"name": "Lydia Ginzburg's Prose",
                "subtitle": "Reality in Search of Literature",
                "description": "
The Russian writer Lydia Ginzburg (190290) is best known for her Notes from the Leningrad Blockade and for influential critical studies, such as On Psychological Prose, investigating the problem of literary character in French and Russian novels and memoirs. Yet she viewed her most vital work to be the extensive prose fragments, composed for the desk drawer, in which she analyzed herself and other members of the Russian intelligentsia through seven traumatic decades of Soviet history. In this book, the first full-length English-language study of the writer, Emily Van Buskirk presents Ginzburg as a figure of previously unrecognized innovation and importance in the literary landscape of the twentieth century.

Based on a decade's work in Ginzburgs archives, the book discusses previously unknown manuscripts and uncovers a wealth of new information about the authors life, focusing on Ginzburgs quest for a new kind of writing adequate to her times. She writes of universal experiencesfrustrated love, professional failures, remorse, agingand explores the modern fragmentation of identity in the context of war, terror, and an oppressive state. Searching for a new concept of the self, and deeming the psychological novel (a beloved academic specialty) inadequate to express this concept, Ginzburg turned to fragmentary narratives that blur the lines between history, autobiography, and fiction.

This full account of Ginzburgs writing career in many genres and emotional registers enables us not only to rethink the experience of Soviet intellectuals, but to arrive at a new understanding of writing and witnessing during a horrific century.
",

'Caribbean Ice,' set on St. Ursula, a British Caribbean island very near to the American and British Virgin Islands, is the second novel in a trilogy featuring Frank James, poet and private detective. Until being indicted, Bailey Vandeventer ran the Back Bay Escort Service providing sexual services to a high end clientele that included leading politicians, business men and opinion makers. When the Boston Globe ran an article claiming that Bailey had notebooks detailing her clients' identities and sexual preferences she takes refuge on St. Ursula, staying with her college roommate, Vivian Parker, the wife of St. Ursula's Prime Minister, L. Arthur Parker. Parker tells Frank that if he wishes to remain on St. Ursula he will protect Bailey from the people who are seeking her notebooks and wish to silence her. When Bailey is kidnapped, Frank, Chance and their friend, Vinnie Ledford, a retired SEAL, set out to rescue her.",

St. Ursula is a British Caribbean island very near to the American and British Virgin Islands. Herbie Lewis, a local bar musician asks Frank to investigate the death of his brother, Jeff. While it was ruled to be an accidental drowning, Herbie is convinced that Jeff was murdered. As a hurricane approaches St. Ursula and the Virgin Islands, Frank and his friend Chance are drawn into a confrontation with unscrupulous marketers, owners of a pyramid scheme that purports to be founded upon religious principles. The parallel projects of living in, representing, and learning from the moment run through the Enlightenment's endeavors as tokens of an ambition and a heritage imposing its only and ultimately impossible cohesion. In this illuminating study, Thomas M. Kavanagh argues that Enlightenment culture and its tensions, contradictions, and achievements flow from a subversive attention to the present as present, freed from the weight of past and future.

Examining a wide sweep of literary and artistic culture, Kavanagh argues against the traditional view of the Age of Reason as one of coherent, recognizable ideology expressed in a structured narrative form. In literature, he analyzes the moment at work in the inebriating lightness of Marivaux's repartee; the new-found freedom of Lahontan's and Rousseau's ideals of a consciousness limited to the present; Diderot's championing of Epicurean epistemology; Graffigny's portrayal of abrupt cultural displacement; and Casanova's penchant for chance's redefining moment. The moment in art theory and practice is explored in such forms as de Piles's defense of color; Du Bos's foregrounding of perception; Watteau's indulgence in a corporeal present; Chardin's dismantling of mimesis; and Boucher's and Fragonard's thematics of desire.
",

                "description": "
Sea-Brothers offers the most extensive analysis to date of the sea and its meaning in American literature. On the basis of his study of Melville, Crane, London, Hemingway, Matthiessen, and ten lesser-known sea-writers, Bert Bender argues that the tradition of American sea fiction did not end with the opening of the western frontier and the replacement of sailing ships by steamers. Rather, he demonstrates its continuity and vitality, identifying a central vision within the tradition and showing how particular authors draw from, transform, and contribute to it.

What is most distinctive about American sea fiction, Bender contends, is its visionary, often mystical, response to the biological world and to man's perceived place in the larger universe. When Melville envisioned the sea as the essential element of life, indeed as life itself, he changed the course of American sea fiction by introducing the relevance of biological thought. But his meditations on the whale and \"the ungraspable phantom of life\" project a different reality from that envisioned by his successors. In American sea fiction after Melville, the influence of Origin of Species is as powerful as that of Moby Dick or the theme of sailing ships being displaced by steam.

The ideal of brotherhood so central to American sea fiction was severely compromised by the biological reality of a competitive, warring nature. Twentieth-century sea fiction has continued to center on the biological world and address the possibility of democratic brotherhood, but the issues were fundamentally changed by Darwin's theories.

This book will be a valuable source for students and scholars of American literature and will interest readers of sea fiction.
",

                "description": "
Upon its publication in 1871, Charles Darwin's The Descent of Man and Selection in Relation to Sex sent shock waves through the scientific community and the public at large. In an original and persuasive study, Bert Bender demonstrates that it is this treatise on sexual selection, rather than any of Darwin's earlier works on evolution, that provoked the most immediate and vigorous response from American fiction writers. These authors embraced and incorporated Darwin's theories, insights, and language, creating an increasingly dark and violent view of sexual love in American realist literature.

