"description": "Finite Element Solution of Boundary Value Problems: Theory and Computation provides an introduction to both the theoretical and computational aspects of the finite element method for solving boundary value problems for partial differential equations. This book is composed of seven chapters and begins with surveys of the two kinds of preconditioning techniques, one based on the symmetric successive overrelaxation iterative method for solving a system of equations and a form of incomplete factorization. The subsequent chapters deal with the concepts from functional analysis of boundary value problems. These topics are followed by discussions of the Ritz method, which minimizes the quadratic functional associated with a given boundary value problem over some finite-dimensional subspace of the original space of functions. Other chapters are devoted to direct methods, including Gaussian elimination and related methods, for solving a system of linear algebraic equations. The final chapter continues the analysis of preconditioned conjugate gradient methods, concentrating on applications to finite element problems. This chapter also looks into the techniques for reducing rounding errors in the iterative solution of finite element equations. This book will be of value to advanced undergraduates and graduates in the areas of numerical analysis, mathematics, and computer science, as well as for theoretically inclined workers in engineering and the physical sciences.",

"description": "Radiation Dosimetry, Second Edition, Volume I: Fundamentals describes the significant aspects and fundamentals of radiation dosimetry. This books deals with the concepts and units of dosimetry; special problems of energy deposition in the microscopic domain; interactions of x and y rays, charged particles, and neutrons with matter; mathematical theory of radiation fields; ionization; and cavity-chamber theory. Other topics discussed include the LET distributions, Compton and photoelectric effect, pair production by photons, dosimetry principles, and interactions of neutrons with tissue elements. The calculation of neutron dose in large objects; ionization in gases, liquids, and solids; and cavity dimensions comparable with the electron ranges are also deliberated. This publication likewise covers the measurement of absorbed dose and exposure and application of cavity theory to devices other than the ionization chamber. This volume is a valuable reference for radiation workers, but is also beneficial to students and researchers interested in radiation dosimetry.",

The book first offers information on introductory examples, permutations and combinations, and the inclusion-exclusion principle. Discussions focus on some applications of the inclusion-exclusion principle, derangements, calculus of sets, permutations, combinations, Stirling's formula, binomial theorem, regions of a plane, chromatic polynomials, and a random walk. The text then examines linear equations with unit coefficients, recurrence relations, and generating functions. Topics include derivatives and differential equations, solution of difference equations by means of generating functions, recurrence relations, summation method, difference methods, combinations with repetitions, solutions bounded below, and solutions bounded above and below. The publication takes a look at generating functions and difference equations, ramifications of the binomial theorem, finite structures, coloring problems, maps on a sphere, and geometry of the plane. The manuscript is a valuable reference for researchers interested in combinatorics.",

This book provides an approach to the study of perception that attempts to be both general and rigorous. Organized into 10 chapters, this book begins with an overview of the structure of perceptual capacity. This text then presents the relationship between observers and Turing machines. Other chapters provide a formal framework in which to describe an observer and its objects of perception, and then develop from this framework a perceptual dynamics. This book discusses as well the conditions in which an observer may be said to perceive truly and discusses how stabilities in perceptual dynamics might permit the genesis of higher level observers. The final chapter deals with the relationship between the formalisms of quantum mechanics and observer mechanics. This book is a valuable resource for physicists, psychophysicists, philosophers, cognitive scientists, and perceptual psychologists.",

This book discusses the principle of exchange of stability; weak-invariance and rest points in control systems; local controllability in nonlinear systems; and unitary treatment of various types of systems in stability-theory. The optimization of structural geometry; dispersal manifolds in partial differential games; remarks on existence theorems for Pareto optimality; and stability of solutions bifurcating from steady or periodic solutions are also elaborated. This compilation likewise covers the linear neutral functional differential equations on a Banach space; radiation reaction in electrodynamics; and buckling of cylindrical shells with small curvature. This publication is beneficial to students and researchers working on dynamical systems.",

This book presents the relevance of the mathematical concepts, which are also demonstrated in numerous exercises. Organized into 10 chapters, this book begins with an overview of the study of logic to understand the nature of mathematics. This text then discusses mathematics as a system of structure or as a collection of substructures. Other chapters consider the four essential components in a mathematical or logical system or structure, namely, undefined terms, defined terms, postulates, and theorems. This book discusses as well several principles used in numeration systems and provides examples of some numeration systems that are in use to illustrate these principles. The final chapter deals with the classification of certain mathematical systems as groups, fields, or rings to demonstrate some abstract mathematics. This book is a valuable resource for students and teachers in elementary mathematics.",

The papers review advances in the qualitative-analytic theory of differential equations and highlight three broad areas: analytic theory (singular perturbations), qualitative theory (boundary value problems), and mathematical control theory (variational methods). Comprised of 82 chapters, this book begins with a discussion on continuous extensions, their construction, and their application in the theory of differential equations. The reader is then introduced to an approach to boundary control of partial differential equations based on the theory of semigroups of operators; lower closure and existence theorems in optimal control; and a nonlinear oscillation theorem. Subsequent chapters focus on matrices of rational functions; asymptotic integration of linear differential systems; solutions near bifurcated steady states; and geometric views in existence theory. This monograph will be of interest to students and instructors of mathematics.",

Some applications of probability, game theory, and Markov chains are given. Each chapter includes exercises, and each set begins with basic computational \"drill\" problems and then progresses to problems with more substance. Comprised of 10 chapters, this book begins with exercises related to set theory and concepts such as the union and intersection of sets. Exercises on Cartesian coordinate systems and graphs as well as linear programming from a geometric and algebraic point of view are then given. Subsequent chapters deal with matrices, the solution of linear systems, and applications; the simplex method for solving linear programming problems; and probability and probability models for finite sample spaces as well as permutations, combinations, and counting methods. Basic concepts in statistics are also considered, along with the mathematics of finance. Some applications of probability, game theory, and Markov chains are also considered. This monograph is intended for students and instructors of applied mathematics.",

The fundamentals of measure and integration theory are discussed, along with the interplay between measure theory and topology. Comprised of four chapters, this book begins with an overview of the basic concepts of the theory of measure and integration as a prelude to the study of probability, harmonic analysis, linear space theory, and other areas of mathematics. The reader is then introduced to a variety of applications of the basic integration theory developed in the previous chapter, with particular reference to the Radon-Nikodym theorem. The third chapter is devoted to functional analysis, with emphasis on various structures that can be defined on vector spaces. The final chapter considers the connection between measure theory and topology and looks at a result that is a companion to the monotone class theorem, together with the Daniell integral and measures on topological spaces. The book concludes with an assessment of measures on uncountably infinite product spaces and the weak convergence of measures. This book is intended for mathematics majors, most likely seniors or beginning graduate students, and students of engineering and physics who use measure theory or functional analysis in their work.",
