"name": "The Theological Promise of Religious Diversity",
                "subtitle": "Nicholas of Cusas Vision",
                "description": "This book draws the recent approach to religious diversity known as relational pluralism into dialogue with Nicholas of Cusa's mystical masterpiece, On the Vision of God, to offer an imaginative way to make theological sense of religious diversity. This is theology that views religious diversity as promising rather than problematic. God in Perspective examines how the familiar Christian theological responses to religious diversity known as the exclusivist, inclusivist, and pluralist models, along with their variants, reflect either modernity's totalizing epistemology, by upholding the pre-eminence of a single religious tradition, or postmodernity's decentering epistemologies, by upholding the relativity of all traditions. God in Perspective seeks a space beyond that stalemate between common-ground and incompatibility, beyond modern homogeneity and postmodern fragmentation. By offering a fresh reading of Nicholas of Cusa's vision and drawing on the best scholarship in contemporary theologies of religious diversity, God In Perspective presents a theological framework that enables people of diverse traditions to hold to the particularity of their beliefs and yet learn from those who stand in a different place, discovering a God who is revealed in and through multiplicity.",

                "description": "
A concise, colorful, and convincing account of capitalisms rise to global dominance.
\n
Today, a vast majority of us live under the economic system called capitalismit touches almost every aspect of our lives, and most people alive have never known another. Yet, a cursory look at the world around us reveals that things cant stay this way forever: an economy built on infinite amassing and consumption of resources is at odds with a finite planet. How did this happen? As the economic historian Trevor Jackson argues in this powerful book, It wasnt always capitalism, it didnt have to be capitalism, and capitalism didnt have to be this way.
\n
With a firm grasp on history and economics and a keen eye for the telling anecdote, Jackson explains where capitalism came from, how it spread across the globe, and how it came to be the dominant way of organizing life. He traces capitalisms development from the accidental construction of an international monetary system to the creation of banking, the emergence of a new form of slavery in the eighteenth century, fossil-fuel industrialization, and finally the global capitalist system spread by imperialism in the nineteenth century. Along the way, readers learn about the surprising role of Chinese mulberry trees, Dutch cheese, whale blubber, imperial gin and tonics, Spanish conquistadors, Mexican mine workers, and English bankers in the history and development of capitalism.
\n
Full of memorable characters and lively vignettes as well as sweeping quantitative analysis and historical synthesis, The Insatiable Machine makes clear that capitalism is neither a natural, permanent, nor inevitable feature of human life but rather an economic system that has a history. And just as it was made by people, it can also be unmade by them.
",

                "description": "
\"This book, I suspect, will detonate over certain corners in America.... Darkology is a major and thrilling work of American history.\" Dwight Garner, New York Times Book Review
\nAs Heard on NPR's Fresh Air: \"Quite enlightening.\" Terry Gross
\n\"Tremendous.... Barnes has corralled the chaos, contradiction, and surprise of American social reality; evaded mythology; and made... the unwritten legible.... [A] painfully necessary autopsy of the nations soul.\" Walton Muyumba, Boston Globe
\nNamed one of the Best Books of the Month by the New York Times, TIME, and Kirkus Reviews
\n
A groundbreaking history, decades in the making, that chronicles how blackface dominated American society culturally, financially, and racially for nearly two centuries.
\nNever before has the disturbing story of blackface and its piercing reflection of American society been so comprehensively told. With Darkology, Princeton historian Rhae Lynn Barnes meticulously unravels the complex, subterranean, and all-too-often expunged history of Darkologythe insidious study, commodification, and dehumanization of Black life, through which performers caricatured the enslaved and formerly enslaved for their supposed subservience and happy demeanor.
\n
\nGiven the extraordinary research reflected in Darkology, its not surprising that Barnes spent twenty years tracking down fading photographs, old movies, bureaucratic detritus, moldy scripts, and living witnesses, assembling an impressive archive that allowed her to demonstrate the astonishingly broad reach of blackface minstrelsy (Laurel Thatcher Ulrich). Painstakingly piecing together these scattered shards of evidence, Barnes reveals the shocking extent to which blackface took center stage in every era of American history.
\n
\nThis was not a fringe activity. By 1830, as political resistance to slavery grew, blackface exploded from a niche performance into a venomous national export. Within a decade, hardly a theater in the country didnt put on minstrel shows. Following the Civil War, this grotesque entertainment soared, seeping from professional theaters into everyday amateur shows, print, and advertisements. It was everywhere: Elks Clubs, religious institutions, battlefields, universities, and schools. It wasnt just in the Jim Crow era; it defined it. The very name Jim Crow derives from minstrelsys founding character.
\n
\nDarkology dismantles the myth that blackface was a fleeting, postCivil War phenomenon. Even in eras known for liberal progressivism, it flourished. Barnes unearths the startling fact that four-term president Franklin D. Roosevelt was a devotee who died hours before a blackface show he had commissioned at Warm Springs. It permeated U.S. military bases and was even used in World War II Japanese American concentration camps and German POW camps as a bizarre tool of Americanization.
\n
\nAfter WWII, the tide began to turn as Black veterans and mothers in places like suburban California protested the practice in schools. Still, blackface performances proved resilient, surfacing as late as 1969 at the University of Vermont. Even as the Civil Rights movement fought for equality, blackface remained present in American politics and white supremacist organizing through the Nixon and Ford administrations, its legacy still percolating in variable forms today.
\n
\nBy tracing minstrelsys evolution through oral histories, material culture, and a wide range of multimedia sources, Barness masterpiece (David Blight) forces us to reckon with the myriad ways the American Dream wore blackface. Recasting this American story with vivid and engaging storytelling (Howard French), Darkology is a landmark work that peers beneath the boulders deliberately obscuring our pastilluminating a path toward a more just and equal society in Americas future.",

