                "description": "Science Policy Perspectives: USA-Japan is a collection of papers from the \"Second Seminar on Science Policy\" under the U.S.-Japan Cooperative Science Program held in Hawaii in August 1981. This collection presents an exchange of ideas between the Japan and the United States on each other's science policies. One paper confers the belief that basic and applied scientific research in America are fundamentally distinct. Political and administrative considerations influence perceptions of basic and applied research. Those responsible for framing and implementing science policies should have an alternative, two-dimensional view where basic and applied science does not exclude each other. In Japan, basic research is done in universities, applied research is made in national research institutes, while research and development is carried out by the private sector. Other papers address the policies of resource allocation in basic and applied research in the two countries, the practices of their respective governments, the cooperation of universities and industry, as well as patent policies for government supported research. This collection can prove useful for engineers, inventors, investigators in both government and privately funded research, and policy makers in government dealing with scientific research and development.",

                "description": "Electron Impact Phenomena and the Properties of Gaseous Ions, Revised Edition deals with data pertaining to electron impact and to molecular gaseous ionic phenomena. This book discusses electron impact phenomena in gases at low pressure that involve low-energy electrons, which result in ion formation. The text also describes the use of mass spectrometers in electron impact studies and the degree of accuracy obtained when measuring electron impact energies. This book also reviews relatively low speed electrons and the transitions that result in the ionization of the atomic system. This text then discusses diatomic molecules whose mass spectra can be interpreted using the Franck-Condon principle. This selection also presents some examples of ions in solution that resemble the gaseous ions formed by electron impacts. The energies of these gaseous ions can be the key to understanding the mechanisms of ionic reactions. These examples include the olefin addition reactions and catalytic cracking. This text will prove invaluable for research chemists, students, and professors in chemistry and related fields such as organic chemistry and electrochemistry.",

                "description": "Elementary Functions and Analytic Geometry is an introduction to college mathematics, with emphasis on elementary functions and analytic geometry. It aims to provide a working knowledge of basic functions (polynomial, rational, exponential, logarithmic, and trigonometric); graphing techniques and the numerical aspects and applications of functions; two- and three-dimensional vector methods; and complex numbers, mathematical induction, and the binomial theorem. Comprised of 13 chapters, this book begins with a discussion on functions and graphs, paying particular attention to quantities measured in the real number system. The next chapter deals with linear and quadratic functions as well as some of their applications. Tips on graphing are offered. Subsequent chapters focus on polynomial functions, along with graphs of factored polynomials; rational functions; exponential and logarithm functions; and trigonometric functions. Identities and inverse functions, vectors, and trigonometry are also explored, together with complex numbers and solid analytic geometry. The book concludes by considering mathematical induction, binomial coefficients, and the binomial theorem. This monograph will be a useful resource for undergraduate students of mathematics and algebra.",

                "description": "Going North: Migration of Blacks and Whites from the South, 19001950 discusses the historical, demographic, sociological, and economic reasons for black and white migrations. The book explains the transition from a rural, extractive economy to an urban, industrial and service economy, with emphasis on the effects on the Southern rural population. After the Civil War, emerging business concerns became politically and economically significant, making the South a source for needed resources. 1930 was a defining year. Before 1930, migration reflected the growth and contraction of cotton agriculture in the South. After 1930, the transition from a tenant, labor-intensive cotton agriculture economy to a capitalist machine-driven economy caused the black and white migration to the north. American development was not a simple processit shows how northern business interests defeated southern planters. This transformation has created a permanent underclass in society that can be found in the cities of the South, North, and Midwest regions of America today. Sociologists, economists, academicians doing sociological research, and students of U.S. history can benefit from reading the book.",

One paper describes the role of protein-lipid interactions in the organization and function of biomembranes. Section III considers the kinetics and thermodynamics of the calcium pumping mechanism, particularly the binding of ligands to calcium ATPase of the sarcoplasmic reticulum, as well as the conformational changes of the sarcoplasmic reticulum Ca-ATPase induced by substrate binding and phosphorylation. A paper gives the results of several experimental techniques in substrates binding assays employing millipore filters and a thermostated filtration apparatus. Section IV describes the calcium ions release process such as rapid and reversible actions, while Section V discusses the regulation of calcium ions uptake and release in the ion channel vesicles. This book can be helpful for researchers in biophysical engineering, pharmacologists, and scientists in the fields of biochemistry and biophysics.",

