                "description": "This is the first book to provide a critical criminological perspective on sport and the connections between sport and crime. It draws on the inter-disciplinary nature of criminology and incorporates emerging perspectives like social harm, gender and sexuality, and green criminology. Written from an international perspective, it covers topics including sports scandals and the possibility of crime prevention through sport. American football, boxing, soccer and sumo are all examined.\nThe book considers both sports law and the sociology of sport and will be essential reading for students and academics in these fields.",

                "description": "How many people are imprisoned across the globe? What factors can help explain variations in the use of imprisonment in different countries? What ethical considerations should apply to the way imprisonment is used? Providing a comprehensive account of prison populations worldwide, this new work links prison statistics from the last 15 years with considerations of how prisons and prison populations are managed. With commentary from its well-known, respected authors on what is meant by an ethical approach to the use of imprisonment, and how this can be sustained in ever more challenging social, economic and political environments, this book is a major contribution to the knowledge of those currently debating prisons and the use of imprisonment, whether from academic, policy, practitioner, activist or lay perspectives. Its accessible, informative infographics also make it an engaging read and a valuable teaching resource for undergraduate and postgraduate courses in criminology, law, political science and public policy.",

Written by a wide range of experts, it includes theories, ideas and case studies relating to victims of conventional crime and victims outside the remit of criminal law. It encapsulates the domestic and international nature, extent and measurement of victims of crime and harm, together with responses to victims and victimisation as a result of conventional, corporate and state crimes and harms.\nAs part of the Companion series, entries are presented in a user-friendly A-Z format with clear links to related entries and further reading, allowing easy navigation for both students and practitioners. Filling a gap in the market, this is a good source and quick reference point for undergraduates studying a variety of courses in criminology, criminal justice, victimology and other related disciplines.",

                "name": "Quantum Holographic Criminology",
                "subtitle": "Paradigm Shift in Criminology, Law, and Transformative Justice",
                "description": "This book develops an alternative perspective by which we can better theorize in criminology, law, and social justice, and emphasizes a paradigm shift away from the failures of a Newtonian ontology embedded in the workings of our disciplines. It first explains the key concepts of quantum and holography theories, and then shows the relevancy for criminology. Numerous applications are provided to suggest a new direction of thought. No claim, however, of developing a definitive theory is suggested. Cultural criminology is especially useful for re-thinking by integrating emerging concepts of the new sciences. The book argues that scholars should suspend their commitments to Newtonian physics in its linearity, determinacy, and objectification of reality. An alternative construction of social reality can be developed that recognizes the interconnected, dynamic, and information-driven nature inherent in the cosmos. Much of criminology lacks a subject, particularly in empirically driven or positivistic approaches. The book offers an alternative model that argues for a quantized, inter- and intra-subjectively constituted subject. The emerging quantum cognition perspective concerned with the human lexicon is incorporated in this model. The book provides two full chapters on applications to criminology, law, and transformative justice. The final chapter advocates a dynamic, interconnected, processual, information-driven, holistic approach as an alternative to contemporary static structures within which we are embedded.",

In the 'Kangaroo Court', John Hirst investigates what went wrong.\n<p>This is a measured yet unsparing appraisal which interleaves individual cases with compelling legal and moral argument. Hirst takes us deep into the workings of the Court and the domestic apocalypses it sees every day.</p>\n<p>He explores the Court's fervour to uphold the best interests of the child no matter what and traces its chilling consequence- a court where malicious allegations regularly go unpunished. He notes the Court's enormous power over individual lives, as well as its self-proclaimed status as a 'caring court', and wonders at its ability to overlook the defiance of its own authority. In closing, he considers how to reform an institution that has bred antagonism and extremism and too often entrenched paranoia and despair. Lucid and urgent,'Kangaroo Court'is a cautionary tale about the perils of high-mindedness when it comes to dealing with the breakdown of families.</p>\n<p>'When Family Court judges talk piously of the 'caring court', I wish they could hear the roar of pain that their piety has caused.' -John Hirst,'Kangaroo Court'</p>\n<p>This issue also contains correspondence discussing Quarterly Essay 16, Breach of Trust, from Paul Kelly, Paul Bongiorno, Mungo MacCallum, Natasha Cica, Alex Miller, and Raimond Gaita.</p>",

One even called her new home 'the most miserable country in the world'. 1820 descendant Ralph Goldswain retells the tale of the settlers' dramatic first three years in South Africa in lively first-person accounts. Their letters, journals and diaries tell of the dangerous sea voyage, their dismal introduction to their new country, and establishing farms in a difficult environment plagued by drought, floods and locusts. In this engaging read with a delightful narrative touch, we journey with this resilient group of people as they battle nature, an increasingly hostile Xhosa nation and an exploitative colonial government.",
