"description": "Producing 24pP Video demystifies the emerging standards of film and video production and discusses the 24p video film format to help novice and experienced filmmakers alike learn how to better use the newly available DV cameras. Since the 24p frame rate closely approximates the look and feel of film, it is the speed of choice whenever a \"cinematic\" look is desired. 24p video also offers certain compression options that are advantageous to web and wireless delivery. This full-color book discusses the special techniques required by 24p productions - all the way through the production, from preproduction planning through post and output. Each chapter includes techniques, examples, tips, and case studies. The field techniques section features real-world setups presented as demonstrations or as tutorials. Case studies present profiles of people producing 24p projects, and the DVD includes step-by-step instructions that illustrate how to work with 24p material in NLE, compositor, DVD authoring, and audio applications.",

"description": "Beginning AutoCAD 2005 is a course based on learning and practising the essentials of 2D drawing using AutoCAD. Bob McFarlanes hands-on approach is uniquely suited to independent learning and use on courses. The focus on 2D drawing in one book, ensures the reader gets a thorough grounding in the subject, with a greater depth of coverage than tends to be available from general introductions to AutoCAD. As a result, this book provides a true, step-by-step, detailed exploration of the AutoCAD functions required at each stage of producing a 2D drawing an approach often not found in the many software reference guides available. The emphasis on learning through doing makes this book ideal for anyone involved in engineering, construction or architecture where the focus is on productivity and practical skills. The author has also matched the coverage to the requirements of City and Guilds, Edexcel (BTEC) and SQA syllabuses.New features in AutoCAD 2005 are covered in this book including: Drafting Tools; Drawing Management; Drawing Output; Plot and Publish Tools; Productivity Tools; Sheet Set Manager, and Tool Palette Enhancements. The result is a useful refresher course for anyone using AutoCAD at this level, and those upgrading to the new software release. The course is also designed to be fully relevant to anyone using other recent releases, including AutoCAD 2004.Bob McFarlane is Curriculum Manager for CAD and New Media at Motherwell College, Scotland, and an Autodesk Educational Developer.",

This book is intended to redress the balance and, taking strategy as its starting point, it looks at the overall roleof HRM in the organization. The author explores strategic human resource management through chapters on managing change in strategy, structure, and culture; the role of human resource planning, and types of employment system. He also reviews some of the key issues in managing different employee groups. These themes are problem- and issue- focused and extensively illustrated throughout with case study examples. Today's managers must address new issues that their predecessors never faced, from the threats of professional piracy and casual copying of digital media products, to global networks, on-demand consumption, and changing business models. The book explains the new new vocabulary of media moguls, such as bandwidth, digital rights management, customer relations management, distributed work groups, centralized broadcast operations, automated playlists, server-based playout, repurposing, mobisodes, TV-to-DVD, and content management. The chapters logically unfold the ways that managers are evolving their practices to make content, market it, and deliver it to consumers in a competitive, global digital marketplace. In addition to media companies, this book covers management processes that extend to all content-producing organizations, because today's students are as likely to produce high-quality video and Web video for ABC Computer Sales as they are for the ABC Entertainment Television Network.",

The guide is also useful reference for those in Higher Education on Professional, Architectural and other associated courses with a building element. First published in 1989 as Building Terminology, this second edition has been expanded and updated to cover an even wider range of terms, concepts and new practices. Including slang and regional variations, these are clearly defined and cross-referenced, many with the aid of illustrations, to provide an insight into the building industry as a whole. The logical A-Z arrangement in each section makes this an ideal reference source. The book is also highly illustrated with over 350 diagrams and photographs. The subjects covered include: architectural style; building construction; documentation, administration and control; materials and scientific principles and services and finishes.Peter Brett was formerly a Head of Faculty for construction at Brooklyn College, Birmingham. He is now in private practice undertaking design, construction and consultancy projects. Brett is an Honorary Member of the City and Guilds of London Institute and a Construction Education Consultant, in addition to being a Chief Examiner and Assessor for various UK, overseas and NVQ schemes.",