                "description": "Calculus with Analytic Geometry presents the essentials of calculus with analytic geometry. The emphasis is on how to set up and solve calculus problems, that is, how to apply calculus. The initial approach to each topic is intuitive, numerical, and motivated by examples, with theory kept to a bare minimum. Later, after much experience in the use of the topic, an appropriate amount of theory is presented. Comprised of 18 chapters, this book begins with a review of some basic pre-calculus algebra and analytic geometry, paying particular attention to functions and graphs. The reader is then introduced to derivatives and applications of differentiation; exponential and trigonometric functions; and techniques and applications of integration. Subsequent chapters deal with inverse functions, plane analytic geometry, and approximation as well as convergence, and power series. In addition, the book considers space geometry and vectors; vector functions and curves; higher partials and applications; and double and multiple integrals. This monograph will be a useful resource for undergraduate students of mathematics and algebra.",

This book consists of three partsbasic principles, constitutive equations for simple materials, and methods of solution. Part I of this publication is devoted to a discussion of basic principles irrespective of material geometry and constitution that are valid for all kinds of substances, including composites. The geometrical notions, kinematics, balance laws, and thermodynamics of continua are also deliberated. Part II focuses on materials consisting of a single substance, followed by a general theory of constitutive equations and special types of bodies. The thermoelastic solids, thermoviscous fluids, and memory-dependent materials are likewise considered. Part III is devoted to a discussion of a variety of nonlinear and linear problems, as well as nonlinear deformations of elastic solids, viscometric fluids, singular surfaces and waves, and complex function technique. This volume is a good source for researchers and students conducting work on the continuum mechanics of single-substance bodies.",

Chapter I focuses on the analysis of Jacquet-Langlands methods and the Einstein series and Langlands so-called Euler products. This chapter explains how local and global zeta-integrals are used to prove the analytic continuation and functional equations of the automorphic L-functions attached to GL(2). Chapter II deals with the developments and refinements of the zeta-inetgrals for GL(n). Chapter III describes the results for the L-functions L (s, ?, r), which are considered in the constant terms of Einstein series for some quasisplit reductive group. This book will be of value to undergraduate and graduate mathematics students.",

                "description": "Glaciated Coasts is a collection of articles that deals with shoreline morphologies of glaciated coasts and the processes that formed these coastlines in North America. This book examines nonsandy shorelines and covers a range of geologic and geographic coastal settings in a northern-southern order. This text investigates and compares the glaciated northern shorelines. These shorelines north of the glacial limit are mostly of the primary form in different stages of modification by marine agents. Shorelines are associated with embayments; baymouth barriers in turn enclose embayments. This book describes beaches as having coarse or mixed sediment populations. Most beaches worldwide have gravel clasts that have been rounded and sorted by marine processes. In the southeastern coast of Alaska, active tectonics on a mountainous shoreline is evident. The region also shows emergent and submerging shorelines with a glacial imprint undergoing formation by modern processes. This book also gives examples of gravel beach environments in various coastal settings. This book can prove useful for students of meteorology, oceanography as well as to marine ecologists and biologists. It can also benefit readers whose interest lie with coastal environment or with the general earth sciences.",

The focus of study is the Twin Cities of Minneapolis-St. Paul. The book discusses social institutions that support an economy of donative transfers, and how these institutions influence who gives, who gets, and who gives to whom. Emphasis is on the belief system that has influence over corporate contributions, boundary-spanning agency roles that have an active role in reducing transactional costs, and selective incentives that have been used to elicit participation. The text also analyzes the volume of corporate contributions in relation to the market position held by the firm and the social position of the executives in the community. Each firm has different rationalizations for its contributions. The role of the agencies has also developed to overcome some uncertainties present in the corporation's contributing to nonprofits organizations. The text focuses on the production of collective goods, the peer-group which ensures participation in the collective enterprise, the institutionalization and socialization of values, as well as, the interaction of various agency roles. The book can prove valuable for social scientists, for heads of non-profit organizations, for officials of social and welfare departments of local governments, or for political scientists, economists, and historians.",

                "name": "The Economics of Housing Vouchers",
                "subtitle": "",
                "description": "The Economics of Housing Vouchers is a seven-chapter text that examines the housing choices of low-income families in two metropolitan areas, namely, Phoenix and Pittsburgh. Some of these households are offered a novel kind of housing subsidy, including a housing allowance or housing voucher, in an experimental framework designed to test this approach to demand-side housing assistance. Chapter 1 presents an overview of U.S. housing programs and the dimensions of the U.S. housing problem. Chapter 2 provides a simple microeconomic model that conceptualizes household behavior, as well as a summary of some of the extant evidence on housing demand. This chapter also estimates the housing demand models for the low-income population in the Demand Experiment, using housing expenditures to measure housing. Chapter 3 applies a hedonic index of housing services that abstracts from particular characteristics of the household or landlord that may affect rent and attempts to measure housing in a more objective manner. Chapter 4 describes a model of household behavior that leads to the methodology for estimating experimental effects. Chapter 5 repeats the analysis for Minimum Rent households, while Chapter 6 examines the effect of both kinds of Housing Gap allowance payment on the consumption of housing services. Lastly, Chapter 7 focuses on the implications of the experimental findings for housing policy. This chapter compares a housing allowance strategy with two other approaches, namely, a pure income-transfer approach and a construction-oriented approach. This book is of value to workers in housing policy, including economists, regional and other social scientists in academia, housing analysts, the Congress, housing lobby groups, and state and local government housing officials.",

