                "description": "From Getting Started to Graduation: A Student Guide to the EdD, a volume in The Coming of Age of the Education Doctorate Series book series, pulls back the curtain on the hidden curriculum of the EdD experience for students, fully supporting their journeys by making what is too often anxious and abstract more clear and concrete. Drawing from years of experience from designing and directing an EdD program, the authors provide an end-to-end playbook for students to draw from as they navigate their own EdD program of choice.<br><br>Part I focuses on getting started. The book begins with an establishment of the why behind getting an EdD and how this is a distinct and unique experience unlike other graduate degrees. It pushes readers to think beyond the title, encouraging them to drill down into their core motivation for pursuing not just a degree but a transformative experience. Readers will then learn about finding the match quality between their goals and aspirations and the myriad program choices available to them. Once students have winnowed down their choices and found their fit, they will be coached on how to build survival systems that will help them thrive from the onset to the finish line. This includes learning how to pace themselves, how to lean on friends and family, how to create contingency plans, and how to create helpful constraints that make room for work-life balance. The book closes Part I with helpful tips for time and resource management, as well as how to build routines and habits that allow them to be kind of their future selves.<br><br>Part II explicitly explores how to navigate this years-long quest and stay the course. Readers will learn how to get curious and keep that door open across coursework in order to allow for innovative and creative ideas to flourish and eventually lead to fusionthe key to creative thinking. With the door opened to ideas and exploration, the book sets the stage for how to become a scholar-practitioner through key habits of mind such as the what-if and maybe mindset and tackling the tough task of synthesis. Part II ends with the call to team up and to take this winding road together. The EdD experience can be lonely if students go it alone, and the volume explains how and why teaming up is not just nice but necessary to persevere as the way to reach the finish line.<br><br>Finally, Part III pivots to helping students survive the intensive thinking, researching, and writing demands of the dissertation. Readers will tap into years of tips and tricks on how to break this mystifying and monstrous project into sizable and achievable small steps that fuel motivation for the long haul so that students avoid burnout during the final push as they near defending their projects and crushing their comps. When finished, EdD students will be able to leverage what is too often hidden from students and draw from the concrete examples, strategies, stories, and templates therein in order to start strong and finish strong.<br><br>Perfect for courses such as: Introduction to Research; Research Methodology; Introduction to the EdD; The Scholar-Practitioner; Exploring Problems of Practice; Becoming a Change Agent",

In Picking Winners, editors Lawrence R. Jacobs and Desmond King curate a selection of chapters with innovative theoretical frameworks and new research about political institutions and organized interests to demonstrate that central banks and financial regulators are not neutral servants of the \"public good.\" \n\nThe research introduced here spans several countries and includes findings from interviews with senior government officials and financiers. In Picking Winners, the contributors reveal how theoretically independent central banks and financial regulators are often swayed instead, by deeply resourced financial interests, the values and perspectives of capital over those of wage earners, and institutional designs that are biased to favor those with greater capital and income.",

                "description": "Japanese myths present a significant barrier to entry for the Western reader. The primary sources are arcane, and their translations are not accessible to the non-specialist. Japanese deities (kami) have multiple, long names, and the myths exist in different and conflicting versions. Finally, the sheer number of kami makes grasping the pantheon difficult. \n\nJapanese Mythology: A Guide presents key Japanese myths in a format that is both rigorous and readable. Matthieu Felt brings together Japanese myths as they appear in the oldest extant sources and the various methodologies that have been used to study these myths during the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Sources are indicated for readers wishing to do further research with original texts or to use Japanese myths in a comparative capacity.",

                "description": "The \"problem of the twentieth century\" was one of the most important factors in the development of American modernism. W. E. B. Du Bois, of course, identified that problem as \"the color line\" a phrase for the broad array of laws and practices that promulgated legal segregation, cultural separation, and racial antagonism in the US from the end of Reconstruction through the Civil Rights era. A more familiar name, borrowed from the popular tradition of blackface minstrelsy, personified this elusive but ever-present racial regime: Jim Crow. Taking as its starting point the contemporaneity of the Jim Crow era and the modernist era in art and culture, Jim Crow Modernism explores how these phenomena informed one another, and how artists and thinkers on both sides of the color line worked in and against the \"separate but equal\" landscape and the organizing logic of Jim Crow. \n\nThis collection of new essays by prominent scholars in several fields-from American literary studies to film, media, art history, politics, and performance-provides a broad and deep analysis of this vital aspect of modern cultural history. Contributors address well known modernist figures like T. S. Eliot, William Faulkner, Langston Hughes, Zora Neale Hurston, Ann Petry, and Wallace Thurman, as well as many others, from the Jamaican-American writer Claude McKay to the Japanese-American artist Isamu Noguchi to the Afro-Latino writer Piri Thomas, whose peripatetic lives and careers initiated them into far-ranging traditions and contexts. At the same time, Jim Crow Modernism reaches well beyond the segregated US South to examine national and global spaces, networks, and migrations, from New York and Los Angeles to the Caribbean, Europe, Africa, and Asia.",

