                "name": "The Antigens",
                "subtitle": "Volume VII",
                "description": "The Antigens, Volume VII is a comprehensive treatise covering all aspects of antigens, including their chemistry and biology as well as their immunologic role and expression. Different aspects of the genetic control of the immune response are explored, along with the link between infection and autoimmunity. Comprised of four chapters, this volume begins with a discussion on the determinant-specific genetic regulation of the immune response and the genes that control it. The next chapter deals with the molecular genetics and polymorphism of of class II (Ia) antigens, as well as the correlation between immunogenetic and molecular genetic maps. The antigen-specific T cell clones and the specific factors derived from them are then examined. The last chapter considers the relationship between infection and autoimmunity; the role of infection in the expression of class II antigens; and processes responsible for the induction of autoimmune diseases. A specific therapy for these diseases is described. This monograph will be of interest to practitioners and researchers in immunology, experimental and clinical medicine, biochemistry, and other disciplines.",

                "name": "Strategies of Immune Regulation",
                "subtitle": "",
                "description": "Strategies of Immune Regulation provides an overview of the state of knowledge on how immune regulation works. Many working scientists have taken the time to set down their views in one of two categories: (a) \"\"conventional\"\" short papers with standard documentation, (b) short expressions of opinion, with or without references. It is hoped that this book will act as a jumping-off point for new young workers, entering the field, who will ultimately fashion the next paradigm. The book contains 94 chapters organized into two sections. Section I begins with discussions of the general regulatory features of the immune systems. This is followed by papers on the role of the major histocompatibility complex and regulation involving the antibody molecules. The contributions in Section II cover the organization of Ig genes; antibody diversity and the development of the immune repertoire; MHC restriction; lymphocyte interactions and regulatory targets; role of the Ig receptor in triggering; function of IgD; lymphocyte maturation; idiotype regulation; and control of antiself reactions.",

                "description": "The Joints and Synovial Fluid II is a collection of papers that deals with the basic aspects of the articular apparatus, including the general pathology of the appendicular and axial structures, the disease processes, and comparative anthology. Some papers discuss in vitro culture of joints and articular tissues, the chemistry of the ground substance of joint cartilage, and the structure of the intervertebral disc in relation to its function and to the aging process. As a humans being ages, the whole nucleus found in the disc will behave more like a sponge than a shock absorber as regards its ability to distribute stress and pressure from the end plates of the disc. Another paper describes load distribution of the knee, ankle joint, the spine, the arms, elbows, fingers. One paper deals with the pathology of the spine covering infectious diseases, metabolic and developmental disease of cartilage and bones, traumatic and degenerative diseases, autoimmune connective tissue diseases (such as ankylosing spondylitis), and miscellaneous diseases (such as tumors). The collection is suitable for researchers, scientists, medical practitioners, and academicians in the fields of biochemistry, bioengineering, anatomical sciences, immunology, organ physiology, cell biology, orthopedics, rheumatology, or rehabilitation medicine.",

                "description": "Early Experiences and Early Behavior: Implications for Social Development discusses the problems associated with determining the effects of early experiences on later behavior, with emphasis on social development, both in humans and in animals. The overall approach is one of constructive criticism, in that specific problems in methodology and conceptualization are highlighted and promising new approaches are suggested and illustrated. The book is divided into two parts. Part I deals with methodological, theoretical, and conceptual problems: Recurring problems of methodology and definition are specified; a thorough review of the animal literature in early experiences studies over the past quarter of a century pinpoints certain areas of progress among many other areas where advances have been sparse; and two newer approaches are discussed and supported, namely behavioral metamorphosis and the interactional-developmental approach. Part II presents two case studies which serve to exemplify a variety of older and newer approaches to the investigation of the effects of early experiences on social development.",

                "description": "Proceedings of the Conference on Finite Groups provides information pertinent to the fundamental aspects of finite group theory. This book presents the problem of characterizing simple groups in terms of the local structure of a group. Organized into five parts encompassing 43 chapters, this book begins with an overview of the characterization of the Chevalley groups over fields of odd order and indicates the role of this characterization in the theory of component type groups. This text then examines the structure as well as the representations of specific simple groups. Other chapters consider the general theory of representations and characters of finite groups. This book discusses as well permutation groups and the connection between group theory and geometry. The final chapter deals with finite solvable groups as well as the theory of formations. This book is a valuable resource for mathematicians, graduate students, and research workers.",

This book is organized into three chapters. Chapter 1 discusses nonmetric affine geometry, while Chapter 2 reviews inner products of vector spaces. The metric affine geometry is treated in Chapter 3. This text specifically discusses the concrete model for affine space, dilations in terms of coordinates, parallelograms, and theorem of Desargues. The inner products in terms of coordinates and similarities of affine spaces are also elaborated. The prerequisites for this publication are a course in linear algebra and an elementary course in modern algebra that includes the concepts of group, normal subgroup, and quotient group. This monograph is suitable for students and aspiring geometry high school teachers.",

