                "name": "Computational Hydraulics",
                "subtitle": "",
                "description": "Computational Hydraulics provides an introduction to computational techniques for hydraulic and fluid flow engineers. It combines classical hydraulics with new methods such as finite elements and boundary elements, which are both presented in a matrix formulation. The most interesting feature of the book is the integrated treatment given to the theoretical and computing aspects of numerical methods. The format presents a series of complete computer programs, for linear and non-linear pipe network analysis, depth flow computations, and finite and boundary elements for Laplace equations. The programs, which are written in standard FORTRAN, are self-contained and easy to implement in any computer. The book is the product of several years' experience in teaching and research at undergraduate and post-graduate level and can be used to offer a self-contained course on Computational Hydraulics for final year or M.Sc. Engineering students. The authors hope that this book will make practicing hydraulic engineers more aware of modern computer techniques and be useful in teaching them to the next generation.",

                "description": "Successful Business Computing offers a practical guide to the selection and use of a computer system. It helps identify those factors that need to be assessed in buying computer equipment and the associated computing instructions, called computer programs or software. It is a management manual and not a technical treatise on computing theory, or advanced computing. The book is organized into three main parts. Part 1 helps the reader to recognize the symptoms and assess needs. It identifies some of the reasons which prompt the purchase of computer systems and the areas of the organization which can benefit. It explains a method of pinpointing the specific application areas. It emphasizes the need for a computing policy within the organization; specifies some significant policy issues; and identifies sources of external help. Part 2 guides the reader through the buying cycle, identifying the major activities and providing guidelines for the evaluation of the systems proposed. Part 3 explains the constituents of a computer system and provides a glossary of terms. This book is intended for the businessman or executive looking for guidelines on how best to handle the task of acquiring a computer system. It can also provide students with an introduction to the application of computers and computer systems in business and commerce.",

                "description": "BASIC Fluid Mechanics combines the application of BASIC programming with fluid mechanics. Topics covered in this book include the fundamentals of the BASIC computer language, properties of fluids, fluid statics, kinematics, and conservation of energy. Force and momentum, viscous flow, flow measurement, and dimensional analysis and similarity are also considered. This book is comprised of nine chapters and begins with a brief introduction to the application of BASIC. The discussion then turns to the various properties of a fluid and the differences between fluids and solids. The chapters that follow explore fluid statics, kinematics, and conservation of energy. The Euler and Bernoulli equations that are used to express the principle of conservation of energy when applied to fluids are highlighted, and calculations for force and momentum are presented. The text also considers laminar flow between parallel plates and in circular tubes, as well as the techniques for measuring flow. The final chapter describes the principles of dimensional analysis and similarity methods. Worked examples developing programs for the solution of typical problems are provided at the end of each chapter. This monograph will be useful to students in an undergraduate program and practicing engineers who are attempting to get to grips with modern computational procedures.",

Reliability as a function of time is discussed, along with systems modeling, predicting and estimating reliability, and quality assurance. This book is comprised of seven chapters and begins with a brief introduction to the BASIC computer language used in the programs in the text. The second chapter describes the way reliability is taken into account in different parts of the development cycle, while the third chapter discusses the basic concepts of reliability as a function of time, failure rate, and some basic statistical concepts. The fourth chapter deals with the modeling of complex systems and related topics such as availability and maintainability. The fifth chapter describes the activities that can go on early in the development cycle, while the sixth chapter gives some of the techniques that can be used to analyze data generated during development or later in the cycle when equipment is in use. The final chapter offers a brief look at quality assurance and acquaints the reader with the concepts involved, using inspection by attributes to introduce the ideas. This monograph is intended for engineers or managers with a particular interest in reliability, as well as for engineering undergraduates.",

