                "subtitle": "A Cultural History of Greed and Prejudice",
                "description": "How does prejudice grow and mutate? What does intolerance, when transferred from human beings onto animals, do to those creatures? And what, in return, does it do to us? Cormorant is the gripping story of a 'greedy' bird hated across the world, the object of global conflict between the fishing industry on the one hand and environmental science on the other. Gordon McMullan's book reveals that cormorants have been loathed for centuries, a detestation that has metamorphosed over time. Drawing on fields which include literature, art history and zoology, and ranging from America to China and from Britain to Peru, Cormorant explores racism, xenophobia and capitalism through the remarkable story of a bird. McMullan argues that if in the present we are to recognize prejudicial attitudes towards animals and our fellow human beings, then we need to look to the past to understand how those viewpoints have taken hold.",

                "subtitle": "Publish and Thrive",
                "description": "Navigating the world of academic writing and publishing can be overwhelming. This book provides the antidote. Written by a team of authors who are at different stages of their careers, this book provides hands-on advice and strategies to turn academic writing from a daunting experience to a joyful journey. It gives a complete overview of the publishing process, from how to write an academic paper, chapter or book, to areas that are often overlooked, such as indexing a book, working with images and copyright, dealing with advertising and disseminating the book, ethical issues, open access, predatory publishing, and much more. The chapters are short and clearly labelled, with questions for reflection and discussion at the end of chapters, making them a handy reference for readers to dip in and out of. Demystifying aspects of academic writing, academic writers will come away with the confidence and knowledge to 'publish and thrive.'",

                "description": "Roman law is justly famous, but what was its relationship to governing an empire? In this book, Ari Z. Bryen argues that law, as the learned practice that we know today, emerged from the challenge of governing a diverse and fractious set of imperial subjects. Through analysis of these subjects' political and legal ideologies, Bryen reveals how law became the central topic of political contest in the Roman Empire. Law offered a means of testing legitimacy and evaluating government, as well as a language for asking fundamental political questions. But these political claims did not go unchallenged. Elites resisted them, and jurists, in collaboration with emperors, reimagined law as a system that excluded the voices of the governed. The result was to separate, for the first time, 'law' from 'society' more broadly, and to define law as a primarily literate and learned practice, rather than the stuff of everyday life.",

                "description": "Sexual harassment between doctors is a common problem hiding in plain sight. There have been prevalence studies across the world, across contexts and across disciplines and although definitions,methodologies and results vary, the prevalence of sexual harassment inmedicine continues to be unacceptedly high.Harassment is more common when the survivor is still in training, and it is more likely to be experienced by doctors who live with multiple marginalisations. This book combines expert analysis and commentary from multiple interdisciplinary perspectives. It privileges the voices of survivors, whose rich experience helps to inform our understanding of a complex problem. With contributing authors from Austria to Zambia, the book spans multiple languages, sociocultural contexts, and academic disciplines and offers unique globally contextualised perspectives. It gives leaders, scholars and survivors a nuanced, holistic understanding of sexual harms between doctors, and it demonstrates how silence prevents effective evidence-based management of sexual harassment. This volume not only helps to break the silence, it also offers potential solutions in discrete cultural contexts. This title is also available as Open Access on Cambridge Core.",

Richard John Neuhaus, author of The Naked Public Square, employs a large measure of social criticism, moral philosophy, and religious reflection in analyzing this contemporary Kulturkampf. He addresses the limits and imperatives of politics as well as religion's role in defining our common culture. Among the subjects tackled are the abortion debate, the urban underclass, and the nature of altruism in a world that rewards uncaring. In addition, Neuhaus reflects on his role in \"The Movement\" of the 1960s, and how, despite its idealistic intentions, it went so wildly wrong.</p><p>America Against Itself is not a prolonged lamentation against the prevailing moral and intellectual decline that seems characteristic of the contemporary era. Instead, Neuhaus presents a careful and sympathetic analysis of why we have turned against the highest ideals of the American experiment, and issues a bracing call to turn anew to the challenging vision of \"a new order for the ages.\"</p><p>This book is a disturbing, but ultimately hopeful, testament from one of America's foremost public intellectuals, whose passage through three tumultuous decades proves a valuable qualification for probing the complex issue of conflicting moralities struggling to exist in a representative democracy.</p>",

                "description": "<p>Since 1974 there has been an unprecedented wave of democratization in the world. This trend has been particularly extensive in South America. But the problems confronting these new democracies are staggering, and the prospects for building consolidated democratic regimes are far from uniformly good. Focusing primarily on recent South American cases, Issues in Democratic Consolidation examines some of the difficulties of constructing consolidated democracies and provides a critical examination of the major issues involved.</p><p>A prominent theme running through this collection is that the transitions from authoritative rule to civilian government may be arrested by political, economic, and social constraints. The articles contain analyses of the varied modalities and complex processes related to the transitions. The first transition begins with the initial stirrings of crisis under authoritarian rule that generate some form of political opening and greater respect for basic civil rights, and ends with the establishment of a government elected in an open, competitive contest. The volume's primary focus, however, is on the second transition, which begins with the inauguration of a democratic government and ends-if all goes well-with the establishment of a consolidated democratic regime.</p>",

