                "description": "\"James R. Barkers contributions to the extant literature on one of the most significant transformations in contemporary organizational practice include 1) Embedding the discussion of teamwork within the broader context of organizational and social culture, 2) Broadening the treatment of participative management to include both local control and positive discipline, and 3) Demonstrating the important theoretical and practical links between the concepts of member participation and member identification. As a bonus, readers are introduced to the discursive foundations for fashioning productive conversations about participative management that can be both valid and valuable.\" <br/>--David Whetten, Professor of Management, Brigham Young University <br/><br/>\"James R. Barkers The Discipline of Teamwork makes a number of important contributions simultaneously. It demonstrates the power of good analytical theory, drawing on a classical tradition of writers such as Weber, Durkheim, and Foucault to illuminate the organizational, moral, and discursive realities of a major management change program in an organization. Beyond mere advocacy of a change process, as in the popular management literature, it provides analysis of how and what such changes in process mean for the lived-experience and self-understanding of the people who have to make sense of these changes that consultants and managers advocate.\" <br/>--Stewart Clegg, Faculty of Business,University of Technology, Sydney <br/><br/>\"The Discipline of Teamwork represents a major work at the fulcrum of organizational culture, organizational communication, and social change. Barker spent over two years collecting data through depth participant-observation and intensive interviewing in a high-tech manufacturing company that made and intentional shift in its organizational structure and culture from traditional methods of assembly to the use of self-directed work teams. From his position of trust within the ranks of both employees and management, he documents and analyzes this radical transition, carefully studying how the changes were implemented, their latent and manifest outcomes, and the modification made to them from both bottom and top levels. This work documents a paradigmatic revolution in the business world that has ultimately anticipated and the laided the ground work for the quality management movement and its successor, thinking out of the box.\" <br/>--Patricia A. Adler, University of Colorado <br/><br/>Recent years have brought team-based and collaborative management to the forefront of our organizational leadership. Teamwork has permeated all aspects of the work world and continues to gain momentum. In The Discipline of Teamwork James R. Barker explores the social consequences of this participatory work environment. Writing from the team member perspective, James R. Barker focuses on the human cost of participation and the effects of this discipline on team members. He details how the discipline develops, matures, and creates social consequences for organizational participants, and provides insight into how we can make teamwork a positive experience for all involved. This lively and well-written book will provoke team members, as well as management scholars, students, and executive consultants, to consider how the discipline of teamwork affects them and what they ought to do about these consequences.",

Negotiation agents are broadly defined to include legislators, diplomats, salespersons, sports agents, attorneys, and committee chairsanyone who represents others in a negotiation. Five major negotiation arenas are examined in depth: labor-management relations, international diplomacy, sports agents, legislative process, and agency law. The book concludes with suggestions for future research and specific advice for practitioners. Chapter authors and commentators are leading figures in the field of negotiation. Negotiating on Behalf of Others is a must read for professional negotiators, graduate students, and scholars in the areas of business, public policy, law, international relations, sports, and economics. Negotiating on Behalf of Others is the result of the first of a series of seminars conducted by the faculty of the Program on Negotiation at Harvard on \"complicating factors\" in negotiations. The first of these complicating factors selected for study was the effect of the presence of an agent on the negotiating process.",

Successful Diversity Management Initiatives not only outlines specific steps for a managing diversity process but also discusses the rationale for procedures, identifies potential roadblocks, and explores how barriers could be managed. Patricia Arredondo gives specific examples based on her research and her experiences within organizations so that the reader obtains an integrative and systematic perspective about the issues involved. Reading this book is essential for all management educators, organizational change teams, and consultants in the field interested in getting up-to-speed about the issues. Also, managers and executives who are engaged in gaining competitive advantage through the talents and abilities of the changing workforce and knowing about the needs of their diverse customers, will gain insight into the very real factors affecting their organizations. --Anna Duran, Ph.D, Principal, Anna Duran & Associates & Adjunct Professor, Graduate School of Business, Columbia University \"In this book Dr. Patricia Arredondo really captures the kind of experiences we have had as to what works and what doesnt in shaping a diversity initiative. Her concrete suggestions provide a very useful road map leading to a successful diversity initiative.\" --William Watkins Jr., Executive Vice President, and Director of Economic Development, Narragansett Electric Thousands of organizations are beginning to address the issue of workforce diversity management. This important new book helps answer questions typically raised by these organizations as they face diversity-related change. Why should we do this? How will we know we are being successful? What kind of change can we expect? Successful Diversity Management Initiatives presents specific phases and steps to help plan, direct, and manage strategic organizational development. Serving as a developmental model for change, this model emphasizes on-going evaluation and clarification during each phase and proposes a prototype for measuring both qualitative and quantitative results. Vignettes based on organizational experiences are used to demonstrate how particular steps in the model occur and how they hold generic value. Intended for practical application, the book is supported by case examples, summaries at the end of each chapter that include a checklist for organizational self-assessment, models, and a glossary. Successful Diversity Management Initiatives is appropriate for professionals who have responsibility for designing and implementing programs as well as graduate students in organizational development, industrial psychology, and human resources.",

                "description": "<p>This exciting and unique new book offers a post-modern analysis linking the contemporary social crisis of masculine subjectivity and the law and order crisis over escalating violence. In doing so it examines the major biological, psychological, sociological, and anthropological theoretical models of masculinity and violence, and formulates an integrated theoretical approach to the relationship between violence and masculinity. In essence, the book focuses on violence as a gendered activity - specifically a masculine activity. </p> <p>Early chapters define and theorize both violence and masculinity, and subsequent chapters focus on representations of violence and masculinity in popular culture. Familiar but insightful examples from cartoons, fiction, television, and the movies are used to illustrate the construction of masculinity in popular culture as well as the range of images of violence that dominate our senses.</p> <p>Drawing from diverse literatures and traditions, this engaging book is directed to advanced undergraduate and graduate students as well as professionals in Criminology, Legal Studies, Psychology, Sociology, Gender Studies, and Cultural Studies. Because of its theoretical aspects, it will be of interest to students and scholars in the United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada, as well as in the United States. </p>",

                "name": "The Dark Side of Courtship",
                "subtitle": "Physical and Sexual Aggression",
                "description": "Blending qualitative interviews with current research findings, this timely book explores the \"dark side\" of courtship the negative interactions that take place between dating and courting partners, most notably physical aggression and sexual exploitation. It emphasizes the importance of understanding how power dynamics, verbal aggression, interaction patterns, issues of control, and relationship dynamics are integrally tied to physical and sexual aggression. The authors also examine the contextual factors that encourage the use of physical and sexual aggression in romantic relationships and allow them to continue without necessarily bringing about the demise of the relationship. These contextual factors include patriarchal structures, the power of romance, and patterns of gender socialization. Personal anecdotes from interviews conducted by the authors are interwoven with the interpersonal and contextual framework, as well as the extant literature on physical and sexual aggression during courtship. It is unique in its emphasis on interpersonal dynamics, as the vast majority of the literature on courtship aggression has focused on the role of personality and other intra-individual factors.",
