This is a textbook to introduce these phenomena at a level suitable for a graduate course, by modelling them mathematically, and describing numerical simulations and laboratory experiments. The visualization of instabilities is emphasized, with many figures, and in references to more still and moving pictures. The relation of chaos to transition is discussed at length. Many worked examples and exercises for students illustrate the ideas of the text. Readers are assumed to be fluent in linear algebra, advanced calculus, elementary theory of ordinary differential equations, complex variables and the elements of fluid mechanics. Chapters 2-4 study transfers, debt, and monetary/wage policy-making and outcomes, stressing that participation enhances transfer-policy responsiveness to inequality and vice versa, that policy-making veto actors retard fiscal-policy adjustments, inducing greater long-run debt-responses to all other political-economic stimuli, and that monetary policy's nominal and real effects depend, respectively, on the broader political-economic interest-structure and on wage-price bargainers' sectorial composition and coordination. Broadly, the book argues that these developments have exacerbated the distributional conflicts inherent in the policies to which postwar governments had committed while undermining their more-universally desired efficiency-fostering roles. Battles that once raged primarily over policies conducted within postwar-commitment frameworks now rage over the putative 'reforms' of the frameworks that will set the institutional rules within which democratic struggle over macroeconomic policy and free-market competition will continue.", "author": "Robert J. Merom analyzes the role of brutality in counterinsurgency, the historical foundations of moral and expedient opposition to war, and the actions states traditionally took in order to preserve foreign policy autonomy. The author recounts the story of the search for and discovery of a proof of a formula conjectured in the late 1970s: the number of n x n alternating sign matrices, objects that generalize permutation matrices. While apparent that the conjecture must be true, the proof was elusive. Researchers became drawn to this problem, making connections to aspects of invariant theory, to symmetric functions, to hypergeometric and basic hypergeometric series, and, finally, to the six-vertex model of statistical mechanics. All these threads are brought together in Zeilberger's 1996 proof of the original conjecture. The book is accessible to anyone with a knowledge of linear algebra. In the nineteenth century the authors examine the Cuvier-Geoffroy debate, pre-Darwinian geology and natural theology, Darwin and the transition from Darwin to the revival of Mendelism. Two chapters deal with the evolutionary synthesis and such questions as the species problem, the reducibility or otherwise of biology to physics and chemistry, and the problem of biological explanation in terms of function and teleology. The final chapters reflect on the implications of the philosophy of biology for philosophy of science in general.", "author": "Marjorie Grene, David Depew", "slug": "the-philosophy-of-biology-268842-9781316037614-marjorie-grene-david-depew", "thumbnail_image": "//redshelf-images.s3-external-1.amazonaws.com/thumbnail/9781316037614.jpg", "default_thumbnail_image": "//redshelf-images.s3-external-1.amazonaws.com/thumbnail/default_book_thumbnail.jpg", "product_type": "book", "product_id": "268842", "product_url": "/app/ecom/book/268842/the-philosophy-of-biology-268842-9781316037614-marjorie-grene-david-depew", "bisac_codes": [ "SCI075000" ], "items_count": null, "identifiers": { "ISBN13": "9780521643719", "EISBN13": "9781316037614", "EISBN10": "1316037614" }, "drm": null, "cover_image": null, "default_cover_image": null, "book_type": null }, "relationships": { "lowest_offering": { "data": { "type": "offerings", "id": "00010033316757" } } } }, { "type": "Product", "id": "00010000268841", "attributes": { "name": "Religion and Politics in Comparative Perspective", "subtitle": "The One, The Few, and The Many", "description": "Religion is resurgent across the globe. In many countries religion is a powerful source of political mobilization, and in some a potent social cleavage. In some religion reinforces the state, in others it provides the space for resistance. This book contains a series of detailed studies examining religion and politics in specific countries or regions. The cases include countries with one dominant religious tradition, and others with two or more competing traditions. They include Catholicism, Protestantism, Islam, Hinduism, Shinto and Buddhism. They include states where religion and politics are closely linked, and others with at least a low wall of