Yet in contrast to his parents generation, which always sought to downplay their religious background, Lemann was intrigued by his roots, thinking he wanted to be like Jack Burden, the ever-curious reporter in Robert Penn Warrens All the Kings Men.
\n
\nAnd like his fictional hero, who gets drawn into a web of Southern political intrigue, Lemann in Returning delves deeply into the family storyfrom their arrival in the 1830s as peddlers from Germany, to their becoming plantation owners and department store owners after the Civil War, to their emergence as aspirants in the aristocratic world of New Orleans, where they could never quite belong.
\n
\nSeemingly more Our Crowd than Yentl in its depiction of a German-Jewish family where young scions matriculated at Harvard and liveried staff served crustless duck sandwiches at cocktail parties, Returning, with its parade of colorful family charactersfrom his grandfathers cousin, who participated in a campaign to prevent a Jewish state in the 1940s, to his father, a wealthy business lawyer in a Deep South seigneurial city, who took his kids to temple only on Thanksgiving, to his New Jerseyraised mother, who went into a kind of cardiac arrest of the soul upon meeting the familydefies easy categorization. Indeed, as the Lemanns climbed the ranks of New Orleanss high society, their struggles became part of a larger metaphorical story of the challenges faced by Jews, even wealthy ones, who are never able to fit in.
\n
\nKeenly aware of these contradictions, Lemann began chafing both at the Souths strict racial hierarchy and at his relatives eagerness to be accepted in a subtle but distinctly antisemitic environment. Returning then follows the narrator as he rejects this cossetted, assimilated society, embraces religion, and chooses, along with his wife, to raise his children in a Jewish world.
\n
\nSearchingly asking what it is about antisemitism that allows it to flourish after two thousand years, Lemann uses his own family saga as a springboard to address some of the most urgent questions of our time. Through its nuanced combination of biography and philosophy wrapped into a family history, Returning ultimately becomes one of the most memorable statements about Jewish life in the twenty-first century.
",

                "description": "
It wasn't an easy path for David to become king over Israel. God had personally selected him for the role at a young age and given him the strength and courage to defeat the Philistine giant named Goliath. However, David's popularity that resulted from this triumph made the current king, Saul, paranoid that he would lose the throne. He made attacks against David's life, forcing the younger man to flee into the wilderness and even hide out in enemy territory. Saul was ultimately killed in battle, but the path wouldn't get much easier for David once he became king. Sadly, much of this turmoil would come about as a result of David's own sinful actions when he committed adultery and then murder to cover it up.