                "description": "<p>Throughout much of the world, the common carp, Cyprinus carpio, is prized as an easily cultured, nutritious and tasty fish. It also features in a hugely popular fishery, especially in the UK, Europe and the USA. Koi, an ornamental type of carp, is revered by millions for its beautiful colours and intricate patterns. But despite carps popularity elsewhere, it is almost universally despised in Australia.</p>\n\n<p>Carp was originally introduced into Australia in the mid-1800s for ornament and angling, but since its escape into Gippsland and the MurrayDarling Basin, the fish has all but taken over our inland waterways, wreaking ecological havoc in our rivers, lakes and wetlands. In recent years, controversial methods, including a carp-killing virus, have been championed by some and maligned by others. Surprisingly perhaps, there still are carp enthusiasts in Australia, who fear what such a virus might do.</p>\n\n<p>Carp in Australia tells the story of how and why one of our most hated species was brought to this country. It explores carps relatively recent spread throughout our largest inland river system, the MurrayDarling Basin, its impacts on freshwater ecosystems and the attempts to deal with the scourge. Readers are given key insights into the management challenges and possibilities in carps uncertain future in Australia. Is there hope for eradication, or is this fish here to stay?</p>",

                "description": "The open access book with the title Electronic-Photonic Integrated Systems for Ultrafast Signal Processing is a final report of the same-titled DFG Priority Programme in the emerging field of integrated electronic-photonic systems using novel nanophotonic/nanoelectronic semiconductor technologies. The programme is funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) and coordinated by Prof. Christoph Scheytt from Heinz Nixdorf Institute, Paderborn. Over the course of six years and two project phases overall 19 principal investigators and their respective research groups conducted their research in a total of 20 funded projects.\nThe overall objective of the Priority Programme is to address nanophotonic/nanoelectronic technology from a system perspective by investigating fundamental electronic-photonic signal processing concepts, algorithms, and novel integrated system architectures using predominantly photonic processing. By photonic-electronic integration in advanced photonic-electronic semiconductor technologies, such as silicon-on-insulator (SOI), silicon nitride (SiN), and indium phosphide (InP), the limits of electronic signal processing can be disrupted. Ultra-fast and energy-efficient information processing is required in many applications, such as communication systems, cloud computing, artificial intelligence, smart factory, instrumentation, and medical technology. Besides speed and energy efficiency, these systems have unique properties like low-cost, miniaturization, robustness, programmability.\nThe research and the results of the programme can be categorized in three core areas which pertain to:\n\nUltra-broadband electronic-photonic signal processing with bandwidth far beyond electronic bandwidth\nFrequency synthesis as well as high-speed data converters enabled by ultralow-jitter femto-second-pulse-lasers\nOptical/THz sensing",

                "description": "This open access book presents the Unidroit Principles on Digital Assets and Private Law (DAPL) with comprehensive context and expert perspectives. The first part introduces the DAPL framework, its development, and future prospects, featuring contributions on its formation and influence. Key figures, including Professor Hideki Kanda and Professor Steven Weise, discuss major issues and highlights, followed by a Q&A with Professor Edwin Smith on integrating digital assets into the U.S. UCC. The Right of Control section includes practical exercises and explores its central role in DAPLs evolution, concluding with an application to verified carbon credits.The following parts offer detailed reflections on each of the 19 Principles. Each reflection follows a consistent structure: the Principles text, commentary, illustrative examples, and explanations, all grounded in official Unidroit documents. The book clarifies the rationale, aims, and drafting process behind each Principle, showing their relevance and alignment with international standards.This resource is invaluable for lawmakers, judges, lawyers, entrepreneurs, and students seeking clear guidance on interpreting and applying the DAPL Principles to digital assets law.\nThis work was financed within the framework of the Prometeo 2023 project of the Regional Ministry of Innovation, Universities, Science and Digital Society (CIPROM/2022/26) Present and future of the regulation of cryptoassets in the EU [LegalCripto], whose principal investigator is Maria del Carmen Pastor Sempere. The basic ideas contained herein were presented in the author's paper with the same title, given on November 13, 2024 at the IV International Congress on Unidroit Principles on Digital Assets and Private Law: Context, Content, Perspectives, organized also by BAES Research Group of the University of Alicante on November 13 and 14, 2024.",

                "name": "Determining the Value of Universal Basic Income",

                "description": "This open access volume connects the moral arguments for universal basic income (UBI) with the empirical evidence from recent experiments focused on UBI. Examining the costs and benefits associated with UBI, the book bridges the gap between the moral arguments for UBI and the empirical evidence from international UBI experiments. The resulting text will help readers evaluate the viability of UBI as a sustainable policy solution.\nWith contributions from economists, philosophers, sociologists, and more, the book highlights different models for UBI and examines the trade-offs involved. Chapters investigate the long-term impacts of UBI on labor markets, social cohesion, and institutional trust. By integrating empirical evidence with ongoing moral debates, the book analyzes the potential of UBI.\nThe volume includes detailed studies of UBI experiments conducted in the US, Europe, and other regions. Contributors analyze the wide range of outcomes, such as changes in work hours, educational achievements, caregiving activities, stress levels, hospitalization rates, food security, crime rates, and adolescent behavior. Chapters explore the ecological impacts of UBI, considering how it might affect consumption patterns and contribute to a just ecological transition. This multidisciplinary approach provides a balanced examination of UBI from multiple perspectives.\nDetermining the Value of Universal Basic Income provides insights into the financial costs and benefits of UBI, its effects on various social indicators, and its potential to foster a more equitable society. Readers will gain a deep understanding of the economic, social, and ecological implications surrounding UBI.",