separation between church and state. The cases are organized by the type of religious marketplace, but allow many other comparisons as well. To demonstrate this point, the authors conduct a thorough and substantive description and analysis of the conceptual and philosophical underpinnings of systems development. In particular they analyse a number of systems development methodologies including structured methods, prototyping, ETHICS and Soft Systems Methodology to reveal the underlying conceptual and philosophical foundations. The book provides an in-depth analysis of data modelling theory and its links with theories of language and cognition. In making a diagnosis, individual psychiatrists inevitably accord differing importance to certain features. By regulating the order and number of conditions to be recorded, a multiaxial framework provides for internationally comparable descriptions of mental state. This volume provides the psychiatric sections of ICD10 in a form that is adapted for ease of use of those dealing with mental disorders in childhood and adolescence. Descriptions have been grouped into axes which have been chosen to provide unambiguous information of maximum clinical usefulness in the greatest number of cases. Building on the popular original framework of four axes, the system has been greatly improved by the inclusion of a new axis for psychosocial situations and by the addition of a further sixth axis on adaptive level which enables clinicians to code an individual's current level of disability.", "author": "World Health Organisation, Sir Michael Rutter", "slug": "multiaxial-classification-of-child-and-adolescent-psychiatric-disorders-268839-9780511899096-world-health-organisation", "thumbnail_image": "//redshelf-images.s3-external-1.amazonaws.com/thumbnail/9780511899096.jpg", "default_thumbnail_image": "//redshelf-images.s3-external-1.amazonaws.com/thumbnail/default_book_thumbnail.jpg", "product_type": "book", "product_id": "268839", "product_url": "/app/ecom/book/268839/multiaxial-classification-of-child-and-adolescent-psychiatric-disorders-268839-9780511899096-world-health-organisation", "bisac_codes": [ "MED102000" ], "items_count": null, "identifiers": { "ISBN13": "9780521581332", "EISBN13": "9780511899096", "EISBN10": "0511899092" }, "drm": null, "cover_image": null, "default_cover_image": null, "book_type": null }, "relationships": { "lowest_offering": { "data": { "type": "offerings", "id": "00010033313311" } } } }, { "type": "Product", "id": "00010000268837", "attributes": { "name": "Guide to Publishing in Psychology Journals", "subtitle": "", "description": "The Guide to Publishing in Psychology Journals is a complete guide to writing psychology articles for publication. It has greatly stimulated research in many sciences and given rise to the vast new area variously called applied dynamics, nonlinear science, or chaos theory. This introduction for senior undergraduate and beginning graduate students of mathematics, physics, and engineering combines mathematical rigor with copious examples of important applications. It covers the central topological and probabilistic notions in dynamics ranging from Newtonian mechanics to coding theory. Readers need not be familiar with manifolds or measure theory; the only prerequisite is a basic undergraduate analysis course. The authors begin by describing the wide array of scientific and mathematical questions that dynamics can address. They then use a progression of examples to present the concepts and tools for describing asymptotic behavior in dynamical systems, gradually increasing the level of complexity. The final chapters introduce modern developments and applications of dynamics. Subjects include contractions, logistic maps, equidistribution, symbolic dynamics, mechanics, hyperbolic dynamics, strange attractors, twist maps, and KAM-theory.", "author": "Boris Hasselblatt, Anatole Katok", "slug": "a-first-course-in-dynamics-268836-9781316037362-boris-hasselblatt-anatole-katok", "thumbnail_image": "//redshelf-images.s3-external-1.amazonaws.com/thumbnail/9781316037362.jpg", "default_thumbnail_image": "//redshelf-images.s3-external-1.amazonaws.com/thumbnail/default_book_thumbnail.jpg", "product_type": "book", "product_id": "268836", "product_url": "/app/ecom/book/268836/a-first-course-in-dynamics-268836-9781316037362-boris-hasselblatt-anatole-katok", "bisac_codes": [ "MAT000000" ], "items_count": null, "identifiers": { "ISBN13": "9780521587501", "EISBN13": "9781316037362", "EISBN10": "1316037363" }, "drm": null, "cover_image": null, "default_cover_image": null, "book_type": null }, "relationships": { "lowest_offering": { "data": { "type": "offerings", "id": "00010033304421" } } } } ], "meta": { "pagination": { "page": 75382, "pages": 78413, "count": 1568241 } } }