In The Descent of Love, Bender carefully rereads the works of William Dean Howells, Henry James, Elizabeth Stuart Phelps, Sarah Orne Jewett, Kate Chopin, Harold Frederic, Charles W. Chesnutt, Edith Wharton, and Ernest Hemingway, teasing from them a startling but utterly convincing preoccupation with questions of sexual selection. Competing for readership as novelists who best grasped the \"real\" nature of human love, these writers also participated in a heated social debate over racial and sexual differences and the nature of sex itself. Influenced more by The Descent of Man than by the Origin of Species, Bender's novelists built upon Darwin's anthropological and zoological materials to anatomize their character's courtship behavior, returning consistently to concerns with physical beauty, natural dominance, and the power to select a mate.

Bringing the resources of the history of science and intellectual history to this, the first full-length study of the impact of Darwin's theories in American literature, Bender revises accepted views of social Darwinism, American literary realism, and modernism in American literature, forever changing our perceptions of courtship and sexual interaction in American fiction from 1871 to 1926 and beyond.
",

                "description": "CEOs and other leaders can find leadership advice from the likes of Martha Stewart, Steve Jobs, Tony Soprano, Jack Welsh, Oprah and even Jesus. They can read about how to lead by serving, by leaning in, by becoming great rather than merely good and by breaking all of the rules.

While the stories of the rise and fall of the mighty (and the Almighty) demonstrate valuable lessons, the implied message is that you too can be the next Martha or Steve or Jack. Only in Garrison Kiellors mythical Lake Wobegon are all of the women strong, the men good looking, the children above average and the CEOs god-like.

What is missing? Real lessons for real leaders in real language.

Todd Ordal is a former business leader with 25 years in management roles who led teams as large as 7,000 employees, was CEO of several companies and has served on over 10 boards of directors. He did a lot of good work in those roles and also made a lot of mistakes. Todd now helps other CEOs and executives lead better, profit more and sleep more soundly at night---usually without narcotics!

Todds clients are successful business people, but they are not rock stars, untouchables or even god-like. They work hard, they are emotionally intelligent, they want to win and they want to run an ethical business that is a great place to work. In other words, they are real and they want real lessons on leadership, not platitudes, parables or posturing. If you want to learn the real lessons to become a successful real CEO start here!",

                "description": "This book approached water and sanitation as an African gender and human rights issue. Empirical case studies from Kenya, Malawi, South Africa and Zimbabwe show how coexisting international, national and local regulations of water and sanitation respond to the ways in which different groups of rural and urban women gain access to water for personal, domestic and livelihood purposes. The authors, who are lawyers, sociologists, political scientists and anthropologists, explore how women cope in contexts where they lack secure rights, and participation in water governance institutions, formal and informal. The research shows how women - as producers of family food - rely on water from multiple sources that are governed by community based norms and institutions which recognise the right to water for livelihood. How these common pool water resources - due to protection gaps in both international and national law - are threatened by large-scale development and commercialisation initiatives, facilitated through national permit systems, is a key concern. The studies demonstrate that existing water governance structures lack mechanisms which make them accountable to poor and vulnerable water users on the ground, most importantly women. The findings thus underscore the need to intensify measures to hold states accountable, not just in water services provision, but in assuring the basic human right to clean drinking water and sanitation; and also to protect water for livelihoods.",

Understanding these properties is essential for engineers and scientists to tackle the numerous issues in food processing, including preservation, storage, distribution and consumption.This book discusses models to predict some of the physical-chemical properties (pH, aw and ionic strength) for biological media containing various solutes. In recent years, food production has involved less processing and fewer additives or preservatives. If health benefits for consumers are obvious, it is not only necessary to adapt current processing and preservation processes but also to verify that appropriate technological and health properties are preserved.The authors present established models, but also introduce new tools for prediction with modeling methods that are part of a more general approach to understand the behavior of fluid mixtures and design new products or processes through numerical simulation.
Describes the construction of a tool to allow you to predict the physical-chemical properties of foods and bacterial broths Shows you how to apply this tool with complex medias to predict water activity and pH levels and how to integrate this tool with a process simulator Full with theoretical equations and examples to help you apply the content to your data",

                "description": "
Essentials of Coordination Chemistry: A Simplified Approach with 3D Visuals provides an accessible overview of this key, foundational topic in inorganic chemistry. Thoroughly illustrated within the book and supplemented by online 3D images and videos in full color, this valuable resource covers basic fundamentals before exploring more advanced topics of interest.

The work begins with an introduction to the structure, properties, and syntheses of ligands with metal centers, before discussing the variety of isomerism exhibited by coordination compounds, such as structural, geometrical and optical isomerism. As thermodynamics and kinetics provide a gateway to synthesis and reactivity of coordination compounds, the book then describes the determination of stability constants and composition of complexes. Building upon those principles, the resource then explains a wide variety of nucleophilic substitution reactions exhibited by both octahedral and square planar complexes. Finally, the book discusses metal carbonyls and nitrosyls, special classes of compounds that can stabilize zero or even negative formal oxidation states of metal ions. Highlighting preparations, properties, and structures, the text explores the unique type of Metal-Ligand bonding which enable many interesting applications of these compounds.

Thoughtfully organized for academic use, Essentials of Coordination Chemistry: A Simplified Approach with 3D Visuals encourages interactive learning. Advanced undergraduate and graduate students, as well as researchers requiring a full overview and visual understanding of coordination chemistry, will find this book invaluable.
Includes valuable visual content through 3D images and videos in full color, available online Provides a valuable introduction to the study of organic and inorganic ligands with metal centers Discusses advanced topics including metal carbonyls and nitrosyls",
