                "name": "Functional Equations in Probability Theory",
                "subtitle": "",
                "description": "Functional Equations in Probability Theory deals with functional equations in probability theory and covers topics ranging from the integrated Cauchy functional equation (ICFE) to stable and semistable laws. The problem of identical distribution of two linear forms in independent and identically distributed random variables is also considered, with particular reference to the context of the common distribution of these random variables being normal. Comprised of nine chapters, this volume begins with an introduction to Cauchy functional equations as well as distribution functions and characteristic functions. The discussion then turns to the nonnegative solutions of ICFE on R+; ICFE with a signed measure; and application of ICFE to the characterization of probability distributions. Subsequent chapters focus on stable and semistable laws; ICFE with error terms on R+; independent/identically distributed linear forms and the normal laws; and distribution problems relating to the arc-sine, the normal, and the chi-square laws. The final chapter is devoted to ICFE on semigroups of Rd. This book should be of interest to mathematicians and statisticians.",

Some papers discuss immunization against sporozoites, against the exoerythrocytic stages of malaria parasites, against asexual blood-inhabiting stages of plasmodia, as well as gamete immunization in malaria. One paper describes various separation methods to isolate malaria parasites and their constituents. Another paper discusses in detail the theory and practice of methods used in measuring antibody responses which occur during plasmodial infections, including the antibody response against sporozoites, exoerythrocytic forms, and in the different blood stages. Another paper explains the vertebrate host's immune response to plasmodial infection as a homeostatic physiological response changing along with the progression of the disease. The changes in the dynamic cellular cascade are different as the disease progresses causing death, than when these lead to recovery. Another paper enumerates the parameters which determine malarial infectiousness from one individual to another such as the time of onset, duration, intensity of the blood infections, as well as the maturity, longevity, and rate of production of gametocytes. Pharmacologists, general medical practitioners, investigators, and laboratory technicians involved in malarial research will find the collection very useful.",

                "description": "The Boreal Ecosystem presents an overview of the state of knowledge on the boreal forest region of North America, with extensive reference to the boreal regions of Europe and Asia. Initial sections of this book deal with aspects of the floristic composition and evolutionary history of the boreal vegetation. These introduce subsequent discussions on the processes at work in vegetation, soils, and the atmospherein short, with the boreal forest as an ecosystem, the sum total of the influences of many closely interlaced biotic and physical factors. These include not only plant species that make up the visible vegetation but also nutrients, soil, temperature, rainfall, progression of the seasons, soil microflora, arthropods, insects, and larger animals such as marten, otter, beaver, moose, caribou, bear, and wolf, and man. All are closely linked strands in the web of life, a web apart from, yet dependent on and influencing, the raw physical environment. This book should serve as an introduction and reference source to its audience: undergraduate and graduate students in the biological and ecological disciplines, research workers in these fields as well as in related areas such as soil science, agronomy, genetics, and climatology; in short, everyone with an interest in boreal ecology.",

The present volume is devoted to the functioning of the mammary gland in the synthesis and secretion of milk. Emphasis has been placed on studies which have described on a biochemical and molecular basis the operation of the pathways and structures involved in the biosynthesis of milk in the functional secretory cells of the mammary gland and the diseases of lactation that can affect them. The volume is organized into two parts. Part I on the biosynthesis of milk covers topics such as the general metabolism associated with the synthesis of milk; biosynthesis of milk fat and milk proteins; biochemistry of lactose and related carbohydrates; and cell structure relating to the formation and secretion of milk. Part II on diseases of the mammary gland and lactation includes studies on the clinical endocrinology of prolactin, microbial diseases of the mammary gland, ketosis, and mouse mammary tumors.",

                "description": "Village Ethnoarchaeology: Rural Iran in Archaeological Perspective discusses selected tangible features of the subject area, noting the differences in households and associated material culture. The book comments among settlement variability, the complexities in relationships among population density, settlement age, area, and function. The text also deals with material correlates of sociocultural behavior, spatial organization, architectural variability, regional patterns, and archaeological sampling strategies. The book presents a study based on three sets of contemporary data: (1) from an ethnographic fieldwork on Aliabad in summer 1975; (2) the census and cartographic documents published by the Iranian government; and (3) a corpus of published comparative ethnographic data. The book notes that among the households in Aliabad, which is neither economically stratified nor markedly heterogeneous, economic variations exist. The text suggests that that material diversity and systems involving socioeconomic differentiation can have substantial time depth in this part of the world. The book can prove beneficial for archaeologists, anthropologist, sociologists, and researchers interested in ethnographic accounts of Middle Eastern communities.",

