Also included are the complete texts from an unfinished project, Apology for Catholic Truth, in which Leibniz writes in the guise of a Catholic. Other writings reflect several of Leibniz's longterm projects: constructing a philosophical defence of Christianity to show the compatibility of its doctrines with reason; undermining philosophies he believed could lead to atheism, in particular those of Hobbes, Descartes, Spinoza; and developing methods for resolving theological disputes.\n\nThis collection traces the evolution of these projects during Leibniz's formative first decade in Hanover (16771686), offering the most comprehensive English-language selection of such writings to date. Strickland has returned to Leibniz's original manuscripts to produce accurate, carefully annotated translations that document textual variations, deletions, and marginalia. Of the 52 texts included, 29 appear in English for the first time, one has never been published in any language, and another has only been partially published in its original form.\n\nIn addition to the translations, the volume features a substantial introductory essay on Leibniz's life, work, and writings on religion and theology from 1677 to 1686, along with detailed explanatory notes on each text, providing context, background, and the rationale for their dating.", "author": "Lloyd Strickland", "slug": "leibniz-philosophical-papers-16771686-3295708-9780198960072", "thumbnail_image": "//redshelf-images.s3-external-1.amazonaws.com/cover_image/9780198960072.jpg", "default_thumbnail_image": "//redshelf-images.s3-external-1.amazonaws.com/thumbnail/default_book_thumbnail.jpg", "product_type": "book", "product_id": "3295708", "product_url": "/app/ecom/book/3295708/leibniz-philosophical-papers-16771686-3295708-9780198960072", "bisac_codes": [ "PHI016000" ], "items_count": null, "identifiers": { "EISBN13": "9780198960072", "EISBN10": "0198960077" }, "drm": null, "cover_image": null, "default_cover_image": null, "book_type": null }, "relationships": { "lowest_offering": { "data": { "type": "offerings", "id": "00010037626174" } } } }, { "type": "Product", "id": "00010003295707", "attributes": { "name": "Colonial Carcerality", "subtitle": "A Spatial History of the British Colonial Prison in India", "description": "Prison construction was among the most important infrastructural changes brought about by British rule in India. It introduced India to a radically new system of punishment based on the spatial experience of architecture as confinement. Unlike prisons in Europe and the United States, where moral reform was cited as the primary objective of incarceration, prisons in colonial India mobilized confinement as a way of separating and classifying criminal types in order to stabilize colonial categories of difference. Reconciling the ideas of liberalism with those of imperialism, colonial officials outfitted their prisons with infrastructure to support remunerative prison labor as a mechanism of reform. However, prisoners and other social actors found opportunities to resist and critique this new colonial system. In the twentieth century, the colonial prison came to symbolize the tyranny of British rule for anti-colonial activists.\n \n Colonial Carcerality: A Spatial History of the British Colonial Prison in India examines the vast archive of material related to the space and spatial experience of prisons produced during British colonial rule in India. By bringing official government records of architectural plans, drawings, and photographs into conversation with popular representations ranging from paintings and prints to literature, Waits demonstrates that the colonial Indian prison was not simply a fixed architectural arena where events unfolded. Rather, prison space was contingent upon and held together by shifting narratives and a multitude of actors, including the prisoners themselves. The book offers a means to destabilize the colonial prison as a static historical space by acknowledging the various actors involved in prison production. In tackling this spatial history, Colonial Carcerality makes a larger case for the crucial role that prisons as spatial forms played in constituting the colonial project and the necessity of writing histories that recognize historical space as an unfinished cultural object.", "author": "Mira Rai Waits", "slug": "colonial-carcerality-3295707-9780198995708-mira-rai-waits", "thumbnail_image": "//redshelf-images.s3-external-1.amazonaws.com/cover_image/9780198995708.jpg", "default_thumbnail_image": "//redshelf-images.s3-external-1.amazonaws.com/thumbnail/default_book_thumbnail.jpg", "product_type": "book", "product_id": "3295707", "product_url": "/app/ecom/book/3295707/colonial-carcerality-3295707-9780198995708-mira-rai-waits", "bisac_codes": [ "HIS003000" ], "items_count": null, "identifiers": { "EISBN13": "9780198995708", "EISBN10": "0198995709" }, "drm": null, "cover_image": null, "default_cover_image": null, "book_type": null }, "relationships": { "lowest_offering": { "data": { "type": "offerings", "id": "00010037626168" } } } }, { "type": "Product", "id": "00010003295706", "attributes": { "name": "Remembering the Wars of Religion", "subtitle": "Conflict and Coexistence in Early Modern France", "description": "In the aftermath of civil war, often the most daunting task is to reconcile former opponents who continue to demand justice--or even vengeance--for wartime suffering. Remembering the Wars of Religion offers a historical perspective on the painful legacy of civil war by focusing on memories of violence and victimhood after the French Wars of Religion. Officially, these wars ended in 1598, when the Edict of Nantes proclaimed peaceful coexistence between Catholics and Protestants, and ordered them to bury the memory of the troubles that had begun in 1562. Below the surface, however, the conflict would simmer for generations, as neither side was able to forgive and forget the violence they had suffered. \n\nMoving away from the corridors of state power in Paris to the cities of Lyon, Montpellier, and La Rochelle, Remembering the Wars of Religion examines the local memory wars between Catholics and Protestants as they resurfaced throughout the seventeenth century. David van der Linden shows that the Wars of Religion left behind a kingdom divided by memory: Catholics and Protestants developed sectarian narratives of the troubles, victimizing their own community while assigning blame to the other. The massacres, looting, material losses, and forced displacement that had punctuated the wars proved impossible to forget, let alone forgive, as vindictive memories were continuously reconstructed by later generations. This constant weaponizing of the past undermined the state-led process of peacebuilding and the practice of toleration in France's biconfessional communities. Ultimately, these memories of victimhood fed a new cycle of violence during the reign of Louis XIV, who in 1685 revoked the Edict of Nantes and forced his Protestant subjects to convert to Catholicism. \n\nRemembering the Wars of Religion thus offers a fresh perspective on the challenge of religious coexistence and reconciliation, both past and present. It shows that besides state policies of intolerance and ideological differences rooted in the Reformation, it was the manipulation of wartime memories by subsequent generations that fuelled long-term animosity.