                "description": "In many ways, the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies (RSIS) is a microcosm of the Singapore brand of government. The DNA of Singapore's policymaking is its forward-looking nature. S. Rajaratnam's trademark is taking the long view while Lee Kuan Yew articulated his wish for leadership foresight and the admiration for 'helicopter quality' candidates in policymaking. This was how RSIS' mission began under the stewardship of the late President S. R. Nathan. RSIS began (as IDSS i.e., the Institute of Defence and Strategic Studies) in 1996 as a form of policymakers' clairvoyant on security matters. To date, it is Singapore's 'frontline' think tank on Asia-Pacific security, counter-terrorism, inter-religious dialogue and non-traditional security threats. The contributors in this edited volume, Forward Engagement: RSIS as a Think Tank of International Studies and Security in the Asia-Pacific, are the stalwarts of the RSIS mission for the past 20 years and the leading lights for the RSIS of the 21st century. These are their reflections for posterity as well as their forward projections for their quasi-diplomatic and intellectual roles in the service of Singapore's national security.",

                "description": "This book provides a thorough, intermediate-level yet concise course in Trigonometry for use in colleges. There are 37 short chapters, each treating one specific theme and containing worked examples and easy exercises. Central to the work are the trigonometric properties of triangle ABC and its associated points. A small appendix contains some Spherical Trigonometry with interesting problems related to the earth; a larger one for enthusiastic students provides further lengthier exercises for extra practice, and full solutions are supplied in the conclusion.Compared with other books on Trigonometry, this book covers the vast spread of topics. Especially, the author reminds readers of the historical importance of theorems enunciated by such contributors as Ptolemy, Euler, Morley, etc. Their names not only invite the readers to appreciate the beauty of these results, but also direct readers to mystery unknown.",

                "description": "<p>This book provides an introduction to the cost modeling for electronic systems that is suitable for advanced undergraduate and graduate students in electrical, mechanical and industrial engineering, and professionals involved with electronics technology development and management. This book melds elements of traditional engineering economics with manufacturing process and life-cycle cost management concepts to form a practical foundation for predicting the cost of electronic products and systems. Various manufacturing cost analysis methods are addressed including: process-flow, parametric, cost of ownership, and activity based costing. The effects of learning curves, data uncertainty, test and rework processes, and defects are considered. Aspects of system sustainment and life-cycle cost modeling including reliability (warranty, burn-in), maintenance (sparing and availability), and obsolescence are treated. Finally, total cost of ownership of systems, return on investment, cost-benefit analysis, and real options analysis are addressed.</p><p>Contents:IntroductionManufacturing Cost Modeling:Process-Flow AnalysisYieldEquipment/Facilities Cost of Ownership (COO)Activity-Based Costing (ABC)Parametric Cost ModelingTest EconomicsDiagnosis and ReworkUncertainty Modeling Monte Carlo AnalysisLearning CurvesLife-Cycle Cost Modeling:ReliabilitySparingWarranty Cost AnalysisBurn-In Cost ModelingAvailabilityThe Cost Ramifications of ObsolescenceReturn on Investment (ROI)The Cost of ServiceSoftware Development and Support CostsTotal Cost of Ownership ExamplesCost Benefit and Risk TradeoffsReal Options AnalysisAppendices:NotationWeighted Average Cost of Capital (WACC)Discrete-Event Simulation (DES)</p><p>Readership: Graduate students and professionals in electrical and electronic engineering, mechanical engineering and industrial engineering.</p><p></p><p>Key Features:Engineering economics treats the analysis of the economic effects of engineering decisions and is often identified with capital allocation problems. Engineering economics provides a rigorous methodology for comparing investment or disinvestment alternatives that includes: time value of money, equivalence, present and future value, rate of return, depreciation, break-even analysis, cash flow, inflation, taxes, etc. While it would be wrong to state that this book is not an engineering economics book (it is), this book focuses on the detailed cost modeling necessary to support engineering economic analyses with the inputs it requires for making investment decisions. However, while traditional engineering economics is focused on the financial aspects of cost and performing discounted cash flow analysis, cost modeling concerns itself with modeling the processes and activities associated with the manufacturing and support of products and systemsThe majority of engineering education (and specifically electronic systems focused education) is almost exclusively focused on designing and manufacturing systems, ignoring the support and sustainment of systems. Part II of this book focuses specifically on post-manufacturing life-cycle costs associated with sustaining systems over long periods of timeThis book is electronics focused. While many aspects of the book could be applied to just about any type of system, the specific example used and topics covered are particularly relevant to electronics</p>",

                "description": "Tumors often start out as a benign growth, but gradually progress toward the malignant stage over a relatively long period of time. Tumor progression results from accumulated genetic mutations and inheritable epigenetic modifications that enable clonal evolution and selection of new clonal populations of tumor cells with aggressive characteristics including metastasis and therapy resistance. Increasing amounts of experimental evidence suggests that tumor microenvironment play a significant role in directing clonal evolution and determining clonal cell fate, which eventually leads to emergence of malignant tumor cell clones. Hypoxia is the most commonly observed feature of tumor microenvironment. Tumor hypoxia is significantly associated with malignant progression and predicts poor patient outcomes. This book provides detailed and up-to-date treaties on the role of hypoxia as a major driving force in tumor microenvironment to elicit cellular adaptation and clonal selection via genetic mutations and epigenetic modifications, to facilitate cancer stem cell maintenance, to enhance metastasis, to augment therapy resistance, and to evade immune surveillance.",