Join beloved author Max Lucado as he explores David's reign in 2 Samuel and how God used him to become Israel's greatest king in spite of his many flaws and failings. As you read, study, journal, and discuss the book of 2 Samuel, watch for these key themes that Max will unpack throughout the book:
God provides his guidance in the intersections of life.Pride always leads to a fall and colossal collapses.Our God is in the business of forgiving and restoring his people.The Lord continues to look for people after his own heart.
Life Lessons with Max Lucado brings the Bible to life in twelve lessons filled with intriguing questions, inspirational stories, and poignant reflections to take you deeper into God's Word. Each lesson includes:
An opening reflection on the Bible book you're studying.Background information to deepen your understanding of the cultural and historical setting.An excerpt of the text (from the NIV and the NKJV).Exploration questions with plenty of room to write your own thoughts and notes.Inspirational thoughts from Max as well as a closing takeaway for further reflection.
The Life Lessons series is ideal for use in both a small-group setting or for individual study.
",

This book explains practical ways to infuse schools with trauma-informed and culturally responsive (TICR) practices that can foster compassionate relationships, promote the well-being of students and educators alike, and unlock students academic and socialemotional potential. Isaiah B. Pickens provides a wealth of tools for implementing TICR strategies in classroom instruction, multi-tiered systems of support, school safety planning, and professional learning. In a convenient large-size format, the book is packed with case examples, checklists, activity guides, templates for assessment, and best-practice resources. The companion website offers 41 reproducible and downloadable handouts.This book is in The Guilford Practical Intervention in the Schools Series, edited by Sandra M. Chafouleas. ",

",

Their encounter marks the beginning of Ahana's extraordinary inner odyssey: a journey across dimensions and lifetimes, plunging ever deeper into the secret realms of self-realization and unveiling layers of reality hidden from ordinary sight.

As Ahana's quest deepens, the novel unfolds like a mandala-blending poetry and philosophy, emotion and insight. Here, the ancient truths of Vedanta-Atman, Brahman, Advaita-are not distant doctrines but intimate revelations, lived and breathed through the heart of a young woman awakening to her eternal Self. In Krishna, Ahana finds not a myth nor a distant deity, but a presence closer than her breath-nearer than the beat of her own heart.

Somewhere among the Stars offers a vision of Vedanta that is not dry or austere but a glorious embrace of existence-a Vedanta that is integral, dynamic, and complete. "description": "
In 1929, a news story too crazy for most times, but just perfect for the exuberant Jazz Age, spread through America's newspapers, and even overseas. During that year, readers were titillated with a tale of Twenties extravagance to out-Roar them all. They bought it hook, line, and sinker, and fondly recalled it for decades thereafter. But the elaborate tale was fictitious. A fabulously daring and artful hoax. The perpetrators, three ambitious writers, each bearing the royal title they brought to the task, got away with it.

Incorporating extensive research and newly-discovered sources, John Locke, an expert on the writing world of the 1920s, tears away the veils of secrecy for the first time, spinning a fast-moving journey of discovery through fabled times. Unfolding like a great mystery, we discover the rich lives of the hoaxers, how they united in strange purpose, how their globetrotting lives inexorably converged on the hoax, how they engineered its spread, and how their intimate understanding of the Jazz Age made them masters of their scheme. Not even jazz was spared.

It's a story spanning East and West colored with unbridled ambition, struggle and success, hoaxes and deceptions, war and peace, the romance of adventure, and the flattening of nineteenth century traditions beneath the steamroller of modernity.

Above all hovers the tantalizing mystery of motives-why did they do it?
",

Do you know why it's not a good idea to suggest to a teenage girl's parents that she might win a beauty contest at the Hogzilla Festival? The answer to these and other vital questions are found in this book, a collection of stories the author first posted on Facebook. Jimmy Allen grew up in a small town in Georgia, during the 1950s, '60s, and '70s, in a family of \"big talkers,\" including four uncles who were great storytellers. He continues that tradition in Keep on Pedaling, sharing homespun stories of hard work and easy play, little victories and big defeats, the good and bad, happy and sad times of growing up. But Jimmy's stories are not bound by time and place. Human nature is at the heart of each story, where you'll meet familiar people in situations that mirror your own. The kid who hides a firecracker in his mama's sugar bowl, the boy who's fleeced out of his spending money at the fair, the war veteran who can't seem to reclaim his old life, the football coach who learns how to overcome adversity--these people have a lot to teach you about how to keep on pedaling.
",

But here's the problem: you didn't choose them.

Behind the headlines, the outrage cycles, the trending content, and even the \"facts\" you're fed, there's a calculated system of manipulation at work.
