                "subtitle": "An Ethnography",
                "description": "<p>Addressing a significant void in the extant literature on the topic of domestic violence, Rural Woman Battering and the Justice System presents a thorough and arresting look at the experiences of battered women in rural communities. While living in the rural areas of Kentucky, Neil Websdale conducted his ethnographic research, and he situated the voices of rural battered women at the center of his ethnography. He clearly demonstrates how rural patriarchy and the insidious \"good ol boy network\" of law enforcement and local politics sustain and reproduce the subordinate, vulnerable, isolated position of many rural women. Taking into account that traditional patterns of intervention can often put women in isolated communities at further risk, the author recommends a coordinated multiagency approach to rural battering that is spearheaded by state feminist agencies. The chapter on the difficulties of an educated male researcher working with rural battered women offers a definite methodological plus. Illuminating and accessible, Rural Woman Battering and the Justice System makes a most important and timely contribution to the field. </p> <p>An excellent training resource for anyone working with battered women, especially in rural areas, Rural Woman Battering and the Justice System is highly recommended for law enforcement and criminal justice professionals, practitioners, advocates, shelter personnel, and advanced students in related courses of study, as well as academics and researchers. </p>",

                "description": "Child Abuse brings together experts in both physical abuse and sexual abuse to create one of the few volumes that has addressed innovative approaches to treatment and prevention in these two areas. The resulting compendium of information provides insights into the current psychological perspectives on the causes and treatment of different forms of child maltreatment as well as the delivery of early intervention and prevention services. The book begins in the first part with a conceptual overview of the effect of physical abuse on the life course of children and adults. Chapters on physical abuse also examine recent findings related to child abuse offenders, children who witness domestic violence, treatment of abusive adults, and prevention programs aimed at dating adolescents and pregnant women. Contributors focusing on child sexual abuse note new approaches to the delivery of treatment services for these children as well as current developments in the interface between abuse victims and the court system. Considering the needs of both adult survivors and children, Child Abuse also discusses how child maltreatment interventions can be integrated into broader intervention services. An ideal book for use in professional training and development, Child Abuse will also guide policymakers at state and national levels to emerging new models and programs. This volume is likewise a useful resource for researchers and practitioners in social work, clinical/counseling psychology, mental health, and public health.",

I would highly recommend this book for all scholars of public law because of its richness of information as well as how the essays call into question the common assumptions about what judicial independence is and how it can be protected\" - Law & Politics Book Review</p> <p>This new volume aims to break down the disciplinary barriers that have impeded scholarly analysis of, and public policy debates concerning, a subject of immense importance to the US and other developed and developing democracies. Judicial Independence at the Crossroads: An Interdisciplinary Approach is a path-breaking collection of essays by leading scholars from the disciplines of law, political science, history, economics and sociology. As a result, the essays represent a strongly interdisciplinary perspective that enables the reader to identify common myths in scholarly and public discussions of judicial independence, and to engage more effectively with the key debates. The editors also highlight progress made towards a shared understanding and the considerable gaps in analysis and understanding that remain.</p> <p>This book offers both scholars and politicians a guide to more fruitful research and sounder public policy at a time when federal judicial selection is one of the most contentious political issues in Washington. Given the explicitly comparative perspective of some of the chapters, the volume will be important reading not only for scholars and policy makers in the US but also for those interested in the topic in any other country that seeks to establish or reaffirm the importance of the rule of law.</p> <p>About the Editors</p> <p>Stephen B. "description": "<p>\"This is a truly exceptional collection of contributions on the dynamics of family relationships. The authors not only provide thoughtful state-of-the-art reviews of relevant bodies of literature and methods, but also grapple with thorny conceptual issues and present novel theoretical insights. In doing so, they demonstrate the tremendous progress in thinking about families in the past decade or two and provide guideposts for future theory and research on parent-child relationships.\" </p> <p>- Nancy Eisenberg, Regents Professor of Psychology, Arizona State University</p> <p> </p> <p>\"This forward looking volume will be invaluable to all concerned with parent-child relationships. With chapters written by leading researchers in the field, it focuses on process, and on the agency of both parent and child. The approach is therefore dialectical, changes in either partner continuously leading to change in the other. A must for teachers, researchers and graduate students.\"</p> <p> - Robert A. Hinde, St. Johns College, Cambridge, United Kingdom</p> <p> </p> <p>Handbook of Dynamics in Parent-Child Relations provides an innovative, interdisciplinary perspective on theory, research, and methodology of dynamic processes in parent-child relations. Edited by distinguished scholar Leon Kuczynski, this accessible volume is divided into six parts. Part I concerns dyadic processes in parent-child relationships and provides the conceptual grounding for the volume as a whole. Parts II and III examine the agency of the child and the agency of the parent, respectively. Part IV considers dynamics in the parent-child dyad as they are mediated by or impact on various lifespan, cultural, and ecological contexts. Part V addresses the methodological implications of adopting a dynamic process view of parent-child relations. Part VI weighs future directions for theory, research, and practice.</p> <p> </p> <p>An eminent group of scholars and researchers present a comprehensive exploration of parent-child relationships that includes</p> the nature of change in parent-child interactions; cognitive, behavior, and relational processes that govern parent-child relationships; what makes such interactions and relationships \"work\" the way they do; the dynamics of parent-child relations, including bidirectional influence and human agency; quantitative and qualitative methodology in the context of theory verification and discovery. <p> </p> <p>Handbook of Dynamics in Parent-Child Relations focuses on process rather than outcomes, bi-directional influence rather than parent effects or child effects, and parents and children as agents and actors rather than as static traits or variables. This concern with dynamics represents an emerging research perspective that complements a long-standing alternative tradition primarily concerned with the products of parenting.</p> <p> </p> <p>Interdisciplinary in scope, Handbook of Dynamics in Parent-Child Relations will appeal to academics, professionals, graduate students, and senior-level undergraduates involved with Developmental Psychology, Family Science, Human Ecology, and Family Sociology.</p> <p> </p> <p> </p>",

