Composed of various contributions of able researchers, the first part of the book is divided into eight chapters. These chapters cover studies on the physiology, biochemistry, and localization of suspected hypothalamic releasing and inhibiting hormones. Researchers show how hormones react in different controlled environments. The second part of the selection deals with the use of in vitro systems in studying neuroendocrine regulation and steroid hormone action. This part is composed of four chapters wherein the extensive discussion of the processes involved is supported by experiments conducted on animals. The third part of the book covers the use of neurotransmitters in the control of anterior pituitary function. Composed of nine chapters, this part offers a thorough investigation of how neurotransmitters function in different controlled conditions. The fourth part of the selection, which is comprised of eight chapters, focuses on the function of neuropeptides as neurotransmitters. Studies are presented to elaborate the processes how neuropeptides can be converted to act as neurotransmitters. The last part, which covers nine chapters, deals exclusively with research on the effects of endogenous opioid peptides on the neuroendocrine system. The book is a great find for those interested in biochemistry.",

The first five chapters of the book cover the theoretical issues and their conceptualization as the basis for deriving a better understanding of the role of communication in economic development. The major issues for concern are the economic variables that are endogenous to communication planning in the light of rapid advances in communication technologies. Chapters 6-9 deals with the consideration of the role of communication in national development; the international trade theory and communications; and the political economy of information in a changing international economic order. The Japanese experience in focusing on the role of communication in economic development; a model for predicting development benefits from telecommunication investment; and the role of telecommunications in developing countries are also discussed. The text further describes the impact of telecommunication and information in development planning strategy; the opportunity costs in computer conferencing during and for economic development; and the evaluation of the impact of communication on agricultural development in Nepal. The use of economic concepts in communication planning practice is also discussed.",

Topics include modeling and identification; step response and frequency response methods; correlation methods; least squares parameter estimation; and maximum likelihood and prediction error methods. After analyzing the basic ideas concerning the parameter estimation methods, the book elaborates on the asymptotic properties of these methods, and then investigates the application of the methods to particular model structures. The text then discusses the practical aspects of process identification, which includes the usual, general procedures for process identification; selection of input signals and sampling time; offline and on-line identification; comparison of parameter estimation methods; data filtering; model order testing; and model verification. Computer program packages are also discussed. This compilation of tutorial papers aims to introduce the newcomers and non-specialists in this field to some of the basic methods and procedures used for system identification.",

The speeches are grouped in terms of broad phases or periods in the development of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Developments (UNCTAD) work. In most cases they are transcripts from oral presentations and are reproduced more or less as delivered. The volume is organized into five parts. Part I discusses the background against which the specific activities of UNCTAD were being fashioned. Part II presents a diagnosis of the weaknesses besetting the world economic system from the point of view of the developing countries. Part III sets out and explains specific proposals put forward by the UNCTAD secretariat as suitable curative measures. Part IV covers the case for comprehensive, interrelated reform of trading relations; details of the proposed new mechanisms tabled by the secretariat from time to time; and discussion of the characteristics of various individual commodities and their particular importance in the trade of the developing countries. Part V focuses on the role of UNCTAD in the UN system, which entails discussion of the structure of the system as a whole and examination of the nature of international economic negotiations, in both their substantive and procedural aspects.",

This volume contains two parts, wherein the first part deals with training in educational institutions where existing programs are examined. An intercultural competence in bilingual teacher-training programs is presented, and the intercultural communications skills imparted to trainers/teachers are examined. Also addressed are methods to facilitate education on cross-cultural matters to college level students. To put cross-cultural relations in perspective, the topic of American and foreign students in the United States in a university context is discussed, and its implications for theory, future research, and applied intercultural programming are further examined. Part II is concerned with area studies and covers Sub-Sahara Africa, Islamic countries such as Iran, Americans in Australia, Oceania, India, Japan, Canada, and the American retiree abroad. The inclusion of this section shows the types of content that can be included in the preparation of training programs. Trainers and cross-cultural workers, foreign workers, diplomats, foreign students, immigrants, and even transients working and living in a different culture will find this volume a wealthy source of information.",

