                "description": "Migraine in Childhood and other Non-Epileptic Paroxysmal Disorders is an eight-chapter book that begins with the definitions, clinical features, and diagnosis of childhood migrane. The book then describes the epidemiology and inheritance of migrane in children; variants of migrane in children; and the equivalents and management of childhood migrane. Subsequent chapters elucidate paroxysmal disorders that may be migraine or may be confused with it; the relationship between migrane and epilepsy; and the pathophysiology and precipitants of migrane. The book will be a great addition to the increasing knowledge about childhood migraine and associated disorders.",

                "description": "Computer Integrated Manufacturing: From Fundamentals to Implementation is based on a course in computer integrated manufacturing (CIM) which is part of the Production Engineering Tripos for postgraduate-level students at Cambridge University. The book is intended to provide a thorough coverage of a difficult subject, and to communicate principles as well as something of current practice. This should give a firm basis of knowledge in CIM, and develop an understanding that will be valid for many years in changing business and manufacturing environments. The book covers CIM and manufacturing systems at a technical level, from description of the conventional \"\"islands of computerization\"\" to the components of CIM architecture. The business objectives of CIM are described, from analysis of the business environment to cost justification and implementation of CIM systems. CIM is seen as a business tool and not as an end in itself. Each individual and company needs to adapt the tools described in this book to best effect. Study of this book should enable postgraduate students and professional engineers to deal confidently with the subject and use CIM techniques profitably.",

                "description": "Butterworths International Medical Reviews, Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics 1: Presystemic Drug Elimination explores the principles of presystemic drug metabolism in human based on animal studies. This book is divided into four sections encompassing 10 chapters that specifically describe the extent of metabolism occurring in the gastrointestinal tract, liver, and lung. Section 1 focuses on presystemic elimination by the gastrointestinal tract. This section discusses the enzymatic biotransformation in the gastrointestinal mucosa and the ability of the microflora to metabolize drugs. Section 2 considers the contribution of the liver to presystemic drug elimination, with a particular emphasis on the physiological factors, which determine the rate of breakdown of drugs in vivo. This section also deals with the effects of hepatic cirrhosis on presystemic drug elimination. Section 3 presents first a brief outline of the knowledge of pulmonary structure and relevant physiology, followed by a discussion on first-pass metabolism of endogenous substrates and drugs across the pulmonary circulation and of environmental chemicals after inhalation. This section also provides the methods for distinguishing between the contribution of the various sites to presystemic drug elimination and the problems associated with attempts to analyze available pharmacokinetic data. This work is an ideal source for clinical pharmacologists and researchers.",

This book is comprised of 10 chapters and begins with an introduction to variability in clinical response to administration of defined drugs, as well as the importance of closely matching dosage to the individual patient's requirement to achieve an optimal response to drug administration. The chapters that follow highlight the pharmacokinetic origin of most variability in the clinical response to drugs, along with the difficulties inherent in predicting the effect of drug administration in an individual patient. The role of genetic and environmental factors, disease, and the concomitant administration of other drugs in determining an individual's response to any therapeutic maneuver is also examined. The last chapter describes two methods of monitoring drug therapy: monitoring drug effects or monitoring the plasma levels of drugs. This monograph will be of interest to practicing clinicians and senior medical students.",

                "description": "A Physiological Approach to Clinical Neurology deals with the mechanism of various neurological symptoms and signs in terms of disordered physiology. Topics covered by this book include pain and other sensations; weakness; the tendon jerk and the stretch reflex; and disordered control of motor neurons. The disorders of basal ganglia and cerebellum are also considered, along with consciousness and unconsciousness; the mechanism of epilepsy; and the relationship between brain and mind. This book is comprised of 11 chapters and begins by introducing the reader to the clinical analysis of sensory and motor disorders. The discussion then turns to the perception of pain and other kinds of sensation; the clinical approach to the problem of weakness; and the clinical significance of the tendon jerk. In the chapters that follow, appraisal of a neurophysiological thought is applied to common neurological disorders such as Parkinson's disease, hemiballismus, epilepsy, and developmental anomalies like platybasia. The last chapter explores the phenomena of mind and its connection to the brain as well as its influence on the body, paying particular attention to perception, memory, and emotion. This monograph is intended for those who are proceeding into the clinical years of a medical course, to those who are studying for senior qualifications in internal medicine or neurology, and to those who are merely curious about the cause of neurological phenomena that they observe daily in their patients.",