                "description": "Single Subject Research: Strategies for Evaluating Change presents an overview of strategies used to evaluate change in single subject research, a particular approach referring to time-series paradigms in which each subject is used repeatedly. These strategies include research design, graphical analysis, and statistical tests, and it will be apparent that such designs extend beyond those commonly employed in applied behavioral research. The book opens with a brief historical perspective of time-series and other small group research. Separate chapters follow covering the analysis of graphic data as being of singular importance in single subject research; the units-of-analysis issue and a nonparametric randomization approach to data analysis; and the growing awareness among researchers that understanding the individual characteristics of interacting subjects may be inadequate for understanding the process that has taken place between them. The final chapter reviews the advantages and disadvantages of the analytic methods presented in the previous chapters. This volume will be of interest to those individuals actively engaged in educational and psychological experimentation for which single subject research strategies are or may prove to be valuable. Students desiring to supplement their knowledge of a unique and rapidly emerging area of statistical analysis as applied to single subject research designs will also find this volume of importance.",

                "description": "Development in Statistics, Volume 1 is a collection of papers that deals with theory and application of parameter estimation in stochastic differential systems, the comparative aspects of the study of ordinary time series, and real multivariate distributions. Some papers discuss covariance analysis of nonstationary time series, nonparametric repeated significance tests, as well as discrete optimal factorial designs for statisticians and investigators of experiments. One paper cites an application of parameter estimation in stochastic differential systems in approximates of stability and control derivatives from flight test data. Another paper cites cases where procedures of ordinary time series (or point processes) have direct analogs in the study of point processes (or ordinary time series). One paper explains the applications of multivariate distributions in simultaneous tests on the equality of eigenvalues toward the covariance matrix, canonical correlation matrix, and a matrix associated with the multivariate analysis of variance. Another paper reviews two types of repeated significance tests, namely, the genuinely distribution-free tests based on a broad class of nonparametric statistics; and the asymptotically distribution-free tests based on a broad class of parametric statistics but having asymptotically nonparametric behavior. Both types can provide a unified solution to a broad class of problems. The collection can be valuable for mathematicians, students, and professors of calculus, statistics, or advanced mathematics.",

Other papers describe the culture of the invertebrate stages of plasmodia, of mosquito tissues, and also of erythrocytic and exoerythrocytic stages of plasmodia. One paper constructs a model to show the roles of the different destructive and regenerative processes in the mechanisms of erythrocyte destruction in malaria. Another paper describes the organ changes and physiopathological mechanism connected with Plasmodium infection. These organs concern the spleen, liver, heart, and vascular system. One paper reviews the procedures involved in malaria transmission by mosquitoes, as well as some specialized procedures unique in avian, rodent, simian, and human malarias. Another paper discusses the benefits and drawbacks of a culture medium based on the composition of adult anopheline hemolymph. This medium should lead to a rapid growth rate in primary cultures of mosquito cells and a shorter interval of adaptation for continuous cell lines. The collection can prove useful for pharmacologists, general medical practitioners, investigators, and laboratory technicians involved in mosquito borne diseases or tropical medicine research.",

                "description": "Multivariate Analysis III contains the proceedings of the Third International Symposium on Multivariate Analysis held at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio, on June 19-24, 1972. The papers explore the theory and applications of multivariate analysis and cover areas such as time series and stochastic processes; distribution theory and inference; characteristic functions and characterizations; and design and analysis of experiments. Classification, modeling, and reliability are also discussed. Comprised of 27 chapters, this volume begins with an introduction to two-dimensional random fields, giving results for a class of Gaussian processes with a multidimensional time parameter. The next chapter deals with concepts of consistency in spectral estimation for multivariate time series and considers the alternative of estimating the spectral distribution function or the spectral density function. Abstract martingales and ergodic theory are also examined, along with methods for assessing multivariate normality; inference and redundant parameters; characterization of the multivariate geometric distribution; and max-min designs in the analysis of variance. This monograph will be useful to statisticians and probabilists, as well as to scientists in other disciplines who are broadly interested in multivariate analysis.",

                "description": "Discrete Computational Structures describes discrete mathematical concepts that are important to computing, covering necessary mathematical fundamentals, computer representation of sets, graph theory, storage minimization, and bandwidth. The book also explains conceptual framework (Gorn trees, searching, subroutines) and directed graphs (flowcharts, critical paths, information network). The text discusses algebra particularly as it applies to concentrates on semigroups, groups, lattices, propositional calculus, including a new tabular method of Boolean function minimization. The text emphasizes combinatorics and probability. Examples show different techniques of the general process of enumerating objects. Combinatorics cover permutations, enumerators for combinations, Stirling numbers, cycle classes of permutations, partitions, and compositions. The book cites as example the interplay between discrete mathematics and computing using a system of distinct representatives (SDR) problem. The problem, originating from group theory, graph theory, and set theory can be worked out by the student with a network model involving computers to generate and analyze different scenarios. The book is intended for sophomore or junior level, corresponding to the course B3, \"Introduction to Discrete Structures,\" in the ACM Curriculum 68, as well as for mathematicians or professors of computer engineering and advanced mathematics.",

