"description": "Examining Filipinx cultural representations in the Midwest since the early twentieth century, Thomas Sarmiento shrewdly considers the impact of American exceptionalism and U.S. imperialism in a region where white, middle class, heterosexual, and Christian is the norm. The Heartland of U.S. Empire offers a cogent analysis of the 1904 St. Louis Worlds Fair and its infamous Philippine Exhibit alongside minor museum displays and archives of Midwesterners in the Philippines. Sarmiento also considers the exile literature of Filipino/American writer Bienvenido Santos as well as the TV shows Glee and Superstore, which provide mainstream visibility of the queer Filipinx Midwest. He employs a queer, decolonial Filipinx methodology that traces how narratives of Americas heartland position Filipinxs in the region as nonnormative due to their racial, gender, sexual, and national statuses. The Heartland of U.S. Empire locates queer Filipinxs in the geographic center of the nation and at the center of cultural narratives, thereby mapping alternative images of diasporic Filipinx identity and experience alongside U.S. regional and national identities, histories, and realities. "description": "Planning effective research investigations requires sophisticated power analysis techniques. This book provides readers with clearly explained tools for using Monte Carlo simulations to estimate the needed sample sizes for adequate statistical power for a variety of modern research designs. Featuring step-by-step instructions, chapters move from simpler cross-sectional designs and path tracing rules to advanced longitudinal designs, while incorporating mediation, moderation, and missing data considerations. Worked-through applied examples with annotated Mplus and R syntax scripts, sample power analysis write-ups, and end-of-chapter suggested readings are also included. The companion website offers Mplus and R code for four additional power analysis models--latent variable moderation, discrete- and continuous-time survival analyses, cross-sectional and longitudinal two-level models, and moderated mediation--as well as supplemental computational materials.",

The book is well researched and the story lines are based on actual events. A fine addition to my library. Marylou Morrow, Flagstaff photographer and historian.</p><p></p><p> I was glad to see the author address some of the issues faced by minority workers in the state after WWII. Were they were heroes one day then a miss- treated labor force the next. The 'red scare' tactics used by many at that time to detract from labor issues was effectively documented. The authors description of the dynamics of small town New Mexico brought back many memories for me as well. John Arsola relations consultant</p><p></p><p></p><p> The story follows the journey of a war orphan adopted by three US soldiers from war torn Germany in the closing days of WWII. The setting is in New Mexico and encompasses events from Statehood in 1912 until the 1970's. This period of New Mexico history saw the emergence of many national events such as labor union organization, women rights, oil and gas development, modernization of farming, communist spy rings with McCarthyism, and the development of the atomic bomb at Los Alamos. The story also includes the challenges faced by the Navajo Reservation during a period of modernization in post WWII New Mexico and Arizona. The author uses very good character development and a sense of humor to weave a very engaging story. Publishers comments... scan or click here to see book trailer.</p>",

But the vibes quickly turn rancid with the first major L in the Garden of Eden, setting off a chain of iconic family dramas. We follow the legendary, if messy, journeys of the patriarchs: Abraham, who gets a life-changing DM from God; Isaac, the somewhat quieter heir; and Jacob, the master finesser who wrestles God and gets a new name (Israel). It all culminates with Joseph, the dreamer whose brothers cancel him, leading to an epic villain-to-hero arc in Egypt that ends with the whole family reunited. Through it all, despite the betrayals, questionable choices, and constant drama, God's covenant promise and main character energy prove unshakable, setting the stage for what's to come.</p>",

This talisman, stolen long ago from the crow clan, grants the owls unnatural longevity and fuels their malevolent plans to eradicate the crows. As Kuno embarks on this daunting mission, he grapples with self-doubt but finds strength in unexpected friendships, particularly with Katrina, a courageous refugee crow who has escaped her own perilous situation. Throughout his journey, Kuno is guided by the wise and mysterious King Crow, who inspires him to embrace his potential. Alongside Moki, a spirited meadowlark, Kuno navigates treacherous terrains and confronts formidable adversaries, including Old Gus, a ruthless hawk leading the raptors in their quest for dominance. The stakes rise further when Kubla, a zealous warrior crow, emerges, intent on claiming the talisman for himself. As Kuno encounters betrayal and danger, he must confront his fears and rise to the occasion. Each trial transforms him from a hesitant participant into a determined hero, embodying resilience and hope. In A Crow's Calling, Kuno's journey illustrates that even the most anxious individuals can discover their inner strength when the survival of their loved ones hangs in the balance, ultimately revealing the power of courage, friendship, and love in the face of adversity.</p>",

Navigate the generation gap and the confounding neuroses of high school faculty and administrators who secretly lust after aging beauty queens, marvel at miraculous sturgeon that scream Yiddish curses, and travel through space, time, and Olde New York in a fantastical tricked-out buggy piloted by the angel of sacred prostitution.</p><p></p><p>Get high among teen Vietnam War protesters and hangers-on at Grace Avenue Park; wait on line at Irving's Delicatessen with boxer Floyd Patterson, then join him on the therapist's couch while the former world champ struggles with post-retirement feelings of inadequacy. This is dedicated in love to a mother and grandmother for all she passed on to me and to her grandchildren. A Century ago, the last of these brave women was born. All have passed away now, having passed the torch on to those of us today. Let us take our love for country, our heritage and work for equality and freedom for all.</p>",