                "subtitle": "",
                "description": "In full generality, minimizing a polynomial function over a closed semi-algebraic set requires complex mathematical equations. This book explains recent developments from singularity theory and semi-algebraic geometry for studying polynomial optimization problems. Classes of generic problems are defined in a simple and elegant manner by using only the two basic (and relatively simple) notions of Newton polyhedron and non-degeneracy conditions associated with a given polynomial optimization problem. These conditions are well known in singularity theory, however, they are rarely considered within the optimization community.Explanations focus on critical points and tangencies of polynomial optimization, Holderian error bounds for polynomial systems, Frank-Wolfe-type theorem for polynomial programs and well-posedness in polynomial optimization. It then goes on to look at optimization for the different types of polynomials. Through this text graduate students, PhD students and researchers of mathematics will be provided with the knowledge necessary to use semi-algebraic geometry in optimization.",

Frustrated by their lack of success so far, and by their increasingly clinical love life, Daidai befriends one of Hiroshis graduate students. New to Los Angeles, Satsuki clings to her Japanese heritage and introduces Daidai to her love of tea. But soon, Satsuki is appearing at their home uninvited, and Daidai grows suspicious. Her worries only increase when Satsukis estranged mother turns up dead in an LA monastery.Spurred by this shocking event, Daidai begins to delve into the death of Satsukis motheran apparent suicide, while Satsuki and Hiroshis friendship seems to deepen.Everything changes when Daidai accompanies Satsuki to Japan to visit her wealthy father in North Western Japan. As Daidai struggles to better comprehend Satsukis troubled family life, the two women are suddenly separated by an earthquake and the resulting chaos from the Fukushima disaster. The tragedy only continues to mount when Satsukis father is discovered dead. Returning to Los Angeles, Daidai acquiesces to Satsukis request to move in with she and Hiroshi. But Satsukis dangerous and erratic behavior is not quelled by this act of generosity, and Daidai suddenly finds in herself in a fight to keep everything she holds dear.",

The book is designed in such a way as to provide a smooth transition between elementary and advanced topics and its modular structure allows for an easy assimilation of the content. Starting from a dedicated chapter on the axiom of choice, subsequent chapters cover Hilbert spaces, linear operators, functionals and duality, Fourier series, Fourier transform, the fixed point theorem, Baire categories, the uniform bounded principle, the open mapping theorem, the closed graph theorem, the HahnBanach theorem, adjoint operators, weak topologies and reflexivity, operators in Hilbert spaces, spectral theory of operators in Hilbert spaces, and compactness. Each chapter ends with workable problems.The book is suitable for graduate students, but also for advanced undergraduates, in mathematics and physics.

                "name": "Reading Orientalism",
                "subtitle": "Said and the Unsaid",
                "description": "<p>The late Edward Said remains one of the most influential critics and public intellectuals of our time, with lasting contributions to many disciplines. Much of his reputation derives from the phenomenal multidisciplinary influence of his 1978 book Orientalism. Said's seminal polemic analyzes novels, travelogues, and academic texts to argue that a dominant discourse of West over East has warped virtually all past European and American representation of the Near East. But despite the book's wide acclaim, no systematic critical survey of the rhetoric in Said's representation of Orientalism and the resulting impact on intellectual culture has appeared until today.<br/><br/>Drawing on the extensive discussion of Said's work in more than 600 bibliographic entries, Daniel Martin Varisco has written an ambitious intellectual history of the debates that Said's work has sparked in several disciplines, highlighting in particular its reception among Arab and European scholars. While pointing out Said's tendency to essentialize and privilege certain texts at the expense of those that do not comfortably it his theoretical framework, Varisco analyzes the extensive commentary the book has engendered in Oriental studies, literary and cultural studies, feminist scholarship, history, political science, and anthropology. He employs \"critical satire\" to parody the exaggerated and pedantic aspects of post-colonial discourse, including Said's profound underappreciation of the role of irony and reform in many of the texts he cites. The end result is a companion volume to Orientalism and the vast research it inspired. Rather than contribute to dueling essentialisms, Varisco provides a path to move beyond the binary of East versus West and the polemics of blame.<br/><br/>Reading Orientalism is the most comprehensive survey of Said's writing and thinking to date. It will be of strong interest to scholars of Middle East studies, anthropology, history, cultural studies, post-colonial studies, and literary studies.</p>",

                "description": "<p>The Black Flags raided their way from southern China into northern Vietnam, competing during the second half of the nineteenth century against other armed migrants and uplands communities for the control of commerce, specifically opium, and natural resources, such as copper. At the edges of three empires (the Qing empire in China, the Vietnamese empire governed by the Nguyen dynasty, and, eventually, French Colonial Vietnam), the Black Flags and their rivals sustained networks of power and dominance through the framework of political regimes. This lively history demonstrates the plasticity of borderlines, the limits of imposed boundaries, and the flexible division between apolitical banditry and political rebellion in the borderlands of China and Vietnam.<br/><br/>Imperial Bandits contributes to the ongoing reassessment of borderland areas as frontiers for state expansion, showing that, as a setting for many forms of human activity, borderlands continue to exist well after the establishment of formal boundaries.</p>",