The conference brought together many of the investigators who have actively contributed to furthering knowledge and understanding of immunological tolerance. It will be immediately clear to the reader that the conference was structured in a way to consider phenomena of tolerance and immune suppression as interrelated entities with a certain degree of emphasis on the possible common cellular mechanisms involved. The volume contains 36 contributions presented during the seven sessions of the conference. The papers presented in Session I examined T-cell tolerance. The presentations in Session II focused on B cell tolerance. The papers in Sessions III and IV focused on the mechanisms of B cell and T cell tolerance, respectively. Session V dealt with the activity of suppressor cells as a mechanism of tolerance. The papers in Session VI investigated the suppressive activity of antibody and antigen-antibody complexes. In Session VII a final General Discussion was held in order to identify what has been established concerning the phenomenology and mechanisms of specific immunological tolerance, what are the major unresolved issues, and what approaches appear most promising to answer these questions.",

Some papers discuss testicular organization, reproductive toxicity testing systems, and germ-cell genetic toxicology. The use of in vitro systems by investigators to dissect the male reproductive toxicants can lead to a more scientific approach toward hazard assessment and the development of safer drugs and chemicals. Other papers explain the fundamental reproductive biology of the testis, the neuroendocrine system, the epididymis and accessory sex organs, and spermatozoal evaluation. Toxicological aspects cover the toxicological evaluation of the complete reproductive system, testicular morphology, sperm assessment, and germ-cell mutagenesis. One paper describes alternative methods in toxicologyby using new in vitro systems that should reduce or eliminate the need for tests conducted on animals. In vitro methodology embraces other systems such as from subcellular fractions to isolated intact organs. In relation to target-organ toxicity, the researcher can focus using primary cell cultures. The papers explore advances in applied nonlinear analysis, with emphasis on reaction-diffusion equations; optimization theory; constructive techniques in numerical analysis; and applications to physical and life sciences. In the area of reaction-diffusion equations, the discussions focus on nonlinear oscillations; rotating spiral waves; stability and asymptotic behavior; discrete-time models in population genetics; and predator-prey systems. In optimization theory, the following topics are considered: inverse and ill-posed problems with application to geophysics; conjugate gradients; and quasi-Newton methods with applications to large-scale optimization; sequential conjugate gradient-restoration algorithm for optimal control problems with non-differentiable constraints; differential geometric methods in nonlinear programming; and equilibria in policy formation games with random voting. In the area of constructive techniques in numerical analysis, numerical and approximate solutions of boundary value problems for ordinary and partial differential equations are examined, along with finite element analysis and constructive techniques for accretive and monotone operators. In addition, the book explores turbulent fluid flows; stability problems for Hopf bifurcation; product integral representation of Volterra equations with delay; weak solutions of variational problems, nonlinear integration on measures; and fixed point theory. This monograph will be helpful to students, practitioners, and researchers in the field of mathematics.",

                "description": "Psychobiological Aspects of Cognitive Growth elucidates the psychobiological aspects of cognitive development. The goals of this book are limited to a description of what may be defined as \"\"borderline\"\" phenomena of cognitive development. These are phenomena that can be observed and measured behaviorally, and also can be conveniently investigated by neurophysiological, genetic, and biological methods. The book begins with a review of \"\"basic approaches\"\" to the problems of psychobiological interaction in cognitive processes. It then presents major theoretical contributions of prominent authors to this subject, namely, Werner's sensoritonic theory, Rothschild's model of the biosemiotic structure of the nervous system, and Piaget's psychobiological interpretations of intellectual growth. This is followed by a general discussion of psychobiological aspects of cognitive development in infancy, and a report on physical correlates of school readiness, including some investigations on relations between static balance ability and reading skill. After a presentation of findings and theoretical considerations related to effects of birth season on physical and mental growth, the final chapter summarizes three studies on the impact of physiological pubertal maturation on mental achievements at adolescence.",

The conference provided a forum for reviewing advances in nonlinear systems and their applications and tackled a wide array of topics ranging from abstract evolution equations and nonlinear semigroups to controllability and reachability. Various methods used in solving equations are also discussed, including approximation techniques for delay systems. Most of the applications are in the area of the life sciences. Comprised of 59 chapters, this book begins with a discussion on monotonically convergent upper and lower bounds for classes of conflicting populations, followed by an analysis of constrained problems. The reader is then introduced to approximation techniques for delay systems in biological models; differential inequalities for Liapunov functions; and stability or chaos in discrete epidemic models. Subsequent chapters deal with nonlinear boundary value problems for elliptic systems; bounds for solutions of reaction-diffusion equations; monotonicity and measurability; and periodic solutions of some integral equations from the theory of epidemics. "description": "Additive and Polynomial Representations deals with major representation theorems in which the qualitative structure is reflected as some polynomial function of one or more numerical functions defined on the basic entities. Examples are additive expressions of a single measure (such as the probability of disjoint events being the sum of their probabilities), and additive expressions of two measures (such as the logarithm of momentum being the sum of log mass and log velocity terms). The book describes the three basic procedures of fundamental measurement as the mathematical pivot, as the utilization of constructive methods, and as a series of isomorphism theorems leading to consistent numerical solutions. The text also explains the counting of units in relation to an empirical relational structure which contains a concatenation operation. The book notes some special variants which arise in connection with relativity and thermodynamics. The text cites examples from physics and psychology for which additive conjoint measurement provides a possible method of fundamental measurement. The book will greatly benefit mathematicians, econometricians, and academicians in advanced mathematics or physics.",