                "description": "Hormone Action in Plant Development - A Critical Appraisal documents the proceedings of the Tenth Long Ashton Symposium, September 1986. The symposium was convened to assess the evidence for and against the view that plant hormones are endogenous regulators of plant development. The meeting also aimed to focus on and assess promising strategies for future research. The symposium opened with the Douglas Wills Lecture, given by Professor Carl Leopold. In many respects, progress in research on animal hormones seems greater than in the plant sciences and there may well be merit in following progress in animal hormone research as suggested by Professor Leopold. The symposium was comprised of four sessions. The introductory session considered the coordinating role of hormones in plant growth and development, and focused on hormone action at the molecular level, including their binding to receptors and their control of gene expression. The next two sessions embraced contributions on the experimental manipulation of development by genetic (notably by biochemical mutants), chemical (for example, with gibberellin/biosynthesis inhibitors), and environmental (including drought stress) means. All these approaches consolidated the central importance of hormones in plant growth. In the final session, three speakers suggested some promising avenues for future research into the physiology, biochemistry, and molecular biology of plant hormones.",

                "description": "Central Venous Pressure: Its Clinical Use and Role in Cardiovascular Dynamics focuses on the clinical applications of central venous pressure and the role it plays in cardiovascular dynamics. This book discusses the clinical need to measure central venous pressure, describes the apparatus and its use, and considers the interpretation of the measurements. This text is comprised of five chapters divided into two sections and begins by introducing the reader to the cardiovascular system and its function; the significance of the central venous pressure in cardiovascular dynamics; and the interaction between venous return and cardiac function. The discussion then turns to the principles and techniques of measuring cardiac output and evaluation of central venous pressure. Two factors that affect the normal range, the intrathoracic pressure and the reference level, are highlighted. The final chapter explains the use of the central venous or right atrial pressure in clinical practice to detect changes in blood volume and testing of the equivocal level of central venous pressure using a fluid load or isoprenaline. This book is intended for physiologists and clinicians, including surgeons and anesthesiologists.",

                "description": "Programming for Microprocessors deals with the basics of programming for microprocessors and contains practical aids to programming. Topics covered range from assembly language and microprocessor design to the Motorola 6800, programming techniques, control of peripheral devices, and high-level languages. Emphasis is given to the computer-like aspects of microprocessors. This text is comprised of 12 chapters; the first of which provides a general overview of microprocessors, differences between hardwired and programmed devices, and different kinds of microprocessors. The reader is then introduced to the basic types of information inside a microprocessor, including Boolean information, numerical information, character codes, and the machine code. The chapters that follow focus on the intellectual and practical tools that the designer of a microprocessor system will need. The basic structure of a microprocessor is analyzed, with particular reference to a simple hypothetical computer and some programs for this machine. This book also discusses assembly language; some of the features that give microprocessors their flexibility as well as generality and power; and the Motorola 6800 microprocessor as an example of machine architecture. Some programming techniques, high-level languages for writing programs, and the problem of bringing the hardware and software together are highlighted. This book will be useful to computer programmers, computer scientists, and electronic engineers.",

                "description": "Dynamics of Offshore Structures provides an integrated treatment of the main subject areas that contribute to the design, construction, installation, and operation of fixed and floating offshore structures. The book begins with an overview of offshore oil and gas development and offshore structures. Separate chapters follow on the ocean environment; basic fluid mechanics; gravity wave theories; fluid loading on offshore structures; hydrostatics and dynamic response of floating bodies; and model testing of offshore structures. This book is prepared with particular emphasis on the fundamentals of oceanography, basic fluid mechanics, wave theory, hydrodynamics, naval architecture, and structural analysis to meet the needs of students reading ocean engineering or naval architecture, at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Basic equations and theoretical results are derived in a rigorous manner but sections on model testing, full-scale measurements, design, and certification are also induced to ensure that the book is of value to professional engineers seeking a balanced treatment of fundamental and practical issues.",

