"description": "Charismatic leaders have proven to be remarkable change agents, able to create or reinvent entire organizations. At the same time, these leaders provide us with lessons about the greatest dangers of leadership. For example, throughout history, certain charismatic leaders have demonstrated a shadow side as master manipulators and purveyors of evil. Charismatic Leadership in Organizations reflects the latest thinking on this seemingly elusive yet remarkable form of leadership. Written by two of the most important scholars on the subject, this volume not only integrates the growing body of research and theory on the subject, but also pushes the frontiers of our knowledge by introducing new theory and insights. It presents readers with a highly comprehensive model of the charismatic leadership process that is documented with extensive empirical research and richly illustrated with case examples of corporate leaders. The book also includes a questionnaire measure of charismatic leadership and suggests an agenda for future research in the field. Written in a highly accessible style, Charismatic Leadership in Organizations will be of interest to professionals, students, and scholars in management, public administration, psychology, political science, sociology, and religion.",

"description": "Arthur M. Horne and Mark S. Kiselica have gathered a large and impressive team of authorities from around the United States and New Zealand to produce a comprehensive volume on counseling boys. The contributing authors address a wide variety of developmental and cultural considerations pertaining to counseling boys, and they offer extremely useful recommendations for helping 11 special clinical populations of boys. I know of no other book on boys that is as broad in its scope or as practical in its approach as is this groundbreaking work.Arnold A. Lazarus, Ph.D., ABPP,Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Psychology, Rutgers University \"This wonderful volume represents the advancing developments of the field, is broad and comprehensive in scope, offers outstanding clinical and practical suggestions, and includes a veritable whos who of counselors and psychologists among its contributors. Mental health professionals and graduate students will treasure this reference work.\" Ronald F. Levant, Ed.D., ABPP, Dean, Center for Psychological Studies, Nova Southeastern University, Ft.Lauderdale, Florida \"The Handbook of Counseling Boys and Adolescent Males fills a gap in the counseling field by providing counselors in schools and community agencies with information that will guide them in expanding their services to the males with whom they work. The developmental background is very helpful to counselors in expanding their understanding of the nature of problems boys experience in growing up; the section on cultural considerations illustrates sensitivity to the varying racial, ethnic intervention, and treatment programs that may be used in schools and community agencies. This book will be an extremely helpful resource for counselors in their work with boys and adolescent males, it is highly recommended for all mental health practitioners.\" --Pamela Paisley, Ed.D The University of Georgia, President, Association of Counselor Education and Supervision \"As we try to understand the violence that has rocked our schools, one common denominator stands out: The perpetrators are all young males. School counselors confirm that there are a lot of angry young men out there. Why are they so angry? What can we do to better understand them? How can we help? This book promises to be a must read for all school counselors.\" Nancy S. Perry, NCC, NCSC, American School Counselor Association \"Arthur M. Horne and Mark S. Kiselica have produced a timely compendium which offers an exciting glimpse at important developments related to boys and men. This well thought out volume boldly ranges beyond conventional boundaries and will be a useful addition to the available literature on boys and men.\"--Don C. Locke, Ph.D., North Carolina State University The Handbook of Counseling Boys and Adolescent Males provides the reader with a context for understanding the developmental dilemmas experienced by male youth and how male development, both adaptive and maladaptive, is shaped by a complex interaction of biological, cultural, and economic forces. This book is organized into three parts. Part I provides the reader with an understanding of how the psychological, career, and athletic development of boys is shaped by a complex interaction of biological, social, cultural, and economic forces. Part II covers cultural considerations pertaining to counseling with African American, Asian American, Hispanic American, Native American, and White, Non-Hispanic boys. Part III addresses special populations of boys, including gay boys, teenage fathers, sexually abused boys, boy sexual offenders, developmentally disabled boys, shy and anxious boys, depressed boys, bullies, male youth gangs, and boy substance abusers.",

The book explores best practice principles by providing a detailed \"inside tour\" of those practices that have been empirically linked with positive outcomes in serviced families. Guterman also discusses in detail ways how home visitation may more adequately address the problem of family substance abuse in reducing child maltreatment risk, and ways visitation can attend to social network and community influences and increase parent empowerment. </p> <p>An essential text for child welfare courses, Stopping Child Maltreatment Before It Starts will also appeal to practitioners and policy makers in the child abuse and neglect field. </p>",

"description": "<p>Community Organizing provides new insight into an important national challenge how to stimulate the formation of genuinely community-based organizations and effective citizen action in neighborhoods that have not spawned these efforts spontaneously. Since Robert Putnams identification of the role of social capital in regional governance and economic development, there has been a virtual industry of interest and action created around the implications of his findings for the development of low-income communities. Yet, there remains a paucity of detailed empirical effort testing and refining his ideas. This book attempts to fill this gap.</p> <p>Community Organizing distills lessons from a national demonstration program that employed a novel approach to community organizing consensus organizing. Consensus organizing enhances social capital, building both stronger internal ties and capacity in low-income communities and fostering new relations (bridges) between residents of low-income communities and larger metropolitan area support communities. </p> <p>Using evaluation research and detailed comparative study of community development activity in three diverse demonstration sites, Ross Gittell and Avis Vidal identify key elements of building social capital, which strongly affect community development: comprehension of community development, credibility of effort and participants, confidence, competence, and constructive critiques of efforts. Other elements are more relevant to program management and implementation and include communication among participants, congruence of program effort, management of inherent contradiction, and adjusting implementation to reflect local context. </p> <p>This book describes the limits and promise of building social capital and will be of interest to community development students and professionals. </p>",

"description": "In my judgment this book in honor of Donald T. Campbell will be very influential and highly cited. . . . It will become a must read for Ph.D. students and scholars in strategy and organization theory. Arie Lewin, Duke University \"The topics in this volume are cutting edge, and the contributors are first-rate. The book is well anchoredDonald T. Campbell has had a profound influence on the field. Moreover, the book is well-conceptualizedsocio-cultural evolution, co-evolution, methods modeling, and epistemology are key issues in organization science right now. Michael Tushman, Harvard University If he were an assistant professor today, what would social science giant Donald T. Campbell be pursuing in the field of organization science? Joel A. C. Baum and Bill McKelvey explore this question in Variations in Organization Science. This volume reveals and celebrates Campbells many contributions to organization science by presenting new variations that stem directly from his work. Rather than analyze Campbells theories, the authors present ideas that Campbell might have pursued if he were currently a doctoral student. This volume is unique in its focus on coevolution and multilevel coevolutionary analysis, as well as in its range of subject matter from empirical studies to leading-edge epistemological discourses. Each of the books four main sections focuses on a major aspect of Campbells legacy: blind variation, selection, and retention; multilevel coevolution; process level analysis and modeling; and epistemology and methodology. In addition, the volume includes a Foreward by Barbara Frankel Campbell and an unusual Appendix: Donald Campbells complete curriculum vitae. Variations in Organization Science should be on the top of the reading list for any organization scientist interested in organizational evolution, change, and competitiveness. This volume will also appeal to any scholar interested in the human and social capital base of firms and how organizational knowledge and learning work to provide the basis of competitive advantage.",
