Forget the legacy of moderate conservatism promoted by Dwight Eisenhower. Todays conservatism, according to Robert Brent Toplin, has taken a decidedly radical turn.

Toplin offers an intriguing critique of this fast-growing movement that resembles religious fundamentalisma rigid true believers mindset that dismisses opposing views and leaves almost no room for dialogue. Toplin observes that the rights orthodox approach represents a significant rejection of the more open-minded and practical outlook that characterized both liberal and conservative politics in earlier years.

Toplin considers three major subgroups within radical conservatism: stealth libertarians, who espouse free markets and small government, culture warriors, who crusade for morality and values, and hawkish nationalists, who favor military solutions in foreign affairs. He points out that, whatever their differences, these groups manage to unite behind a common loathing. Conservatives demonize liberals, blaming them for most everything they dislike in American life. But, as Toplin shows, their view of liberals has little to do with reality, for it treats everyone from the center to the far-left as a liberal and equates liberal ideas with extremism.

When Americans talk about radical conservatism, they usually think of strident commentators on radio and television such as Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, and Ann Coulter. Toplin offers a much broader picture of the radical, fundamentalist mentality. He shows that a religious-like approach to political ideas can also be found in the thinking of prominent scholars, journalists, and public officials such as Milton Friedman, William F. Buckley, Irving Kristol, Allan Bloom, George Will, Fred Barnes, William J. Bennett, and Ronald Reagan. Toplin finds political fundamentalism at work, too, in media outlets like the Fox News Network and the Wall Street Journal and at think tanks such as the Heritage Foundation, the American Enterprise Institute, and the Cato Institute.

Offering a roadmap of the radical right's emergence over the past half century, Toplin reveals how enthusiasm for a conservative faith helped to erect a bully pulpit in an increasingly powerful political church.
", "author": "Robert Brent Toplin", "slug": "radical-conservatism-3288856-9780700639243-robert-brent-toplin", "thumbnail_image": "//redshelf-images.s3-external-1.amazonaws.com/cover_image/9780700639243.jpg", "default_thumbnail_image": "//redshelf-images.s3-external-1.amazonaws.com/thumbnail/default_book_thumbnail.jpg", "product_type": "book", "product_id": "3288856", "product_url": "/app/ecom/book/3288856/radical-conservatism-3288856-9780700639243-robert-brent-toplin", "bisac_codes": [ "POL010000" ], "items_count": null, "identifiers": { "EISBN13": "9780700639243", "EISBN10": "0700639241" }, "drm": null, "cover_image": null, "default_cover_image": null, "book_type": null }, "relationships": { "lowest_offering": { "data": { "type": "offerings", "id": "00010037416883" } } } }, { "type": "Product", "id": "00010003288855", "attributes": { "name": "The Social Contract in America", "subtitle": "From the Revolution to the Present Age", "description": "
Because most Americans believe that government requires the consent of the governed, the idea of the social contract may come as close to a public philosophy as weve ever had. And, as Mark Hulliung reminds us, we have frequently fought our greatest political battles by wielding one or another version of social contract theory.

Hulliungs book is the first to examine the role of the social contract across the entire sweep of American history, well beyond the Revolution and Founding periods. While he pays close attention to the contested versions of the social contract from 1765 to 1861, he also underscores its relevance after the Civil War, from late nineteenth-century land reform to the rights revolution of the late twentieth century.

By considering this lengthy timeline, Hulliung demonstrates the life and death of what may be the most expansive and persistent form in our countrys political discourse, one that has figured in virtually all major controversies in American history. He shows how it has been enlisted by advocates of seemingly every major cause, from Henry George to Martin Luther King and Justice Clarence Thomas, whose view that constitutional authority rests in the consent of the people of each individual state, rather than of the nation as a whole, echoed the version of the social contract once held by southern slave owners.

Hulliung treats the social contract as not one theory but several, considering the Americanization of Grotius and Pufendorf as well as Locke. He examines alternative readings of the contract in the struggles between claims of alienable versus inalienable rights; between consent given once and for all versus consent reaffirmed with each generation; and between the sovereignty of the people in various states versus the sovereignty of the people of the nation.

Innovative and provocative, Hulliungs study clearly shows that, until we come to terms with the centrality of the social contract in American historyand the significance of its possible demisesomething essential will be missing from our accounts of the past and our understanding of the present.
", "author": "Mark Hulliung", "slug": "the-social-contract-in-america-3288855-9780700639809-mark-hulliung", "thumbnail_image": "//redshelf-images.s3-external-1.amazonaws.com/cover_image/9780700639809.jpg", "default_thumbnail_image": "//redshelf-images.s3-external-1.amazonaws.com/thumbnail/default_book_thumbnail.jpg", "product_type": "book", "product_id": "3288855", "product_url": "/app/ecom/book/3288855/the-social-contract-in-america-3288855-9780700639809-mark-hulliung", "bisac_codes": [ "POL010000" ], "items_count": null, "identifiers": { "EISBN13": "9780700639809", "EISBN10": "0700639802" }, "drm": null, "cover_image": null, "default_cover_image": null, "book_type": null }, "relationships": { "lowest_offering": { "data": { "type": "offerings", "id": "00010037416881" } } } }, { "type": "Product", "id": "00010003288854", "attributes": { "name": "Paving the Way", "subtitle": "New York Road Building and the American State, 1880-1956", "description": "
Winner: Abel Wolman Award

New York State Archives Annual Award for Excellence in Research

Most historians have credited New Deal initiatives in economic regulation and social welfare policy with bringing about the modern American state. Michael Fein now reveals the surprising story of how road building paved the way to the modern state during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and how public works policy emerged as a third critical pillar in support of state building.

Paving the Way shows that the growing transportation needs of a steadily industrializing nation reconfigured state politics, bringing about a revolution in governance as it reshaped the landscape. Examining state and local policy developments from half a century before the New Deal, Fein describes how the transition from rutted wagon trails to smooth highways shifted road-maintenance responsibility from local residents to state engineers. Focusing on New York State, a national leader in infrastructure development, Fein demonstrates that its citizens gradually became more comfortable with state bureaucracy because it resulted in better roads.

This conferral of political legitimacy on state engineers by the general populace proved instrumental in the consolidation of engineers power, translating their professional expertise into a new kind of politics. Fein charts five distinct road-building policy regimes to explain how a basic function of governanceproviding public waysevolved from 1880 to 1956. He also explores the contested nature of these regime changes, as cycling and automobile clubs, construction and real estate interests, hard-nosed agrarians, urban bosses, and professional engineers sought to shape highway policy to their advantage.

Fein argues that these state-local power negotiations were important rehearsals for the overall centralization of bureaucratic authority in the mid-twentieth century. Although other traditionally local policy concerns such as education and social welfare would undergo similar transformations, road building was the first major policy area in which older relations between citizens and governing institutions were replaced by modern intergovernmental arrangements.

Paving the Way reminds us that what we take for granted today as a basic function of government bureaucracy was once an open and even controversial question. It offers a new perspective on federal power, arguing that the modern American state rested on the rise of a more complex federalism than has been supposed.
", "author": "Michael R.