                "description": "Methods of Treatment of Unstable Ground focuses on the methods of treatment that have been adopted by engineers in their attempts to make unstable ground usable. These methods are meant to stabilize ground, either temporarily as in ground-water lowering or freezing techniques, or permanently as in grouting. This book is comprised of 11 chapters. The first of which reviews some of the modern techniques in addressing problems caused by unstable ground, including those caused by water in excavations, instability of natural or excavated slopes, the settlement of structures on soft or loose soils, and subsidence due to extraction of minerals from the ground. These techniques range from ground-water lowering to the use of an impermeable barrier around the excavation to prevent inflow and at the same time maintain the surrounding water table at its normal level. Attention then turns to the use of electro-osmosis and electrochemical stabilization in ground engineering; control of groundwater by excluding it through grouting; and fundamental conditions governing the penetration of grouts. The remaining chapters explore grout selection based on engineering performance; ground conditions in mining areas; clay grouting and alluvial grouting; and ground freezing. Finally, the use of cement to stabilize soil and of vibroflotation to improve poor ground below foundations of structures is described. This book should prove useful to engineers engaged in ground engineering.",

During this 5-year period knowledge of environment-development relationships has grown considerably, and this evolving perception can be discerned in his statements spanning those years. Taken together, the common thread binding all the speeches is the fact that long-term development can only be achieved through sound environmental management, that is, sustainable development, which is the title of this book. The speeches included in this volume were delivered in the author's capacity as the Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). They thus cover primarily broad areas of interest of UNEP's programs and policies. Key topics discussed include environmental protection; disarmament and the environment; environmental information for engineers; the impact of human settlements on the environment; environmental management in the Gulf; the causes, effects, and prevention of desertification; and the environmental impact assessment process.",

                "description": "Electrical Contracting, Second Edition is a nine-chapter text guide for the greater efficiency in planning and completing installations for the design, installation and control of electrical contracts. This book starts with a general overview of the efficient cabling and techniques that must be employed for safe wiring design, as well as the cost estimation of the complete electrical contract. The subsequent chapters are devoted to other electrical contracting requirements, including electronic motor control, lighting, and electricity tariffs. A chapter focuses on the IEE Wiring Regulations and Statutory Regulations to ensure compliance to the fundamental requirements for safety. The discussion then shifts to visual inspection and testing in accordance with the IEE Wiring Regulations. The last chapter describes the special role of the Joint Industrial Council for Electrical Installation Contracting in introducing a rational and equitable incomes policy into the industry. This text includes many worked examples and illustrations to demonstrate how the technical and commercial aspects are put into practice.",

This book contains 5 chapters that cover the use of BASIC programming language in hydrodynamic problems and some programs with graphic output, as well as some simple finite difference, finite element and boundary element programs. After a brief introduction to BASIC programming, this book goes discussing the fundamentals of potential flow theory that will be used to calculate flows, which can be regarded as frictionless. These topics are followed by a presentation of some analytical expressions for potential flows. Chapter 3 outlines the computer based methods for solving problems within these flows, while Chapter 4 highlights some potential flow methods to the solution of groundwater flows. Exact solutions are also provided for comparison with the computer methods. Lastly, Chapter 5 considers free surface flows, such as linear waves and flows from jets. This work will be of value to engineers, designers, and computer programmers and scientists who are interested in computer application to hydrodynamics field.",

                "description": "Mechanical Seals, Third Edition is a source of practical information on the design and use of mechanical seals. Topics range from design fundamentals and test rigs to leakage, wear, friction and power, reliability, and special designs. This text is comprised of nine chapters; the first of which gives a general overview of seals, including various types of seals and their applications. Attention then turns to the fundamentals of seal design, with emphasis on six requirements that must be considered: sealing effectiveness, length of life, reliability, power consumption, space requirements, and cost effectiveness. The next chapter is devoted to test rigs used to establish the effect of the various seal parameters on the behavior of face seals. Special test rigs used to establish leakage, wear, friction losses, and temperature distributions for various material combinations, rubbing speeds, pressures, fluid media, and temperatures are highlighted. The following chapters explain primary leakage through the seal gap between the faces of the seals; factors that contribute to seal wear; friction and power of a mechanical seal; relationship of leakage to wear and friction of a balanced face seal; and importance of seal reliability and operating safety. The final chapter explores particularly interesting sealing problems together with the use of special accessories such as heat exchangers; magnetic and cyclone separators; and techniques such as cooling and auxiliary circulation. This book will be useful to mechanical engineers as well as seal designers and seal users.",
