": "9814663867" }, "drm": null, "cover_image": null, "default_cover_image": null, "book_type": null }, "relationships": { "lowest_offering": { "data": { "type": "offerings", "id": "00010015020973" } } } }, { "type": "Product", "id": "00010000265601", "attributes": { "name": "SWEPT-SOURCE OPTICAL COHERENCE TOMOGRAPHY: A COLOR ATLAS", "subtitle": "A Color Atlas", "description": "New Edition: Swept-Source Optical Coherence Tomography (2nd Edition)This book is written for retinal specialists and clinicians with a special interest in retinal diseases. The chapters are self-contained and can be read independently. Readers will find the topics covered are diverse and advanced courses can be taught out of this book. The first part of the book is dedicated to fractional monotone approximation theory introduced for the first time by the author, taking the related ordinary theory of usual differentiation at the fractional differentiation level with polynomials and splines as approximators. The second part deals with the approximation by discrete singular operators of the Favard style, for example, of the Picard and Gauss-Weierstrass types. Then, it continues in a very detailed and extensive chapter on approximation by interpolating operators induced by neural networks, a connection to computer science. This book ends with the approximation theory and functional analysis on time scales, a very modern topic, detailing all the pros and cons of this method. The results in this book are expected to find applications in many areas of pure and applied mathematics. It happened because scientists since the Manhattan project have envisioned controlled nuclear fusion in obtaining energy with no carbon dioxide emissions and no toxic nuclear waste products. This large toroidal magnetic confinement ITER machine is described from confinement process to advanced physics of plasma-wall interactions, where pulses erupt from core plasma blistering the machine walls. Emissions from the walls reduce the core temperature which must remain ten times hotter than the 15 million degree core solar temperature to maintain ITER fusion power. The huge temperature gradient from core to wall that drives intense plasma turbulence is described in detail. Also explained are the methods designed to limit the growth of small magnetic islands, the growth of edge localized plasma plumes and the solid state physics limits of the stainless steel walls of the confinement vessel from the burning plasma. Designs of the wall coatings and the special 'exhaust pipe' for spent hot plasma are provided in two chapters. By combining law and economics perspectives on the international trading system, Trachtman takes an interdisciplinary approach in analyzing the topic of globalization and economic development. In a developing economy, as globalization proceeds, a critical factor is the relationship between liberalization of movement of goods, services, and people, on the one hand, and the right to regulate, including the right to regulate for development, on the other hand. In the context of market access, all countries need the right to restrict imports of goods or services that may hurt consumers or the broader society, and developing countries sometimes need the ability to subsidize their own goods and services, or sometimes to restrict imports of goods or services, in order to promote development. Nonetheless, both developed and developing countries often fall into the trap of regulating for protectionist or corrupt reasons. Finding the right balance between market access and regulation is the subject of analysis in this collected volume of 16 papers by Trachtman, and presented in a manner that is accessible and interesting to both law and economics readers. Over the years, in making decisions on issues relating to trade, investment and security, the Australian government has often resorted to the notion of 'national interest'. This book attempts to analyse national interest from the perspectives of economics, finance, international trade, foreign direct investment, international relations, energy resources, and migration in the context of Australia in the Asian century.Currently, there are no multidisciplinary books on the Australian national interest. This book fills the gap with a broad and integrated approach in examining the subject. Academics, researchers, and students of various disciplines (such as economics, finance, international relations, international trade, foreign direct investment and Asian studies), policy advisors, government agencies, financial institutions, and trade law practitioners from around the world will find this book useful and stimulating.", "author": "John Hynes Farrar, Mary Hiscock, Vai Io Lo", "slug": "australias-trade-investment-and-security-in-the-asian-century-265590-9789814632881", "thumbnail_image": "//redshelf-images.s3-external-1.amazonaws.com/thumbnail/9789814632881.jpg", "default_thumbnail_image": "//redshelf-images.s3-external-1.amazonaws.com/thumbnail/default_book_thumbnail.jpg", "product_type": "book", "product_id": "265590", "product_url": "/app/ecom/book/265590/australias-trade-investment-and-security-in-the-asian-century-265590-9789814632881", "bisac_codes": [ "POL011020" ], "items_count": null, "identifiers": { "ISBN13": "9789814632867", "EISBN13": "9789814632881", "EISBN10": "9814632880" }, "drm": null, "cover_image": null, "default_cover_image": null, "book_type": null }, "relationships": { "lowest_offering": { "data": { "type": "offerings", "id": "00010014988238" } } } }, { "type": "Product", "id": "00010000265589", "attributes": { "name": "JAPAN AND ASIA: ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AND NATION BUILDING", "subtitle": "Economic Development and Nation Building", "description": "The book is a precious reference book for development economics or the political economy of development in Asia or anywhere else. Research on developing countries has been limited by individual scholars' observations, particularly about the value-related issues like politics or religions. It provides a comprehensive overview of the author's work including significant discoveries and pioneering contributions, such as the discovery of extremely effective dissociative electron transfer reactions of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) adsorbed on ice surfaces and its implications for atmospheric ozone depletion; the proposal of the cosmic-ray-driven