                "description": "Western Europe and the New International Economic Order examines the views and positions of Western European nations regarding the New International Economic Order (NIEO). The factors influencing such positions are analyzed, namely, economic factors on the one hand, and social, political, and cultural factors on the other. This volume is comprised of seven chapters and begins with a brief sketch of Western Europe, followed by a discussion on Western Europe's reaction to four NIEO issues: the adjustment policies necessary to establish the NIEO; the Law of the Sea; the integrated approach to commodities; and official development assistance (ODA) transfers. The following chapters focus on the implications of the NIEO for Western European economy, social services, income redistribution, and social movements; the policies of Scandinavia and the so-called \"\"like-minded\"\" countries toward developing countries and the NIEO; and institutional and political factors for and against the NIEO in Western Europe. The final chapter outlines the role of Western Europe in solving the problems of the NIEO. This book will be a useful resource for economists and economic policymakers.",

Contributors explore how the steroid receptor complex modulates transcription of RNA and cover topics ranging from the sequential acquisition of responsiveness to estrogen in the rat uterus to the ontogeny of steroid receptors in the guinea pig.</p> <p>This book is comprised of 29 chapters and begins with a review of estrogen and estrogen effects in rat uterus and pituitary in culture. The embryonic chick Mullerian duct and several fetal guinea pig organs are then considered, followed by discussions on mammalian and chick liver, multi-hormonal control in rat liver; progesterone and decidualization; and rat mammary gland in culture. Glucocorticoids in developing pancreas, lung, and liver are examined, along with ecdysteroids in both locusts and Drosophila. Refractoriness is exemplified by gonadotropin action in the ovary. The remaining chapters deal with the role of steroid hormone receptors in brain development; the neural trigger for ovulation; aromatization and development of responsiveness of the brain to gonadal steroids; and neuroendocrine correlates of female-offspring interaction in maternal rats.</p> <p>This monograph will be of value to physiologists, biologists, and biochemists. </p>",

This book links the great powers' competition for overseas bases to several streams of more or less contemporary international relations theory. This monograph consists of seven chapters and opens with an introduction to the diplomacy of basing access, followed by a discussion on the different types or purposes of basing access as they have evolved over the past several decades in response to changes in diplomacy and military technology. The major powers' overseas basing-access networks in the consecutive interwar, early postwar, and recent postwar periods are then reviewed, along with the earlier corpus of geopolitical theory, specifically as it relates to basing diplomacy. Emphasis is on the conflicting assumptions about what reciprocal strategic advantages and disadvantages inhere to the geographic positions of the United States and USSR. The final chapter considers a number of \"\"functional\"\" areas of world politics that are closely intertwined with basing diplomacy, and relates the competition for facilities to raw materials access, surrogate wars, strategic deterrence, arms control, balances of payments, arms sales and aid, alliances, and other such staple concerns of international relations. This book will be of interest to political scientists, military and government officials, diplomats, and policymakers.",

                "description": "Control Applications of Nonlinear Programming contains the proceedings of the International Federation of Automatic Control Workshop on Control Applications of Nonlinear Programming, held in Denver, Colorado, on June 21, 1979. The workshop provided a forum for discussing the application of optimal and nonlinear programming techniques to real-life control problems. The volume covers a variety of specific applications ranging from microprocessor control of automotive engines and optimal design of structures to optimal aircraft trajectories, system identification, and robotics. Comprised of 14 chapters, this book begins by describing the application of nonlinear programming to an optimum design problem coming from mechanical engineering. The reader is then introduced to a nonlinear regulator design for magnetic suspension; optimal control solution of the automotive emission-constrained minimum fuel problem; and nonlinear programming for system identification. Subsequent chapters focus on mathematical programming algorithms based on Lagrangian functions for solving optimal control problems; computer-aided design via optimization; optimal and suboptimal control of oscillating dynamical systems; and the application of nonlinear programming to the solution of optimal output-constrained regulator problems. This monograph will be of interest to mathematicians, computer scientists, and engineers.",

                "description": "The MindBody Problem: A Psychobiological Approach examines the mind-body problem from a psychobiological perspective. It intends to show that the idea of a separate mental entity is not only unwarranted by the available data and the existing psychological models, but collides head-on with the most fundamental ideas of all modern science and is thus a stumbling block to progress. The book abandons ordinary language in favor of the state space language, which is mathematically precise and is shared by science and scientific philosophy. Comprised of 10 chapters, this monograph begins with an overview of the mind-body problem and its main proposed solutions, classified into main genera: psychophysical monism and psychophysical dualism. In particular, ten views on the mind-body problem are analyzed, along with three main varieties of materialism with regards to the problem: eliminative, reductive (or leveling), and emergentist. The discussion then turns to the notion of a concrete or material system, based on the assumption that behavior is an external manifestation of neural processes. Subsequent chapters explore the specific functions of the central nervous system; sensation and perception; behavior and motivation; memory and learning; thinking and knowing; and consciousness and personality. The book also considers sociality and social behavior in animals before concluding with an assessment of a psychological explanation of the mind, with emphasis on dualism and monism. This work will be of interest to students, academicians, practitioners, and investigators in the fields of psychobiology, psychology, neurophysiology, and philosophy.",

