"description": "Annual Review in Automatic Programming is a collection of papers presented at the Working Conference on Automatic Programming of Digital Computers held in Brighton, UK, on April 1-3, 1959. Contributors focus on developments in automatic programming and cover topics ranging from automatic coding for TREAC to the PEGASUS and MERCURY autocodes, automatic programming of DEUCE, and the philosophy of programming. Business applications of automatic programming are also discussed. This book is comprised of 17 chapters and begins with a review of future trends in automatic programming, focusing on the environment of a computer as well as machine languages and automatic codes. The features of existing automatic programming languages are also described, along with the advantages and disadvantages of such languages. The next chapter presents some of the arguments in favor of standardized notations for programming, mainly with reference to scientific problems. The reader is also introduced to the Mark 5 system of automatic coding for TREAC; assembly, interpretive, and conversion programs for PEGASUS; and application of formula translation to the automatic coding of ordinary differential equations. The final chapter describes a machine designed for the manufacture of accurate models for wind tunnel tests. This monograph will be of interest to computer programmers, computer manufacturers, computer users, and university students.",

It was sponsored jointly by the Office of Naval Research of the U.S. Navy and Brown University. The symposium was devoted to plasticity. The intention was to provide critical reviews of recent developments in certain areas of plasticity of particular current interest and importance, and to supplement these with short accounts of related current research work. The papers presented at the symposium covered the following areas: atomic theory of plastic flow and fracture; stress-strain relations including thermoplasticity and creep; basic theory including stability and uniqueness; boundary value problems including plates and shells; dynamic loading and plastic waves; and developments in design. Two talks were also held for the purpose of reviewing the present status of application of plasticity in design of naval vessels. The symposium was opened by Captain J. C. Myers on behalf of the Office of Naval Research and by Professor W. Prager on behalf of Brown University. Professor Prager closed the symposium by presenting a brief resume of the main accomplishments and trends in plasticity brought to light during the symposium.",

With each is given the lists of distinguished guests; a Victorian Menu taken from Kate Dickens's book What Shall We Have for Dinner?; and a matching one for use today. Recipes for carrying out both types of Menu follow each \"Occasion\".</p> <p>The book begins with the first dinner party of their married life in 1836 and ends with the completion of the book in 1852. Each chapter follows a quartet theme, with a repetition of four pages right through to the end. The first page of the quartet gives the date of the party (sometimes approximately), the home at which it was given, the guests present, and the life story. The second and third pages are devoted to matching Menus and recipes; and the fourth is an extract from Dickens's own works, chosen by his great granddaughter, Mrs. Stuart McHugh.</p>",

The volume begins by presenting the opening address on the symposium's main themes followed by a lecture on the factors influencing the nature and significance of research in the biological sciences. The papers presented cover topics such as methods for automatic and semi-automatic assay of steroids; the combination of gas chromatography and mass spectrometry for the investigation of complex mixtures; factors controlling steroid hormone metabolism; and the metabolism of free and conjugated estrogens. Other studies deal with the molecular basis of estrogen-binding in target cells; early biochemical events in the mouse testis associated with ultimate induction of interstitial cell tumors by estrogens; biochemical features of androgens; and effects of corticosteroid administration on rats. This book also presents panel discussions on the clinical aspects, biodynamics, and action of steroid hormones.",

Piaget's theory concerning the general pattern of intellectual development in children is discussed, along with his study of children from two English primary schools in differing environments. This book is comprised of seven chapters and opens with a brief background on the life of Piaget and his approach to his work. The next chapter summarizes Piaget's general theories, including his concept of intelligence and its development; his studies of the progress made by children towards higher levels of equilibrium; and the Piagetian stages of development. The reader is then introduced to Piaget's experiments and their results on the development of the thought, language, and moral judgment of the child. The final chapter considers some recorded criticisms of Piaget's methods and maturation system. This monograph will be a useful resource for educators and psychologists.",

