Yet saturating the book is a note of savage black comedy, the farce of a world made weird by unimaginable violence\" Spectator\n\n\"Uplifting and utterly defiant\" Daily Express\n\n\"No-one with the slightest interest in this war, or the nation on which it is being waged, should fail to read Andrey Kurkov\" Daily Mail\n\n__________\nAndrey Kurkov's war diaries continue a searing, deeply human portrait of a nation reshaped by war.\n\nIn this third volume of Andrey Kurkov's war diaries, Ukraine's greatest living writer chronicles the third year of the full-scale invasion from his home in Kyiv and from journeys all over the countrycapturing moments of horror, resilience, absurdity and grace with unmatched clarity.\n\nChildren on a contested border wear hooded bulletproof vests to school; soldiers write haiku; professional clowns go to war; and the mother of a young soldier, killed in battle, uses his compensation money to create a rehabilitation center for veterans. Roses bloom across Ukraine in quiet tribute to a florist and soldier killed in Avdiivka, remembered by those who once bought his flowers.\n\nThe Dnipro River seems to slow when the first missiles fall, as though nature itself had paused in shock. In Pokrovsk, 7,500 residents refuse to leave a city that no longer existstheir homes obliterated but their will unbroken. A general's seventeen-year-old pet toad becomes an iconic symbol of defiance. And buried beneath a cherry tree, a murdered writer's final diary is recovered, a haunting echo of a silenced voice.\n\nFrom the home front to the trenches, Kurkov captures the rhythms of survivalthe quiet rituals, unlikely joys, unexpected humor and appalling costsin an intimate and deeply moving record of national endurance. Three Years on Fire is a luminous act of remembrance, rich with unforgettable detail and human spirit, from a writer whose voice stands witness to everything Ukraine has lostand everything it refuses to give up.\nFrom the international bestselling author of The Stolen Heart, Death and the Penguin and The Grey Bees\n\n__________\nPraise for Andrey Kurkov's war diaries:\n\n\"Andrey Kurkov [is] one of the most articulate ambassadors to the West for the situation in his homeland.\" Sam Leith, Spectator\n\"Immediate and important ... From the grim incredulity at Russians massing on the border to the displacement of millions of people, this is an insider's account of how an ordinary life became extraordinary. It is also about survival, hope and humanity.\" Helen Davies, The Times\n\"Ukraine's greatest novelist is fighting for his country,\" Giles Harvey, New York Times\n\"The author's on-the-ground account is packed with surprising details about the human effects of the Russian assault ... His voice is genial but also impassioned, never more so than when deploring Putin's efforts to erase Ukrainian culture and history. Ukraine, he says, 'will either be free, independent and European, or it will not exist at all'. That's why the war has to be fought, with no concession of territory. "description": "Spanning the four seasons of a year, \"Necessary Secrets\" tells the story of Dennis (Den) Sparks and his three adult children. Starting with Den contemplating his mortality on the day of his 70th birthday, the year ahead is told from four different points of view. A searing picture of NZ society today, the family deals with love, loss, financial struggles, drugs, domestic violence, and all the issues that Kiwis deal with daily. As he has done in his plays and his screen-writing, McGee turns a spotlight on the relationships and social issues of New Zealanders while making for an entertaining read.",

In Catherine, Essie Fox breathes new life into Wuthering Heights, transforming a gothic masterpiece into a haunting confession of obsession, madness and love that even death cannot end.\nWith a nature as wild as the moors she loves to roam, Catherine Earnshaw grows up alongside Heathcliff, a foundling her father rescued from the streets of Liverpool. Their fierce, untamed bond deepens as they grow until Mr. Earnshaw's death leaves Hindley, Catherine's brutal brother, in control and Heathcliff reduced to servitude.\nDesperate to protect him, Catherine turns to Edgar Linton, the handsome heir to Thrushcross Grange. She believes his wealth might free Heathcliff from cruelty but her choice is fatally misunderstood, and their lives spiral into a storm of passion, jealousy and revenge.\nNow, eighteen years later, Catherine rises from her grave to tell her story and seek redemption.\nEssie Fox's Catherine reimagines Wuthering Heights with beauty and intensity a haunting, atmospheric retelling that brings new life to a timeless classic and lays bare the dark heart of an immortal love.",

"description": "A follow-up to A Christmas Carol, this is the story of a poor ticket porter whose outlook is changed from despair to hope by the spirits of the chimes on New Year's Eve\nAs Trotty's working day as a lowly messenger draws to a close, his daughter, Meg, arrives with her fiance Richard in tow, and they proudly announce their wedding for the following day. This is cause for celebration, although their happiness is tempered by the comments of an alderman and other well-off citizens on the rights of the poor to marry. During the night, Trotty hears the chimes of a church bell and ventures out to climb the belltower. At the top he is greeted by goblins who tell him that he died during the climb and must now spend his time watching his friends and family live out their lives. What he witnesses makes for grim viewing, and Totty finds himself attempting to rescue his daughter from the brink of destruction. He wakes as if from a dream to the bells chiming out the beginning of a new year, and finds that no time has passed and it is New Year's Day. But as he sees his daughter cheerfully preparing for her wedding day, he is baffled as to whether this is just a dream within a dream. Tackling familiar themes of redemption, social injustice, and family, this is a story of hope and contemplation and is a moving festive read well worth discovering.",

"description": "John Sherman & Dhoya, novella and story, are among the earliest of W.B. Yeats's published compositions, begun at his father's prompting when the young poet was living in London in 1888. John Sherman is a poignant and delightful narrative that dramatizes the predicament of a young man in love, troubled by his senses. It is complexly autobiographical, projecting the poet's Self and Anti-self through the contrasted personalites of Sherman and Howard, exalting a yearned-for Sligo in the west of Ireland at the expense of an alien English metropolis. Dhoya is a wonder tale of the heroic age, also set in Sligo, blending Irish mythology with local legend, and anticipating the Celtic Twighlight stories of 1893 and the late Byzantium poems. Published first in 1891 and again in 1908, John Shermand & Dhoya last appeared in America in 1969. This text followed that of the first edition and is accompanied by an Afterword by Eve Patten.",
