Self-confident, articulate, and dynamic, these films situate themselves in the global exchange of cinematic images, citing and rewriting American gangster narratives, Kung Fu action films, and paralleling other emergent European minority cinemas. This, the first book-length study on the topic, will function as an introduction to this emergent and growing cinema and offer a survey of important films and directors of the last two decades. Social change has also been mediated by the global forces of Western biomedicine and orthodox Islam. This book examines the effects of these modernizing trends on mental health and on local, traditional healing as the new inequalities have exacerbated existing social tensions and led to increased vulnerability to mental illness. It is the young women of Sylhet who are most affected. The global economy has increased competition for resources and led to marriage being seen as a route to economic advancement. Parents prefer to give their daughters in marriage to families that will widen their social contacts and enhance their economic and social standing. Accordingly, the young wifes outsider status (and hence vulnerability to mental illness) has increased as it is no longer customary to give daughters in marriage to local kin. Yet, patients and their families do not work out tensions passively. They are active agents in the construction of their own diagnosis. The extent to which patients act or are acted upon is an investigation that runs throughout the book.</p>", "author": "Alyson Callan", "slug": "patients-and-agents-269848-9780857454898-alyson-callan", "thumbnail_image": "//redshelf-images.s3-external-1.amazonaws.com/thumbnail/9780857454898.jpg", "default_thumbnail_image": "//redshelf-images.s3-external-1.amazonaws.com/thumbnail/default_book_thumbnail.jpg", "product_type": "book", "product_id": "269848", "product_url": "/app/ecom/book/269848/patients-and-agents-269848-9780857454898-alyson-callan", "bisac_codes": [ "SOC002010", "SOC026010" ], "items_count": null, "identifiers": { "ISBN13": "9780857454881", "EISBN13": "9780857454898", "EISBN10": "0857454897" }, "drm": null, "cover_image": null, "default_cover_image": null, "book_type": null }, "relationships": { "lowest_offering": { "data": { "type": "offerings", "id": "00010034247235" } } } }, { "type": "Product", "id": "00010000269847", "attributes": { "name": "Lost Objects Of Desire", "subtitle": "The Performances of Jeremy Irons", "description": "<p>\n\tThis first book-length critical study of Jeremy Irons concentrates on his key performances and acting style. Yet much of the literature on civil society pays very little attention to the complex relations between civil society and the family. These two spheres constitute a central element in democratic development and culture and form a counterweight to some of the most distressing aspects of modernity, such as the excessive privatization of home life and the unceasing work-and-spend routines. This volume reassesses the validity and reach of Habermass concept beyond political theory by exploring concrete literary and cultural manifestations in early modern and modern Europe. The contributors ask whether, and in what forms, a social formation that rightfully can be called the public sphere really existed at particular historical junctures, and consider the senses in which the public sphere should rather be replaced by a multitude of interacting cultural and social publics.
