However, comparatively little research has been done on the transgenerational effects of trauma and the means by which experiences are transmitted from person to person across time to become intrinsic parts of the social fabric. With eight contributions covering Africa, Central and South America, China, Europe, and the Middle East, this volume sheds new light on the role of memory in constructing popular histories or historiographies of violence in the absence of, or in contradistinction to, authoritative written histories. It brings new ethnographic data to light and presents a truly cross-cultural range of case studies that will greatly enhance the discussion of memory and violence across disciplines.
", "author": "Nicolas Argenti, Katharina Schramm", "slug": "remembering-violence-269744-9781845459703", "thumbnail_image": "//redshelf-images.s3-external-1.amazonaws.com/thumbnail/9781845459703.jpg", "default_thumbnail_image": "//redshelf-images.s3-external-1.amazonaws.com/thumbnail/default_book_thumbnail.jpg", "product_type": "book", "product_id": "269744", "product_url": "/app/ecom/book/269744/remembering-violence-269744-9781845459703", "bisac_codes": [ "SOC002000", "HIS054000" ], "items_count": null, "identifiers": { "ISBN13": "9781845456245", "EISBN13": "9781845459703", "EISBN10": "1845459709" }, "drm": null, "cover_image": null, "default_cover_image": null, "book_type": null }, "relationships": { "lowest_offering": { "data": { "type": "offerings", "id": "00010034248077" } } } }, { "type": "Product", "id": "00010000269743", "attributes": { "name": "Rethinking the Informal City", "subtitle": "Critical Perspectives from Latin America", "description": "
\n\tLatin American cities have always been characterized by a strong tension between what is vaguely described as their formal and informal dimensions. It is not that all whale species are at the brink of extinction, but that whales have become important symbols to both pro- and anti-whaling factions and can easily be appropriated as the common heritage of humankind. This book, the first of its kind, is therefore not about whales and whaling per se but about how people communicate about whales and whaling. It contributes to a better understanding and discussion of controversial environmental issues: Why and how are issues selected? How is knowledge on these issues produced and distributed by organizations and activists? And why do affluent countries like Japan and Norway still support whaling, which is of insignificant economic importance? Basing his analysis on fieldwork in Japan and Norway and at the International Whaling Commission, the author argues how an image of a superwhale has been constructed and how this image has replaced meat and oil as the important whale commodity. He concludes that the whaling issue provides an arena where NGOs and authorities on each side can unite, swapping political legitimacy and building personal relations that can be useful on issues where relations are less harmonious.
", "author": "Arne Kalland", "slug": "unveiling-the-whale-269730-9781845459550-arne-kalland", "thumbnail_image": "//redshelf-images.s3-external-1.amazonaws.com/thumbnail/9781845459550.jpg", "default_thumbnail_image": "//redshelf-images.s3-external-1.amazonaws.com/thumbnail/default_book_thumbnail.jpg", "product_type": "book", "product_id": "269730", "product_url": "/app/ecom/book/269730/unveiling-the-whale-269730-9781845459550-arne-kalland", "bisac_codes": [ "SOC002000", "POL011000" ], "items_count": null, "identifiers": { "ISBN13": "9780857451583", "EISBN13": "9781845459550", "EISBN10": "1845459555" }, "drm": null, "cover_image": null, "default_cover_image": null, "book_type": null }, "relationships": { "lowest_offering": { "data": { "type": "offerings", "id": "00010034245383" } } } }, { "type": "Product", "id": "00010000269729", "attributes": { "name": "Dismantling the Dream Factory", "subtitle": "Gender, German Cinema, and the Postwar Quest for a New Film Language", "description": "
\n\tThe history of postwar German cinema has most often been told as a story of failure, a failure paradoxically epitomized by the remarkable popularity of film throughout the late 1940s and 1950s. Through the analysis of 10 representative films, Hester Baer reassesses this period, looking in particular at how the attempt to dismantle the dream factory of Nazi entertainment cinema resulted in a new cinematic language which developed as a result of the changing audience demographic. In an era when female viewers comprised 70 per cent of cinema audiences a womens cinema emerged, which sought to appeal to female spectators through its genres, star choices, stories and formal conventions. In addition to analyzing the formal language and narrative content of these films, Baer uses a wide array of other sources to reconstruct the original context of their reception, including promotional and publicity materials, film programs, censorship documents, reviews and spreads in fan magazines. This book presents a new take on an essential period, which saw the rebirth of German cinema after its thorough delegitimization under the Nazi regime.