Comprehensive, systematic, analytic, and very well written, it sets a new high water mark in the social scientific study of religion and life in the African American Community. It will be especially helpful in the teaching of undergraduate and graduate courses in African American history and culture.\"<br/><br/> --Andrew Billingsley, University of South Carolina <br/><br/>The religious faith of African Americans has many avenues of expression. Consequently, there has been a long-standing interest in the nature, patterns, and functions of religion in the lives of this particular ethnic group. African American religious life, in all its forms, is a vibrant, creative, resourceful testament to the power of faith to uplift and sustain in the face of prejudice, discrimination, and exclusion. <br/><br/>Religion in the Lives of African Americans: Social, Psychological, and Health Perspectives examines many broad issues including the structure and sociodemographic patterns of religious involvement; the relationship between religion and physical and mental health and well-being; the impact of church support and the use of ministers for personal issues; and the role of religion within specific subgroups of the African American population such as women and the elderly. Authors Robert Joseph Taylor, Linda M. Chatters, and Jeff Levin reflect upon current empirical research and derive conclusions from several wide-ranging national surveys, as well as a focus group study of religion and coping. <br/><br/>Features and Benefits: <br/> Empirical. Incorporates findings from a total of eight national surveys that contain representative cross-section samples of the adult Black population living in the continental U.S. Additionally, a focus group study conducted by the Program for Research on Black Americans at the University of Michigan Institute for Social Research, provides a rich source of qualitative information about the nature and functions of religion. Interdisciplinary. Although the primary points of view are sociological and psychological, the perspectives represented by the authors transcend disciplinary bounds. Pedagogical. Includes important data sources, tables, recommendations for further reading and resources, end of chapter summaries, and implications for future research that enhance student comprehension. Recommended for students taking courses in racial and ethnic studies, multicultural and minority studies, black studies, religious studies, psychology, sociology, human development and family studies, gerontology, social work, public health, and nursing.",

With a primary emphasis on the contributions of German psychologist William Stern, this book generates a wider appreciation for Sterns perspective on human individuality and for the proper place of personalitic thinking within scientific psychology. The author presents an alternative approach to the logical positivism that permeates traditional psychological thought and methodology making this an innovative, ground-breaking work. </p> <p> </p> <p>Feature and Benefits:</p> Provides book-length treatment of the concept of human individuality in twentieth century scientific psychology, highlighting the historical contributions made by the German psychologist and philosopher William Stern (1871-1938). Critically appraises contemporary thinking about personality in light of historical and methodological considerations. Challenges readers to rethink the problem of human individuality with research that mounts a direct empirical challenge to the long-standing belief that it is meaningless to characterize individuals without comparing them with one another. Concludes with a general discussion of the potential of personalistic thinking both as a foundation for personality theory and as a framework for social thought. <p> </p> <p>Beyond Individual and Group Differences is a dynamic book for academics and scholars in the areas of personality psychology, individual differences, and the history of psychology.</p>",