"description": "The Challenge of Development in the Eighties: Our Response attempts to understand the demands of developing countries in order to render the present world order more equitable and habitable for all. The mosaic of contributions collectively expresses various perspectives and potential support from developed countries to the most challenging and significant human challenge for the remainder of the twentieth century: creating the conditions that will provide for the accelerated and sustained economic development of the vast majority of the human population living in developing countries. The volume contains seven chapters in which representatives of different interest groups assess their own perspectives and motivations as well as their possible contributions to the range of development problems. Key topics discussed include the circumstances in which developing and developed countries have launched upon the negotiation, and implementation, of the text to guide governments during the 1980s; EC policy toward the developing countries; and the contribution of Christians in developed countries. This volume will be useful not only to professionals in education or government concerned with development, but also to the general public in their capacities as citizens, trade-unionists, business-persons and church-goers. This textand reactions to itthus provide a forum in which representatives of different interest groups assess their contribution to the development effort in the eighties.",

"description": "Handbook of Intercultural Training, Volume I: Issues in Theory and Design is a compilation of nine essays dealing with a problem central to today's complex world: \"\"How can people best live and work with others who come from very different cultural backgrounds?\"\" The major focus of the nine essays in this book is the experience of living and working for long periods in other cultures. The book also focuses on other types of cross-cultural experiences, such as majority-minority group relations, training and preparation, and integration. There are analyses of possible experiences people may have, such as stress during adjustments. Other authors in this book address the benefits of intercultural action and integration into a country's educational system. International education is seen to benefit through a greater attention to face-to-face cross-cultural experience. The first seven essays are good descriptions of intercultural behavior and training, while Chapter 8 is an evaluation of cross-cultural training. The last chapter describes the atlas of affective meanings containing 620 concepts from 30 languages/culture communities for use in intercultural training and education. Behavioral and social scientists, trainers and cross-cultural scientists, overseas businessmen, foreign students, diplomats, immigrants, and other people who work in different cultures will find this handbook very helpful.",

Research on the origins of emphysema has acquired more importance than functional diagnostic studies. There are various hypotheses concerning the development of emphysema. Some cases of emphysema are linked to defects in metabolic functions of the vessels while others are linked to a disturbance in repair processes. The papers in this volume are organized into four sections. Section 1 contains studies on the pathology and biochemistry of lung connective tissue. Section 2 deals with animal models. Section 3 on proteases and antiproteases includes studies on the characteristics and identification of biological specimens, and alpha1-proteinase inhibitor. Section 4 takes up the risk factors and therapeutic approaches for lung disease. Other papers in the volume were presented during two roundtable discussions on the biochemistry of connective tissue components in emphysema and therapeutic approaches.",

The importance of dopamine in brain function is reflected in this volume book by the chapters on the neurochemical, behavioral, neuroanatomical, and electrophysiological aspects of dopamine in the central nervous system. Dopamine receptor agonists and antagonists enjoy widespread use in the treatment of various brain disorders. A comprehensive account of research on the actions and mechanisms of action of drugs which affect central dopaminergic pathways is included in this volume. Also presented are accounts of the importance of dopamine and dopamine receptors in the periphery. It is hoped that this volume will be of interest to neuroscientists and pharmacologists, and indeed to all who are interested in clinical and scientific aspects of dopamine and other neurotransmitters.",

Divided into eight sections, the book presents analysis of the dynamics of particles that enter the mouth or nose, which has been considered relative to hygiene standards grounded on total dust. The concerns include the retention of mineral fibers and asbestos in the lungs. The effects on health of coal dusts and fly ash generally common in the energy industries are considered. The text also presents the tests of the carcinogenicity and pathogenicity of dusts and the toxicity of nitrous oxides. The book then focuses on the response of the airways to aerosols, sulfates, gold mine dusts, and organic dusts. Coal mining and its relationship with the progression of pneumoconiosis are also discussed. The book is a great source of information for those who are doing studies in the field of occupational health, particularly on the effects of dust and other related particles on the health of workers.",

"description": "The American People and Science Policy: The Role of Public Attitudes in the Policy Process examines and evaluates the structure and efficacy of public participation in the formulation of science policy in the United States. Organized into 10 chapters, this book first reviews major science policy issues in the 20th century. This text then introduces a stratified model of public policy formulation that appears to fit science policy. The public participation in science policy is also explained. Other chapters explore the science policy agenda; attitudes of both policy leaders and the attentive public on resource and independence issues; and the future of public participation in science policy. Lastly, the formulation of science policy in a democratic society is addressed. This book will be useful for professional students engaged in this field of interest.",