", "author": "Hester Baer", "slug": "dismantling-the-dream-factory-269729-9781845459451-hester-baer", "thumbnail_image": "//redshelf-images.s3-external-1.amazonaws.com/thumbnail/9781845459451.jpg", "default_thumbnail_image": "//redshelf-images.s3-external-1.amazonaws.com/thumbnail/default_book_thumbnail.jpg", "product_type": "book", "product_id": "269729", "product_url": "/app/ecom/book/269729/dismantling-the-dream-factory-269729-9781845459451-hester-baer", "bisac_codes": [ "PER004030", "SOC032000" ], "items_count": null, "identifiers": { "ISBN13": "9781845456054", "EISBN13": "9781845459451", "EISBN10": "1845459458" }, "drm": null, "cover_image": null, "default_cover_image": null, "book_type": null }, "relationships": { "lowest_offering": { "data": { "type": "offerings", "id": "00010026489452" } } } }, { "type": "Product", "id": "00010000269728", "attributes": { "name": "Latin America Facing China", "subtitle": "South-South Relations beyond the Washington Consensus", "description": "
\n\tThe last quarter of the twentieth century was a period of economic crises, increasing indebtedness as well as financial instability for Latin America and most other developing countries; in contrast, China showed amazingly high growth rates during this time and has since become the third largest economy in the world. Yet, as the author convincingly argues, there is little justification for maintaining the notion of Swiss exceptionalism, and excluding the Swiss radical right from cross-national research. His book presents the first comprehensive study of the development of the radical right in Switzerland since the end of the Second World War and therefore fills a significant gap in our knowledge. It examines the role that parties and political entrepreneurs of the populist right, intellectuals and publications of the New Right, as well as propagandists and militant groups of the extreme right assume in Swiss politics and society. The author shows that post-war Switzerland has had an electorally and discursively important radical right since the 1960s that has exhibited continuity and persistence in its organizations and activities. Recently, this has resulted in the consolidation of a diverse Swiss radical right that is now established at various levels within the political and public arena.
", "author": "Damir Skenderovic", "slug": "the-radical-right-in-switzerland-269726-9781845459482-damir-skenderovic", "thumbnail_image": "//redshelf-images.s3-external-1.amazonaws.com/thumbnail/9781845459482.jpg", "default_thumbnail_image": "//redshelf-images.s3-external-1.amazonaws.com/thumbnail/default_book_thumbnail.jpg", "product_type": "book", "product_id": "269726", "product_url": "/app/ecom/book/269726/the-radical-right-in-switzerland-269726-9781845459482-damir-skenderovic", "bisac_codes": [ "HIS010020", "POL042030" ], "items_count": null, "identifiers": { "ISBN13": "9781845455804", "EISBN13": "9781845459482", "EISBN10": "1845459482" }, "drm": null, "cover_image": null, "default_cover_image": null, "book_type": null }, "relationships": { "lowest_offering": { "data": { "type": "offerings", "id": "00010034247767" } } } }, { "type": "Product", "id": "00010000269725", "attributes": { "name": "Substitute Parents", "subtitle": "Biological and Social Perspectives on Alloparenting in Human Societies", "description": "
\n\tFrom a comparative perspective, human life histories are unique and raising offspring is unusually costly: humans have relatively short birth intervals compared to other apes, childhood is long, mothers care simultaneously for many dependent children (other apes raise one offspring at a time), infant mortality is high in natural fertility/mortality populations, and human females have a long post-reproductive lifespan. These features conspire to make child raising very burdensome. Mothers frequently defray these costs with paternal help (not usual in other ape species), although this contribution is not always enough. Grandmothers, elder siblings, paid allocarers, or society as a whole, help to defray the costs of childcare, both in our evolutionary past and now.