                "description": "Qualitative methods are increasingly seen as key to addressing critical public health problems. How should instructors introduce qualitative methods to public health students and prepare them to conduct and critically engage in a meaningful way? Teaching public health students about qualitative research is more than just training students to run a focus group or explaining how to know how many in-depth interviews are \"enough\". It starts with helping students understand the power of qualitative methods and why they can be useful in population health.\n\nDesigned as a resource for instructors teaching qualitative methods courses and classes for public health audiences, Teaching Qualitative Research in Public Health offers practical, creative ideas for designing both introductory and advanced courses and addressing the diverse learning goals of public health students inside and outside of the formal classroom. Written by experienced educators and qualitative researchers, this book discusses ways in which faculty can assist students in exploring different qualitative methods, how they should be undertaken, and how findings from qualitative studies can be analyzed and disseminated to inform public health programs and policies. \n\nThis teaching companion offers numerous adaptable strategies, classroom-tested activities, and expert guidance to help instructors tailor their courses to diverse learning objectives and educational environments. With a focus on experiential learning, it equips educators to prepare the next generation of public health professionals with a strong foundation in qualitative research. Whether you're teaching a semester-long course, leading short-term training, or mentoring students in applied research, this book provides the tools needed to foster deep engagement and critical thinking in qualitative public health research.",

                "subtitle": "",
                "description": "In 1868 Japan opened its borders to the outside world and began a rapid modernization process which included importing European musical instruments, compositional practices, and repertoire. The operas and prose of Richard Wagner trickled into Japan during this time and, as in other parts of the world, agents in Japan manipulated the composer's prose and musical works to suit ideologies ranging from the fascist to the frivolous. \n\nThrough the lens of global history, Japanese cultural studies, and musicology, this book presents a new way of understanding Wagnerism as it filtered through modern Japanese culture. Wagnerism is entangled in modernity, and in Japan these entanglements surfaced not only on the operatic stage, but also in sheet music, film, and popular literature. Author Brooke McCorkle Okazaki documents Wagner's opera premieres and utilizes mass media--such as film, magazines, and comics--to explore the interplay of modernity and Wagnerism in Japan. Okazaki first situates the discussion in the context of global historical methodologies, demonstrating how the story of Wagner's reception in Japan models a non-Eurocentric approach to one of musicology's most canonical composers. She then presents a series of case studies that consider how Wagnerism shaped individuals and institutions in Japan beginning from the late nineteenth century and to the present.",

                "description": "The Future is Fiction is the first cultural history of the idea that people have an obligation to protect the world for future generations. While political philosophers have regarded intergenerational justice as an important field of study since the 1970s, the history of modern forms of obligation to the future has received almost no attention. This book traces the evolution of the Anglo-American concept of intergenerational justice, from its origins in eighteenth-century democratic revolutions to its flourishing in the 2000s. Thus, it illuminates the contours of a political conviction that has shaped modern culture.\n\nMargolis's central claim is twofold: first, that fiction's capacity to imagine counterfactual worlds has made the most significant contribution to contemporary understandings of intergenerational justice; and second, that this contribution has been misunderstood. Rather than inspiring political change, fiction demonstrates that complex societies will inevitably clash over what counts as a good future and what should be done to bring this future into being.\n\nFrom nineteenth-century utopian novels like James Fenimore Cooper's The Crater and Mary E. Bradley Lane's Mizora, to post-nuclear war dystopias, like Russell Hoban's Riddley Walker, and Walter Miller's A Canticle for Leibowitz, to recent fiction about endangered children like Toni Morrison's Paradise, Suzanne Collins's The Hunger Games, and Kazuo Ishiguru's Never Let Me Go, the tradition of future-oriented fiction recognizes that our obligation to the future is not the solution to an ethical problem, but an ethical dilemma in its own right.",

                "description": "Armed conflict today involves a plethora of non-State actors including armed groups, private military companies, and hackers operating in the cyber domain. Frequently, these non-State actors act in a way that violates international law, for example by harming civilians, and they commonly act with the benefit of some form of State support. This raises critical questions about State responsibility. \n\nAttribution of Non-State Actor Conduct During Armed Conflict explores when and how international law attributes non-State actor conduct to a State, thereby triggering that State's international responsibility. Focusing on the six rules of attribution outlined in the International Law Commission's Articles on State Responsibility, the book provides a rigorous analysis of their practical application in the context of armed conflict. Using detailed case studies from the conflicts in Syria, Ukraine, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, it examines each of the rules of attribution in turn, demonstrates when they would apply, and evaluates their effectiveness in holding States accountable for non-State actor conduct performed on their behalf. \n\nCritically assessing the legal and practical limitations of existing frameworks, the book argues that the predominant interpretation of the rules of attribution leaves an accountability gap, which enables States to act via proxy in a manner they could not lawfully operate via their own State organs. Combining doctrinal clarity with real-world relevance, it investigates how the inadequacies in the regulation of States' support to non-State actors in conflict situations should be remedied.",

                "description": "An incisive analysis of one of the most disruptive forces in modern American politics, The Right-Wing Idea Factory is essential reading for anyone seeking to understand the fundamental transformation of conservatism in the Trump era and beyond.\n\nWhile Donald Trump's 2024 re-election was hailed by many as a personal triumph, political scientist Donald F. Kettl argues it marked the apex of a movement that began long before Trump entered politics--and one that will continue to shape the American landscape long after he's gone.\n\nIn The Right-Wing Idea Factory, Kettl traces the rise of a revolutionary political force that has redefined the American right. Fueled by soft money and amplified by social media, a network of determined activists and organizations worked to dismantle traditional free-market conservatism and replace it with a populist agenda rooted in cultural and social issues. From abortion and gender to critical race theory, book bans, immigration, and the \"deep state,\" this movement built a powerful new political base--one designed not just to win elections, but to reshape the rules of governance for generations.\n\nKettl reveals how this idea factory has profoundly influenced policy at every level of government, driving polarization and upending long-standing political norms. With sharp insight and deep research, he offers a vital account of how the American right has evolved--and what that means for the future of democracy.",