The book discusses the fundamental chemical principles involved in metallurgical reactions. Since it is felt that the understanding of quantitative thermodynamics and its application to process metallurgy often prove to be a major problem area for students, example calculations and exercises are included at the end of each section in Chapter 2. The final three chapters deal with the applications of the chemical principles to the extraction and refining of metals, metal melting and recycling, and metallic corrosion. The book is intended as an introductory text for metallurgy students studying for first degrees, TEC higher diplomas and certificates, and Graduateship of the Institution of Metallurgists. It should also be of use to scientists and engineers entering employment in the metallurgical and metal finishing industries or the teaching profession.",

                "description": "Plastics Materials, Fifth Edition, reviews developments of plastics materials. The 1980s saw the introduction of many new materials, some of which were highly specialized in their function, particularly in the field of electronics. The book attempts to take such developments into account. It also highlights the commercial importance of materials discussed and includes representative production or consumption statistics. The book begins by tracing the historical development of plastics materials. This is followed by separate chapters on the production of polymers via addition polymerization, condensation polymerization, and rearrangement polymerization; physical states of aggregation of polymers; factors affecting the thermal and mechanical properties of polymers; the relation of structure to the chemical, electrical, and optical properties of plastics; plastics additives; and principles of plastics processing. Subsequent chapters focus on the properties of individual plastics materials. These include polyethylene, polypropylene, vinyl chloride polymers, poly(vinyl acetate), acrylic plastics, polystyrene, vinyl thermoplastics, polyamides and polyimides, polyacetals and related materials, and polycarbonates.",

                "description": "Dynamic Analysis of Offshore Structures appraises offshore structures, particularly the major sources of uncertainty in the design process. The book explains the fundamentals of probabilistic processes, the theory or analysis of sea states, and the random-vibration approach to structural response. The text describes the hydrodynamics of water waves, wave forecasting, and the statistical parameters associated with sea-states. The investigator can use Morison's equation to calculate the impact of wave forces acting on slender members such as on lattice-type structures. Or he can employ the diffraction theory to calculate wave forces acting on large-diameter bodies such as concrete gravity-type structures. Other environmental forces he should be concerned with are the effects of currents and winds. The book examines the theory of vibration (including the spectral approach), the theory of vibration on multi-degree-of-freedom structures, matrix analysis of structural response, problems of fatigue, and soil-structure interaction. The book notes the importance of the method of analysis used, with emphasis on the following: dynamic analysis, frequency domain, and linearization of drag. Two types of analysis follow linearization of drag: deterministic analysis (applied in a series of design waves which uses the long-term exceedance diagram for fatigue); or probabilistic analysis (used to study the behavior of the structure during the extreme design storm and its long term behavior for a range of sea states). The book can prove useful for structural, civil, or maritime engineers, as well as for students in one-year courses in offshore structure analysis at the postgraduate or final-year undergraduate level.",

                "description": "Ethylene and Plant Development documents the Proceedings of the Thirty-ninth University of Nottingham Easter School in Agricultural Science, held at Sutton Bonington on 26-30 March 1984. The conference was entitled \"\"Ethylene and Plant Development\"\" and included a workshop, organized in conjunction with the Association of Applied Biologists, on the \"\"Practical control of ethylene in fruit, vegetables, and flowers.\"\" This volume contains a mixture of review and research papers thus giving a thorough coverage on the subject. The workshop reviewed the practical methods and advantages of either applying ethylene to, or removing ethylene from, various commercial products. The rest of the conference dealt with the more fundamental aspects of ethylene synthesis and action during the developmental processes in which the gas is active. Emphasis was particularly placed on the effects of ethylene on gene expression and cell development since advances in these areas may eventually lead to a more scientifically-based control of ethylene levels and action within the plant.",

