"description": "
Based on the day-to-day record of an American sociologist imprisoned for three years in a Japanese concentration camp in the seaport town of Bacolod, Negros Island, Philippines, this book deals with the relations between people in a situation of stress. An interracial group made up of many nationalities, varied economic statuses, religions, and professions gave Mrs. Vaughan ample material for her study. What is the basis of leadership in a crisis situation? What are the critical tensions? The patterns of survival and adjustment? What effect does previous cultural background have on reaction to calamity? These questions, among many others significant for social psychologists, psychiatrists, and all those concerned with human relationships, find answers here.

Originally published in 1949.

The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. "description": "
James Joyce, the great and bold literary innovator of our time, was also a rebel in life, a self-exile from family, nation, and religion. Criticism of Joyce, when it has not been purely technical, has sought in Joyce's work ideas as radical as his techniques and as rebellious as his life. Mr. OBrien discovers that Joyce was neither morally revolutionary nor morally neutral. Instead, Joyce emerges as an Irishman clinging to a conception of human nature largely derived from the Irish Catholic background he so vehemently denounced. In this study of Joyces work, from his early poems through Ulysses and Finnegans Wake, Mr. OBrien argues that Joyce eventually achieved, in his books, a comic perspective on the follies of mankind.

Originally published in 1968.

The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. "description": "
Czechoslovakia, once considered Central Europe's model democracy, has been a Soviet satellite since 1948. The Communists now boast that \"socialism\" has defeated capitalism politically and has surpassed it in production, in living standards, and in social justice. How realistic is this picture of conditions in a country once oriented to the West? This question is the focus of Professor Taborskys book. In attempting to answer it, the author first reviews the history of the Communist Partys rise to power and then examines in detail the economic, social, political, and cultural programs of their twelve-year regime, comparing stated plans with actual results through 1960. His final assessment of the Partys successes and failures measures both effort and result against the human cost.

Originally published in 1961.

The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. "description": "
In the latter part of the eleventh century a revolutionary group within the Western Church, centered in the papacy, attempted to overthrow the early medieval system of church-state relations by which the church in each country was under control of the kings and other secular rulers. Here is a comprehensive history of these controversies during the crucial period from the death of Archbishop Lanfranc in 1089 to the end of the reign of Henry I in 1135. The greater part of the book is concerned with the pontificate of Archbishop Anselm (1093-1109) and includes the first substantial account of the episcopal career of this famous theologian. In a concluding chapter, the obscure period in the history of the English Church from 1109 to 1135 is investigated, and the methods by which Henry I reasserted royal authority over the Church are indicated.

Originally published in 1958.

The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. Professor Hamm approaches all Dufays compositions from the point of view of mensural practice, and has been able to date each piece more precisely than would have been possible in a chronology based on manuscript studies or stylistic analyses. He has divided the works into nine groups, according to details of mensural usage, and on the basis of datable works and other evidence has suggested dates within which the pieces of each group were written. Based on his study of Dufays mensural practice, the author suggests that the Missa Sancti Antoni and several other works attributed to Dufay may not have been written by him.

Originally published in 1964.

The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. Major Frederic Brown offers here the first critical analysis of this curious World War II phenomenon. He investigates the nature of restraints-political, military, economic, and psychological-operative in varying degrees between 1919 and 1945, when U.S. chemical warfare policy was being formed. Starting with the experiences of toxic agent use during World War I, Major Brown shows how various restraints to gas warfare developed during the inter-war years. He then discusses the World War II experience. In the conclusion Major Brown relates his findings to contemporary conflicts and offers important implications for the future of the cold war.

Originally published in 1968.

The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. "description": "
Major crimes in the United States reached an all-time high in 1954, exceeding the two-million mark for the third successive year. In spite of such groups as the famous Kefauver Committee, organized crime continues to entrench itself in the cities. Meanwhile, amid public apathy, the court calendars grow longer and justice is delayed. Thousands of new laws are passed each year, often without proper study, so that no lawyer today can achieve real mastery of even one major branch of his profession. In this little book, literally a challenge, Chief Justice Vanderbilt speaks out against these situations and abuses. Drawing on his experience as Chief Justice under the reformed court system provided by the 1947 New Jersey Constitution, he explains the need for reform, the importance of judicial administration, the problems of selecting judges and jurors, and the importance of legal procedure. In the matter of law reform he has long been known as a leader and fighter. In his book, originally delivered as the White Lectures at the University of Virginia Law School, he asks his readers to meet the challenge of law reform.

Originally published in 1955.

The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press.