It is part of a series of monographs that aim to report on research carried out in electronics and applied physics. The monographs are written by specialists in their own subjects. Wherever it is practical the monographs will be kept short in length to enable all those interested in electronics to find the essentials necessary for their work in a condensed and concentrated form. The book begins with a discussion of secondary electrons. Separate chapters cover methods for measuring secondary electron emission; numerical results on the secondary electron emission yield of both metals and metal compounds; the influence of externally adsorbed foreign atoms and ions on secondary electron emission; and the mechanism of secondary electron emission. The final three chapters deal with the application side. These include the applications of electron multiplication; the elimination of disturbing effects due to secondary electrons; and \"\"storage\"\" devices in which information on electrical charges is written on an insulating surface, often by making use of secondary electron emission.",

The book describes the nature and scope of selected team teaching programs; the manner in which such programs can be administered; the potential impact of team teaching on a developing curriculum; the role of faculty and students who constitute the teaching-learning team; the particular housing requirements of team teaching programs; and finally, the limitations and future prospects of this emerging concept. In the following chapters frequent reference is made to the philosophy, program, and methodology of Boston University's College of Basic Studies, where a team system was first developed in 1949 and where an entire collegiate two-year program of studies functions on a team teaching plan. This College's extensive experience with team teaching has made possible refinements which may interest those seeking to broaden their understanding of the potential role and function of team teaching in higher education.<br><br>* Rich in case studies, examples, and in-chapter elements that focus on the challenges of launching and operating a technology venture<br>* In-depth examination of intellectual property development, valuation, deal structuring, and equity preservation, issues of most relevance to technology start-ups<br>* Extensive discussion of technology management and continuous innovation as a competitive advantage<br>* Addresses the issue of leading, managing, motivating, and compensating technical workers<br>* More time on the fundamentals of marketing and selling, as these are elements of entrepreneurshipcommonly most neglected by engineers and scientists",

The main emphasis of the present volume is combustion, with contributions from authors who are themselves active in this field. In future volumes the scope will be widened to include articles on aircraft and spacecraft propulsion. The volume begins with a discussion of flow visualization techniques. It puts into perspective the developments in techniques which are particularly applicable to the flow of air and gases through such equipment as industrial furnaces and engine combustion systems, and to point the way to applying the experience we now have to the best advantage. Separate chapters cover chemical analysis in combustion chamber development; aerodynamic influences on flame stability; geometric-optical techniques in combustion research; flame quenching; and ignition in liquid propellant rocket engines.",

The development in this monograph is such that the theory and methods of uniresponse analysis and design stay very close to classical ANOVA. The book first discusses the multivariate aspect of linear models for location type of parameters, but under a univariate design, i.e. one in which each experimental unit is measured or studied with respect to all the responses. Separate chapters cover point estimation of location parameters; testing of linear hypotheses; properties of test procedures; and confidence bounds on a set of parametric functions. Subsequent chapters discuss a graphical internal comparison method for analyzing certain kinds of multiresponse experimental data; two classes of multiresponse designs, i.e. designated hierarchical and p-block designs; and the construction of various kinds of multiresponse designs.",

"description": "Special Theory of Relativity provides a discussion of the special theory of relativity. Special relativity is not, like other scientific theories, a statement about the matter that forms the physical world, but has the form of a condition that the explicit physical theories must satisfy. It is thus a form of description, playing to some extent the role of the grammar of physics, prescribing which combinations of theoretical statements are admissible as descriptions of the physical world. Thus, to describe it, one needs also to describe those specific theories and to say how much they are limited by it. The book is organized into two parts. The first part traces the historical development of the special theory of relativity, including Einstein's contribution, the elementary consequences of the Lorentz transformation, and applications in quantum theory. The second part contains extracts from various publications covering topics such as relative motion of the earth, and the luminiferous and dynamics of the electron.",