A large part of this book discusses the nervous system and the way certain drugs operate and affect it. The first part of this book covers the importance of having a firm understanding of the organ system, especially the nervous system. Understanding the systems is the initial step in learning how a drug affects the body, both internally and externally. This book also clarifies that a drug's impact occurs when it comes in contact with a chemical component of the body (enzymes, hormones, membranes, etc.). The next sections of this book discuss miscellaneous topics of the human anatomy, such as the brain, eyes, lungs, and various muscles. This edition also explains how a drug acts on each of those body parts. This book serves as a great reference to students affiliated in the anatomy, biology, pharmacy, and related fields.",

                "description": "Drug Therapy During Pregnancy is a collection of papers dealing with the risks and benefits of drug treatment for both mother and fetus. One paper notes that the total use of medication during pregnancy in the Netherlands has decreased from 82.7 % to 71.7 %. The paper also points out the lack of a relationship between the number or type of congenital anomalies and the use of medication. Another paper assesses fetal drug exposure in two ways: firstly, through the physicochemical characteristics of the drug and the way it is handled by the mother in order to estimate placental passage and fetal exposure. Secondly, through the utilization of pharmacokinetic models estimating the probable time course of drug concentrations in the feto-maternal unit. One paper investigates the effects of hypertension during pregnancy, in which the etiology of hypertension, a group of disorders with one common abnormality, remains unsolved with a clinical diagnosis that is not always accurate. Treatment differs widely depending on the type: chronic hypertension, albuminuric hypertension, and hypertensive crises during pregnancy. One paper suggests that to prove any environmental exposure to a particular substance affecting pregnancy, the exact timing of exposure must be established, large samples are necessary, possibly on a national or international scale. The paper cites as example the four-year documentation period of the 50% to 80% incidence of malformations due to thalidomide. General medicine practitioners, obstetricians, gynecologists, and researchers dealing with pharmacology, pharmocokinetics, toxicology, or embryology will find the collection valuable.",

This book explores the molecular genetics of neurological disease such as muscular dystrophy, Joseph disease, and Huntington's disease, along with the mitochondrial genes implicated in such conditions. This text is comprised of 18 chapters and begins by introducing the reader to the basic principles and methods of molecular genetic techniques used in the diagnosis of neurological disease. Attention then turns to several aspects of genetic expression in the brain, including the extent to which the genome is expressed in the brain. The next chapter focuses on the visualization of polyadenylated messenger RNAs in individual cells in mammalian brain using in situ hybridization techniques, combined with immunohistochemical localization of specific proteins and neuropeptides implicated in diseases such as Alzheimer dementia. This book also discusses the molecular biology of chemical synaptic neurotransmission; proteins involved in the regulation of nervous system development; and gene expression in skeletal muscle. This text then concludes with a summary of the \"\"neurological gene map\"\" as it stands in the latter part of 1987. This book is intended for physicians who grapple with the problems of neurological disorders on a daily basis, including neurologists, neurologists in training, and those in related fields such as neurosurgery, internal medicine, psychiatry, and rehabilitation medicine.",

                "subtitle": "A Basis for Improvement",
                "description": "The Pea Crop: A Basis for Improvement documents the proceedings of the University of Nottingham 40th Easter School in Agricultural Science, held at the School of Agriculture, Sutton Bonington, 2-6 April 1984. The aim of the conference was to formulate a basis for improving the pea crop by bringing together international scientists to present research findings and review published work on a wide range of subject areas encompassing pea genetics, plant breeding, agronomy, crop and plant physiology, utilization, and marketing. This volume contains 42 papers organized into 10 parts. Part I discusses the production, research and development, and future prospects of the pea crop. The papers in Part II focus on the need to improve the pea crop. Part III examines the genetic aspects of improved pea crop production. Part IV deals with crop improvement techniques. The studies in Part V are devoted to the impact of the environment on crop growth. Part VI covers diseases, pests, and weed control while Part VII presents plant physiological studies. Part VIII takes up pea fruit and seed development. Part IX focuses on Rhizobium while Part X discusses the processing, marketing, and consumption of peas.",