The papers explore the principles of internal friction and ultrasonic attenuation in solids such as pure metals and their alloys, ceramics, glasses, and polymers. Structural features such as point defects, dislocations, interfaces, and second phases in solids are discussed, together with the processes by which these features contribute to energy dissipation. Topics covered range from point defect interactions to the establishment of high damping capacity materials for absorption of noise and vibration. This book is comprised of 65 chapters and begins with a brief review of the internal friction peaks observed in face-centered cubic, body-centered cubic, and hexagonal metals due to dislocation relaxation processes. Subsequent chapters focus on the internal friction of cold-worked single crystals of high-purity copper; evidence of Peierls Nabarro stress from microdeformation and attenuation experiments; effects of cyclic deformation and irradiation at low temperature on the internal friction of pure aluminum; and internal friction of high-purity magnesium after plastic deformation. The peaking effect in copper and silver is also analyzed, along with Zener relaxation and dislocation damping. The final chapter is devoted to anelastic behavior of ice at low temperature due to quenched point defects. This monograph will be a valuable resource for metallurgists, physicists, and mechanical engineers.",

Many examples of varying difficulty are worked in the text and exercises are added after each major topic is covered. This book is comprised of five chapters and opens with a discussion on statics, with particular reference to the analysis of systems of forces in three dimensions, along with virtual work, stability, and the catenary. Complicated equilibrium problems are considered. The reader is then introduced to the dynamics of a particle in one and two dimensions, as well as the implications of the Galilean transformation and the general theorems of motion for a system of particles. These theorems are applied to simple cases of the motion of a rigid body. The final chapter on probability examines normal and Poisson distributions, Markov chains, and miscellaneous problems. This monograph will be a useful resource for mathematical pupils and students engaged in private study.",

                "description": "Communication with Extraterrestrial Intelligence is devoted to the concepts and studies related to the science, technology, and observational techniques of communication with extraterrestrial intelligence (CETI). Topics covered range from the search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI) to the theory of interstellar communication; the problem of the origin of life; radio signals from extraterrestrial civilizations; and interstellar communication by neutrino beams. An infinitely expandable space radiotelescope is also described. This book is comprised of 21 chapters and opens with a discussion on the CETI activities of the International Academy of Astronautics (IAA) from 1965 to 1976 and describes the outlook for the IAA CETI Standing Committee. The following chapters sketch the background and rationale for a SETI program; the significance of the detection of signals and of information that may be contained in signals from extraterrestrial civilizations; an extended Drake's equation, the longevity-separation relation, equilibrium, inhomogeneities, and chain formation; and the physical and psychological basis for the belief that a band of frequencies called the water hole is a prime band for SETI. This monograph will appeal to practitioners in the fields of astrophysics, astronomy, planetary formation, exobiology, and biological evolution.",

Topics covered include semiconductor superlattices by MBE; design considerations for MBE systems; periodic doping structure in gallium arsenide (GaAs); nonstoichiometry and carrier concentration control in MBE of compound semiconductors; and MBE techniques for IV-VI optoelectronic devices. The use of MBE to fabricate integrated optical devices and to study semiconductor surface and crystal physics is also considered. This book is comprised of eight chapters and opens with an overview of MBE as a crystal growth technique. The discussion then turns to the deposition of semiconductor superlattices of GaAs by MBE; important factors that must be considered in the design of a MBE system such as flux uniformity, crucible volume, heat shielding, source baffling, and shutters; and control of stoichiometry deviation in MBE growth of compound semiconductors, along with the effects of such deviation on the electronic properties of the grown films. The following chapters focus on the use of MBE techniques for growth of IV-VI optoelectronic devices; for fabrication of integrated optical devices; and for the study of semiconductor surface and crystal physics. The final chapter examines a superlattice consisting of a periodic sequence of ultrathin p- and n-doped semiconductor layers, possibly with intrinsic layers in between. This monograph will be of interest to chemists, physicists, and crystallographers.",

                "description": "Fire Investigation is a practical guide on the basics of fire investigation, with emphasis on ascertaining the cause of fire. Three items that constitute an acceptable cause of fire are highlighted: the source of ignition; the material first ignited; and the defect, act or omission which led to the source of ignition and the material first ignited creating a fire. This book is comprised of 11 chapters and begins with a discussion on sources of ignition and materials first ignited, paying particular attention to three temperature thresholds of combustible substances: flash-point temperature, fire-point temperature, and self-ignition temperature. Examples of sources of ignition are given, including ashes, soot, gas, and naked or open flame. Subsequent chapters deal with the reasons, motives, and methods of arson, as well as timing devices that may be used by arsonists; fire and non-fire explosions; variables that must be taken into account when trying to determine the rate of growth of a fire; and fatality occurring in a fire. The use of photographs and drawings in fire investigation is also considered, along with collection of samples and physical evidence from a fire scene and gathering of information through interviews. The final chapter presents abridged case histories of the six categories of arson. This monograph is written for students, fire officers and investigators, police officers, insurance investigators, and loss adjusters.",

                "subtitle": "An International Discussion",
                "description": "Criteria for Awarding School Leaving Certificates: An International Discussion focuses on formal and official evaluation of school learning and student achievement at the time schooling is discontinued. The book is based on the proceedings of the 1977 Conference of the International Association for Educational Assessment held at the Kenyatta Conference Center in Nairobi, Kenya on May 23-28, 1977. The selection first discusses school leaving examinations as a function of external and educational factors and the terms of reference for school leaving examinations. The book also takes a look at the comparability of grading standards in public examinations in England and Wales; basic assessment issues in school-leaving examination programs; and the case for school leaving examinations in The Netherlands. The text reviews the alternatives to school leaving examinations in Sweden and Brazil, as well as the abolition of final examination, transition from secondary school to higher education, and support structures. The book also ponders on the structure of secondary school system in Austria, Australia, Bermuda, Cyprus, Hong Kong, India, and Ireland. The selection is a dependable reference for readers interested in school learning and student achievement measurements.",