Separate chapters discuss the fundamentals of complex analysis; the concept of conformal transformations; the most important of the elementary functions; and the complex potential for a plane vector field and the application of the simplest methods of function theory to the analysis of such a field. Subsequent chapters cover the fundamental apparatus of the theory of regular functions, i.e. basic integral theorems and expansions in series; the general concept of an analytic function; applications of the theory of residues; and polygonal domain mapping. This book is intended for undergraduate and postgraduate students of higher technical institutes and for engineers wishing to increase their knowledge of theory.",

"description": "Waste Treatment contains the proceedings of the Second Symposium on the Treatment of Waste Waters, held on September 14-19, 1959 and organized by the Public Health Engineering Section of the Department of Civil Engineering of King's College at the University of Durham in the UK. The papers explore the theory and practice of wastewater treatment, with emphasis on biological treatment and the disposal of solids removed from liquid wastes. This book is comprised of 21 chapters and begins with a discussion on the biochemistry of aerobic treatment of organic waste and the biochemistry of anaerobic digestion. The next chapter deals with the ecology of activated sludge and bacteria beds and examines the factors determining the character and dominant organisms of a sludge. The reader is methodically introduced to the use of manometric methods in the study of sewage and trade wastes; biological oxidation systems for industrial waste treatment; application of recirculation to the purification of sewage and trade wastes; and treatment of distillery and antibiotics wastes. The effects of liquid wastes on receiving waters are also considered, along with the principles of vacuum filtration and their application to sludge-drying problems. The final chapter focuses on the reclamation of water from domestic and industrial wastes. This monograph will be a useful resource for policymakers and practitioners in the field of public health.",

Topics covered include woody growth as part of the total produce of plant societies; growth and form of forest trees; constitution and development of stands; and forest stand structure, increment, and yield in relation to silvicultural treatment. This book is divided into five sections and begins with an overview of the history of forest yield studies, as well as the place of forest yield theory in forest science. Research objectives and methods employed in forest yield studies are outlined. The discussion then turns to the interactions between soil, climate and plant production; the social structure of tree crops; growth performance of tree crops in relation to site; and disturbances in the normal trend of increment. The use of fertilizers for amelioration and treatment of forest soils are discussed from the standpoint of yield studies. This monograph will be a useful resource for practitioners in forestry, the natural sciences, plant physiology, soil science, and meteorology.",

The next chapter explores the compound nuclear and considers the theory of Breit and Wigner, resonances in nuclear reactions, and the statistical model or compound nucleus model. The reader is methodically introduced to the optical model and elastic scattering experiments; nuclear structure and nuclear forces; and direct interactions. The remaining chapters look at the theory of the effect of resonance levels on artificial disintegration; fluctuations of nuclear reaction widths; scattering of high-energy neutrons by nuclei; and regularities in the total cross-sections for fast neutrons. This monograph will be a useful resource for nuclear scientists and physicists as well as undergraduate students who have taken a first course in quantum mechanics.",

"description": "The Biology of Stentor summarizes all that has been learned about the biology of a certain group of ciliate protozoa: the stentors. Topics covered range from form and function in Stentor to behavior, fine structure, growth and division, and reorganization. Regeneration is also discussed, along with polarity, metabolism, genetics, and primordium development. This volume is comprised of 20 chapters and begins with a characterization of Stentor, with emphasis on its particular advantages in addressing general problems of biology. The reader is then introduced to form and function in Stentor, particularly S. coeruleus. The following chapters focus on the behavior (food selection, swimming, response to light, etc.) of stentors and the fine points of structure in terms of which this behavior is to be explained and which demonstrate the highly complex and precise achievements of morphogenesis. The remaining chapters explore growth and division in Stentor as well as the course of reorganization and regeneration; development of the oral primordium and how it is activated and inhibited; rate of regeneration in relation to the polar axis; fusion masses of whole stentors; and reconstitution in disarranged stentors. Various species of Stentor are also described, together with the techniques used to study them. The final chapter deals with hypotheses concerning the morphogenesis of ciliates. This book will be of interest to students and practitioners of biology and physiology.",