electron-induced-reaction (CRE) theory for the ozone hole; the predictions of 11-year cyclic variations in polar ozone loss and stratospheric cooling; the discovery of the nearly perfect linear correlation between CFCs and global surface temperature; the proposal of the CFC theory for modern global warming; the discovery of greenhouse-gas-specific climate sensitivity and the parameter-free calculation of global surface temperature change caused by CFCs; the prediction of global cooling; and so on.Unlike conventional atmospheric and climate models, the author's theoretical models were established on robust observed data rather than computer simulations with multiple parameters. The new theories have shown the best agreements with the observed data within 10% uncertainties. This book highlights the scientific understandings of the world-concerned problems from the unique point of view of a physicist who seeks theories with great simplicity and superior predictive capacity. This book is self-contained and unified in presentation. It may be used as an advanced book by graduate students and even ambitious undergraduates in physics, chemistry, environmental and climate sciences. It is also suitable for non-expert readers and policy makers who wish to have an overview of the sciences behind atmospheric ozone depletion and global climate change.", "author": "Qing-bin Lu", "slug": "new-theories-prediction-on-the-ozone-hole-climate-change-265588-9789814619462-qing-bin-lu", "thumbnail_image": "//redshelf-images.s3-external-1.amazonaws.com/thumbnail/9789814619462.jpg", "default_thumbnail_image": "//redshelf-images.s3-external-1.amazonaws.com/thumbnail/default_book_thumbnail.jpg", "product_type": "book", "product_id": "265588", "product_url": "/app/ecom/book/265588/new-theories-prediction-on-the-ozone-hole-climate-change-265588-9789814619462-qing-bin-lu", "bisac_codes": [ "SCI042000" ], "items_count": null, "identifiers": { "ISBN13": "9789814619448", "EISBN13": "9789814619462", "EISBN10": "9814619469" }, "drm": null, "cover_image": null, "default_cover_image": null, "book_type": null }, "relationships": { "lowest_offering": { "data": { "type": "offerings", "id": "00010014967979" } } } }, { "type": "Product", "id": "00010000265587", "attributes": { "name": "INTELLIGENT BIG MULTIMEDIA DATABASES", "subtitle": "", "description": "Multimedia databases address a growing number of commercially important applications such as media on demand, surveillance systems and medical systems. The book presents essential and relevant techniques and algorithms to develop and implement large multimedia database systems. The traditional relational database model is based on a relational algebra that is an offshoot of first-order logic and of the algebra of sets. The simple relational model is not powerful enough to address multimedia data. Because of this, multimedia databases are categorized into many major areas. Each of these areas are now so extensive that a major understanding of the mathematical core concepts requires the study of different fields such as information retrieval, digital image processing, feature extraction, fractals, machine learning, neuronal networks and high-dimensional indexing. The topics range from meta analysis, clinical trial design, causal inference, personalized medicine to machine learning and next generation sequence analysis. Since the publication of the first edition, there have been tremendous advances in biostatistics and bioinformatics. The new edition tries to cover as many important emerging areas and reflect as much progress as possible. Many distinguished scholars, who greatly advanced their research areas in statistical methodology as well as practical applications, also have revised several chapters with relevant updates and written new ones from scratch. The new edition has been divided into four sections, including, Statistical Methods in Medicine and Epidemiology, Statistical Methods in Clinical Trials, Statistical Genetics, and General Methods. To reflect the rise of modern statistical genetics as one of the most fertile research areas since the publication of the first edition, the brand new section on Statistical Genetics includes entirely new chapters reflecting the state of the art in the field.Although tightly related, all the book chapters are self-contained and can be read independently. All too often, the performance of developing countries has not been assessed using appropriately conducted studies. The papers in this book are chosen to bridge this gap and show how a quantitative approach to policy evaluation can help resolve controversies and explain the choice of observed policies. The book brings together carefully selected papers that assess the impacts of various trade and macro policies, by quantifying the policies of developing countries at the macro level (exchange rate, investment, savings) and at the sector level (trade and industrial policies), in addition to policies of developed countries towards developing countries (trade preferences, quotas, VERs and migration policies). Facets of the political economy of trade, migration, and climate policies are explored (such as the enlargement of the EU, the rise of regionalism and how it can ease the pains of adjustment to trade liberalization, openness and inequality). Growing tensions between trade and the environment are also investigated. Our ultimate goal is to develop successful problem solvers who are able to understand concepts, master fundamental skills, reason logically, apply mathematics, enjoy learning, and strategise their thinking. These qualities will prepare students for life-long learning and careers in the 21st century. The materials covered are derived from psychological theories, education praxis, research findings, and mathematics discourse, mediated by the author's professional experiences in mathematics education in four countries over the past four decades. They are organised into ten chapters aligned with the Singapore mathematics curriculum framework to help teachers and educators from Singapore and other countries deepen their understanding about the so-called 'Singapore Maths'.The book strikes a balance between mathematical rigour and pedagogical diversity, without rigid adherence to either. This is relevant to the current discussion about the relative roles of mathematics content knowledge and pedagogical content knowledge in effective teaching.