The book discusses instrumentation and control circuits that are part of circuit designs. The text reviews the organization of electronics as structural (what it is), causal (what it does), and functional (what it is for). The text also explains circuit analyses and the nature of design. The book then describes some basic amplified circuits and commonly used procedures in analyzing them using tests of amplification, input resistance, and output resistance. The text then explains the feedback circuitssimilar to mathematical recursion or to iterative loops in computer software programs. The book also explains high performance amplification in analog-to-digital converters, or vice versa, and the use of composite topologies to improve performance. The text then enumerates various other signal-processing functions considered as part of analog circuit design. The monograph is helpful for radio technicians, circuit designers, instrumentation specialists, and students in electronics.",

This collection deals with urban entomology with emphasis on insects, insect-plant relationships, and arthropods in the urban environments. One paper examines the causes why certain species manage to survive in an urban environment while others do not. The book cites one examplethe Rothamsted insect surveyand analyzes the pressures of development in the surrounding land area. One paper addresses the educational and esthetic value of an insect-plant relationship in an ever expanding development of urban spaces. Another paper shows the value and benefit of a scientific investment in urban agriculturedefined as small-scale agriculture in urban areasas contributing to food crops. Some papers also examine the use of insecticides and technology transfer in the management of urban pest control. This book will be valuable for entomologists, urban planners and developers, environmentalists, and for general readers residing in metropolitan areas.",

Another paper discusses the relationship between connectivity and tolerance of the immune network. This paper then suggests the possibility that autoimmunity arises because self-reactive clones are inadequately connected to the network. Another paper reviews the cell-mediated responses in the synovial fluids, as well as the interaction of rheumatoid arthritis synovial fluid dendritic cells and T lymphocytes. The book also examines why attempts for protective immunity to the HIV virus have not been successful. One article then discusses the goals of immunologic intervention in autoimmune disease by using an approach involving the cellular and cytokine targets and their deployment. "description": "The Economic Theory of Price Indices: Two Essays on the Effects of Taste, Quality, and Technological Change is concerned with the effects of consumer taste, product quality, and technological change on price indices. Special attention is paid on technological change in the simple two-sector production model of Rybczynski and Uzawa. The effects of the general case of changing factor supplies and factor-augmenting change on the real national output deflator are also examined. Comprised of two essays, this book begins with an analysis of the pure theory of the true cost-of-living index, which may be considered as an idealization of indices like the consumer price index and others of that type. The essay explores how the true cost-of-living index is affected by changes in consumer taste, quality changes in purchased goods, and the introduction of new goods into the market place. The second essay deals with the pure theory of the national output deflator and provides a foundation for the measurement of real national output (or product). It shows that the usual inequalities relating Paasche and Laspeyres to the true index are reversed (from what they are in cost-of-living theory) for the case of production. It also assesses the implications of changing production possibilities caused by technological change or a change in factor supplies. This monograph will be a useful resource for mathematicians, economists, and others interested in economic theory and mathematical economics.",

                "name": "Metabolic Conjugation and Metabolic Hydrolysis",
                "subtitle": "Volume I",
                "description": "Metabolic Conjugation and Metabolic Hydrolysis, Volume I is a comprehensive account of the main conjugation mechanisms and hydrolytic reactions. Topics covered range from the metabolic conjugates of steroids and N-hydroxy compounds to the effects of conjugated steroids on enzymes. The glucuronic acid pathway is also discussed, along with sulfoconjugation and sulfohydrolysis. Comprised of eight chapters, this volume first looks at the history of conjugation mechanisms before proceeding to developments in metabolic conjugations. The isolation, recognition, enzymic formation and hydrolysis, and the possible significance of steroid N-acetylglucosaminides and glucosides are considered. The book also examines the mechanisms involved in the enzymic formation of N-hydroxy compounds; the pathways by which N-hydroxy compounds may be further metabolized in vivo; and the chemical properties of conjugates of N-hydroxy compounds, particularly as these properties are related to the generation of reactive cations or free radicals in vivo. The possible role of conjugates of N-hydroxy compounds in the mechanism of carcinogenesis by aromatic amines and their N-acyl derivatives is also analyzed. Finally, glycoprotein and mucopolysaccharide hydrolysis and the role of hydrolases in cellular death are described. This monograph will be a useful resource for biologists, biochemists, physiologists, and pharmacologists.",