                "subtitle": "Connections for Family Safety",
                "description": "Part of a comprehensive psychoeducational program for nonoffending parents and partners of sex offenders, this book helps therapists determine if and when children can live safely in homes with known sexual offenders and presents a model for treating the nonoffending members of families who plan reunification. While the authors do not advocate reunification, the book describes a unification plan that keeps family safety through relapse prevention as the first priority. Treating Nonoffending Parents in Child Sexual Abuse Cases begins by bringing the therapist into the confused, anxious, and sometimes shattered world of the nonoffending parent. Guidelines are then offered for conducting a comprehensive family assessment to determine if a family is a realistic candidate for reunification. A structured, group treatment program for the nonoffending parents/partners follows, including treatment module covering such issues as denial, the effects of sexual abuse on children and families, understanding sex offenders and sex offender treatment, and creating realistic family safety plans. Therapists are instructed in conducting follow up couples sessions to engage the nonoffending partner in challenging the offender to prove he is ready to live safely with children. In family sessions with the children, sexual abuse prevention, clarification, and family safety planning are addressed. The book concludes with valuable information on report writing and making responsible recommendations following treatment. Treating Nonoffending Parents in Child Sexual Abuse Cases comes with a copy of the Connections Workbook, the companion manual for the nonoffending parent/partner. The authors, who specialize in treating sex offenders, originally developed and field tested this book with the partners of their own clients. Since 1997, and earlier version of the program has been in use throughout North America. Therapists, probation officers, and CPS workers who work with families that are recovering from incest for have any kind of sex offender as one of their parents will find Treating Nonoffending Parents in Child Sexual Abuse Cases and its accompanying workbook an useful tool in helping a particularly complex and vulnerable client.",

Batterer Intervention Systems responds to this debate with research from a multi-site evaluation of batterer programsthe most comprehensive and extensive evaluation to date. A four-year follow-up of program participants reveals a surprising de-escalation of abuse, a subgroup of unresponsive repeat reassaulters, and the difficulty in identifying the most dangerous men. Conventional batterer counseling appears to be appropriate for the vast majority of men. "description": "<p>As we begin a new millennium, humankind is still plagued by intergroup conflict, racism, prejudice, stereotyping, and discrimination. This book is intended both as supplemental reading for courses and as a practical guidebook for individuals and programs interested in reducing prejudice and improving intergroup relations. It provides the only comprehensive review and compilation of techniques of improving intergroup relations. Theres a huge amount of literature on the causes and nature of prejudice, reflecting great interest in the topic, but the literature on prejudice reduction is more scattered, spread across a range of theoretical and applied sources. This book brings these literatures together, with an emphasis on helping to elucidate what works and why. </p>",

                "description": "<p>This book builds upon a foundation of research literature on incest victims and their families as well as the authors own clinical experience to provide a conceptual framework for intervention and treatment of the non-offending mother. Amply illustrated with case examples, the author, Virginia C. Strand, outlines a treatment model and gives suggestions for specific treatment strategies. Particular emphasis is paid to the context of the mothers situation, and how such factors as social class, ethnicity, age, and education must be taken into consideration when treating these clients. In addition, Strand provides helpful guidance to the therapist whose client must deal with the multiplicity of systems that are involved with intervention, investigation, and prosecution of child abuse cases. This book is a much needed guide for therapists, case workers, and other service providers who work with both the children who are incest victims, as well as their families. </p>",

                "name": "Complex Issues in Child Custody Evaluations",
                "subtitle": "",
                "description": "This text is excellent and very timely. Philip Michael Stahls second volume is the perfect supplement to his Conducting Child Custody Evaluations because it deals with specific issues of great concern to evaluators: parental alienation, allegations of sexual abuse, domestic violence, move-away situations, and high conflict families. The chapter dealing with child considerations is also very well done. His discussion of developmental considerations is clear and supported by the latest research in the field. I also liked his treatment of childrens reaction to parental conflict, weighing the needs of the individual child with the needs of the sibling group, and giving the child a voice while protecting their privacy. I also appreciated his discussion of components of the evaluators recommendation, use of psychological testing, Rosemary Vasquezs discussion of cultural issues, tackling the terror of testifying and ethical issues. Phil Stahl has written a very important text. It is timely, well written, and comprehensive. Nice work!!! --Hugh McIsaac, Oregon Family Institute When performing a custody evaluation, how do professionals deal with the issue of domestic violence? What impact does one parents moving away have on the evaluation? How should an evaluator handle high-conflict divorces? Over the past five to ten years, there has been a significant increase in the use of child custody evaluations by the courts. At the same time, the issues have become more complex and difficult. In this book, the author provides a theoretical and practical understanding of many of the factors that make custody evaluations complex. A key component is the integration of disparate research findings into a comprehensive resource that will enable the evaluator and the court to understand these complex issues. A second component is to provide a thorough understanding of the fact that divorce brings with it a set of complex needs, and evaluators and the courts must develop a paradigm for weighing these needs in a comprehensive manner. This book provides that paradigm.",