                "description": "Elliptic Problem Solvers provides information pertinent to some aspects of the numerical solution of elliptic partial differential equations. This book presents the advances in developing elliptic problem solvers and analyzes their performance. Organized into 40 chapters, this book begins with an overview of the approximate solution of using a standard Galerkin method employing piecewise linear triangular finite elements. This text then defines the types of vector architecture and discusses the variation in performance that can occur on a vector processor as a function of algorithm and implementation. Other chapters consider the implementation of techniques for elliptical problems. This book discusses as well the six techniques for the solution of nonsymmetric linear systems arising from finite difference discretization of the convection-diffusion equation. The final chapter deals with the basic semiconductor device equations. This book is a valuable resource for electrical and computer engineers, scientists, computer programmers, pure mathematicians, and research workers.",

Topics covered range from microbial polysaccharides and lymphocytic receptors for antigens to antigenic determinants and antibody-combining sites. Allergens and the genetics of allergy are also explored. Comprised of seven chapters, this volume begins with a review of microbial polysaccharides as antigens, followed by a discussion on antigenic determinants and their specific reaction with antibody-combining sites. The reader is then introduced to the reaction of antigens with their specific receptors on lymphocytes. The next four chapters are concerned with several categories of more complex antigens which, in most cases, have yet to be characterized adequately at a molecular level: allergens, histocompatibility antigens, antigens of Mycoplasmatales and chlamydiae, and animal viruses. The book concludes with an analysis of virus infections and the immune responses they elicit. This monograph will be of interest to practitioners and researchers in immunology, experimental and clinical medicine, biochemistry, and other disciplines.",

                "description": "Bleomycin Chemotherapy focuses on the clinical uses of bleomycin. Bleomycin, a group of glycopeptides isolated from Streptomyces verticillus, has a unique structure and mechanism of action among anticancer drugs. The drugs remarkable lack of bone marrow toxicity prompted its addition to myelosuppressive regimens and enabled treatment of patients with compromised hematopoietic function. Bleomycin is an integral component of one of the great triumphs of medical oncologythe curative treatment of metastatic testicular carcinomas. Similar curative potential has been demonstrated for bleomycin in combination with cisplatin and vinblastine in germ-cell cancers of the ovary. Bleomycin is included in several important treatment regimens for Hodgkin's disease and non-Hodgkin's lymphomas. The drug also has clinical activity against squamous carcinomas of various sites. These uses and other aspects, including the development of new bleomycin analogs, are discussed in the following chapters, which were first presented at a symposium jointly sponsored by the Northern California Cancer Program and Bristol Laboratories in San Francisco, California, 14-15 September 1984.",

The book puts special attention to the presentation of specific laboratory directions for the many name reactions used in describing the synthesis of these functional groups. Each chapter deals with the preparation of a given functional group by various reaction types (condensation, elimination, oxidation, reduction) and a variety of starting materials. Ynamines, enamines, allenes, and N-nitroso compounds are some of the organic functional groups described in the text. Organic chemists will find the book invaluable.",

                "description": "Money, Banking, and the Economy: A Monetarist View presents a systematic \"monetarist\" approach to money, banking, and the economy. The monetarist approach is a blend of the pre-Keynesian quantity theory, the tradition represented by D. H. Robertson, and the modern monetarist school, represented by Milton Friedman and his followers. A systematic development of a model of nominal income, based upon the Cambridge equation and the loanable funds theory of interest, is presented. This model is applied to the business cycle; inflation and stagflation; balance of payments and foreign exchange rates; and monetary and fiscal policy theories. Comprised of 20 chapters, this book begins with an introduction to the concept of money and its functions and how it contributes to economic instability. The discussion then turns to the new and old definitions of the things that serve as money, the structure and institutions of financial markets and financial instruments; banks, banking markets, and banking regulations; and the money supply process. Subsequent chapters explore the structure and functions of the Federal Reserve System; the problem of implementing monetary policy; the Clower-Leijonhufvud idea of Say's Principle; the quantity theory of money as described by the equation of exchange or the Cambridge equation; and the connection between money and business cycles. The book concludes by describing a monetarist-public choice perspective on the efficacy of monetary and fiscal policies. This monograph will be of value to undergraduate students and economists.",

Learning objectives are included at the beginning of each chapter to give the student an overview of the skills they can expect to master after completing the chapter, along with worked-out examples and practice exercises; drill problems and word problems; and post-tests that let students measure their problem-solving skills. Topics covered in this book include operations with whole numbers, decimals, fractions, and percent; sales and inventory; finance; business and personal expenses; borrowing and investing; and data analysis. Starting with the fourth chapter, a case study is included at the end of each chapter for an in-depth analysis and discussion of a hypothetical business-related situation. Optional subsections in each chapter deal with mental arithmetic skills. Step-by-step problem-solving procedures are translated into written formulas, located in easy-to-find boxes for quick reference. A chapter glossary includes definitions for all key terms introduced in the chapter. The answer key at the end of the text includes all the answers for the pretests and post-tests, plus the answers to odd-numbered exercises. This monograph is intended for instructors of business mathematics and for their students who want to understand the concepts and master the problem-solving techniques of business mathematics.",