\n\nThis is an open access title available under the terms of a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 International licence. It has been a base for high-quality research as well as important meetings, including those held under the famous 'Chatham House rule', meaning that information disclosed may be used publicly but without attribution. \n\nChatham House covers the first 100 years of the Institute's history in three sections: between the two World Wars; the period from 1945 until the end of the Cold War; and the time from the fall of the Berlin Wall up to 2020. Using the Institute's archives as well as public documents, secondary works, and interviews where possible, the contributors have explored the main themes of Chatham House's work over the last century: empire, economic crisis and appeasement between the wars, post-war reconstruction, decolonisation, Europe and strategy after 1945, climate, identity politics, and the foreign policies of the UK and USA after 1989. Written by two experienced commercial barristers, it combines rigorous analysis with practical insights drawn from years of experience. It does not follow the strict structure of the Civil Procedure Rules (or international instruments), but rather the sequence in which issues typically arise in practice.\n\nThe text provides detailed guidance on service of the claim form (and other documents) within the jurisdiction of England and Wales and internationally. It includes dedicated sections on both service within and out of jurisdiction, as well as the practical mechanics of effecting service abroad (including under the Hague Service Convention). Readers will also find guidance for more complex situations, including 'saving applications' to extend time for service, seeking alternative service, or even dispensing with the procedure. Finally, there is coverage of linked topics, including the commencement of proceedings and timing, as well as service issues that arise from the defendant's perspective, including the process and law for challenging service and jurisdiction pursuant to CPR Part 11.\n\nFully aligned with the latest amendments to the CPR, the international position, and case law, this work offers clarity on these intricate rules and practical guidance for their application. While Barnfield has often been dismissed as an imitative poet, this book sheds new light on Barnfield's imaginative engagement with classical and contemporary texts, presenting him as a subtly subversive poet who consistently inhabits poetical models, genres, and tropes only to disrupt them from within. Reading Barnfield's oeuvre against the backdrop of his cultural environment and his education, this work unveils the poet's deconstructive practices and his ironic--but deeply knowledgeable--engagement with the classics, often used as a tool to subvert self-serving and exemplary interpretations of texts from classical antiquity as taught by contemporary grammar schools. \n\nThis monograph argues that the works of Barnfield reveal a sophisticated understanding of contemporary poetical models and practices, which he mimics while also upending their usual poetic force: the poet that emerges from this study is not just sexually non-conformist, but also ironically subversive in his approach to institutions such as the education system and the monarchy, sceptical in his use of poetic tropes, and imaginative in his engagement with the classical tradition.", "author": "Massimiliano Riviera", "slug": "richard-barnfield-and-queer-classicism-in-elizabethan-england-3295701-9780198995104-massimiliano-riviera", "thumbnail_image": "//redshelf-images.s3-external-1.amazonaws.com/cover_image/9780198995104.jpg", "default_thumbnail_image": "//redshelf-images.s3-external-1.amazonaws.com/thumbnail/default_book_thumbnail.jpg", "product_type": "book", "product_id": "3295701", "product_url": "/app/ecom/book/3295701/richard-barnfield-and-queer-classicism-in-elizabethan-england-3295701-9780198995104-massimiliano-riviera", "bisac_codes": [ "LIT019000" ], "items_count": null, "identifiers": { "EISBN13": "9780198995104", "EISBN10": "0198995105" }, "drm": null, "cover_image": null, "default_cover_image": null, "book_type": null }, "relationships": { "lowest_offering": { "data": { "type": "offerings", "id": "00010037626132" } } } }, { "type": "Product", "id": "00010003295700", "attributes": { "name": "Person- and Family-Centered Care in Audiology", "subtitle": "Incorporating Counseling and Psychosocial Support in Hearing Care", "description": "Person- and Family-Centered Care in Audiology provides practicing professionals and future hearing care professionals with essential information on how to optimize outcomes by being responsive to individual client experiences and needs. In doing so, it acknowledges the rights of local communities to make choices about their own future, have attachments to their own place and other local people, and finally, participate in political decisions and hold property. It builds a compelling case for everyday justice in India's coal transition through three kinds of evidence: testimonies collected from the same individuals over more than two decades, beginning in the late 1990s, to present a temporal view of their altered livelihoods and worldviews; a detailed examination of coal production and transport by various agents and unconventional labour arrangements therein; and the degradation of the landscape and decay of peasantry in older coal mining regions situated near the Jharkhand region in eastern India. In turn the contributors question how such frameworks shape a community's self-perception, its economics and politics. Guided by the general framework of Anderson's theory of nationalism and the outsider, such issues are explored in related ways throughout each of the contributions. Each contribution focuses on social, economic, or political issues that have significantly shaped or influenced dominant elements of cultural memory and the construction of identity in the biblical texts. Together the contributions present a larger proposal: the broad contours of memory and identity in the Bible are the products of a collective desire to reshape the social-political world.", "author": "Jeremiah W.