"description": "Selwyn Goldsmith's Designing for the Disabled has, since it was first published in 1963, been a bible for practising architects around the world. Now, as a new book with a radical new vision, comes his Designing for the Disabled: The New Paradigm.Goldsmith's new paradigm is based on the concept of architectural disability. As a version of the social model of disability, it is not exclusively the property of physically disabled people. Others who are afflicted by it include women, since men customarily get proportionately four times as many amenities in public toilets as women - and women have to queue where men do not - and those with infants in pushchairs, because normal WC facilities are invariably too small to get a pushchair and infant into.To counter architectural disability, Goldsmith's line is that the axiom for legislation action has to be 'access for everyone' - it should not just be 'access for the disabled', as it presently is with the Part M building regulation and relevant provisions of the 1995 Disability Discrimination Act. In a 40-page annex to his book he sets out the terms that a new-style Part M regulation and its Approved Document might take, one that would cover alterations to existing buildings as well as new buildings. But architects and building control officers need not, he says, wait for new a legislation to apply new practical procedures to meet the requirements of the current Part M regulation; they can, as he advises, act positively now. This is a book which will oblige architects to rethink the methodology of designing for the disabled. It is a book that no practising architect, building control officer, local planning officer or access officer can afford to be without.",

"description": "Scenic effects involving rotating turntables, tracking stage wagons, and the vertical movement of curtains and painted drops have become common in both Broadway and Regional theatre productions. The machines that drive these effects range from small pneumatic cylinders pushing loads of a few pounds an inch or two, to 40 horsepower winches running multi-ton scenery at speeds 6 feet per second or more. Usually this machinery is designed by theatre technicians specifically for a particular show's effect. Compared to general industry, this design process is short, often only a few days long, it is done by one person, design teams are rare, and it is done in the absence of reference material specifically addressing the issues involved. The main goal of this book is to remedy this last situation.Mechanical Design for the Stage will be a reference for you that will:* provide the basic engineering formulas needed to predict the forces, torques, speeds, and power required by a given move* give a technician a design process to follow which will direct their work from general concepts to specific detail as a design evolves, and* show many examples of traditional stage machinery designs. The book's emphasis will be on following standard engineering design and construction practices, and developing machines that are functional, efficient to build, easily maintained, and safe to use.",

Beginning with the thoughts of communication pioneer Carl Rogers, this book covers the origins and history of emotional intelligence, why it is essential at this point in the changing marketplace, how to delegate and negotiate more effectively, and how to change yourself to become a more effective player. An EQ (Emotional Quotient) survey helps you determine where you are on the scale of executive intelligence. Putting Emotional Intelligence to Work leaves you with a greater understanding of the new work ethic for 21st-century leadership, its business and personal benefits, how to teach it in a corporate setting, and how to build self-managed teams with the right mix and match of personality types. Dr. Ryback's book brings many resources together to consolidate an approach to business that combines the practical with the thoughtful, emotional, and intuitive. "description": "'Chemical Principles of Textile Conservation' provides must-have knowledge for conservators who do not always have a scientific background. This vital book brings together from many sources the material science necessary to understand the properties, deterioration and investigation of textile artefacts. It also aids understanding of the chemical processes during various treatments, such as: cleaning; humidification; drying; disinfestation; disinfection; and the use of adhesives and consolidants in conservation of historical textiles. Textile conservators will now have ready access to the necessary knowledge to understand the chemistry of the objects they are asked to treat and to make informed decisions about how to preserve textiles. The combination of a chemist and a conservator provides the perfect authorial team. It ensures a unique dual function of the text which provides textile conservators with vital chemical knowledge and gives scientists an understanding of textile conservation necessary to direct their research. The many practical examples and case studies illustrate the utility of the relatively large chemical introduction and the essential chemical information which is included. The case studies, many illustrated in colour, range from the treatment of the Ghandis' clothes, high-altitude flying suits and a Mary Quant raincoat, to the Hungarian Coronation Mantle.",
